Chapter Text
It was just another mission... or, at least it was, until Astrid Hofferson heard those fateful words. Then... then everything changed.
"Second signature in the breach!! Another Category 4!!" Fishlegs cried out, panicking. He was currently sitting in a reinforced chair so that it wouldn't collapse under his weight.
Now, that would've raised some eyebrows anywhere else but not here. Here almost everyone had just as much muscle and/or fat as Fishlegs (if not more). So no, not here.
Currently, his blue eyes were staring intently at the holographic screen, it showed two red dots; the names Razorwing and Berserker attached, one to each marker.
There was only one green, designated Deadly Nadder, and his hands were fidgeting nervously, every now and again they ran through his blond hair.
"Eh. Tha's new." Gobber replied while he scratched his broad chin with his prosthetic hook, (He requested to have one and not a proper robotic limb, no one knows why. Except for Her, but, no one ever mentions Her (not since The Fight), never mind knows where, or how, to find Her. Might be his Viking heritage though.) which made his magnificent, blonde, braided mustache sway a bit.
His blue eyes, too, raked over the information, but they betrayed his usual cheery and blunt attitude with the worry buried deep in them.
Snotlout slammed his fist into a nearby metal surface, his considerable muscles helped him to noticeably dent the metal.
"THAT'S NEW?! THAT'S NEW?!" He bellowed incredulously. His icy blue eyes glared daggers at Gobber's bald head. "That's the best you can do?! My Babe is about to DIE and all you say is THAT'S NEW!!!" A little icon, like a speaker, appeared next to the green dot, unnoticed.
"I AM NOT YOUR BABE and I am NOT ABOUT TO DIE!!" Astrid's furious bellow carried throughout the room effortlessly, the speakers having magnified it, making everyone jump.
"How do you know that?" Snotlout replied, a defensive edge to his voice.
Then realizing just what he'd said he tried to backtrack.
"Uhh, not that you're not the best fighter here but two Kaijus at once isn't something anyone could survive, but, uh, if anyone could survive it'd be you."
He nodded with finality. "Yeah." The last thing seemed to be aimed more at himself as if trying to convince himself that it was the right thing to say.
"Because backup's already arrived." She said, as if it were obvious. The entire room fell silent, every one of them well aware that no backup had been deployed. Everyone could practically hear her eyes narrowing "And we will be having words later."
Snotlout gulped, that tone did not imply that she wanted to talk.
He wasn't smart, but, when it came to predicting whether or not Astrid would whoop his ass, well, experience made him an expert although that had taken almost his entire life.
"Uuhhh, Lassie, we huvnae deployed onie backup." Gobber's voice had a tone to it, like when you're talking to a child or someone who is mentally damaged or just plain crazy. Stormfly's response was not expected.
"Really? Then why don't you explain this?" That was Avery, Astrid's copilot/drift partner. Before anyone could react the holographic screen changed now showing them what Deadly Nadder was seeing... Every. Single. Jaw. Dropped.
There was a black monstrosity, a Jaeger this time, with certain points on it emanating an eerie, almost hellish, light blue glow. Most notably the middle of its chest and down its spine, as well as down the outside of its arms. The thing moved far faster and far more fluidly than even the new MK 6s. It easily took on the Kaiju, designated Berserker, and dodged the few attacks Razorwing threw at it.
If not for the fact that the entire control room devolved into a shouting match and pure pandemonium, everyone would've heard Gobber breathe out one word as they watched the Jaeger brutally destroy their enemies.
"Lass?"
As it stood most of the shouting came from an enraged Marshal Stoic Haddock who yelled at the top of his lungs about how he wanted that Jaeger captured and reverse-engineered.
Astrid refused, simply because the thing had saved her life and because of that, her warrior's honor wouldn't let her touch it. It was a low blow, to insinuate that the Marshal wanted her to break her Viking Honor, but it worked... well.
So Snotlout, Dogsbreath, Snot's drift partner, and The Twins were put in their own two Jaegers and flown out there to deal with the Jaeger that was now being designated as Night Fury, for its paint scheme and the extreme and swift brutality in the way it was fighting.
They were barely outside of arms reach of Night Fury when Snotlout, ever the narcissistic idiot, yelled out.
"Hah! They're hailing us, probably scared out of their minds by yours truly!" Before anyone could stop him, he had accepted the hail and promptly cried out in agony, in perfect sync with Dogsbreath as the Jaeger, Monstrous Nightmare, sank to its knees, clutching at its head.
Seconds later the green dot labeled the same, winked out.
Stoic swore, then ordered a status report.
Deadly Nadder simply turned her head in Monstrous Nightmare's direction, as it was still recording and sending the feedback to Berk.
Monstrous Nightmare was completely still, on its knees, and completely dark. Frozen in a position where it looked like it was clutching at its head in pain.
In other words? Not good.
Night Fury turned to the other Jaeger, the only threat left with Deadly Nadder refusing to fight.
Its right arm changed into some sort of cannon that started to spool up like a jet engine, while it equipped one of two katanas magnetically clamped onto its back.
It seemed to stop, think about it for a bit, then change its mind, then its right hand changed back and retrieved the second sword.
It advanced towards the Zippleback twirling its swords in a casually aggressive manner, making it look all the more menacing, which was probably the point. It lashed out with its right sword, never breaking stride, neatly decapitating Razorwing, having dealt with Berserker at that point.
The Zippleback went to throw a punch but Night Fury slashed, lightning-fast, at the underside of Zipplebacks armpit. That arm slackened as if Zippleback had lost control over it, making it hang limply. Night Fury continued past it, turning and slashing again, an exact mirror to its previous slash, but from behind. It completed its flurry of strikes with a low, wide swipe to the backs of Zipplebacks knees, forcing it to its knees.
Night Fury grabbed it by the scruff of its necks, carried it over to Stormfly, dumped it at her feet, nodded to her, and walked off.
Then it changed mid-stride , body parts shifting around inhumanly. When the transformation finished, it resembled one of those dragons of old and swum away.
