Chapter Text
I wasn't expecting this to happen. Of all the awful, horrific, indescribable horrors I had seen, watching him die in front of me had to be the worst…was supposed to be the worst,The mission was supposed to be simple. An in and out extraction with medical assistance standing by. That's why I was here, the medic. Now watching as He shot down my men, the gun now pointed at my forehead as I rested on my knees in front of Him, unable to bring myself to look up and see the face of the man I loved. The Traitor.
“How could you?” I whispered quietly, expecting to hear the gunshot that ended my life in place of an answer.
“We are fighting on the wrong side. That's how.” He murmurs gruffly, three piercing shots ringing out across the silent battlefield, a burning pain making its way through my stomach, like fire erupting underneath my skin. I could feel the warmth of my blood washing over my stomach from the three bullet wounds that had been given to me by His cold steel.
“I….S….” I gasp quietly, a rushing sound filling my ears as I finally lift my eyes to meet his, the familiar blue holding a coldness I had never seen in him before. His lips were moving but I couldn't make out what he was saying, the object making the rushing sound making itself known as a helicopter over our position. I feel myself being lowered to the ground as dust fills the space.
“I’m sorry dear.” I hear before the slash of a steel blade flits across my throat and everything fades into a world of sweet bliss as my eyes close slowly.

My eyes fly open with a gasp tumbling from my lips as I hear voices coming from my headset, almost obscured by the roar of the copters rotors above my head, groaning softly as I slowly pull myself upright and rubbing the sleep out of my eyes as I twist my stiff neck from side to side to try and loosen the stiff muscles.
“Can you repeat that? Sorry.” I ask the pilot softly as I glance out the window, confused at the sunlight rising over the mountains.
“We’ll be touching down in two, Sunshine.” There it was. Sunshine. The moniker I had coined in my time during my training due to how…optimistic my attitude was to my fellow field agents. Now, I was a medic and that title held a strange respect through the soldiers I had tended to. My captain actually signed off on the paperwork to allow me to go around as Doc Sunshine, much to my chagrin.
“Awesome. Thank you. Smooth flying by the way. Fell right to sleep.” I chuckled softly as the base suddenly appeared on the hillside. I stay silent to let the pilot do his work as we slowly lower into the base and the reason I came comes into view. Captain Price of the 141. A strange man, he reminded me of a Quokka, especially the way he smiled at me as I disembarked off of the copter, my bag in hand.
“Doctor Lennox, it's a pleasure to finally meet you. I've heard only good things from your captain.” His voice was warm and his hand completely envelopes mine as we exchange formal handshakes.
“Thank you Captain, Please, call me Emilia and may I say it’s such an honour to be chosen by you, I know it must've been difficult narrowing down the many, many candidates.” I returned the sentiment as we made our way into the base which seemed surprisingly quiet given that most sergeants and members in charge loved to drill the rookies at sunrise. I wasn’t expecting a reply to my thanks so his chuckle made me slightly nervous.
“Actually, you were the one I wanted all along. It was your captain. I had to fight in order to sign you onto the team.” His comments didn't surprise me in the slightest, my old captain even attempting blackmail to try and keep me on his team.
“Regardless, thank you. It is my understanding that the 141 hasn't had a proper physician in a while?” I ask curiously, hoping to know a little more about the current position before I was thrown into work immediately and completely in the dark.
“Yes, unfortunately our last Doctor was a uh… patch ‘em up and send ‘em out immediately. Not exactly the uh…most beneficial to the health of our soldiers.” I watch him closely out the corners of my eyes as he rubs the back of his neck, the flap of his bucket hat rubbing against the back of his hand as he does so.
“I know the type unfortunately. Don’t worry captain. I’ll see to it that your boys get the treatment they need.” I wasn't surprised by the conviction in my voice but he certainly seemed to be as he stopped walking to stare at me, a strange emotion in his eyes as I stopped too, both of us standing in the middle of the empty hallway.
“I can see why they call you Sunshine.” He chuckled before walking to my side, hishand grazing the small of my back as he guides me into a large office room that seemed to be devoid of any kind of character and charm, a small room with a wooden desk and chair, a bookcase and a large filing cabinet and a long sofa bed on the far wall.
“Your new stomping grounds. I’ll leave you to get settled before I take you to meet the other men. Oh and a word of warning. They can be a little… untrusting to newcomers. Especially the lieutenant so i'll apologise in advance.” Price says as he raps his knuckles on the doorway before turning and walking down the hallway, leaving me in the middle of the room with my thoughts. This lieutenant. I had read about him in the files given to me by my captain, no picture like the others and more than half of the information blacked out. ‘Need to know the basis.’ I was told when I asked about it. I was…curious for sure, but I wouldn't let my curiosity ruin the job I was supposed to do here.

It wasn’t long in the room unpacking until there was a loud knock on the door and it swung open to reveal a taller man dressed in blue jeans and a green shirt leaning against the doorway, my eyes trailing up to meet his baby blue eyes and even more strangely the mohawk on his head.
“Are you the Doc?” His accent was strange but not a hard one to place.
“That I am, you must be Sergeant MacTavish?” I smile brightly as I stretch my hand out to shake his which he eagerly accepts, pushing off the doorway with a grin to match mine.
“Call me Johnny. Price sent me to come and fetch ya to introduce ya to the rest 'o the team.” He smirks as he pulls my hand to the crook of my arm and begins to literally drag me alongside him, one step for him was worth two of mine given I was 5 '3 and he was…significantly taller.
“Oh, well thank you. It's nice to meet you. Johnny.” I feel his grip tighten on my hand slightly before he relaxes completely to allow me to pull my hand from his arm, walking alongside each other.
“Cap told us about your arrival a few days ago. Wondered why it took ‘im so long, now I know why. He never mentioned you were a looker.” He smirks which causes a light blush to form on my pale cheeks, my freckles showing more significantly now.
“Well, uh. Th…Thanks.” I stammer nervously, clearing my throat and glancing at him out of the corners of my eyes. “You’re not so bad yourself.” I return and to my pleasure a similar blush forms on his cheeks as he drags his hands through his mohawk.
“You’re going to be trouble, you are. We’ll get along like a house on fire.” He smirks as he pushes open a door to our left and ushers me in. The first thing I saw was the large masked figure leaning against the bottom of the medical bed, dressed in black sweatpants and a black sweatshirt, his entire head save for his eyes hidden by a balaclava. That must be the Lieutenant Captain Price warned me about and my assumptions were confirmed as Price steps forward, his hands shoved into his Khaki pants.
“Lads, this is Doctor Lennox, Callsign Sunshine. She's here to take care of us.” He says which pulls my attention away from the intense stare of the Lieutenant to the other man in the room, a darker skinned man dressed in grey.
“Hey, I’m Kyle, everyone knows me as Gaz.” He introduces with another handshake, god my hand will be aching by the end of the night.
“You know Soap,” Price gestures to Johnny who moves past to sit on the edge of the desk at the end of the room. “And this is Lieutenant Ghost.” Price continues, gesturing to the taller masked man who simply nods in my direction.
“Thank you all for accepting me into your team, I look forward to working alongside you all.” I say warmly, my usual smile never fading as I look around the men in the room, Men I would soon call brothers in a place I would soon call home.

It didn't take long for the men to warm up to me, all save for the Lieutenant who seemed to avoid my office as much as possible. I had private meetings with all of the task force to discuss their care and I was shocked to find that they hadn't even received basic tests. Soap had to go for a hearing test given his explosive proclivities. Gaz showed signs of anaemia so he had to get bloods tested, Price had to get checked for high blood pressure and given his job was to look after these men, who I had heard were a handful, it was rather high. The Lieutenant seemed to avoid any kind of interaction with me, leaving the room whenever I entered, avoiding conversation with excuses of training and even once going as far as to shove a rookie into me so he could make his leave. This time it was Price forcing him to come and see me in my office. Hunched over some papers as the knock sounds on the door, I glance up to see the Lieutenant pushing his way into the room.
“Ah, lieutenant. Thank you. I’ll keep this quick.” I say softly, setting aside the paperwork I had been working on and giving him my full attention. He was dressed in black once again, his usual black balaclava covering his face and hair. I had asked soap about it once in passing and he assured me that it wasn’t anything unusual for the Lt as he called him.
“I have rookies to train.” He murmurs from his position by the door, leaning against the wall beside it.
“I am aware. Like I said, I'd make this quick.” I say softly, hearing him mumble under his breath something I didn't quite catch.
“Your file didn't give me much to work with but I have to ask, how are you?” I smiled softly, gesturing to the seat across from my desk but I knew he wouldn't take it.
“Fine.” He grumbles and oddly a shiver runs down my spine. He wasn't much for words but the words he did say were enough to send my mind spiralling…NO, stay professional.
“Alright then, um, I think that's all for now. See, I said i’d make it quick.” I chuckle, attempting to clear the tense air in the room but he does that on his own, the door swinging shut before i could even realise he had left and i was alone once more.
“This is going to be an experience for sure.” I murmur to myself, allowing my sunshine personality to slide into my exhausted one as i lift my hand to slide across the front of my turtleneck shirt.
