Work Header

In sickness and in Health

Summary:

Jack Morrison was the Strike-Commander at Overwatch. He was always busy with work and hardly got any time to relax or take a break. Most of his time was spent in his office dealing with paperwork or attending meetings. This created a strain on his relationship with his husband, who felt neglected due to Jack's dedication to his job. Unfortunately, on the day when the United Nations was scheduled to visit Overwatch, Jack fell ill. But Jack couldn't afford to take a day off, given the importance of the visit so he does what any Strike-Commander would do. He hides his sickness from everyone and passes out in front of the UN, only to get an earful from his husband and nurse.

Notes:

Super excited to write another Reaper76 one-shot, I haven't done one pre-fall of Overwatch so thought I'd take my stab at it. What better way to do so than with a sick fic!?

I haven't written this much in so long, it hurt my arm. So I will be taking a small break. The next upload will be You can Bet on It on Saturday.

Work Text:

As soon as Jack opened his eyes, he knew something was wrong; his body hurt everywhere, and his head was pounding. The blonde slipped from his husband's grip, freezing as Gabriel groaned and then rolled over, pulling their pillow over his head. Sighing, Jack tip-toed into the bathroom, flicking on the light, and winced, glancing back toward the darkened bedroom. The blonde pulled the thermometer out of the medicine cabinet, placing it in his ear. After the device beeped softly, Jack glanced at the small screen, feeling his heart drop to his stomach. 100.0. The blonde cursed under his breath, quickly scooping up whatever cold medicine they had and taking a large swig before quickly placing it back in the cabinet. After Jack jumped into the shower and got dressed, Gabriel was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding a cup in his hands. "I made you some coffee; I thought you'd like some since the night the both of us had." He said it with a soft smile.

"Thanks, but I can have Ana make me some when I get into the office," Jack said, grabbing his holopad.

"You're going in?" Gabriel asked.

Jack didn't want to meet his husband's eyes. "Yeah, apparently the UN is coming in to check on the progress of our work." The blonde answered.

Gabriel pushed himself off the bed. "You promised you'd take me out." He stated.

"Afterward, promise. It'll only take a few hours." The blonde said,

"Don't bother; I'll go out with Cass and Rein. Have a good meeting," Gabriel said, brushing past him and going into the bathroom.

The blonde knew Gabriel would be upset; it's a no-brainer that their marriage was on the mend. The Latino has expressed multiple times that he felt Jack loved his job more than him, and Jack would argue that he was wrong. That only ended in a screaming match and Gabriel drinking with Cassidy while Jack spent the night with Ana. Their friends have tried many different times to sit them down and talk to one another, but it was no use; they always ended up in separate beds. Half of Jack just wanted to call it off, just leave Gabriel, and rip the bandage off. They both knew it was going to happen sooner or later anyway, but the other screamed at him, saying he was being stupid. Gabriel was still trying and putting up with the blonde, even at the expense of his liver and job. This was the reason why the UN was coming today, to talk to Jack about Gabriel.

Jack punched in his code, quickly dashing into his office before Ana had a chance to stop him at the door. Shortly afterward, the older sniper walked into the large office, looking up from the stack of papers she was reading. The older woman's smile melted into a frown. "You're not supposed to be here." She stated.

"UN is coming; I have to be here, Ana," Jack argued.

Ana made a noise in the back of her throat, putting a hand on her hip. "No, you put me in charge; I can talk to the UN just as well as you can." The sniper growled.

"Just tell me what the meeting is about; the faster I deal with them, the faster I can go home." The blonde said this while reaching for the stack of papers.

"You need to be home now with your husband, who is already spread thin on patience with you," Ana stated, pulling them away.

"He'll get over it; he always does," Jack commented, earning a smack from the other woman.

"What are you going to do when he doesn't?" She demanded. "You think he'll just go back to being your best friend? No, Gabriel will leave Overwatch." She stated.

"I promised him after the meeting that I'd be his for a month. Please, Ana, just tell me." The blonde begged.

"You are on a thin line, Jack, and the ground around you is going to crumble. There will be nobody to blame but yourself." She sighed, handing the papers over.

Jack walked around the office, memorizing the paperwork, when a wave of dizziness hit him, causing the blonde to stumble slightly. Ana quickly wrapped an arm around Jack's waist, steadying him until the wave passed and watching him for a few moments.

"Should I call Gabe?" She whispered.

Jack shook his head as guilt bubbled in his chest. "No, he's already mad at me. I'm fine; I just stepped wrong." The blonde said,

"I'm sure he'll want to know you aren't feeling well, mad or not," Ana stated.

Shaking his head, Jack spoke again. "I feel fine; I just stepped wrong." The blonde repeated.

Ana nodded as Jack's computer behind them glowed. Jack glanced back at the computer, sighing. "Let's not keep the UN waiting." He trailed off.

The walk to the airway seemed longer than normal; Jack's vision blurred slightly as they walked, using the wall as support as they continued. Entering the loud room only hurt the blonde's head even worse, as the luminescent light burned his eyes. Jack chewed on the inside of his cheek as a large jet landed in front of him. Shortly afterward, the door opened, revealing a small stairway. An older gentleman dressed in a too-tight tux and pants slowly walked down the stairs, waiting at the bottom step as he scanned the airway.

"Sir, a pleasure as always." Jack greeted him while holding out his hand.

"Where is the commander?" He questioned, his eyes narrowing at the blonde.

Swallowing thickly, the blonde dropped his hand quickly. "He's on a mission, sir; he sends his regards." Jack lied.

"Convenet, do make sure he does it right. I don't want any rouge agents going wild." He demanded, brushing past Jack.

Inhaling sharply, the blonde watched the man walk through the metal doors. "Of course, sir," Jack answered, biting down on his tongue. Following behind the male and Ana.

They walked around the base; the UN would point out things that Jack needed to fix, and the blonde would have Ana write them down for later. As they walked, Jack began feeling even more dizzy. They made it to the cafeteria before everything started spinning, and the walls around him started getting darker. He heard Ana shout something before hitting the ground hard, and everything went black.

When Jack woke up, beeping echoed around him. The blonde tried to sit up, but a strong hand held him down. He could hear someone beside him speaking, but it was too mumbled for him to make anything out. The blonde's eyes slowly moved to the side of him, noticing Angeal was speaking lowly to someone else who was shouting now, and tears were streaming down their faces. Ana came into view a few moments later, whispering something to the other figure before leaving the room. The blonde medic glanced back toward Jack, nodding, before following behind the older sniper.

The figure paced around the room, muttering in another language while pinching the bridge of his nose. A few minutes passed before the mysterious figure sat down next to the bed, setting his head down on the gurney. "G-G-Gabe?" Jack called, lifting his head.

A hand took Jack's, bringing them to their lips. "Estoy, aquí amor."

"What happened?" Jack groaned, bringing his other hand to his head and finding a bandage.

"You fell... Ana brought you to Angela to find out you had a fever." The Latino explained.

"W-W-Was the UN upset?" The blonde asked.

The male shook his head, ducking it underneath his arm. "No se te ocurre otra cosa que no sea trabajar?" He muttered.

Jack winced; the blonde knew Gabriel was pissed when he dipped into Spanish. The blonde sighed, opening his mouth to speak again. "How long was I out?" He tried again.

"Three fucking days... Why didn't you tell me?" Gabriel demanded.

"Our relationship is on the rocks, Gabe; I didn't want you to think I was trying to use me being sick as a tack to keep you around," Jack admitted.

Gabriel made a noise in the back of his throat that scared Jack, fully expecting the man to leave him right there. The Latino let go of the blonde's hand, pushing himself out of the chair and towering over Jack. "Que te jodan por pensar eso. maldito idiota!" He shouted.

Angela was back in the room, followed by Reinhardt. "How could you not fucking tell me, Jack? I'm your fucking husband!" Gabriel shouted, causing the others to flinch. Angela set a hand on the other's shoulder, only to be shoved away. Angela went to grab the Latino, only for the German to set a hand on her shoulder, lean forward, and whisper something in her ear. "Do I mean that little to you!? That you feel like you have to hide being sick because I can't handle the UN?" He continued, tears pricking the corners of his eyes.

Angela helped the blonde sit up, and the blonde stared at his husband. "N-N-No," Jack stammered.

The older male brought his hands to his face, cursing into his hands. Before running them down his face. "You fucking scared me," Gabriel stated. "Angela said you had a concussion." He added.

Jack ignored the comment, snorting painfully. "Gabriel Reyes scared?" Jack commented with a painful smirk.

Gabriel shook his head, chewing on his bottom lip. Sauntering back toward the bed, he then sat down. "Yeah, Gabriel Reyes is scared." Gabriel chuckled.

The blonde set a hand on the other male's. "I'm sorry, I'm a jerk," Jack whispered. "You know I love you more than Overwatch, right?" He added.

"Por supuesto que conozco a ese idiota." Gabriel chuckled, nodding his head. "Yeah, you are... But I'm the idiot for loving you and not wanting to lose you." Gabriel added, kissing the blonde's knuckles.

"Promise, I'll take you to that favorite ice cream shop and listen to you rant about different fabrics or how you want to go to the Bahamas but hate the snow, so we never will." Jack listed.

Gabriel chuckled, bringing Jack's gloved hand to his forehead. "Let's get you better first," he muttered.

"You look horrible; have you been sleeping?" Jack asked, gently using his other hand to stroke the male's cheek.

"No, he hasn't. He's been here for three days." Angela piped in, earning a glare from the Blackwatch commander.

The blonde's eyes flicked toward the blonde medic, who stuck her tongue at the glaring male, then back toward the Latino. "You need sleep, Gabe." Jack sighed.

"I need you." The man countered.

"I'll be here; please go home and sleep. I'll have Angela and Ana watching me." Jack stated.

Gabriel took Jack's hand, kissing the black ring on his hand. "Never, in sickness and in health, remember." He grinned.

"We can't do any of the things you love if you're sick too." The blonde pointed it out.

Reinhardt chuckled softly, shooing the blonde woman out of the room. "No, which means you can take care of me next. Good way to keep you from your job." The older male said:

Jack glared at the other. "Don't joke about that; you have a terrible immune system. One cold could kill you." He said.

The Blackwatch commander snorted and rolled his eyes. "I'd be fine; I'm big, mean Gabriel Reyes of Blackwatch, remember?" He replied.

"You and I both know how whiny you are when you're sick." Jack laughed.

"Only with you. I have a reputation to withhold." The Latino stated.

"Okay, but Cassidy and Genji need you, and who would Reinhardt spare?" Jack argued.

Gabriel thought to himself for a moment before chuckling at whatever thought he had. "The kids have you, and Ana would keep Reinhardt in shape." He responded.

Jack barked out a laugh. "Are you telling me you're scared of Ana?" He quizzed.

"There are only two people I am scared of, Ana and my abuela." The Blackwatch Commander stated.

Jack made a face. "What about me?" the blonde pouted.

Gabriel ran a hand through Jack's hair. "You're a marshmallow... I'm the pitbull, and you are more of a Chihuahua." He teased.

Jack gently slapped Gabriel's shoulder. "Rude." He muttered.

"You love me," Gabriel stated confidently.

"I do; I'm sorry." He apologized once more.

"Already forgiven," Gabriel whispered, leaning forward and kissing the blonde slowly.
