Work Text:
Sam and Colby had been friends for a few months now, hanging out at school and occasionally at each other’s houses. They had bonded over sharing so many interests so when Colby asked if Sam wanted to check out one of his favorite places it was a no-brainer. They finished their day at school and headed to drop their things at Colby’s house. Colby empties his backpack and stuffs it with water and snacks before grabbing his skateboard and yelling to his mom they are going on a walk.
They walk for about 30 minutes before Colby motions to the forest in front of them and grabs Sam's arm to run through it. Sam feels his insides warm at the contact from his friend, he pushes it down and chases after Colby. The boys end up in front of a warehouse bordered by train tracks. The building has a soft gray stone exterior and has graffiti rising to the room that has fans creaking and sunlight hitting the top. Sam shifts his eyes to Colby who is sporting a smile that automatically passes to Sam. The afternoon light making Colby’s eyes glimmer has Sam wishing they could live in this moment forever. He feels as though this may be the best day of his life and they haven’t even explored yet.
Colby leads the way pointing out things he finds interesting, Sam nods along in wonder as gold filters in. Colby sets down his skateboard and backpack before running to a beam that leads to a platform.
“Bet you won't climb to the top!” Colby challenges pulling Sam by his arm again.
“Bro- I’ll get up there, only if you go too,” Sam replies not even questioning Colby as he grips the bottom and pulls himself up using the scaffolding metal to get higher up the beam. He makes it up and Colby follows soon after shifting close enough to Sam that their thighs are touching. He then pulls out his phone and takes a picture of them, Sam looking off in the distance with an expression of awe.
They sit and chat until Colby mentions one last place. Colby climbs down first then guides Sam down grabbing the smaller's hands at the final jump off the base of the beam. Sam trips on the way down ending up chest to chest with the other teenager. He feels Colby gasp in a breath and at once pull away after steadying his friend. Sam immediately apologizes to the other brushing it off.
Colby leads him up to a platform and out a hole that puts them on the roof. Colby is babbling about safe parts to walk on and Sam doesn't listen to a word he says, staring at his friend as the warm light of evening wraps around him. Colby asks if he gets it and Sam nods (he didn’t hear a word Colby said.) Colby carefully steps over the metal attempting to follow the support beam lines making it to the concrete platform holding the lightly spinning fan. He nods to Sam to follow and points the beam. Sam makes it more than 80% then steps directly on the decaying metal, the section collapsing, throwing Sam forward. Colby grabs under his arms and pulls him up to the concrete, Sam collapsing on top of his friend when he feels the tightening in his throat.
Colby notices how scared his friend looks and pulls him closer. This breaks the seal to Sam’s eyes, and he buries his face into his friend's shirt trying to hide it. Colby looks down shocked by the other and rubs his back unsure what to do.
“Sam you're okay I promise it’s scary to fall but you’re okay I caught you please stop crying,” Colby attempts to comfort using the tact of the average teen boy.
Sam sits, gasps a few times rubs his hands over his eyes, and grips Colby again. Colby gingerly wraps his arms back around Sam until he's calm once again. Sam looks up, his now bloodshot eyes meeting Colby’s later looking around at the field. A train goes by and vibrates the building, Colby stands and pulls Sam up with him.
“WHOOOOOO!!” Colby yells muffled by the rattling of the building and the roar of the train. Sam looks in astonishment at the sudden reaction before joining. They screamed and shouted until the train was long gone. They met eyes again faces flushing and smiles melding together. Sam's eyes shifted to Colby’s lips quickly shifting back up to his eyes once more. The pink and orange of the setting sun accentuated the rosy tone of his cheeks. Colby made the leap and wrapped his arm around Sam’s shoulder putting his face in the crook of his neck. When they separated
Sam thought of leaning in, the moment perfect but Colby wasn’t a girl, and he wasn’t gay, so they stood eye to eye until Colby spoke up.
The sun was setting, and Colby’s mom wanted them home, so they had to leave soon. Colby guided Sam on where to stand this time and they made it down without casualty. Colby led the way out of the woods and back to his house. When they arrived back Colby’s mother looked them up and down before shaking her head and seeing the boys covered in leaves and dirt.
The two head back to Colby’s room where Sam is given a hoodie to borrow and waits until he can be picked up. In the waiting time, they joke around planning the next time to go to each other's houses. When Sam is about to be picked up Colby pulls him back.
“So, did you like the warehouse?” Colby asks looping his fingers with Sam’s.
Sam throws his arms around Colby’s shoulders, “Yeah thanks so fucking much for taking me,” Sam answers looking the sincerest Colby had ever seen.
Sam has to be pulled into the car by his parent. They visit the warehouse often after alone together and eventually with their other friends.
