Chapter Text

The morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Jeon Corp’s executive tower, glinting off polished marble floors and gleaming steel accents.

From where Jeon Jungkook sat at the head of a massive obsidian conference table — the city stretched beneath him, a kingdom he would someday fully inherit.

But Jungkook didn’t bother admiring the view.

He never did.

Instead, he flipped through a thick stack of quarterly reports, his expression unreadable, his tailored dark navy suit framing a body built from both discipline and design. He looked every inch the perfect CEO-in-training, devastatingly handsome, commanding, untouchable. The kind of man who could kill a deal or a reputation, with a single glance.

"Sir, as per your request, we consolidated the projections—" one executive began nervously.

Jungkook didn’t look up.

He had already spotted three discrepancies and a missed opportunity before the man even opened his mouth.

"Flawed," Jungkook said, his voice low but lethal.

The room went still. A few executives swallowed nervously.

He closed the file with a soft snap, the sound slicing through the heavy silence of the boardroom. Leaning back in his leather chair, Jeon Jungkook laced his fingers together, his dark gaze locking onto the senior manager across the table. It wasn’t just a look, it was an assessment, swift and cutting, as if he were already calculating the man’s worth.

Jungkook was a man who could stop a room with his presence alone, devastatingly handsome, impeccably dressed in a tailored Armani suit, and with a reputation that made even seasoned executives tread carefully. His sharp jawline, cold stare, and effortless charisma were the stuff of business magazines and society pages alike. The Jeon heir. The most eligible bachelor in the country. And also, the man you didn’t want to disappoint.

When Jungkook finally spoke, his voice was calm but razor-edged.

"Jeon Corp doesn't bleed capital," he said, his lips curling into a smirk that didn’t touch his eyes. "Fix it. Or don’t bother showing up again."

The manager, pale and visibly rattled, nodded quickly and gathered his papers with trembling hands before fleeing the room.

Jungkook watched him go, the fake smirk fading back into an expressionless mask. Without a word, he flipped open the next file, already moving on. In his world, there was no time for second chances. No space for mistakes. Only results.

Another meeting. Another problem. Another fake smile plastered over a face that stopped caring a long time ago.

His reflection on the polished glass walls looked every inch the man he was trained to be, composed, powerful, in control.

But inside, Jungkook felt nothing.

He had everything people wanted, a penthouse that touched the sky, a bank account with endless zeroes, power that made grown men stutter. He had it all.

And yet, when he looked around, all he saw was black and white.

-

Across the city, in a tiny, cramped apartment where the heater rattled like it was on its last breath and the windows didn’t quite shut properly, Kim Taehyung struggled into a faded, too-big hoodie, the fabric swallowing his slim frame.

He checked the time on his cracked phone screen.

8:45 AM.

“Oh, shit,” Taehyung gasped, shoving a half-burnt piece of toast into his mouth while blindly stuffing papers into his worn backpack.

From the bathroom, his roommate and best friend, Park Jimin leaned out, toothbrush hanging from his lips, one eyebrow raised.

“Again, Taetae?” he mumbled around the foam, voice dripping with amused exasperation.

“I had a shift last night!” Taehyung whined dramatically, hopping around as he yanked on battered sneakers with frayed laces. “I barely slept, Jiminie! And if I’m late again, they’ll cut my hours— I need that paycheck!”

Jimin rolled his eyes and spat into the sink. "Kim Taehyung, you’re gonna burn yourself out before you even graduate,” he said, toweling off his face before walking over and pulling Taehyung into a quick but tight hug.

Taehyung sagged into it for half a second, comforted, before pulling away with a small, sleepy grin. His pretty brown eyes, usually so bright were rimmed with tiredness today, but he forced his signature smile anyway.

“I’ll be fine,” Taehyung chirped, flashing a V-sign. “I’m strong, remember?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Jimin muttered, but his lips twitched into a fond smile. He ruffled Taehyung’s messy hair affectionately. “You’re strong. Stupidly strong. And stupidly stubborn."

Taehyung pouted dramatically, tugging his hoodie’s hood up over his head. “Hey, I’m not stupid. I’m a hardworking citizen, thank you very much.”

Jimin narrowed his eyes, crossing his arms. His tone turned sharp, the playful lilt dropping into something more serious and slightly scary, the side of him that Taehyung always joked could scare off demons.

"You’re a hardworking idiot," Jimin said firmly. "Tae, you can't keep running on empty. I swear, if you skip another meal or fall asleep standing up again, I’m dragging your ass to the hospital myself."

Taehyung winced, knowing Jimin wasn’t just bluffing. His hyung was usually soft and sweet, smiling at strangers, quick to hug but once pushed, Park Jimin could be terrifying. It was one of the reasons Taehyung trusted him with everything.

He gave a sheepish nod, clutching his backpack tighter.

"I’ll eat. I promise. Later," he mumbled.

"Not later, now!" Jimin scolded, shoving a banana into Taehyung’s hand.

Taehyung blinked down at it in surprise. "Where did you—?"

"My emergency stash," Jimin said smugly. "You think, I don't think about your health?"

Taehyung's heart squeezed. He really didn’t deserve Jimin sometimes.

“Thank you, hyung,” he said softly.

“Yeah, yeah," Jimin grumbled, grabbing his own jacket. "Go, before you miss the bus. And text me when you get there! Kim Taehyung, if you don’t text me, I’ll haunt you."

Laughing, Taehyung stuffed the banana into his bag and darted for the door.

“I’ll text! I’ll text!” he called over his shoulder, his voice bright.

Outside, the cold air hit him like a slap.

He didn’t have a proper winter coat couldn’t afford one yet but he tugged the hoodie tighter around himself and took off running.

The city was alive, buzzing with the morning rush: honking cars, shouting vendors, flashing neon signs fighting the pale daylight. It should have felt overwhelming, but somehow, Taehyung moved through it like he belonged. Like he was another piece of the beautiful, chaotic puzzle.

Even dressed in secondhand clothes, even with dark circles bruising his delicate eyes, Taehyung still shone.

Strangers turned to look as he weaved through the crowd, backpack bouncing against his slim shoulders. His face, all soft curves and ethereal beauty, caught the light in a way that made him look almost otherworldly. Pretty brown eyes, full pink lips, skin like porcelain.

He didn’t notice the stares. He didn’t have time.

Bills were piling up back home. His family depended on the money he sent each month. College tuition wasn’t going to pay itself. And he had a shift at the café after classes today, plus two assignments due by midnight.

Taehyung ran harder, slipping between the crowd with an effortless grace, like a dancer.

His chest burned from the cold air. His legs ached from exhaustion.

But he didn’t stop.

He couldn’t afford to stop.

He was late, he was tired, he was barely holding it together — but he was still smiling. Still stubborn. Still fighting.

Kim Taehyung was many things.

A student.

A worker.

A dreamer.

And no matter how hard the world tried to crush him, he was going to survive.

He tightened the straps of his bag and sprinted faster, heart hammering against his ribs, racing toward another long, grueling day.

He had no time to waste.

-

Later that day, in an elevator that moved so silently it might as well have floated, Jungkook leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching the numbers tick down.

He was scheduled to meet with a group of investors. After that, lunch with his father to discuss the company’s future, a "future" Jungkook had no real say in, even as the heir. His life had been mapped out before he even knew how to read.

Everything was expectation.

Everything was duty.

The elevator doors opened with a soft ding. Jungkook stepped out, surrounded by a few assistants who trailed behind him like nervous shadows.

“Sir, the report on the overseas branch—”

“I’ll review it later,” Jungkook interrupted, not slowing down.

He knew the steps. The words. The way people looked at him, with fear or fake admiration. He could predict it all like a chess game, ten moves ahead.

It was exhausting.

But showing it was weakness.

So, he adjusted his cuffs again, flashed a smile that didn’t reach his eyes, and continued walking.

The world around him stayed black and white.

-

Meanwhile, Taehyung collapsed onto a bench after his last class, shoving a thick textbook into his bag.

His phone buzzed.

Mom:
The electricity bill came. It's a little more this month... I'm sorry, Taehyung-ah.

Taehyung’s heart squeezed painfully. He bit his lip, typing quickly.

Taehyung:
Don’t worry, Mom! I’ll send it soon! Love you! 💜

He shoved his phone back into his pocket, eyes stinging, and stood up.

His first shift started in an hour.

The café wasn't glamorous. The manager barked orders. Customers left messes and never tipped enough. But Taehyung smiled at every table because he needed the hours. Needed the pay. Needed to survive.

As he tied his apron and pinned his nametag to his chest, Taehyung caught his reflection in the dirty mirror by the kitchen door.

He smiled.

It was a real smile, even if it was small. Because even with all the struggle, all the exhaustion, he still loved this messy, chaotic, colorful life.

He still believed better days would come.

Two souls.

One drowning in gray, the other dancing in color.

They didn’t know it yet.

But soon, their worlds would collide.

And nothing would ever be the same.
