Anakin found he usually had a lot of time to himself, but it just so happened that when he actually wanted that time alone, he was always busy.
Either Obi-Wan needed something done that day or he was helping Qui-Gon with some project.
But Anakin had his own project now so when Qui-Gon asked him for help that day, Anakin had to turn him down.
Because if there was one thing Anakin could do, it was to plan something special for his two favorite people.
“Qui-Gon,” Anakin said a bit out of the blue as they sat around the dinner table. “Would you stay over tonight?”
“You want me to stay over?”
“That’s a little last minute, Anakin,” Obi-Wan said gently.
Anakin shook his head, adamant to make this happen. “We stay over at Qui-Gon’s last minute all the time.”
“I can stay over,” Qui-Gon said. “It might be a little tight in your bed, however,” he chuckled.
“That’s okay though, right?” Anakin asked, placing his fork on his plate.
“It’s fine,” Obi-Wan promised. “We’ll just have to get cozy.” He pointed to Anakin’s plate, a wordless order to eat the vegetables Anakin had left. “Why do you want Qui-Gon to stay over?”
Anakin picked up his fork and gave a small shrug. “No reason. I just thought it would be nice.”
“That’s sweet,” Obi-Wan murmured.
“That’s certainly a word I would use for Anakin,” Qui-Gon agreed.
Anakin was perfectly happy to be sandwiched between both Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. It was probably his favorite position on Earth, actually. One time in therapy, Plo had asked him what comes to mind when he thinks of a comfortable place.
A moment just like this was his answer.
The only problem was that now that he needed to sneak out of bed to hatch the rest of his plan, it was making it rather difficult.
Anakin tried to prop himself up on his elbow to see the time, but was stopped by a heavy arm that was wrapped around his waist.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Qui-Gon whispered.
“I was just trying to see what time it was,” Anakin replied quietly. He flipped over so he was facing Qui-Gon and got back under the covers.
“Why do you need to know?” Qui-Gon asked teasingly.
“I just wanted to know,” Anakin mumbled and wondered how he was going to sneak out now.
“Go back to sleep, little one,” Qui-Gon murmured. “It’s too early to get out of bed.”
“Yes, Sir,” Anakin yawned. After all, it was his favorite place.
“Now where are you going?” Qui-Gon asked when Anakin had finally decided that he needed to get out of bed. His eyes were still closed and his voice was a little hoarse.
“I just have to pee,” Anakin whispered, doing his best not to wake up Obi-Wan. It wasn’t something he was too worried about, however, since Obi-Wan tended to sleep well when the three of them slept together.
Qui-Gon removed his arm from Anakin’s waist and made a little more room for him. “Now would be a good time for some training pants,” he teased.
“Daddy,” Anakin frowned and scooted down the bed towards the end. He padded quietly to the en suite bathroom and used the toilet like he said he was going to, but he took his time doing it.
Once he was sure to take a few extra minutes, he peeked out the door and from what he could tell, they were both sleeping. Tiptoeing from the bathroom, he crept out of the bedroom and went into the kitchen. Artoo chirped, stretching his legs out as he came up to Anakin asking for pets.
“We have to be very quiet,” Anakin whispered to Artoo. “We can’t wake anyone up.”
Artoo jumped onto a stool at the end of the island and stared at Anakin before meowing again.
“It’s a little early for your breakfast,” Anakin said, opening a cupboard and getting out a mixing bowl. He got out the rest of the ingredients he needed, Artoo watching him the entire time.
“Chocolate chips or no chocolate chips?” Anakin asked Artoo. “What am I thinking?” he said, laughing at his own joke. “That’s not even a question.” He dumped some chocolate chips into the batter and then added a few more for good measure.
He did his best to copy Qui-Gon’s pancake recipe, only making a bit of a mess in the kitchen that he knew he’d have to clean up, but that was not his primary concern at the moment.
Once the pancakes were done, he piled some high on a plate and soaked them in syrup. He placed the plate on a tray, adding all the required utensils and the mugs: one filled with tea and the other two with coffee. And then he added the cards he had made.
Very very carefully, he tiptoed back to the bedroom where, to his utter disappointment, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were awake and talking quietly among themselves.
“You’re not supposed to be awake,” Anakin frowned.
“Then don’t make quite so much noise in the kitchen,” Obi-Wan chuckled. He sat up in bed and patted the spot between him and Qui-Gon.
“What did you bring us, little one?” Qui-Gon asked.
“Tea for Sir,” Anakin said simply and set the tray on the nightstand next to Qui-Gon. He handed the cup to Qui-Gon. “Coffee for Daddy.” He held the mug out for Obi-Wan to take.
“And I made us pancakes,” Anakin said simply, pointing to the plate on the tray. He crawled over Qui-Gon and settled back in his spot between his Daddy and Sir.
“Breakfast in bed?” Obi-Wan murmured, pressing a kiss to Anakin’s temple. “What’s the occasion?”
Anakin gave a small shrug and looked as innocent as possible. “It’s Valentine’s Day on Wednesday. I wanted to do something nice for you.” He leaned over Qui-Gon and pointed to the tray. “Can you hand me those?”
“What do you say?” Qui-Gon corrected.
“Please,” Anakin said sweetly and held out his hand where Qui-Gon handed him the two envelopes.
“This one is for Daddy,” Anakin said, placing it on Obi-Wan’s lap. “And this one is for… well, other Daddy,” he laughed.
Obi-Wan chuckled and set his coffee mug aside. He picked up the envelope and carefully tore open the flap to remove the card Anakin had made.
“If I had planned this out a little more than a couple days before, I would have gotten an actual card online, but they don’t really make standard Valentine’s Day cards for more than one person,” Anakin explained hastily at his handmade card.
“No, I love this,” Obi-Wan murmured over the sound of Qui-Gon tearing open his envelope.
“Little one,” Qui-Gon said quietly. “This is very sweet. Thank you.” He ran a finger over the colored pencil drawing of three otters. “You drew this?”
“Yep,” Anakin said proudly. “It took a little bit to get it right. And then I had to draw it twice!”
“Well, it’s perfect,” Obi-Wan promised. “Thank you, sweetheart.”
“You’re welcome, Daddy,” Anakin blushed.
“I should make it your homework to learn how to tie a tie,” Obi-Wan teased as he tightened the knot around Anakin’s neck.
“But I like it when you tie it for me,” Anakin said stoutly. He looked in the mirror and straightened out his shirt. “Do I look okay?”
“You look very handsome,” Qui-Gon promised.
“Where are we going?” Anakin asked for the thousandth time since Obi-Wan had told him that they were going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day.
“If you keep asking, you’re going to dinner with a sore backside,” Obi-Wan warned.
Anakin wrinkled his nose and sat on the bed next to Qui-Gon while Obi-Wan finished tying his own tie. “I never get to know what you two plan.”
“No, you don’t,” Qui-Gon replied. “And you don’t need to know.”
“We’re going out to dinner as the three of us… on Valentine’s Day,” Anakin said slowly. “Is that going to look… weird?”
Obi-Wan gave a small shrug. “Who cares what other people think? We’re happy.”
“Yeah,” Anakin agreed, a smile spreading on his face.
“I will have the duck and he will have the salmon,” Obi-Wan said, handing back two menus to the waiter who was already holding Qui-Gon’s menu after he had given his order.
The waiter tucked the menus away and turned to leave, the three of them alone once again and surrounded by tables of only couples.
Anakin gazed around absentmindedly, wondering what the other couples were talking about or if this was their first date or hundredth date.
“What are you thinking about?” Obi-Wan asked gently, giving Anakin a small nudge under the table.
Anakin shrugged and looked down at his lap. “Do you ever wish that we could be ourselves outside of the house?”
“We are being ourselves outside of the house,” Qui-Gon offered.
“Yeah,” Anakin agreed. “It’s just that… no one else is like us.” He looked around the room again at all the couples.
Obi-Wan looked at Qui-Gon with a meaningful expression that Anakin couldn’t quite interpret.
“What?” Anakin asked flatly, a frown on his face.
“Nothing for you to worry about right now,” Obi-Wan comforted.
“I never get to know,” Anakin pouted.
“That’s because it’s a conversation for another time,” Obi-Wan said softly. “Right now, I just want you to enjoy dinner with your Daddies.” He pressed a kiss to Anakin’s temple.
“Yes, Daddy,” Anakin whispered, more than happy to have permission to enjoy himself in the moment.
Anakin’s head was in Obi-Wan’s lap, his legs draped over Qui-Gon’s legs, as they watched a movie in Qui-Gon’s living room.
“Daddy,” Anakin whispered.
“Hm?” Obi-Wan hummed as Qui-Gon looked too.
“What is it, Anakin?”
“Are we staying over tonight?” Anakin asked sweetly.
“You couldn’t tell when I had you change into your pajamas?” Obi-Wan chuckled.
“Just wanted to make sure,” Anakin said with a yawn.
“Maybe it’s time for bed,” Obi-Wan murmured.
“No!” Anakin laughed loudly.
“Little boys have little boy bedtimes,” Qui-Gon teased.
“I’m not little right now,” Anakin said, settling his head back into Obi-Wan’s lap.
“I think you’re always little,” Obi-Wan said with a small laugh, running his hand through Anakin’s hair.
Anakin clicked his tongue and looked up at Obi-Wan. “Daddy,” he admonished.
“Bedtime,” Qui-Gon said definitively, giving Anakin’s leg a pat before turning off the TV.
“Daddy!” Anakin whined and rolled onto his stomach.
“Come on, sweetheart,” Obi-Wan chuckled and gave Anakin’s backside a few firm smacks.
“I get to be in the middle though, right?” Anakin sighed and very reluctantly sat up.
“Where else would you be?” Obi-Wan asked with a smile.
“Daddy,” Anakin whispered into the darkness after Obi-Wan had gotten under the covers.
“Yes, Anakin?” Obi-Wan murmured.
“What’s the conversation for another time?” Anakin asked.
Qui-Gon laughed softly on the other side of Anakn. “How did I know you would be asking about that sooner rather than later?”
Anakin turned his head, trying to pick out Qui-Gon’s features in the dark. “I just want to know.”
“Anakin,” Obi-Wan started slowly. “Does it bother you that you have two Daddies?”
“Wha-” Anakin balked. “No!”
“I didn’t think so,” Obi-Wan said, running a hand through Anakin’s hair. “Then there’s nothing at all for you to feel any shame about.”
Anakin drew in a deep breath. “I’m not ashamed,” he said, but as he said it, he worried that that was actually true – maybe he did feel a little shame about being different from everyone else.
“It’s just weird that everything is made for two people,” Anakin started. “And for straight couples,” he added with a snort.
“I think we’re far from straight,” Obi-Wan chuckled and Qui-Gon laughed too.
“We are ourselves, little one,” Qui-Gon murmured. “We go out as Daddy and Little Ani sometimes.”
“Yeah,” Anakin said under his breath.
“There’s nothing wrong about what we do,” Obi-Wan comforted.
“Who else would color with me?” Qui-Gon teased lightly.
“Daddy!” Anakin laughed.
“And who else would put up with being the middle spoon?” Obi-Wan mused.
“I like being the middle spoon,” Anakin said quietly.
“I know.” Obi-Wan kissed Anakin’s cheek.
“Are you okay being Daddy and Daddy?” Anakin asked, snuggling close to Obi-Wan.
“Yes,” Obi-Wan replied softly. “Qui-Gon and I have talked about it.”
“Do you want to talk about it more with us?” Qui-Gon asked.
Anakin didn’t actually know and his mind was slowly going blank. His Daddies had that effect on him. “Do you get jealous?” was the first question that popped into his head.
“No,” Obi-Wan promised. “I like that there’s someone else around to look after you. Especially someone I trust as much as Qui-Gon. And he gives you things that I can’t.”
“Like being little?” Anakin asked.
“Yes,” Qui-Gon whispered.
“What else?”
“Anything involving any kind of mess,” Qui-Gon teased at Obi-Wan’s expense.
“Daddy doesn’t like mess,” Anakin laughed.
“No, he doesn’t,” Qui-Gon chuckled.
“Tsk.” Obi-Wan clicked his tongue. “I am still here.”
“Daddy is also a brat,” Anakin said.
“Anakin,” Obi-Wan warned as Qui-Gon laughed.
“He can be,” Qui-Gon said. “I should know.”
“Do I have to be the adult here and tell you two to knock it off?” Obi-Wan mused and Anakin could practically hear the eyebrow Obi-Wan was raising.
“No, Daddy,” Anakin said obediently.
“The world might not be made for us, but we are made for us,” Qui-Gon said in a comforting voice.
“I like that,” Anakin whispered.
“I couldn’t have said it better myself,” Obi-Wan murmured. “And now it really is time for bed,” he said, tickling Anakin’s side.
“Daddy!” Anakin laughed loudly.
Obi-Wan let Anakin’s laughter die down, petting his hair. “Do you want to talk about it more?”
Anakin shook his head. “No, Daddy.”
“Obi-Wan and I talked about a lot when we first started,” Qui-Gon said. “None of that means that you can’t be included in future conversations.”
“No,” Anakin said. “I like the way things are.”
“As your Daddies?” Obi-Wan asked.
“Yeah.” Anakin sighed and snuggled in under the covers even further. “I do what you tell me.”
“Sometimes,” Qui-Gon teased.
“You wouldn’t like it if I was good all the time,” Anakin sassed.
“You’re always good, baby,” Obi-Wan said. “You’re just also sometimes very naughty.”
Anakin huffed a small laugh and rolled to his back. “I love you. Both of you.”
“I love you too, sweetheart,” Obi-Wan said, nuzzling his nose into Anakin’s cheek. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
“Happy Valentine’s Day, little one,” Qui-Gon murmured.
“Happy Valentine’s Day to my Daddies,” Anakin mumbled with a big yawn.
