Defining moment.

Summary:

Why is duty almost never synonymous with happiness?

Notes:

It might be the same universe as the other one, just 16 long years into the future.

Work Text:

'It was never you! I mean it was you, I- it's you!'

Wangji turns his steps to the road and does his best to keep his back straight. It's not hurt he's feeling, it's not. His relationship with Wei Ying has never been close enough to make such feeling arise. He's mostly disappointed. Dissatisfied, even, with Wei Ying's lack of decorum. Not hurt, no-
His sleeve is suddenly pulled back. He doesn't turn to look, doing his best to keep calm and settle his face in its usual mask.

'Listen to me! Lan Zhan, it's you! I swear it! How could it even be someone else. I know I speak a lot and say little of importance but you know me better than that. Lan Zhan I would never make light of this thing between us.'

His back is still turned, keeping strong and steadfast. Lan Zhan knows that in this moment, more than ever in this acquaintance with Wei Ying, he has the power to turn the tides in his favour.

'What thing? There is nothing between us.'

He fails.

'You may lie to yourself all you want but I know better. I know how I feel about you, and yes I admit it took me a long time to get here but Lan Zhan, I'm here. I am here. Don't you want to meet me half way?'
