Chapter Text

“Well,” responded Joy, “Gwen’s a vampire, and she’s just going as a regular cowboy. Not a vampire cowboy.” She stopped for a beat or two before adding, “Well, cowgirl is more correct, right? Do people say that?”
“No, ‘cowboy’ has to be gender neutral, remember?” Laika snipped back quickly, “otherwise if you’re non-binary you’re a cowperson and–”
“That makes it sound like you’re a minotaur, not a lone ranger, I remember this conversation now,” Joy interjected with a smile. Something about the way she smiled at Laika made it an ‘interjection’ rather than an ‘interruption’. Even now, that smile would melt her heart like butter.

Notes:

Originally written on the 28th of October 2022.

The earliest concept for Laika was just a short story about the troubles of werewolves choosing costumes to Halloween parties, and this was my concept draft, barely edited from its original version -- you'll notice it starts in the middle of a thought.

Laika's misadventures inevitably snowballed substantially from there to become what it is now, but I think committing to this fragmented, non-sequential, barely connected format is important to the overall structure of the story, and thus I've kept it mostly how it was (and added to it in loose fragments) rather than incorporating it all into a more traditional narrative.

This is what it is: ruff. I hope you can see it -- and her -- for what she is. More to come soon.
