Here's to the Afterlife

Summary:

Peter could try to hold on a little longer but it still wouldn't be enough as his arms give out and the weight of the world comes crashing down on him.

It's ironic you could say, how Peter died a day before he turned sixteen.

Notes:

Alone at the edge of a universe humming a tune
With sparkling crystals souls aglow

A part of thee in the key of what we know to be every part without me
Knows only two can make it light

You'll live forever tonight

Work Text:

Today was a good day.

At least good in Peter's mind, because that doesn't happen all that often.

He woke up and said bye to May, Spider-Manned his way to school and met Ned in the hallway and not one teacher surprised them with a test.

During lunch he had left overs from dinner the night before while listening to MJ and Ned debate the ethics of making a lightsaber, chiming in when necessary.

After school he took the bus home put his stuff away then donned his suit, after having an early dinner since May wouldn't be home until evening, needing to get out, because the only reason today wasn't marked one of the best in a good chunk of time was due to his spider sense numbly thrumming under his skin all day like an undercurrent of nerves before an acadec meet the day of a competition.

The feeling as if it was warning him of an oncoming pedestrian about to bump into him on the corner, or a tube of webbing about to fall off the counter when he's in the process of making extra.

A constant that won't let him just relax, it has to remind him just everytime it starts to fade causing a spike up his spine making him look around expecting something only to see nothing.

So he does what he does best.

Become someone else, Spider-Man, the hero of the city as some call him, a vigilante, or a menace as some say.

He's been breaching over into different districts lately because he can't stop at the edge of Queens and expect no one else to need help beyond.

Since then Peter has met a few other vigilantes, well, Spider-Man met a few other vigilantes, during a bust of a drug ring that he had been working on he ran into who he presumed was Daredevil but since he didn't say a word to Peter and just punched some face in then left he can't be sure, since there is no photo's of the Devil either he couldn't check.

Then a few weeks later he ran into one Jessica Jones scoping out a warehouse where a bunch of gang leaders were meeting up to sell a bunch of shit that was glowing and sending of waves of heat that were so strong that they could both feel it on the roof of the adjacent building.

Peter hasn't found anymore of it after none other than Deadpool showed up and sent a small fucking equivalent of a nuke into it blowing up not only the building and people in it but also all the weird things that were also a kind of explosive it seems as it blew up the whole block including the building Jessica and Peter were on, so you see how well that went.

Deadpool came over and made sure they weren't dead after y'know, re attaching his legs to his body from where they blew off.

Totally normal right?

Yes apparently. Honestly the answer to that should be a hard no but whose Peter to judge.

Peter was okay since, superpowers and all while he and Jessica had a bruise or so but was ultimately fine.

Peter didn't say anything to Deadpool about killing the guys either, because it turns out they were connected to some child trafficking group that had showed up in Brooklyn recently and thats why Deadpool was here, or y'know blowing up the block since the whole place was abandoned after a gas leak awhile back.

The next day he wasn't aloud out because he needed to rest after being blown up, May's words, not his plus he tried to tell her he wasn't the one being blown up this time, though he didn't tell her that last part because then he might not ever be let out, but she wouldn't hear it so instead he took the day off to study up on his exams while looking into the glowy things that the people had the night prior, luckly it wasn't chitauri energy cores like Peter was worried they were.

He did not need a repeat of the Vulture.

No one did.

So long story short Peter's met vigilantes helped out here or there, but at the moment he's swinging around helping out wherever he's needed, not much happens up until he gets to a more desolate part of the city, where it's more common to see no one except the occasional passerby.

And it's here when he feels the faint buzzing thats been there all day spike up his spine sending shivers and a warning of danger and death, for who, Peter doesn't know but he knows he needs to stop it, so downwards he goes.

He lands in a back alley and follows the spike up his spine towards death and destruction for someone he doesn't know but would lay down on a wire for.

He finds out sooner than he'd like just who the warning was for.

Looking into an apartment complex where the spike of his sense is extraordinary, he's never felt his sense be this intense about something before ever and with everything he's been through that says something, he sees absolutely nothing.

Popping open the front doors noiselessly he walks in looking around for something, and seeing nothing in the lobby heads for the stairwell, his sense telling him it's that way while also telling him to leave.

But who is he if he leaves? Just cause he's a bit scared? Well if he was Peter Parker at the moment he would've gone for help but he's Spider-Man and he can tell there's no time.

Maybe that was the first mistake?

Peter's not really sure what's happening he just went to the basement level and found people, loads of them and not tenants but dangerous looking people with guns and of course they spotted him so he had to take them out but in the process someone threw a grenade and since the place was pretty big it just hit the corner Peter was in and Peter himself.

All the people were escaping except for a few that had guns and were shooting at him, a distraction he realized as the other people got away.

Peter took care of the last few people with ease even though his ears were ringing from the grenade and his leg was bleeding profusely from a big mangled spot where the explosion got the better of him, he sprayed some webbing on it but that can only do so much.

Then climbing upstairs and dragging out the people he starts looking for the guys who left.

Which he was able to get some of cause they hadn't made it far enough, he can see that the blast made the building unstable and he needs to get everyone out, he can already see people on the street from the neighboring buildings coming out and watching, asking a nice lady, who came over to make sure Peter was okay when she saw his leg, to call nine one one and stand back from the building.

He went back in. And out, and back in again, helping people that needed it and making sure people who said they could get out by themselves knew what was happening most people did with how loud the grenade had been.

About halfway through the evacuation process Clint Barton shows up to help and Peter hooks up to the comms so they can communicate when needed.

After Clint starts helping with the evacuations Peter goes back to the basement to make sure he got all of the bad guys out since there were alot, checking around to make sure not a soul is there, listening he can hear nobody except the people above him, there's around twenty left in the building.

He checks through their computers to see if anything was left or if they wiped the drives completely, they had, hearing an ominous creak coming from the stairway he moves quickly wanting to help get the last people out before anything happens.

Not quickly enough it seems as the ceiling, or floor if you're above, begins to cave in taking the stairs with it and coming down onto Peters head- or it would've if Peter hadn't caught it and been shoved to his knees, bending under the weight, he held up a building before it just wasn't this heavy.

Clint clicks into the comms frantically asking where the hell Peter is using his real name, Peter hopes he's not around any civilians.

Making sure to tell Clint that he's in the basement and that he needs to quickly get the rest of the people out because Peter can't hold this up much longer.

Which only freaks Clint out more cause apparently it's not common knowledge that Peter can lift this much but Peter can hear him start to climb into the building to get the last of everyone out.

It seems to be getting heavier by the second Peters arms are shaking and he can barely breath right, his ears are ringing so he barely makes out Clint telling him to hold on and that reinforcements are coming and the last of the people are out.

But Peter knows what's happening, he thinks Clint might to.

Peter just wishes he could've had dinner with May one last time instead of by himself, He and Ned never even got to finish deciding if they should ask Mr Stark to help make a lightsaber, and he forgot to ask MJ if she got a haircut at school today, it looked like she had.

So he tells Clint one last thing before his arms give out, he tells Clint to tell May, Ned and MJ to keep living because you only get one chance and while he doesn't regret his, he wishes it were longer.

Clint tells him he will, and Peter could try to hold on a little longer but it still wouldn't be enough as his arms give out and the weight of the world comes crashing down on him and he feels the air leave his lungs he also feels the weight of the world and its expectations leave his shoulders as the light blinks out and everything is dark, and cold.

At least now Peter knows who the warning was for. Himself.

It's ironic you could say, how Peter died a day before he turned sixteen, as he'd been bitten by the spider a week before his fourteenth and Uncle Ben died a day before.

His parents died within the week of his six birthday, and he met Skip during the afterglow of his ninth, at the time he thought that was great, not anymore.

At least now Peter thinks he won't have to see anymore people die.

He fades away to the sounds of fizzing electricity and thumping heartbeats, nothing truly peaceful, that's fair he thinks, I don't deserve it.
