DanganRonpa Unabridged Timeline

Summary:

A nearly exhaustive timeline of the DanganRonpa franchise using non-localized translations when available for maximum accuracy. A few relevant real-world events are thrown in too as fun trivia.

All the best to the spirit of the original, if there is such a thing.

Notes:

Sorry to mobile readers, but I am only implementing footnotes as hover-over text boxes. Fortunately, the footnotes only explain why I placed certain things in certain places, or provide my personal thoughts about an event. You're really only missing out on flavor text, or me admitting I just stuck something where it made the most sense to stick it.

As of now, aside from minor syntactical and illustrative editing, I am satisfied with the timeline. I have not replayed the games for all side dialogue, but I am satisfied.
Oh I forgor to put the V3 day-by-day play-by-play. Meh. I'll get to it when I get to it.

Chapter 1: Introduction + Premodern Japan

Summary:

Provided is a nearly exhaustive timeline of the DanganRonpa series for whatever reasons you may want it.

It is recommended to read the timeline by clicking "entire work" as it was too long to fit in one chapter.

Please be warned that DanganRonpa contains many dark and heavy themes. While I am not gratuitous about them, I do not sugarcoat the language. Please be warned there are events of rape, sexual assault, sexual trafficking, pedophilia, necrophilia, incest, and much more.
This is not a substitute for experiencing the series: this is not about preserving the suspense or mystery. Obviously, there are spoilers for the entire series.

If I missed/forgot/misinterpreted something, please contact me with your source and I'll add you to the Bibliography.

~> – It was sometime after this point, but probably not by long.

~< – It was sometime before this point, but probably not by long.

[S] - Information provided by non-canon spin-offs like DanganRonpa S.

Some notes:

All student birthdays will be calculated using the following assumptions unless explicitly stated otherwise in the text. Be aware that all Hope's Peak student ages maintain a margin of error of ±one year, again unless explicitly stated otherwise

  1. No student was held back nor skipped a year.
  2. All classes follow traditional Japanese class groupings wherein students from April 2nd year 1- April 1st year 2 attend the same class together.
  3. Every student attended two years at a regular high school, were scouted during that year, then attended Hope's Peak starting the following year for an additional three years. This is not a hard rule for every student and please keep in mind if a student was scouted their first or third year, it may affect many other items related to them on the timeline.

I aim toward the middle of age ranges. E.g. I consider 31-33 to be early 30s, 34-36 to be mid 30s, and 37-39 to be late 30s. 30 is not being in your 30s, that is being 30. So if a character is described as being in their late 30s, I will go with 38, with a margin of error of one. If a character is only described as being in their 30s, I will place them at 35 with a margin of error of 4. Fortunately, not too many events are predicated on having an exact number, almost exclusively the birth years are affected by this.

Regarding headshots: all pixel sprites are made by me with the exception of a few vanilla sprites from the games-- though I have edited a lot of them with minor changes. Some designs are non-canonical or based off of limited descriptions given in the light novels. The Togami siblings are completely self-made, but were too recurring to simply replace them with generic NPC faces. Some characters have been changed slightly. I have used Takaaki's beta design because it's literally just him but wearing a beanie, and it helps differentiate him from Kiyotaka aesthetically. Characters like Blue Ink have no canonical appearance, but have appeared in some capacity and are represented as such. We never see Blue Ink, but volume 3 has a picture of a princess skeleton with Borges in the eye, and she was described as Cinderella in the same volume, thus: she is represented by a skull with a tiara and a gold eye. This is a representative image of her character if not an actual depiction. Some designs are taken from (as far as I can tell) official if not canon manga.

Regarding how I will be handling real-world information: I will note the date when a piece of media was published as it is relevant to the timeline. As much as I would love to put the release date and time of each episode of Sonia's Jdramas in the timeline (which I could since I have that information) I have settled only to include the airing schedule so that at least its run period is noted. If a real-world person is canonized as a character in DanganRonpa BY BEING EXPLICITLY MENTIONED (example: I don't doubt that Agatha Christie still wrote that book, but I am not including every editor, publisher, critic, and what have you related to that book's timeline. If Christie isn't mentioned, she's not going in the timeline... unless my caprices demand otherwise.) then only their birth or any other actions mentioned will be recorded. I have opted to completely omit WWII from the timeline outside of the way it directly impacted the story vis-a-vis Japan's canon post-war economic boom. It is canon, and Hitler was referenced indirectly by Hiroyuki, but I don't feel comfortable including something that serious and with ramifications that still affect us to this day as heavily as they do into this timeline about the silly anime murder bear game. It just feels in bad taste AT BEST. Crossover characters' information will be included as fully into the timeline as is possible but only as it relates to themselves and important peripheral characters (example: If we decide that the person that fought Gonta was the actual E. Honda and not just an ambiguous reference, I am not including the entire timeline of every character in Street Fighter). Mary Crane's history was added to the timeline, but Al's wife, Mrs. Chambers, is not included because she does not have a direct bearing on the plot. I'm obviously not going to go into the whole history of, say, New York just because it's mentioned. I'll mention any relevant events if and as they are mentioned. Otherwise, New York existing is only as relevant as it pertains to a given character.

Of the athletes he's coached: He led a rugby team of high school delinquents and a baseball club on the verge of being shut down to win the national play-offs. It is rumored he is coaching a famous Japanese pitcher playing in the American leagues. He coached a baseball player who was then scouted for the major leagues while still in middle school. He coached a figure skater who performed six and a half spins. He coached a tennis player who won a match that lasted 36 hours.

[S] Celeste once cleaned out a shady online casino run by a rival gang of the Kuzuryuus.

"A while back," Chiaki played a bunch of rhythm games at the arcade and played them so much that her hands started moving along with music in regular games and it took her a while to kick the habit. Chiaki has played in small local tournaments but never a big tourney. Chiaki has played around with RPG Maker and made stupid and unfair games every so often. Chihiro didn't get much allowance as a kid, so he could only spin the gachapon machine once a week. Chihiro signed an NDA with the company funding his Alter Ego project.

Fuyuhiko's dad would take him fishing and gut the fish to make fresh sashimi. Fuyuhiko's mom apparently got really into coconuts one year and had them just rolling all over the floor. Fuyuhiko is nearly killed during fights between his mother and father. A historical biography was written about Fuyuhiko's dad. Fuyuhiko appears to have had negative experiences with people who eat hot dogs at movie theaters. When Natsumi and Fuyuhiko went to amusement parks, she would create minute-specific schedules and drag him around. Fuyuhiko appears to have had a traumatic incident with mascots. One time Natsumi tried to kill Fuyuhiko because he said she looked like a doll. Fuyuhiko would climb trees to avoid lectures from his parents, and they would often get the dogs out and shake the tree to get him down; Peko has stated to have climbed the trees when Fuyuhiko couldn't climb down himself. Fuyuhiko had a great-grandfather in the navy whom he was on good terms with. Fuyuhiko has a cousin who shows him her weapons but won't let him touch them. Whenever Natsumi cooked fried noodles for the temple festival a huge line would form. Fuyuhiko seems to have a bit of experience cooking yakisoba. Natsumi had a large number of contracts with hand towel companies. A faction of the Kuzuryuu clan claimed they wanted Natsumi to be the next leader, but she turned them down. A cat used to visit Peko's dojo. Fuyuhiko had/has a pet dog and Peko once had a pet finch. Peko is most active at night and early morning.

Gundam avoided playing or holding hands with other kids by staying close to his teacher. Gundam ditched folk dance ceremonies by hanging out with a likeminded nurse. Gundam has pupils around the world whom he claims know how to avoid lethal genetics and will carry out his will and conduct no atrocious experiments. They were probably Very Normal during the Tragedy.

"Until recently," Hifumi only attended Boo-ko only-genre doujin events, but began attending all-genre events to culture the attendees. When Hifumi found Boo-ko, he just liked drawing and had no friends. He liked talking to the student council-type girls so he could yell at them. When he first started watching Boo-ko, he wasn't very impressed, but then he kept having dreams of going on dates with Boo-ko. Afterwards, he bought all of the Boo-ko merch he could and started creating doujin so that he could see the look of love on her face again. He completed an entire stack of manga about her and published it on his website. Hifumi is at his busiest at the end of the year. Hifumi has gone through the cycle of being a chuunibyou three times. Hifumi would go into stores and buy a piece of candy and request all coins as change so that he could dump them into gachapon machines. He has put coins into thousands of machines trying to complete a specific toy set and would often buy out the machines. Hifumi has played pool with other creators in offline meetings before. He has also done anime theme karaoke when he meets up with his online friends. Hifumi frequently goes to live performances of anime themes where the actors come out to announce a show's soft release.

Hiyoko used to play at flower gardens as a kid where she'd stomp the flowers. Saionjis allegedly die crazy deaths due to conspiracies and assassinations. Hiyoko has had pins put in her shoes, dead mice scattered on her bed, and it's possible that her food has been poisoned and a stage light was attempted to be used to fall on her.

Ibuki has screamed in 6 libraries and was promptly banned from each one. Sometimes, Ibuki creates entire songs in the bath.

Kazuichi's mom once found and burned all of his porn mags. Once, Kazuichi attached an engine to the school's chalk line machine for the soccer field but it escaped from the school entrance going full speed. Kazuichi once saw something on TV about monkeys liking hot springs.

Kyouko once saw a murder that resembled a "Monobeast sashimi" art piece Jatarou made in DanganRonpa S. Kyouko has been in cases where social media provided clues to the whereabouts of a missing person or information discrediting a suspect's alibi. She has also seen cases where the culprit doctored photos to fabricate an alibi. After one case was solved, a family member of the victim clutched a photo to her chest.

Mahiru always falls asleep during movies that aren't comedies in the theater. Mahiru rode a carousel when she was little and her mom took a picture. One time Mahiru's mom brought her some MREs as souvenirs.

Mikan slept on public benches overnight on days she didn't want to go home as a kid. Mikan used to make sand castles as a kid, but someone would always destroy them before she finished. Mikan used to help people bury things. When Mikan runs into the library, whoever was chasing her would give up and nobody would pick on her in the library. Whenever Mikan got caramels, she'd cut it into four pieces and cherish a piece a day. Apparently Mikan gets slapped the least when she chooses regular salty flavored popcorn (despite this, choosing this option gives the least amount of friendship points indicating that while it was the safest option for her, it's far from her favorite). Mikan has read some of Touko's books. Mikan's entire body was wrapped in duct tape once. A cosplayer once asked if they could borrow one of MIkan's bandages, thinking that she was cosplaying as a nurse, and they got upset at Mikan when she thought they were injured. Mikan has always wanted to ride a carousel but has only ever seen pictures of them.

On Mondo's debut ride, he was told to ride back door and was surrounded by police, but he beat them all up. By the time of him entering Hope's Peak, Mondo is on a ten strike run of being rejected by girls because he keeps getting nervous and yelling. Every morning until Chuck died, he brought Mondo the newspaper and would then beg to be walked as a reward. Mondo used to stare at gachapon machines and Daiya would bash them open for him. There was an in-depth article published in a motorcycle magazine about the Crazy Diamonds.

Nagito has hurt his neck three times and back seven times from watching movies from the first row. Nagito has been to an amusement park once with his parents. One time when Nagito's laundry got soaked from a sudden rainstorm, his lucky underwear was the only thing that stayed dry. Nagito was invovled in a bank robbery in some capacity at some point.

Nekomaru used to play capture the flag alone as a kid. Nekomaru never participated in P.E. as a kid because of his heart condition. Nekomaru once met Gonta while living out in the wilderness. They climbed rock walls together and showered under waterfalls. Nekomaru met a team manager named Daisuke while they were in the hospital for similar heart defects. Daisuke died in the hospital before he could see his team win, so Nekomaru took over his first job as a manager and led Daisuke's team to victory.

Sakura once found the tale of a journey of an ancient, bygone people and followed the trail herself. Sakura's training includes self-sufficiency so she has studied how to cook. Sakura is also fairly talented at chess. Sakura's father taught her to appreciate enka. While training, Sakura calms her heart by listening to the wind, the river, the treetops, insects, and the footsteps of animals. Sakura has held rabbits before and they're never scared of her. Many martial artists have given up on martial arts after losing to Sakura. From a small child, Sakura trained in matches against wrestling medalists and sappred with boxing champions. Also since childhood, Sakura has trained by hitting a tire with a sledgehammer.

Sayaka has had a few cooking shows offer to bring her on as a guest. Sayaka used to play Othello a lot with her dad when she was pretty young. Sayaka has been in an idol movie. Sayaka is jittery all day if she skips exercising. Sayaka's idol group has a follower on social media who sometimes leaves prophetic comments. Once, Sayaka posted about a member's surprise birthday party and they commented that that member's new solo single would make top 3 on the charts and it did. Sayaka's "parent's" once bought her a dress that matched the colors of her then-favorite idol.

When Sonia wanted to be alone, she would sneak out of the castle to hide in, presumably, the National Library. When Sonia was very little, she visited an amusement park on royal business. In Novoselic, a prominent nobleman lost his prized makango. He was betrothed to a woman, but because of a custom the engagement fell apart. Women began pursuing him for his wealth, and shortly after other nobles and socialites reported their makangos missing too. The country went mad as couples watched their relationships fall apart. This appears to have happened in Sonia's lifetime. Sonia would visit academies and it was her duty to cut the largest skong each year to begin the school festivals. Novoselic has a fairy tale similar to Momotaro where the hero teams up with a makango and skong and they eviscerate and repel invaders from the moon.

Teruteru's siblings make 100 million anually. Teruteru has only ever seen monkeys at the zoo. Teruteru caught a beetle in the mountains when he was little and fed it veggies.

Touko has an appreciation for gachapon machines because they never betrayed her. Touko used to write with a pen, but it was too inconvenience since she has e-editors. One time Touko met a fan who gave her his surface-level thoughts about one of her books. When Touko tried to explain the deeper meaning, he ran away in the middle of her explanation. Shou has to hide her doujin that she buys so Touko doesn't find it and get rid of it. Touko was once invited to play darts but they oly invited her to mock her for how poorly she played. Shou has possibly gone to butler cafes. Touko was once invited on a date where they listened to music. The date seemed to go so poorly that she snapped the CD in half afterwards. When Shou has the overwhelming urge to kill, but I guess can't for whatever reason, she does a few songs of karoke and it helps relieve the urge. One of Touko's novels made a cameo in a manga Hifumi read. Touko spends all of her free time writing and is serialized in a magazine. She has won many literary prizes.

Yasuhiro is at his busiest at the beginning of the year. Yasuhiro once bought a cursed dwarf gown that reminds him of Jataro's mask. Yasuhiro has also purchased a mermaid mummy, a monkey's paw, a talisman of Abe no Seimei, along with various OOPArts. Yasuhiro once collected a series of global OOPArt themed toys from a gachapon machine and didn't stop until he had all of them. Yasuhiro bought his bikini briefs because the salesman at the seminar told him that "the higher the wasit, the higher the luck." Yasuhiro suggests that he accepted the invitation to Hope's Peak with the express purpose of meeting Makoto Naegi for his luck. Yasuhiro once shined a debt collector's shoes which bought him just enough time to run away. There were eyewitness accounts of sky fish in Kamata Ota Ward in Tokyo. Yasuhiro sent a warning letter to Haneda Airport next to Kamato offering to disspell the sky fish. The years Yasuhiro was held back he went into hiding from the yakuza and had to drink literal mud. An assassin tried to kill him with a blowgun at one point. Yasuhiro was visited by an alien spaceshit which abducted only part of his hamburger which made him realize it wasn't pure beef.

Kiyotaka wears his school uniform every day, even on holidays. Makoto had a dog as a kid, but he's been dead for a while. Aoi and Yuuta have played gun games at arcades but they would always die immediately and start arguing about it. Rantaro used to argue with one of his sisters about whose Christmas cake was bigger. Akane used to dumpster dive in parks but would sometimes get caught up in turf wars or run into trouble with new divers. Akane would sometimes go on all-day fishing trips with her siblings. In extreme summer and winter weather, Akane takes breaks in the library. Akane has gone to training camps for gymnastics. Mukuro wears heavy duty boots and runs 4 miles for training. Rantaro earned his title when he was traveling the Savanna and came across a remote village where he helped research a rare disease that only affected them which caused him to start getting famous. Rantaro has apparently met Killua Zoldyck, Kurapika, Hisoka, and Bell Cranel or characters inspired by those characters on his travels. Gonta once saved many lives by discovering a parasitic worm that was causing disease. Kotoko once appeared on a show with a summer gag episode. One of Tsumugi's skinny friends got into sumo manga and it was a nightmare to create a suit for them. Jataro made a clay doll in a research project that was "ordinary like Kiibo." Jataro has made skull-shaped candles before. Junko once did a magazine spread where she talked about what kind of bunny presents she'd like to get and was bombared with tons of gifts from her fans. Someone sent her a stuffed rabbit that's even bigger than she is. Kirumi once taught an elite troupe to juggle for a master who loved circuses. One time when Makoto and Komaru got into a fight, Komaru locked herself in a closet. Aoi always feels super charged after a karoke session, but the more she gets into it the louder she gets until she's just screaming and the microphone is nothing but feedback. This happens every single time. Kirumi has experience with most game genres due to the requests of a past employer. Byakuya goes to a private beach for vacations. A movie was made based on The Bomb Inside Her. The SHSL Impostor his mostly self-taught, putting in effort to study the things they'd need to know to properly impersonate someone. One time, Tsumugi completely misjudged the amount of time she had before a con and couldn't finish her costume in time, so one of her friends had to lend her a hand and save her. One of Tsumugi's cosplay friends lost the ability to distinguish reality from fantasy. Korekiyo's sister's poor health began in childhood. Akane once worked shining shoes. Leon has participated in Obon dances. Rantaro's sisters would always put handmade animal ears on him and he'd get embarrassed and immediately take them off and his sisters would have a fit. A lot of delinquent manga is sacred to the Crazy Diamonds. One time, late at night, Kaede heard a biker gang play a Mexican folk song on their horns as their theme song outside of her house. Rantaro once watched one of his sisters do Snow White at a school drama festival as Dwarf D. There are children at Maki's orphanage who imitate Sayaka's songs and dances. One of the children at Maki's orphanage is not unlike Hajime in that she is uncertain of her future and is jealous of SHSLs. Rantaro once traveled to the Amazon. It did not go well. Kirumi has worked for CEOs and supported startups, but never started one herself. A conspiracy involving the Neverminds once unfolded and the relatives closest to the culprits (victims in original text) were apprehended which caused the security at the castle to be ramped up. Leon didn't want to play baseball, but his coach kept tracking him down to ask him personally. Aoi has broken records in every competition she's ever been in from elementary school to high school. Byakuya picked up daytrading, earned 40 billion yen, then dropped it out of boredom. After being caught, the bigwigs decided that a diploma from Hope's Peak woud sufice in the place of a degree for Kaito to become an astronaut.

[S] Around February of 2011 or 2012, Junko was part of a covert photoshoot. Chiaki is "in talks" about running an official streaming channel. Novoselic is in the process of making an aggressive push into sports and hopes to create more sports opportunities for citizens and one day participate in the olympics.
