Work Text:

“Please, you must excuse me,” Alastor smiled at Rosie as the streets gor darker for the night, “I cannot help but think I’ve overstayed my welcome.”

Rosie smiled at him, it was a genuine one. Her face wasn’t stitched permanently upwards like his. “Please,” she said, “Its hardly a bother.” She chuckled, gesturing to the sky with her umbrella, “The company’s quite nice on crimson nights like these.”

Then he existed to the street, giving her a warm smile and giving her a gentle smile, one of his few actual smiles. Rosie always had that effect on him. He turned back.

“Well I think that I’ve gotta go,” Alastor said, “And I don’t know why but I need you to promise me you wont cry.” He pushed down whatever sorry emotion was bubbling up in his chest, “‘Cause you’ll be Fine, and so will I.” He didn’t know that, “So, just let the thought of me die.”

“Please let me know” Alastor whispered as the she towered over him, his chain in her unforgiving hands as he knelt at her feet.

She scoffed, “Let those old memories go!” She commanded.

“Feed me to the crows!” He pleaded. He wanted no more of this.

She tightened her grip on him, forcing him to choke on his own air, “Understand that I will find a brand new life…” her voice got quiet after she yelled, “My Golden Second Try.”

Alastor found a glimpse of himself in a pond reflection under the dim light. The water reflected his misery back at him. He was chained, on a leash with no where to go.

He found the man before him had died.

Alastor patted his mother’s head as she sniffled in front of him. “Its alright my dear.” He smiled gently and lifted her face up to face him, “Well I think that I gotta go, and I don’t know why—“ she sobbed harder, “But I need you need to promise me you wont cry!”

She hugged him close and he continued, “‘Cause you’ll be fine, and so will I.” He patted her head once more, drawing her in for a bigger hug, despite hating the touch, “So just let me out of your mind. In the morning you’ll learn I disappeared off into the night so quietly.”

He allowed a tear to drip from his face as he stood up, abandoning her. His heart wretched, “Then your love for me will vanish too.” He smiled sadly and walked off as she cried his name.
