Aiden sized-up the massive amount of rubble that was separating the stuck Lucario from himself and his Rock-type friend and scratched his head.
“Soooo, I don’t mean to be rude but… if you’re actually a Lucario, can’t you just… y’know… punch, kick, boom, get outta there scot-free?”
The Lucario chuckled with a hint of embarrassment. “Ah, yeah, I’m not so great at the Fighting-type kinda stuff. I’m really much more suited to exploring than battling.” The part-Fighting-type admitted, a little sheepishly. “However aura reading? Now that’s something I have a lot of practice in.”
Aiden’s ears perked up with curiosity, “Oh?”
Kolin wagged his tail proudly, “Yeah, I can even see you guys through the debris- check it out! I can see that you’re a… Zoroark, and your friend next to you is... a... Lycanroc…? Hmm… And I- oh gosh!”
The Lucario stopped and stared in awe.
“How long have you guys been together for? Your auras are woven together so beautifully!”
This statement took both Aiden and Dominic off guard. A rosy blush appeared on both of the Pokémons’ cheeks and Aiden scrambled for something to say, wide-eyed.
“T-together? Oh-! You mean working t-together? A good few months n-now I’d say. Right, Dom?”
He coughed violently and nudged the brown Lycanroc in the chest with a little too much force to feel natural.
“Ow.” Dom looked down at Aiden with a slight furrow of concern on his brow.
Still blushing a little, Aiden was quick to change the subject,“A-anyway, I don’t think we ever caught your name. I’m Aiden, and this here is Dom. What should we call you, Mister…?”
A little confused but still thankful to be rescued, the trapped Lucario stepped back and closed his eyes, leaving his vision with nothing but rubble once again.
“Right! I’m Kolin, and I’m in here with my shuckle friend Knapp. He’s not much of a talker though, but with the juice he’s stored I won’t get dehydrated, at least.”
On the other side of the rocks, Dom had already begun to pick up armfuls of rubble, grunting with the effort, and depositing it at the other side of the cave as Aiden turned to get to work as well, “Kolin, right? It’s nice to meet you, we’ll uhh, be getting started now, but hope to see you face to face soon.”
Time passed with not much being said between the Dark and Rock-type Pokémon. They got on with their work, but shifting the debris felt never-ending and the cave was beginning to grow warmer.
The zoroark watched briefly as his hardworking friend wiped the sweat off his brow and readjusted his headband. Aiden’s heart skipped a beat, and a familiar blush crept back over his muzzle, causing him to look away.
Eager to break the silence, Aiden dropped off the particularly large stone he had shifted and turned his head towards Dom, “H-hey so, why aren’t you using your rocky powers again? Seems like they might be kinda handy.”
“The cave’s in a fragile state right now, it might just collapse if we use too much force.” Dom replied bluntly, continuing his work.
“Oh, uh, right. Yeah… that makes sense. It’s a good thing Kolin didn’t try to punch outta there then after all, huh.” Aiden looked down, his claws beginning to shake as he remembered how the Lucario had described their auras, as if they were intertwined. What could that possibly even mean?
“L-look man, I’m just gonna… get some.. rocks from over here…” The Zoroark made a start to walk away, but something in his demeanor caused Dom to suddenly toss the large boulder he was carefully carrying and speak up.
“Running from your problems never works…” He growled directly at Aiden, his voice tinged with frustration..
Startled by the sudden emotion, Aiden warily turned around and met his friend face to face.
With a sigh, the Rock-type continued. “…I’ve spent what feels like too long trying to get away from mine.” He scratched his head and averted his eyes for just a moment, before bringing them back to Aiden,“You need to come out and tell me exactly what’s been going on with you man.”
Dominic approached the dark canine slowly, the concern in his voice genuine, but Aiden was frozen in place. His heart began to pound, and the strange feeling from deep inside evolved sharply to anger.
“Why won’t you just let it go?!” Tears stung in Aiden’s eyes as he himself did not quite understand the force of what had just leapt out of his muzzle, and an unexplained pain bubbled up inside.
Dom was startled by his friend's harsh words, but only for a moment. He walked forward again, this time directly in front of the Dark-type Pokémon, and placed a confident but gentle paw on his shoulder.
“Because I care about you Aiden.”
The Zoroark could only stare back at the taller brown canine. His heart now felt like it might explode out of his chest, and his mind was racing. What could he mean by that? Does he care for me as his friend? Or…
With the slightest hint of a smile on Dominic’s muzzle, the Lycanroc gently released his paw from Aiden’s shoulder and shuffled back to continue where he’d left off.
Aiden shook the confusion from his head and exhaled slowly. He followed suit, bringing his focus back to the mission priority, though the air still felt thick with both dust and tension. His mind wandered… It felt as though the cave would be cleared long before his head would be.
“Oh Arceus, that sun feels nice!” Kolin stretched out his stiff body in the daylight, with his shuckle friend gripped tightly around his arms like a backpack. The warm light coated his fur and he enjoyed it a moment more before reaching into his actual pack, pulling out a thick bag of coins which he then handed over to Dom.
“There you go, I seriously owe you guys one!” He grinned and shook both Aiden and Dominic’s claws enthusiastically, “Thankfully my bird friend made it to you guys with the emergency rescue note so quickly. He can often get a bit lost…”
“Hey, it was nothing,” Dom replied, a little embarrassed at the praise, and quickly pocketed the reward. The guild needed every penny it could right now.
“It’s nice to be able to breathe again,” Aiden agreed, scenting the fresh air and brushing the last of the dust from his long red mane.
A quiet rumble sounded from Kolin’s stomach, and he chuckled. They had all been walking back towards Valley Town for a while now, and everyone was feeling quite exhausted, “Do you know a good place to get some grub? I feel like I could eat a Wailord’s portion of food right now… There’s only so much that juice can fill.” The shuckle on his back snorted, “Ah, no offense buddy…”
Aiden perked up a bit as they approached Valley Town, “Yeah, we’re just coming up to the local Charmeleon’s bar. Breezer cooks for us most breakfast and lunch-times so we know his food is excellent, but he could still do with the business,” He pointed a dark claw ahead, “Follow that road and you’ll be there before you know it.”
Kolin nodded whilst waving his farewells, “Alright, thanks again guys, I hope you both take care. Maybe we’ll meet again someday!” The Lucario’s stomach growled ever louder, and Aiden could barely stifle a giggle, waving goodbye to their new friend as Kolin set off, separating from the group at a faster speed; Combee-lining towards the food.
The Zoroark turned towards Dominic with a bittersweet smile of a job well-done, but the sight he was greeted with caused his jaw to hang open a little. The Rock-type had removed his signature headband to wipe the sweat from his brow in the sunshine, causing locks of shimmering Lycanroc mane to flow and bounce over his burly shoulders. Dom glanced down at Aiden in return, who was transfixed upon the white canine’s hair. He self-consciously pulled his headband back on, a hint of blush appearing over his muzzle, “C’mon, let's head back and get cleaned up.”
Both continued onwards. The long trip had been draining both physically and mentally, yet the guild, their home, was nearly in sight. Aiden was still uncertain how to feel about anything at all, but tried his best to make light conversation with Dominic. The tension between the two friends was still palpable, but now the Zoroark wasn’t certain what kind of tension it was exactly.
As they turned the corner towards home, both Dom and Aiden raised a claw to point excitedly. In a flash, their paws had touched, and it was almost too much. Aiden sharply retracted his hand as they both chuckled nervously, blush now pouring over the Zoroark’s face. He looked down at the Lycan-touched paw of his, and brought it up softly, secretly to his chest.
A small smile began to creep across his muzzle as they walked. He felt giddy, like a young Zorua, and he worked up the courage to glance up at Dom. Aiden was almost certain that the Lycanroc’s cheeks were glowing as well, but he couldn’t be sure.
The two had settled at home instantly, glad to be back in the comfort of the guild. It wasn’t luxury, but there was a big clean bath, which they had both stepped out of, thankful to be clean from the dusty cave and sweat from the efforts.
Glancing around again as he dried his fur, Aiden couldn’t help but notice the empty space around them, “We really did finish up a lot earlier than everyone else, huh?” His eyes wandered to the good looking Rock-type who somehow seemed more nude than ever as he shook himself dry.
For all Aiden’s subtleties, or lack thereof, this caught Dom’s attention, and he grinned smugly, “Makes me think about taking an extra long nap before dinner time.”
Aiden slowly looked up and caught Dominics gentle gaze.
“What do you think?”
The Zoroark’s heart pounded. Was this… an invitation?
“Y-you…” His heart felt like it would explode out of his chest, “…you mean like, together?”
Aiden scratched his head nervously but Dominic, a little surprised at the suggestion, looked at his friend warmly, “That doesn’t sound like a bad idea.”
Dom turned away quickly so as to not let his best friend see just how flustered his own face was in the moment, and headed towards the bedroom they shared.
“Wait! You mean right now?!” Panic took over Aiden, and his mind ran a thousand thoughts a second. But bravery and curiosity took back control, and he dashed after the Lycanroc, as if using Quick Attack.
Creaking around the corner of the dimly lit bedroom, Aiden could see the silhouette of the well defined brown canine, already laying down and resting, his back facing towards the door, but with plenty of room beside him.
The tension in the air was as thick as Misu by this point, and though Aiden could not sense it, Dominic’s heart was racing just as much to match his. What was he doing? He should be sitting up, spending more time with his friend and comforting him, not laying away from him. But he felt that surely his boiling red face could be seen despite the low light.
As much as Dominic’s own mind raced, nothing could have prepared him for what happened next. All of a sudden, he felt Aiden’s paws and claws wrap tightly around his body, pulling himself close to the Rock-type in one swift motion.
“Hey, what-?” The Lycanroc turned his head to see what was going on, startled by the swift motion with the both of them having been so on edge, but what he saw softened his posture.
Aiden was trembling against him as he held on for dear life. His eyes were screwed shut and tears formed at the corners. He dared not meet the gaze of the Pokémon that he clung to, but he was there. He wasn’t running any longer.
The sight of his frightened friend put all would-be questions to rest for Dom, as he slowly turned his body to face the Dark-type. Gently grasping the back of Aiden’s head, he guided it into his chest fur, tenderly holding him.
Dominic’s calm breathing and soft fur brought Aiden back from the edge of the emotional platform he was standing on. With a shaky breath, Aiden’s heart began to calm, and the tiredness from the day won over the two Pokémon, as they drifted off into a silent, deep sleep.
