Chapter 1: A special customer

Chapter Text

A new batch of flowers had always been the highlight of Dreams week. Getting to unpack them and see the new bright colours and smell the new scents. It was lovely, getting to arrange them in the shop and make new handpicked bouquets.

He really didn’t know when it all changed. When he instead looked forward to fluffy brown hair, blue sweaters and the smell of books and hot chocolate.

To dark eyes that lit up when they found an especially pretty flower and Dream immediately knew he had to start wrapping. Or that heavenly scent that always had him close to crossing boundaries he didn’t think had even been thought about yet. And probably shouldn’t be thought about.

And yet he found himself longing for those moments with the pretty brown haired bookseller across the street that he’d known for barely two weeks and that he’d already grown too attached too.

Maybe it started that one time they were alone, the time at night.. or maybe just from the beginning. When, he wasn’t sure, but he knew it was beginning to become a problem, how much he was looking forward to it. So much he couldn’t focus when something important was happening.

—————Two weeks ago——————

Dream had been looking at order forms when he heard the bell ring, quickly stepping out into the front to greet the customer. “Hi! Welcome to Dreams florals, how can I help you?”

He smiled his brightest smile, only really now taking the person in front of him in. He felt his breath catch in his throat, eyes tracing over the man’s hair and eyes and- oh fuck he was staring.

Quickly he turned his gaze back to the order forms still in his hand, cheeks flushing a soft pink. “I think I’d quite like some flowers.”

The angel in front of him spoke, voice ringing heavenly through the small shop. Dream managed a small laugh, gesturing around. “I might be able to help with that.”

The smile he received in return made his heart skip a beat and forced himself to not just stare. “I’d hope so. Well, I actually want flowers for my bookstore, it’s always a bit.. lifeless. I thought a pop of colour might be nice.”

He nodded, walking around the counter. Walking past the other he got a bare hint of his scent and it made him want to turn to him and fall to his knees, beg to get to smell more of it. He swallowed, trying to keep his thoughts at bay while he looked around. “What would you like then? Any ideas?”
“Maybe something blue?”

Dream thought about it for a moment, then began picking out a few different flowers. Blue was a nice colour, sadly with not as many flowers as other colours. “You want that as a bouquet or living ones?”
“I think a bouquet is fine at first, just to see how it works out.”
“Of course. Anything else you’d like to add?”

The man seemed to think for a moment before he shook his head so Dream got to work, picking out different flowers and surrounding them with greenery, eventually displaying it. “That.. that’s beautiful. Thank you.”

He beamed proudly, he did pride himself in his ability to make bouquets. “I’m glad you like it. I’ll get it wrapped up, this should be around 20 dollars.”

Dream just hoped the way something that felt a suspicious amount like his inner beamed at the praise didn’t mean anything too deep..

He laid the flowers on his desk over a sheet, cutting the ends of them before wrapping them up so they were safe. “Here you go, all ready to go. Just set them in water as soon as you can and they should last about a week, maybe two.”
“Thank you.”

Dream was handed the money and he quickly put it away, waving at the man. He was almost sad to see him go but he couldn’t allow himself to be distracted, especially when the busy hours were about to start.

He did say he owned the bookstore though.. maybe he should try reading again sometime.

———————Present————————

Dream waved goodbye to a customer, already starting to pack and getting ready to close when he heard the door open. He didn’t look up from what he was doing, just finishing to pack something. “Hi, Welcome! Just so you know we’re about to close so I can’t do any large scale things anymore.”
“I know, don’t worry.”

His eyes shot up at the unmistakeable voice, lips already spreading into a smile. “Oh- its you.”
“Yeah, figured I’d come in now instead of tomorrow. You think you can get me something nice before you close up?”

Dream nodded quickly, walking up to his live plants. “What do you want this time?”
“I’m not so sure, I trust you’ll pick something good.”

He swallowed, glancing over at the man he now knew as George, the bookstore owner who he’d somehow developed a crush on, despite only talking to him a few times. “Maybe these, I think they’ll fit nicely with the rest of the plants you have.”

He took out a small pot with tiny yellow flowers spreading over the whole surface of the dirt, falling over the edges at a few points. “Whatever you say. Which colour are these?”
“They’re yellow. A nice addition to the purple ones you have.”

George moved over to the counter, already taking out his wallet. “Why do you close so early on Wednesdays anyway? It’s only like 4pm.”

Dream froze for a split second, hoping the other hadn’t noticed as he walked to the counter with him. “It’s just a personal preference, I like closing early on one day so I have more time to myself.”

It wasn’t a complete lie anyway, and he didn’t really need the other to know yet. “These ones are 25, I can get you a larger or smaller pot by Friday though if you prefer that, with different prices.”

Dream offered but took the money when George handed it to him, counting it before putting it away. “Well, you’re all set then. I guess I’ll probably see you again in a bit.”

He chuckled softly, leaning over the counter and pushing the pot towards his customer. “I suppose you will. Better prepare something nice for me.”
“I will, don’t worry.”

George smiled at him and Dream was pretty sure he could’ve died right then happily. He just hoped his scent wouldn’t spike, it liked to be.. expressive around the brunet. He really needed to get stronger smelling flowers again. “Well, bye then, Dream.”
“Bye!”

He waved as the other walked out, looking after him for a bit longer before turning back to his packing with a sigh. He really needed to get this under control.
