A Fleeting Morning of Bliss

Summary:

Clive and Jill enjoy a quiet morning of cuddling and enjoy time together until eventually they get interrupted.

Work Text:

Clive’s eyes opened as soon as the sun rised. Despite the rays of the early morning sun not piercing through the window much he always woke at dawn. A habit drilled into him when he had been thrown into the imperial frontlines. To disobey orders meant death. It seemed that regardless of the fact that that tumultuous time in his life was a chapter in his past his body still was conditioned to rise at dawn. Even with his best attempts he couldn’t fall back asleep and normally he would walk through the Hideaway and see what needed to be done but this morning was different.

A small sleepy murmur drew his gaze over toward Jill who was still fast asleep beside him. Her arm rested on top of his as she curled further into his warmth. Clive smiled at the sight and gently readjusted in bed before holding his love closer. To think that he could share this moment with Jill and hold the one he cherished most was something Clive had thought impossible. A dream that could never be and yet here it was a reality. His heart fluttered at the thought before starting to race far quicker than any battle had done so. He tried to calm down and as Clive took deep breaths he internally scolded himself for getting so excited that his heart was nearly beating out of his chest. The sound was so loud in his ears that he swore it was audible.

“Mmm,” Jill moved slightly, her gray silver hair slipping down her shoulder as her legs continued to further intertwine with Clive’s.

Clive stopped breathing and remained as stiff as stone praying that he hadn’t just woken up his beloved.

“Good morning,” Jill shifted so her face was in front of Clive’s. “Sleep well.”

“Yes, the best I’ve had in years.” Clive smiled and held Jill close.

“It’s the same for me,” Jill’s face was dusted pink and she rested her head against Clive.

“Did I wake you?”

Jill glanced up. “No, I’ve been awake for a couple of minutes. Force of habit, try as I might, I can't seem to break it.” Her eyes took on a more somber edge to it.

Clive could sense that her mind had been drawn back to a heavier moment in the past with that simple question. Slowly he raised up his hand and brushed away some hair from her face. His fingers tucked the strand of hair behind her ear before his hand rested on the side of her face.

“I share the same habit. Just because we are awake now doesn’t mean we can’t still spend time together like this. We could spend the entire morning like this.”

“I would like that,” Jill smiled then closed the distance between them embracing his lips in a kiss. Clive leaned into the kiss turning it into another before the two of them settled back in bed. Jill rested against him while he slowly traced his fingers up and down her back. Both of them enjoyed the quiet peace of the moment. A rare commodity for them both.

“This is nice,” Jill spoke softly as her hand intertwined with Clive’s.

“It is. Usually by now Gav would come barging in with some sort of urgent job.” Clive cuddled close to his love and started to press kisses to Jill’s shoulder. Jill returned the kisses and ran one of her hands through Clive’s hair. Both of them slipped into the intense emotions of the moment when suddenly the door swung open.

“Clive!” Gav stood there before his eyes widened and he turned around feeling awkward for what he interrupted.

Clive sighed and collapsed back on the bed. “Speak of the devil,” he muttered before propping himself up on his elbows. “What is it, Gav?”

“Otto need you for somethin’. He said it was urgent.” Gav continued to stare at the ground. “Since I found ya too, Jill. Tarja wanted to see ya for a check up.”

“Alright. Thank you, Gav.” Jill responded as she worked to get out of bed.

“Yes, thank you, Gav.” Clive’s voice held an edge of annoyance to it.

“Just doing my job, Well then,” Gav gave a two finger salute, still not looking up then went off.

Clive sighed while he worked to get his boots on. “Never can have a morning alone, can we?”

“We will someday.” Jill walked over and stood in front of her love. Her hands caressed the sides of Clive’s face. “We have work to do now but someday we can simply enjoy the morning together.”

“Yes, someday.” Clive captured Jill’s lips with his and felt a smile tug on his lips. “I should go check with Otto. As for your check up with Tarja,”

“I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m sure everything will be fine.” Jill saw those words help reassure her love as his shoulders relaxed.

“Right. I’ll see you later then,” Clive got up and shared one more kiss with Jill.

“See you then,”

Both of them didn’t want to part but soon their hands slipped apart and they went about their day. Right now other things took priority but soon enough they would be in each other’s arms again. That simple yet happy truth made the smile remain on Clive’s face as he opened the door and was ready to greet whatever life threw at him today.
