The first night Koushi had ever stayed the night at Daichi’s apartment he woke with a start at 2am, confused and scared for a second to find himself in a strange bedroom, and the bed beside him empty. Shivering he sat up and his eyes caught on the faint glow of light beneath the bedroom door. Sitting absolutely still he strained his ears for the flushing of a toilet or something that might indicate to him where Daichi had gone. Feeling silly for it, and more than a little unsettled to be sitting alone in his boyfriend of two weeks’ bed. At last he crawled out of bed, snagging a discarded t-shirt off of the floor to pull on. For a moment flushing with delight that the shirt wasn’t his but Daichi’s. It smelled like him, and was big enough it almost made up for his missing boxers. Slowly he opened the door and could finally see the source of the light: the kitchen.
Koushi padded down the hall on silent feet, poking his head into the kitchen to see Daichi in only his boxers slowly slurping a cup of instant noodles over the kitchen sink, eyes gazing into some middle distance out the window as he did so.
“Hungry?” Koushi asked when enough time had passed and Daichi had not given any indication of realizing he was being watched.
Daichi choked on the noodles and nearly dropped the cup.
“Holy shit, you gave me a heart attack!” he gasped, setting the noodles down, a hand to his chest like a startled auntie. Koushi snickered.
“Imagine how I felt waking up, alone in bed.”
Daichi flushed.
“I’m sorry,” he said immediately coming closer.
“When nature calls,” Koushi chuckled, jabbing a finger into Daichi’s stomach and enjoying as his cheeks turned another darker shade of embarrassed. “It’s all okay, I’m just mad you didn’t invite me. Some boyfriend you are, giving me a workout like that and not even bothering to feed me afterwards.”
Daichi huffed out a laugh, relaxing.
“You want some noodles? I’ve got more.”
“No, I just want a bite of yours,” Koushi grinned snatching the cup and chopsticks off the counter to steal a mouthful.
~~~
He was folding the rice carefully in his hands into smooth triangles, wrapping the nori around the outside. Koushi watched Daichi in a trance, his eyelids feeling heavy as he leaned against the counter.
“Suga,” Daichi’s voice was just above a whisper, Koushi blinking blearily, there was only one onigiri left on the plate, the other somehow magically having vanished.
“Huh?” Koushi lifted his head from his arms, looking up to find Daichi smiling fondly at him.
“You still hungry?” he asked, nodding to the remaining onigiri, and damn, it did look good. Koushi’s brain took too long to put the words together, before he realized Daichi had him by the arm, walking them back to that beautiful queen sized just the perfect firmness mattress he’d helped him pick out last week. Folding the two of them into its perfect embrace. Daichi’s strong arms around Koushi’s waist, in his stupidly soft sweatshirt. Koushi was fast asleep before he’d even registered laying his head down.
~~~
Daichi gave the pan another shake, tossing the rice with a saucy grin at Koushi.
“I get it. You can stop doing that.”
“No, watch again,” Daichi performed his trick again, and giving his ass a little shake for good measure. Growling, Koushi attacked him from behind, wrapping his arms around Daichi’s waist and plastering himself to Daichi’s back to cover his neck in kisses, Daichi giggling like a little boy.
Midnight snacks were so much more fun when they hadn’t gone to bed yet. Speaking of…
Koushi nuzzled up against Daichi’s ear, breathing out a hot humid breath against the shell of it just to feel Daichi shiver.
“I can’t believe you care more about your snack than me.”
Daichi gave his rice another shake but with much less flair and gusto this time, some of the rice even slid out of the pan to crackle and sizzle on the flame of the stove. Koushi groped at Daichi’s chest, grinding his hips against Daichi’s ass.
“Come on, you know I’m the real snack…”
In two seconds Daichi had spun on his heel, pressing Koushi up against the counter in his tiny kitchen, to ravish his mouth. Koushi trying so hard not to laugh and failing miserably, even as Daichi kissed it out of his mouth, slipping his big hot hands up beneath his stolen sweatshirt to grasp at whatever of Koushi he could touch, thumbs swiping over nipples, even as his slotted an unfairly muscular thigh between Koushi’s legs. Koushi couldn’t help his groan at such an illegal maneuver, sliding his hands down the back of Daichi’s sweatpants in retaliation, feeling himself already filling out as their make-out session turned hot and heavy in an instant.
It wasn’t the smell of the burnt rice that jolted them loose out of their own private world but instead the screaming of the smoke detector.
“Shit shit shit!” Daichi scrambled back to his abandoned fried rice burning to ash in the pan. Koushi sank back against the counter, breathlessly laughing before staggering to pull the window over the sink open to let out the smoke.

“Do you ever wonder what the hell you’re doing with your life?”
Koushi sat on the floor with his back to their fridge, watching the muscles on Daichi’s bare back as he was meticulously preparing an ice cream sundae. At least Koushi thought it was a sundae, Daichi had the ice cream out on the counter when he’d come into the kitchen, woken up alone in bed once more.
Daichi hummed in answer to that.
“My mom always said not to trust your feelings about your life after ten pm.”
Koushi snorted, leaning his head against his shoulder and wishing at least a little bit that he was still in bed, it would be morning soon enough and the thought of returning to his school was filling him with more than a little bit of dread. It was easy enough to think that he could’ve rolled over and gone back to sleep, but there’s no way he would’ve been able to. Not without the lulling peace of Daichi’s body beside his.
Daichi was cutting something up on the cutting board and Koushi wondered if he was actually making a sundae at all. From this angle he couldn’t see much.
“Sometimes I do,” Daichi said after a moment.
“Huh?” Koushi hadn’t expected that. Daichi was usually pretty resolute in his decision making process, each choice made with consideration and care. Sort of the way he seemed to be assembling whatever he was making up there on the counter. He was pulling a package of cookies out of the cupboard now.
“Like the police force. You saw how that turned out. And uh,” he licked something off of his thumb and then opened a drawer to dig around. “Last week, when the guys at the firehouse dressed me up in the mascot costume.”
Koushi snorted again, this time it tickling out of his throat into a full-fledged laugh. Daichi had turned over his shoulder to grin at him.
“Or when you talked me into that haircut.”
“That haircut was fine,” Koushi protested.
“No, no, no,” Daichi was shaking his head. “It was so bad. I know you were lying through your teeth, and I respect your desire to not hurt my feelings.”
Koushi was laughing helplessly again.
“It was sort of lopsided.”
Daichi shook his head, still smiling, holding out his creation for Koushi to admire. There was a second bowl on the counter but clearly this one was for Koushi, Daichi producing a bottle of hot sauce to dribble on over the chocolate and ice cream, a smile in chili red beneath two cookie eyes. Koushi felt his heart melting, tears welling up in his eyes even as Daichi pressed the freezing bowl into his hands and passed him a spoon. He sat down beside him, his own bowl sporting sliced up strawberries in addition to what Koushi’s had (minus the hot sauce).
“Is this about school again?” he asked, gently nudging Koushi’s elbow with his own. Koushi took a bite of his ice cream savoring the flavors of it on his tongue and leaning his head onto Daichi’s shoulder.
~~~
Daichi was leaning against the sink eating a cup of noodles, slowly, eyes lost out the kitchen window. The kitchen hardly felt like their kitchen, the usual debris of their life was absent from the cleaned off counters, utensils and knickknacks alike all packed away in moving boxes. Tomorrow this place really wouldn’t be theirs anymore. Koushi hesitated in the doorway, wondering what Daichi was thinking about.
The constellation of their life thus far, stars on a chart, their next stop a new unknown. Was he worried? Was he excited? Was he, like Koushi, a mix of all, tied up in a nervous ball of energy? Was that why he’d hardly been in bed at all before he’d escaped for his midnight snack? Koushi had waited and waited, hoping he’d come back, knowing he wouldn’t be able to sleep either until he did. This apartment had been Daichi’s for his whole adult life so far, and Koushi’s for the last two years, tomorrow their new place would really be theirs, leased under both of their names. Bigger and closer to work, in a sunshiney little neighborhood with big trees. Koushi leaned against the doorframe. He hadn’t ever quite felt as far away from Daichi as he did right now. Maybe he’d go back to bed, let Daichi have this private moment…
“Hungry?” Daichi’s voice broke the silence, startling Koushi. He turned to give Koushi a quiet smile. A little wistful. This was another last. Their last midnight snack in this apartment. “I don’t think I can finish this,” he said nodding to the cup.
“Are you feeling okay?” Koushi tried to joke finally entering the kitchen to join Daichi at the sink, he hadn’t ever known Daichi not to finish a snack. Daichi breathed out a quiet ‘ha’ at that, handing Koushi the cup. Koushi ate a handful of noodles but he wasn’t hungry either.
“Are you worried about this? I can’t sleep,” Koushi admitted.
“No, it’s going to be good,” Daichi disagreed, taking the cup from Koushi to finish it off. “I guess, I’m just going to miss this place. Miss this view.”
Koushi peered out the window to see what Daichi meant, the sleepy city outside under the patchwork of stars. He hummed, feeling choked with the emotion. He glanced to Daichi to see the feeling mirrored back, reaching out to wrap his arm around Daichi’s waist and lean their shoulders together, his head against Daichi’s. Daichi leaned back, arm around Koushi squeezing him tight.
“Guess we’ll have to find some new views huh?”
Daichi had woken up to the growling of his stomach, groggy he’d crawled out of bed half asleep, only realizing once he’d reached their bedroom door that the light was already on in the kitchen and Suga was not in bed.
“Suga?”
“I couldn’t sleep,” Suga explained from the stove where he was working on something. “But you were still out so I thought I’d maybe try out your midnight snack technique myself. I was hoping you might join me.”
Daichi stumbled to the stove like a cartoon man drawn by a lovely smell. Suga was rolling an omelet. Daichi draped himself over Suga’s back like a weighted blanket, thanking all his lucky stars that Suga was his boyfriend.
“I love you so much,” he mumbled into Suga’s neck and received a beautiful laugh. Suga settling his hand over one of Daichi’s around his waist and linking their fingers together.
Feeling like he was still half in a dream, Daichi watched Suga work his omelet magic. When the giant thing was finished, clearly big enough for them both, Suga slid it off the pan onto a plate and Daichi’s mouth began to water. Suga clicked off the stove.
“Come on let’s eat in bed,” he said pulling free of Daichi and collecting two pairs of chopsticks. Omelet in hand he turn a challenging look back to Daichi who had yet to give him an answer. He was swimming in Daichi’s t-shirt in a way that always made Daichi’s heart go funny.
“What about your “no food in bed” rule?” Daichi finally found words.
“I’ll make an exception. Just this once,” Suga said winking at him, slapping his own ass with his free hand.
Daichi chased him back across their new apartment into the bedroom. Suga laying seductively with the omelet when Daichi finally caught up to him.
“You’re a menace,” he said collapsing into bed beside Suga and snatching the first bite of the omelet. He groaned at the flavor, head falling back against the pillow. “You’ve been holding out on me.”
“I’ve literally made you an omelet every week for like two years,” Suga rolled his eyes, popping a bite into his own mouth.
“Have I ever told you I love you,” Daichi said taking another bite.
“Five minutes ago,” Suga reminded him.
“Well I love you even more than I did then,” Daichi said and Suga laughed again, snuggling in closer against Daichi as they ate their midnight snack.
