Work Text:

The courtyard of Mr. Satan’s mansion exuded opulence, every inch of the space draped in grandeur. Ornate golden and white tablecloths covered rows of long, banquet-style tables, each one packed with culinary delights from around the world—sizzling meats, decadent desserts, and lavish seafood displays that would make any feast a king's table. The air was thick with the aroma of freshly grilled dishes, spiced pastries, and savory appetizers, yet it mingled with the overly loud, bombastic sound of the live marching band that paraded through the open space, heralding the arrival of Mr. Satan and, naturally, his daughter, Videl.

Videl walked into the courtyard, her right arm securely nestled in a sling—one that proudly displayed her determination and victories in the tournament. A testament to her relentless grit and unbreakable spirit. However, instead of being wrapped in the satisfaction of the tournament’s aftermath, Videl's expression carried the weight of mild annoyance. Mr. Satan's larger-than-life personality overshadowed everything, from the celebration to the recognition that Videl felt Gohan deserved more than she did.

The courtyard was packed with guests, all clamoring to shake Mr. Satan's hand, cheer his name, and praise his supposed influence on Videl’s success. Videl winced slightly, her eyes darting between the well-dressed attendees as her father soaked up the adulation, enthusiastically taking credit for her training and her rise in the tournament. But deep down, she knew the truth—Gohan had been her real teacher, the one who taught her how to control her ki, and everything she needed to become a serious contender.

Her father, however, strutted about, chest puffed out, grinning ear to ear, as if it had been his own victory in the tournament. "Isn't she amazing?" he bellowed, hoisting her good arm in the air for the crowd to see. "My girl, the future champion! Thanks to my intense training regimen!"

Videl forced a tight smile, inwardly rolling her eyes. This was supposed to be about Gohan, she thought. He’s the one who saved us from Majin Buu. He deserves all the glory tonight. But the louder the crowd got, the more determined Mr. Satan became in making it about himself—and, by extension, her.

In the midst of the fanfare, her eyes caught a warm, gentle gaze. Standing at a nearby table, surrounded by his friends and family, was Gohan. He smiled softly at her, his hand raised in a gentle wave. His father, Goku, was seated next to him, eating like there was no tomorrow—piles of food disappearing into his mouth at an alarming rate, much to the slight exasperation of Chi-Chi, who sat beside him, tending to Goten while occasionally stealing glances at the chaotic scene. It was a strange but heartwarming sight, the Son family exuding warmth in contrast to the more extravagant, showy nature of Mr. Satan’s event.

Gohan, however, stood out even more than the extravagant decor around him. He was dressed to impress, wearing a sharply tailored black tuxedo with the Capsule Corp logo subtly stitched onto the breast pocket—courtesy of Bulma, no doubt. The tux fit him perfectly, highlighting his broad shoulders and well-built frame. Videl couldn’t help but smirk at the thought of Gohan being coaxed into formalwear by Bulma, no doubt under pressure to look presentable for the grand celebration.

Her eyes lit up, and her mood brightened, no longer feeling weighed down by her father’s antics. Breaking away from her father’s side without a second thought, she made her way toward Gohan, her steps quick and determined.

Gohan's breath caught in his throat as he watched her approach. The elegant, golden dress she wore shimmered in the light, each step causing the fabric to catch the glow of the courtyard lanterns. It was a sleeveless gown, accentuating her toned arms and shoulders, while her back was left exposed, revealing her graceful, yet undeniably strong physique. Her hair, styled into a short, curled bob that framed her face beautifully, adding a touch of soft femininity that caught Gohan completely off guard. He felt his heart skip a beat, utterly mesmerized by how radiant she looked.

As Videl closed the distance between them, she stopped just in front of him, her eyes fluttering playfully as she gazed up at him with a mix of confidence and affection. Gohan could feel his face heat up, a soft blush spreading across his cheeks as he struggled to maintain composure. He cleared his throat, trying to fight off the nervousness that surged through him.

“So," Videl began, her voice carrying a teasing lilt as she leaned in closer, her smirk widening as she brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear, "how do I look?"

Gohan’s breath hitched as his mind scrambled for words. She was so close that he could feel the warmth radiating off her, the faint scent of her perfume filling the space between them. Her question seemed so simple, but to him, it was as if she had asked him to describe the stars.

"You…you look really beautiful, Videl," he finally managed, his voice barely above a whisper but filled with sincerity.

The words hung in the air between them, and for a moment, time seemed to slow. Videl’s smirk softened into a genuine smile as a light blush crept up her own cheeks. She giggled softly, the sound sending a rush of warmth through Gohan's entire body. She looked away for a brief second, clearly touched by his heartfelt response, before looking back up into his eyes.

"Thanks, Gohan," she said, her voice gentler now, her usual bravado replaced with something more vulnerable. For all the strength she possessed, for all the battles she had fought, it was these quiet moments with Gohan that made her feel completely disarmed in the best way possible.

Without another word, Videl lifted her free hand and gently placed it on Gohan’s shoulder, leaning into him slightly. Gohan instinctively responded by reaching for her hand, holding it gently yet firmly, as if reassuring her that he was there for her—now, and always. There was a quiet understanding between them, a bond that had been forged in both battle and affection.

As they stood together, momentarily lost in each other, the noise of the celebration around them seemed to fade into the background. All that mattered in that moment was the two of them, standing side by side, sharing a connection deeper than words could express.

The courtyard buzzed with a mix of excited murmurs and camera flashes as Gohan and Videl basked in the brief tranquility of their moment together. However, the atmosphere shifted when Mr. Satan’s voice echoed like thunder, shattering the peaceful ambiance. His larger-than-life presence bulldozed its way into the scene as he strode over with his exaggerated swagger, his booming laugh sending waves through the crowd.

"There’s my champ!" Mr. Satan declared, thrusting himself between the two young fighters. The moment of closeness between Gohan and Videl abruptly disappeared as the towering figure of Mr. Satan loomed over Gohan. His eyes darted from Gohan’s casual smile to his impeccable tuxedo, before settling on Gohan’s eyes with a hint of disdain. He grunted, displeasure flickering in his expression. He couldn't comprehend how this shy, unassuming teenager had stolen the spotlight — not just as the World Martial Arts Tournament champion but also as the one who defeated the terrifying Majin Buu.

Satan's thoughts raced, trying to reconcile the seemingly ordinary boy in front of him with the world-saving warrior everyone celebrated. His ego bruised, Satan mumbled under his breath, "I still don't get how you won. You ain't no champion material..." He eyed Gohan skeptically, trying to find any weakness, any flaw. But before he could dwell on it longer, the media rushed forward, hungry for more photos and quotes.

As the cameras zeroed in, Mr. Satan plastered on his signature wide grin, the perfect mask to conceal his bubbling insecurity. In a grand gesture, he grabbed Gohan’s wrist, trying to raise it triumphantly for the crowd. However, Gohan’s arm remained stubbornly still, not budging despite Mr. Satan’s exaggerated tugging. The champion's face morphed from confident to panicked as he realized he couldn’t lift Gohan’s arm—no matter how hard he tried.

Sweat beaded down Mr. Satan’s brow as he leaned in, whispering between clenched teeth, "Lift your arm, kid. I’m tryin’ to congratulate you."

It finally dawned on Gohan what was happening. Embarrassed, he quickly raised his arm, allowing Mr. Satan to play out the scene for the cameras. "There he is, folks! My student from Orange Star High! Another champion under my guidance!" Mr. Satan bellowed, releasing a forced laugh while still struggling to maintain his composure.

Gohan’s face lit up with an awkward smile as the cameras flashed, feeling the weight of the attention. He wasn’t used to this level of public display, and his discomfort was palpable. But as Mr. Satan continued to gloat, Gohan's attention was drawn to Videl, who stood a few feet away. Her arms were crossed, and a deep frown tugged at her lips, her posture stiff with irritation. She clearly had enough of her father’s antics.

Videl’s eyes narrowed as Mr. Satan rambled on, making sure to subtly take credit for every one of Gohan’s achievements. "Of course, y'know he learned from the best! It’s no surprise he got far with all the tips I gave him!" Mr. Satan chuckled, though his eyes darted around nervously, as if daring anyone to challenge his claims.

Videl could feel her blood boiling. This wasn't Gohan's celebration anymore—it was just another excuse for her father to steal the limelight, pretending Gohan's accomplishments were somehow a reflection of his own. She clenched her fists, the throbbing in her arm a reminder of her own battles, of how much they had both struggled through the tournament. Yet here her father was, turning everything into a spectacle as usual.

Gohan felt Videl’s frustration and knew something had to be done. In a calm, but firm motion, he gently freed his arm from Mr. Satan’s grasp, stepping forward with a serious expression. For a moment, the ever-respectful Gohan bowed to Mr. Satan, his voice steady as he said, "Thank you for the kind words, Mr. Satan." He then straightened up and turned his attention toward Videl, smiling warmly at her. "But there’s something I need to say."

The crowd hushed, curious about what Gohan would say next. His gaze never wavered from Videl as he spoke with newfound conviction. "If there’s anyone who deserves to be celebrated here, it’s Videl." He gestured to her, his voice unwavering. "She’s one of the most determined and talented martial artists I’ve ever seen. She didn’t need me to become a great fighter—she’s always had that strength inside her."

Videl’s eyes widened, her heart skipping a beat at his words. For the first time, Gohan wasn’t just complimenting her in private. He was standing up for her in front of everyone, giving her the recognition she’d never sought but always deserved. A soft blush crept onto her cheeks as she listened, but she remained firm, touched by his sincerity.

"She pushed me to be better," Gohan continued, his tone earnest. "And I’m proud to have fought alongside her. Her strength and determination are what kept me going." He smiled softly at her, and for a moment, it felt as though it was just the two of them in the courtyard.

The crowd murmured in awe, while Mr. Satan fidgeted uncomfortably, clearly out of his element. Videl, her cheeks flushed and heart pounding, felt a surge of emotion swell inside her. She wasn’t one to sit back and let others give credit, even if it was Gohan. With a loud, defiant stomp, she stepped forward, cutting through the growing whispers.

"Hold on," Videl said, her voice sharp as she glared at her father. "Gohan didn’t just help me train. He’s been protecting Satan City—our city—this whole time, as a hero. While my dad’s been busy with... well, whatever it is he does," she added with a pointed look toward her father, "Gohan’s been the real hero, keeping us safe. He taught me how to fly, how to control my ki. He’s the one who pushed me to get stronger." Her voice softened as she met Gohan’s gaze. "And I’m grateful for it."

Without missing a beat, Videl grabbed Gohan’s hand, sending a collective gasp through the crowd as she lifted herself off the ground, dragging Gohan into the air with her. The two hovered above the onlookers, Gohan chuckling softly at the headstrong girl who always took charge.

As they ascended, Gohan couldn't help but admire Videl’s strength, her pride, and her refusal to let anyone—even her father—dictate her story. It was one of the many reasons he respected her so much.

Below them, Mr. Satan floundered, desperate to regain control of the situation. "Uh, wait, Videl! Get down here, y-young lady I—" Before he could finish his sentence, a firm hand clamped down on his shoulder.

Startled, Mr. Satan turned his head, only to be met with Goku’s bright, easygoing smile. "Hey, Mr. Satan," Goku said with an innocent grin, wrapping an arm around the world champion’s shoulders. "Love the food! Mind telling me where that dish came from?"

Mr. Satan's eyes bulged. He recognized that face, the same face from the Cell Games—the hair, the flying, the unimaginable power. His legs felt weak as he struggled to respond, but the weight of Goku’s arm was grounding, pulling him out of his panic.

"I-I uh... sure," Mr. Satan stammered, his bravado crumbling.

Goku gave a thumbs up to Gohan and Videl, signaling that he would handle the situation, before guiding Mr. Satan away from the cameras and the crowd.

With the stage now theirs, Gohan and Videl flew off together, finding solace in the skies above the extravagant mansion. Away from the noise, the flashing cameras, and the grandstanding, they could finally have a moment to themselves.
The air was cool but gentle, carrying the fragrance of the garden’s blossoms as Gohan and Videl landed softly on the other side of the Satan mansion, away from the noise and chaos of the celebration. They were surrounded by towering trees and beds of vibrant flowers. In the center of this secluded area stood a grand white gazebo, illuminated by the soft glow of the garden lanterns. The sound of water gently trickled from a nearby fountain, birds chirped lazily in the distance, and the fresh scent of grass and earth mixed with the floral perfume carried by the wind. The world felt peaceful, like it was waiting just for them.

Still holding hands, they walked side by side along the marble pathway, Gohan’s grip warm and reassuring. As they approached the gazebo, Gohan couldn’t help but chuckle, a boyish grin spreading across his face as he glanced at Videl.

"It was pretty funny seeing you stand up to your dad like that," he said, his voice light with amusement. "I mean, you didn’t have to say anything, but... I'm glad you did."

Videl let out a small huff, shaking her head. "Yeah, well, maybe I didn’t have to, but I needed to." Her eyes flickered with the fierce determination Gohan had always admired in her. "The celebration was for you, Gohan. You were the champion. You were the one who saved everyone from Buu. But my dad..." She trailed off, her lips pressing into a tight line as she frowned, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "He always has to make it about him. I’m just so tired of it."

Gohan gently squeezed her hand, his expression softening as he stopped walking and turned to face her. "I know," he said quietly. "But it doesn’t matter to me. I don’t care about the recognition or the attention. All that matters is that the world is safe, and everyone we love is okay." He gave her a small, reassuring smile. "Besides, your dad may be a little... over-the-top, but I can tell he cares about you a lot. He just doesn’t always know the best way to show it."

Videl sighed, her shoulders sagging a little as she looked up at Gohan. "I know. It’s just... it’s hard sometimes. Living in his shadow. Always having to be the daughter of the world champion. It’s suffocating."

Without saying a word, Gohan slipped his arm around her waist, pulling her gently into his embrace. His touch was careful, mindful of the arm she had in a sling, but strong enough to make her feel secure. He looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with understanding. "I know exactly what that’s like," he whispered. "Living in the shadow of a legend. My dad... he’s saved the world more times than I can count, but... we don’t have to be defined by them. We’ve already proven we can stand on our own, Videl. We’ve already shown the world what we’re capable of."

As he spoke, he leaned his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the quiet of the night. "We didn’t just defeat Majin Buu," he continued, his voice a soft murmur between them. "We fought together, side by side, against something that seemed impossible. I won’t lie... I had my doubts during the fight. There were moments when I thought I wouldn’t make it. Buu was... terrifying. But seeing you, seeing how hard you fought, even when you were injured, it gave me the strength I needed to push beyond my limits. I unlocked my Mystic form because of you."

Videl’s eyes widened as she listened, her heart pounding in her chest. She had never heard Gohan speak so openly, so vulnerably. Her good arm slid up around his neck, pulling him even closer as she gazed into his warm, honest eyes. He had always been like this—so gentle, so pure-hearted. Despite his incredible power, despite everything he had been through, he was still so kind. So... Gohan.

Her breath caught in her throat as she realized how much she truly admired him, how deeply her feelings had grown for him over these months. When she thought she had lost him during the fight with Buu, the despair had nearly crushed her. But the moment he returned, all that fear and sorrow had melted away, replaced with the overwhelming relief of knowing he was safe, that he was with her. Just like now, Gohan made everything feel... right.

Without another thought, without even realizing what she was doing, Videl rose up on her toes, closing the small distance between them. Her lips pressed against his in a soft, lingering kiss, full of unspoken emotion and everything she couldn’t put into words. She kissed him with the warmth and tenderness she had held back for so long, letting her heart pour into the moment.

Gohan, at first surprised by the sudden gesture, soon responded in kind, his arms tightening around her waist as he kissed her back. It wasn’t the desperate or fiery kiss of passion, but something deeper—an expression of the quiet love that had grown between them, nurtured in the midst of battle and struggle. In that moment, they weren’t the saviors of the world or the children of legends. They were simply a boy and a girl, standing in the stillness of the afternoon, lost in each other.

The world seemed to fall away around them, leaving only the soft sounds of the garden and the steady rhythm of their hearts. Time itself slowed, and for the first time in what felt like forever, they could just be—no expectations, no responsibilities, no shadows to live under. Just them.

As they slowly pulled away from the kiss, Gohan rested his forehead against hers once more, his breath warm against her lips. "Videl," he whispered, his voice low and full of emotion. "I... I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy before."

Videl smiled, her eyes shining as she looked up at him. "Me neither, wonderboy" she whispered back. "I think... I’ve always known… I knew you were the one."

They stood there in the gazebo, wrapped in each other’s arms, as the rest of the world went on without them. For now, nothing else mattered. Not their fathers, not the battles they had fought, not even the future ahead. All that mattered was the here and now, and the love they had found in one another’s arms.

And for the first time in a long time, they allowed themselves to believe that everything was going to be okay.

Notes:

In this AU, Gohan did not only call Buu the "R" word, but he made sure to roll his R's in a very crispy way~

Jokes aside, this is in the same US as my first HanVI fic submission to Dragon Ball Ship Week.
Thank you for reading, hope you enjoy.
