Chapter Text
Ten years ago
"You're gay?" Shadow Weaver spat in Adora face. It was strictly against Horde policy, like any other army wanted more soilders. Two women couldn't make more babies to serve in the army, not most of the time anyway. Adora knew that this reaction was coming when she had worked up the nerve to tell her boss? Her adopted mother? Something in between the two more like. It was a twisted relationship but what more could one expect in the Horde.
"Yes..." Adora didn't know why she was doing this. She regretted the words as soon as they left her mouth. She knew it was going to end in her electriution. Shadow Weaver used her powers liberally on Adora when she was younger. Adora had since learnt how to dodge punishment. However that didn't mean Shadow Weaver was above doing it.
"Okay." Shadow Weaver breathed in sharply and Adora squeezed her eyes shut. It had been many years since Catra was here to take the hit for her or argue her way out of Adora getting the punishment.
"You have two choices." Adora opening her eyes. She wasn't being punished? "Choice number one you leave the Horde and you get one chance with this girl - Don't say there isn't one I know you wouldn't be telling me if there wasn't -" Shadow Weaver paced around Adora in even slow steps the like the tune of a grandfather clock. "Choice number two which will happen if you mess up choice number one. I will marry you to a promising Cadet and you will put up with him and not complain."
"Thank you." Adora smiled. She was being given the chance. She could be with Catra, she could be happy. Everything would be perfect...
"Catra, love, I'm home. Have you done the dishes?" Adora asked clicking the door shut with her foot as she carried in the groceries. Catra looked up from where she was laying on the couch.
"I'm sorry Dora darling I forgot." She drawled. Catra did sound sorry or even bothered at all.
Adora sighed, shoving down her irration. It was fine, she could deal with this, she just needed to have a discussion with Catra. Glimmer had told her time and time again that communication was the key to a healthy marriage. Though Bow did seem more inclined to share the domestic labour than Catra was.
"My love I think we need to talk." Adora put the bags down on the kitchen counter and sat on the arm of the couch.
"Could we have it later?" Catra asked, not looking up from the video game she was playing on the TV.
"No, I think we need to have it now, Cat." Adora insisted.
"Okay fine. What is it? You are always nagging me, Dora. When was the last time we had fun together without fighting?" Catra threw her controller down on the sofa and approached Adora angrily. "Don't you remember went we first got married? It was fun, you were fun, now you're always angry."
"I'm angry because you never help me with anything. When we got married we were in this together. And that worked Cat, the good stuff and the bad stuff together. That's why it worked. Now I have to do all the bad stuff by myself. So sorry if I don't have enough time for the good things!"
Adora ranted angrily all the frustration pushes down over the years of marriage bubbling and boiling up from the depths. She loved Catra, so much yet this was her breaking point. All the secret angry and frustration. All the times Adora had had to ask Catra one too many times to do something. All the times she'd be ignored all together, every cancelled event because Catra had to do something with Scropia and Entrapta, every time she had to cancel on Glimmer and Now because Catra couldn't be bothered to clean. It all flowed out of her now.
"That's how you feel? You think I'm lazy or incompetent? Why do you always say it's all my fault?"
"You never listen! I'm here everyday giving you the opportunity, begging for you to help me. To let us be equal, be together again. But you ignore me, day in and day out."
The yelling back and forth continues with neither Catra or Adora giving up their stance. They yelled until their voices were horse and they were tired. They screamed past eachother, ignoring the others points. Eventually they collapsed back on the couch. Neither one of them had touched the other since the argument started. It was a rule, Catra would often unsheath her claws when she was angry and Adora sometimes would accidentally become She-Ra. So they made sure not to get to close to eachother when they were angry. That rule has been made back when their marriage was good, when arguments were rare and the lack of control due to their emotions were uncommon. None of that was the case now.
Adora felt exhausted, the anger was gone, though she didn't forget the argument. She wouldn't give this up, she couldn't. She knew if this continued on like this with Catra they would grow to hate one another. And Adora couldn't live with that.
"Cat?" Adora turned to her wife. "What are we going to do?"
"I don't think we are in love anymore..." Catra said quietly. "I want a divorce."
One chance Adora...
"No!"
