Hi. Let me share to you a fool-proof plan to cook tteokbokki because instant is trash, and I found this good sale on rice cakes (more like the saleslady basically shoved all of it into my cart) and the gochujang my mom gave me six months ago is still untouched and rotting (well, not really, gochujang doesn’t go bad easily) in my fridge. This is my first time actually attempting to cook, and you know that little ambitious moment when you feel like the kitchen is calling out to you? Yup. I felt that. Starting to feel like I heard the signs wrong.

Recipe based on [link] with a few revisions on my part because apparently 500g of rice cakes is a bit much.

Ingredients:

Rice cakes (duh) – I opened a whole 500g pack of it. (I got at least 4 more in the fridge)

Fish cakes – 250 g (You get a free 250g fishcake every 2 bags of 500g rice cake)

3 cups of Soup stock (preferably the dried kelp and dried anchovy one)

3 white onions, sliced. (go crazy with your slices, go wild)

For the sauce (mix mix all these in bowl):

Gochujang – I eyeballed it, but I think I put in 5 tbsp

Sugar – 2 tbsps, I think

Soy sauce 2 tbsp

Garlic, minced, 2 tsp

3 tsp gochugaru (FUCKING CLOSE YOUR EYES WHEN YOU PUT THESE IN I WAS SO LUCKY I HAD GLASSES ON IT’S A FUCKING RED POWDER OF EYE DEATH)

For the garnish:

Roasted sesame seeds (2 tsp, I love crunch crunch, but I advise you put in only one tsp)

Green onion, 1 stalk, minced

Important Ingredient: self-confidence, you can do it! (pfrrt)

  1. Prep tteokbokki, soak in warm water for 10 mins.
  2. Boil the stock in a shallow pot, orrrr Find a sauce pan, or anything that you can boil the stock in. (note: find a big pan. Had to borrow one from neighbor next door. He was cute, and also mildly concerned why I wanted to borrow a sauce pan, and this is the first time we met each other. Said I was making tteokbokki. Promised to give him portions)
  3. While the stock is coming to a boil, slowly incorporate and stir in the sauce (as per advice of said (hot) neighbor, who managed to let himself in, because he was too concerned of what would happen to Anna (yep, he named his fucking sauce pan, weirdo, but cute) and asked if I wanted help with the tteokbokki. I let him in, despite him being a stranger, at least if the kitchen were to be on fire, I’d have someone to help me. Also, eye candy would not hurt. And strong reliable arms that help me reach out kitchen tools that I am perfectly capable to reach on my own.)
  4. While the while the mixture is boiling, add in the rice cakes and fish cakes, as well as the onion, and let them boil for 3-5 mins (until rice cakes are soft. Or like until I remembered them because I spent those 3-5 mins (or more? Teehee) talking with the neighbor. I now know his name, and he knows mine. And some cute info I’m too selfish to share. He also checked on and stirred the pot like a few times, and I was too distracted by his arms, canines, and cute laugh.)
  5. Turn to low heat, and let it simmer for 2-4 minutes (for thicker sauce, said my thick neighbor, who was apparently a chef??? (there I gave you info, now focus on my recipe now!)
  6. Add in the garnish, then stir (I did it this time, and he said I got good stirring skills. Had to apply my “mildy uninterested” stir right there with my girlypop wrists. He then said I got cute wrists. Pin them up against the wall then?)
  7. Serve warm, eat it together, talk for a bit more, get comfy, and secure yourself a date with the hot neighbor you apparently have.

Edit (070223): date secured :>

Edit (072523): boyfriend secured :>
