Chapter Text
Marinette's POV:
Her feet pounded against the pavement, the sound echoing in her ears as she sprinted away from the threats that pursued her. Each breath came in sharp gasps, her lungs aflame with exertion. The all-consuming urge to collapse weighed heavily on her, a seductive whisper that promised respite from this relentless chase, yet her resolve hardened into unyielding steel. Surrender was not an option—not now, not ever.
So far, fate had favored her. She had managed to elude her relentless pursuers. With a little more luck, perhaps she would have a chance of making it. Yet, the weight of the threats she faced pressed heavily on her heart. It might be easier to bear if these were enemies she was fleeing from, but she was running from people she once considered friends.
Adrian, Nino, Kim, Max, Mylène, Ivan, Juleka, Rose, Marc, Nathaniel, Sabrina, Chloé…Memories of their faces and laughter filled her with a profound sense of loss. The thought that she had failed them twisted her stomach into knots, and she knew it would take more than mere luck, but a miracle to save them now. But if she could locate Master Fu, he might hold the key to their salvation. This was her first concrete lead in over a month, and she clung to the hope that this time, it would pan out.
The forest line loomed in the distance. If the rumors she and Alya had heard were true, there should be a lone cabin in the woods beyond a winding creek. That's where Master Fu was supposed to be. She clutched the hope tightly in her chest. If she doesn't find Master Fu, she and Alya will have no choice but to start from scratch.
Marinette dashed toward the towering trees, her heart racing as she weaved between them. The safety of the forest felt like a fragile cocoon until a distant shout shattered the stillness, sending a chill down her spine.
"Marinette! We know you're here. There's nowhere left to run."
A wave of dread washed over her. How had they found her? She had taken every precaution, carefully calculating her route through the woods to elude them. With a sense of impending doom, she hurled herself against the nearest tree, pressing her back into its rough, jagged bark. It scratched at her skin, a painful and tangible reminder of her dire situation.
The underbrush came alive with the cacophony of crunching leaves and snapping twigs, the sound of multiple pairs of footsteps growing closer. Marinette trembled uncontrollably, her heart pounding like a war drum as she slapped her palm over her mouth to stifle any sound that might escape.
Nature itself seemed to hold its breath, the rustlings of the forest falling eerily silent as if the woods were bracing for the confrontation. Marinette's heart felt like it would burst from her chest as she listened intently, paralyzed with anxiety. Every second felt like an eternity. Why had they suddenly gone quiet? She dared not move a muscle, certain that even the slightest rustle could betray her hiding spot.
One agonizing minute passed, then another, stretching her nerves to their breaking point. Finally, the same voice rang out again, slicing through the tension like a knife. This time, however, she recognized it. It was Nino, his tone brimming with determination and a chilling cruelty that sent a shiver down her spine.
"Don't you see this is foolish, Marinette? Where are you even trying to go? There's nothing out here. Look...I know you're scared but don't you miss your friends? We've certainly missed you. Just come out from wherever you're hiding, and we'll take you home. I promise we just want the best for you."
Marinette clenched her jaw, fighting an incredulous scoff that threatened to escape. They wanted what was best for her? Yeah, right. She let Nino's empty pleadings slip through one ear and out the other.
Seeing that she wasn't going to respond, Nino exhaled deeply, frustration evident in his voice. "Mari, please just give up," he implored, his plea laced with desperation. "You know we're going to find you eventually, so why make this harder for all of us?"
Marinette remained stubbornly quiet, pressing her lips together, allowing her silence to be her answer. Then, a branch snapped several feet away from her, and her body involuntarily tensed at the sound, a primal instinct urging her to stay alert. At that moment, another voice emerged, smooth and reassuring as honey—Chloé.
"This is ridiculous," Chloé said with an air of exasperation. "Come on out, Dupain-Cheng; it's time you return home with us. You're outnumbered, and reinforcements are on their way as I speak. This cat-and-mouse game is over. You and Alya had a good run, but playtime's over."
Each of Cholé’s words were laced with a cold finality, as if she believed Marinette had already lost. Yet Marinette felt an unyielding spark flicker within her. Nothing was over yet. Yes, she was outnumbered, but she still had her lucky charm left to use. And if the worst should befall her, she took solace in knowing that Alya would still be free to continue on without her.
As if reading her thoughts, Chloé's voice turned razor-sharp, digging into Marinette's soul with each word. "If you're wondering about Alya, I should tell you that we're getting closer to locating her. Adrian caught her scent and has been on her tail for the past half hour. He's going to find her, and once she's ours, she'll never be able to help you again."
Marinette felt a cold wave of worry rush through her. No, no, no...She prayed Chloé was lying, but deep down, she knew her former classmate was speaking only the truth. If Adrian found Alya, she wouldn't be able to escape, not even with the Fox Miraculous. It wasn't a lack of faith in Alya’s abilities that plagued her; it was the knowledge that Adrian had grown stronger since the incident. Adrian was more powerful than ever before, and he would never allow Alya to slip through his fingers.
Master Fu could be in the forest as promised, but reaching him wouldn't matter if Alya ended up hurt by Adrian trying to subdue her. She and Alya could always return to the forest if they managed to evade Adrian. And if not...Well, at least they'd go down together.
Marinette braced herself as she reached her decision and took her hand off her mouth. There was no more time left to waste as she heard Nino and Chloé wander around, still trying to find her. She swung her yo-yo into the air, the familiar words slipping from her lips," Lucky Charm!"
Six Months Earlier:
Just when it seemed everything was falling into place, reality shattered around her. The world had not transformed under dark clouds or ice but instead sunniness. The day everything changed started as an ordinary, almost mundane one for Marinette.
The school day had just begun, and the morning sun streamed through the tall windows, casting a warm, golden light into the bustling hallways. Marinette attended her classes, and everything seemed normal. She studied, spoke with her friends, and was enjoying the afternoon as much as she could.
However, despite the vibrant atmosphere surrounding her, a heavy cloud of unease hung in her mind—Adrien was absent. His absence was deeply palpable, a missing piece that made everything feel slightly off. It was painfully clear that his father had whisked him away yet again for another grueling photo shoot, pulling him from the life he could be enjoying at school with friends.
Marinette's heart ached at the thought of the control Mr. Agreste wielded over his son. She resented how he restricted Adrien's choices, but she respected Adrien's wishes to keep this struggle private. All he ever wanted was his father's approval, and the heavy expectations of the Agreste name loomed like a storm cloud over him. It had surprised her that Mr. Agreste had even accepted their relationship; she had expected resistance, yet he seemed to tolerate it.
For several months, Marinette and Adrien had been navigating the exhilarating yet complicated waters of their relationship. It all started with the revelation of their secret identities. It hadn't been easy at first; both of them were nervous wrecks, but after learning they had fallen in love on all sides of the masks, their bond only grew.
The connection they shared felt deeper and more profound now that they had dispelled the shadows of secrecy. No more masks or fabricated stories stood between them; they could finally embrace their true selves without fear. They tackled hurdles together—confessing their knowledge of each other's identities to Master Fu and revealing their relationship to Adrien's father—each obstacle strengthening their bond and commitment to one another. Together, they had forged a love that could withstand anything, hand in hand against the world.
Marinette sighed dreamily, her thoughts consumed by visions of her beloved Chaton. He was perfect in nearly every way—his confident smile, the way his eyes lit up when he laughed, and the reassuring presence he brought to her life made her feel incredibly blessed. Tikki often said it was fate that drove them together, and perhaps there was some truth to that.
She could have easily lost herself in these affectionate thoughts for hours, allowing the world around her to fade, if not for the sharp sound of Alya clearing her throat. The sudden interruption pulled Marinette back to her surroundings, which were filled with the sounds of laughter and the clinking of plates in the busy cafeteria.
"Hey, girl," Alya greeted, her voice bright and cheerful. She settled into the seat next to Marinette, her tray piled high with colorful fruits and snacks.
"Hi, Alya! Where's Nino?" Marinette asked playfully, raising an eyebrow. "Aren't you two usually glued to the hip?"
Alya’s laughter rang out, warm and contagious, and her smile lit up her face, forming charming little crinkles at the corners of her eyes. "We are, just like you and your golden boy. But as for Nino, I don't know. He mentioned something about a secret project he had to work on."
"Oh?" Marinette asked, her curiosity piqued.
Alya reached down and picked up a shiny red apple from her lunch tray, taking a crisp bite. "He said he'd be done soon," she murmured, her voice muffled by the crunching of the fruit. "Who knows what that boy is up to."
Marinette shrugged playfully, a mischievous smile spreading across her lips. "It's probably something special for your three-year dating anniversary coming up next week."
Alya rolled her eyes as she set her apple down. "I figured that, but you know how nosy I can be. I really wish he'd drop me a hint or something. But no, he said—and I quote—that his lips are sealed." She threw her hands up in mock vexation. "Honestly, I could strangle him if I didn't love him so much."
Marinette giggled at Alya's empty threat. She remembered the fateful day she had accidentally locked Nino and Alya in a cage together. That seemingly innocent mistake sparked a romance that had blossomed into something truly beautiful. Marinette couldn't help but feel a surge of happiness whenever she witnessed their connection.
"Anyways," Alya continued, her voice shifting with interest. "Where's Adrian? I thought he said he'd be at school today?"
Marinette frowned as she answered," I guess a photoshoot? That's the only thing that I can think of, but it's weird he didn't text me. He promised he'd message me if anything ever came up."
"Maybe his dad took his phone?" Alya suggested in an attempt to ease Marinette's concern.
"Maybe," Marinette agreed, "but something still feels off." An uncomfortable silence draped over the two girls as they exchanged worried glances, both lost in their thoughts for a moment.
Suddenly, a loud clatter interrupted their quiet contemplation as Nino burst through the cafeteria doors, slamming his tray onto their table with a resounding thud. The unexpected noise startled the girls, and Alya yelped, instinctively hurling her half-eaten apple at her boyfriend.
"Seriously, Nino?!" Alya exclaimed, her voice a mixture of surprise and playful annoyance.
Nino dodged the apple, his reflexes kicking in as he leaned to the side, the fruit sailing past him with a soft whoosh. A triumphant grin spread across his face, illuminating his features with a sense of joy as he charged forward. In a heartbeat, he closed the distance between himself and Alya, enveloping her in a warm embrace.
Seconds later, Nino released his grip on Alya so he could sit across from them. With a theatrical flair, he leaned back in his seat with a smirk and said, "Sorry, babe. I just got done working on my top-secret project. I figured since I'm done, I can hang out with you lovely ladies." As he delivered his line, he shot a playful wink in Alya’s direction, which elicited a dramatic eye roll from her.
"Yeah...Okay, hot stuff," Alya replied, her tone dripping with playful sarcasm, the corners of her mouth twitching as she fought to keep a straight face.
Nino's eyes sparkled as he beamed at Alya before he quickly noticed the empty chair beside him, an expression of confusion furrowing his brow. "Where's my bro at?" he inquired, glancing expectantly toward Marinette, who shrugged and provided her best guess about his whereabouts.
After a brief pause, the three fell effortlessly into a comfortable rhythm, laughter mingling with light-hearted banter as they exchanged jokes. Time seemed to slip away, the chatter of the cafeteria fading into the background, until the clang of the bell rang out, signaling the end of lunch and pulling them back into focus.
"Well, I guess the fun's over," Alya said with a sulky pout, her shoulders slumping slightly.
The trio of friends reluctantly stood up, their chairs scraping against the linoleum floor as they began to clear their trays. Just as they gathered their things to leave, a thunderous boom erupted from outside the building, jolting them into alertness. The three friends exchanged bewildered glances before dashing to the nearest window.
Marinette pressed her palms against the cool glass, her heart racing as she peered outside. Initially, confusion washed over her, but as the truth of the situation began to dawn on her, denial quickly followed. Panic seized her as she turned on her heel, disregarding Alya's alarmed shouts behind her. Without a second thought, she plunged into the throng of students, her heart thumping, desperation fueling her as she navigated through the crowd toward the front doors of the school.
Once Marinette made it outside, she almost sank to her knees in despair. The vibrant school grounds, once alive with the joyful laughter of students, now lay in ruin before her eyes. The once-polished benches were splintered and askew. Fallen lampposts sprawled haphazardly on the ground, their broken glass glimmering ominously in the sunlight. Even the fountain, a centerpiece of beauty and serenity, had succumbed to the devastation; its once-clear waters now burst from jagged cracks, launching sprays of water wildly onto the grass.
All the damage, however, was overshadowed by the haunting sight of several students lying on the ground, each one wounded. Some appeared only slightly hurt, with small cuts and scrapes marring their skin, while others lay motionless, their injuries suggesting a far more severe fate.
As she took in the harrowing sight, a frantic breath caught in Marinette's throat, her mind racing with confusion. What could have happened to cause such destruction? The anguished cries for help reverberated around her, each one a sharp reminder of the urgency of the situation, amplifying her feelings of helplessness. It was as if time had stopped in this terrible moment, and the world around her had turned into a nightmare.
Suddenly, a sharp pinch in her right side jolted her back to herself. She glanced down, finding Tikki nestled beside her, the little creature's eyes wide with concern. At that moment, Marinette understood that she could not afford to dwell on her fears. There were students around her, hurting and in desperate need of help. They needed her; they needed Ladybug.
Sprinting as fast as she could, Marinette dashed to the far side of the building, shielded from the prying eyes of onlookers. Tears streamed down her cheeks as Tikki fluttered up beside her, a tiny beacon of reassurance.
"Tikki, spots on!" Marinette gasped. In an instant, a bright flash of pink light enveloped her, casting a warm glow around her. As the transformation was completed, she emerged as her courageous alter ego.
Without hesitation, she raced toward the nearest student sprawled on the ground, showing clear signs of distress. Marinette knelt beside the sobbing girl, her heart aching at the sight, and gently gathered her into her arms, allowing the girl to weep against her shoulder.
"L...Ladybug," the girl stammered, her voice thick with despair as she struggled to catch her breath.
"Shhh," Marinette whispered soothingly, brushing a stray hair from the girl's face. "Everything will be okay, I promise. Can you tell me what happened?"
The girl, no older than a freshman, looked up at Marinette with wide, tear-filled eyes, her expression a mixture of shock and fear; her words tumbled out in a frantic rush, laced with panic.
"It's Monarch. He attacked us, and there's someone else with him. We didn't stand a chance…Please help me Ladybug, my leg hurts so bad. I think it's broken."
Marinette cast a quick glance at the girl's legs, and a wave of nausea surged through her as she took in the sight of one leg horrifically mangled. It wasn't just broken, it was a twisted, mutilated mess that left no doubt in Mainette's mind that the girl might very well face the loss of her leg if her magic ladybugs didn't intervene. The girl strained to follow her sight, attempting to catch a glimpse of her leg, but Marinette swiftly intervened, tilting her torso just enough to block her line of vision.
"Everything's fine," Marinette spoke softly. "I'm going to go find Monarch and his partner. But you have to promise me that you'll stay put, okay?"
The girl looked up at Marinette, the flicker of fear in her eyes gradually melting into trust as she nodded in agreement. With that promise secured, Marinette carefully adjusted her position, gently maneuvering the girl's limbs to ensure she was resting comfortably on the ground. Once the girl was settled, Marinette stood up, her eyes scanning her surroundings for any sign of her enemy. Tension hung in the air, thick with anticipation, as she prepared herself to confront the looming threat.
Of course, Monarch was behind all of the chaos. It shouldn't have come as a surprise, yet the brutality of his actions shocked her to the core. Monarch was notorious for his cruelty and wickedness, but he had never before descended to the depths of viciously wounding innocents. Even Killing them...And who was accompanying him? Mayura had been absent for months. Regardless, it didn't matter. Monarch would pay for this heinous act—she would see to it.
She pulled out her colorful yo-yo, the vibrant string coiling around her fingers as she attempted to reach Chat through her communicator, but silence greeted her. Adrian must not have been transformed yet, and the thought nagged at her—how long would it take for him to discover that something was amiss? For now, she realized, she'd have to go ahead without him.
Just as she steeled herself to move forward, the frantic shouts of Alya and Nino pierced the tense air as they burst outside. Time seemed to freeze as they locked eyes with Ladybug, terror evident in their stances. Marinette instinctively opened her mouth, intending to call out a warning to urge them to find safety. However, before she could utter a sound, Alya suddenly shouted, "Look out!"
Marinette barely had a moment to register what was happening before she was suddenly tackled to the ground, the impact robbing her of her breath. The unexpected ambush took her entirely by surprise. The shock of it all stole away crucial moments as her assailant climbed on top of her back, pressing their entire weight on her with an oppressive force.
Desperately, she tried to fight back, her muscles straining as she thrashed her body side to side, gasping for air between harsh, desperate pants. Every ounce of strength she had surged through her, and she kicked out with her legs, attempting to dislodge the figure that pinned her down. But whoever or whatever was on top of her didn't budge.
"Get off me!" Marinette growled, her voice laced with fury as she struggled against her assailant's grip. With each desperate kick, she channeled all of her energy, determined to break free. But just as she felt the slightest give, her body went stiff at the sound of malicious laughter.
"Well, well, well, Ladybug...I was wondering when you'd finally show up," came the taunting voice of Monarch. His words were filled with malice but sounded distant. If it wasn't Monarch who had her pinned down, then who was it?
Marinette strained to lift her head as high as she could and yelled, "Monarch, I demand that you stop now. What you're doing is wrong—you've hurt so many people. Please stop and let me heal everyone you've harmed."
Monarch said nothing momentarily, and Marinette prayed that he would finally do something good for once and recognize the pain he'd caused. To her disappointment, he didn't.
"Stop? My dear Ladybug," Monarch scoffed. "I've come too far to stop now. You and that pesky cat have repeatedly thwarted my plans, but I won't be stopped this time. Isn't that right, son?"
Son? Marinette's mind went blank, struggling to comprehend Monarch's unsettling words. Suddenly, with a swift and forceful motion, the person above her turned her around to face them. As her eyes adjusted to the sudden shift, she gasped in shock, recognition flooding her senses.
"Chat?" The name escaped her lips, disbelief rushing through her as she stared into the familiar green eyes of the boy she loved.
