Work Text:
“Sit down and shut up.” Izuku straightened in his seat and watched his homeroom teacher enter the classroom with Katsuki trailing behind him. “Bakugo was hit with a quirk over the weekend.” Instant worry and panic overcame him, but he quickly pushed it down. “He’s fine but...” There was always a but. Always. “He doesn’t remember one of you.” The pair of dark tired eyes landed on him. “Midoriya, please raise your hand.”
It was him.
Katsuki forgot him.
Izuku swallowed thickly as he raised his scarred hand into the air. Scarlet red eyes locked onto him in an instant. “You sit here, Ka—Bakugo.” he said with a slight shake to his voice.
The room filled with gasps, but Aizawa flashed his quirk to shut the rest of them up. “Bakugo, please take your seat and we will begin with a pop quiz then move on to training out at Ground Beta.”
Katsuki hunched over, stuffing his hands deep into his pockets as he walked across the room to the desk in front of him. Katsuki didn’t even spare him a glance as he sat down and got ready for the quiz.
His heart shattered into pieces.
All the work on repairing their relationship, making it bloom into something he only ever dreamed of... and how it was easily ripped away from him in the blink of an eye.
It hurt.
His body began to tremble as painful tears pricked his eyes. He needed to run. Leave and hide away but a hand gently fell on his shoulder. Shinso.
Shinso was the only one that knew what was going on with him.
Katsuki was not only his friend again, but they had been secretly dating for seven months. Seven months of pure happiness and Katsuki didn’t even know who he was.
“Breathe. Going into a panic won’t help anyone...” Shinso whispered low enough for only his ear, “You’re smart as fuck and can break whatever quirk he’s under.”
Izuku nodded a bit. That was his second nature. Quirks were his thing. It should be an—
“Midoriya?” Izuku lifted his eyes to the familiar voice. Green met red but these red eyes didn’t hold the same loving gaze they had for the last year and a half. “Ya want a quiz?” Katsuki asked and waved the quiz a little closer to face.
“Y-Yeah... sorry.” He took the stack of papers and placed one on his desk before passing them back to Shinso. Katsuki only forgot him... No one else. Him.
What in the world was this quirk?
“Midoriya.” Aizawa called from the center of Ground Beta. “You will be facing me today.” Izuku instantly perked up. Facing Aizawa was one of his biggest challenges, but he loved it. Aizawa knew exactly what he needed to work on and Izuku got an amazing experience. “Everyone else, you can either watch or quirkless spar with your classmates in Gym Gemma.”
Everyone knew that when he was up against anyone, it was bound to be a long battle. Shinso, Kirishima and... Katsuki stayed behind to watch the fight between the two.
“I’m ready, Mr. Aizawa.” He said, curling his hands into tight fists and spreading One for All throughout his body at 25%. A small burst of light bounced from his body and was instantly replaced with the crackles of lightning dancing over his suit.
Aizawa lowered his yellow goggles over his tired eyes, “Problem child. Do not destroy the grounds again.”
Izuku smiled brightly, “No, promises!” A thick purple smoke screen rushed from his body, clouding the area, hiding him from sight. “I don’t know why you’d think I’d do such a thing.”
The sadness and worry of his boyfriend slowly slipped his mind. Izuku had a battle in front of him, worrying about a quirk wasn’t going to let him win.
“Always a problem child.” Aizawa snickered to his left.
“That’s me!” Danger Sense pinged his mind and he ducked down, rolling to the right. A white piece of capturing weapon flew over his head and retreated back to its owner.
Rolling to a crouch, he scanned the area through the purple smoke. He still had his quirk which meant Aizawa hadn’t laid eyes on him yet. All he needed to do was get the upper hand and—
“You shouldn’t get in your head, problem child. Villains will strike you down in an instant.” A heavy combat boot hit right between his shoulder blades, knocking him to the ground. “Give up?”
“Never.” He gritted out with his cheek smashed to the gravel. “I’m just getting started.” The green sparks disappeared, rendering him quirkless.
Good thing he’s been quirkless all his life... and Aizawa trained him.
He pressed his white gloves into the ground and pushed up with all his might. He beat Shigaraki, All for One... and won the battle. He’s grown. Become a better person and hero... with one person beside him along the way.
Izuku looked over to find Katsuki watching him closely with intense scarlet eyes. Kachan’s watching. Show him how amazing you’ve become. A battle cry spilled from his lips as he pushed and jerked back hard enough to cause his teacher to stumble back. He jumped to his feet. One thing he learned when fighting his teacher was to get it over quickly.
Aizawa wasn’t called the best underground hero for nothing, ya know.
Izuku kicked out his leg, landing his heel in the man’s stomach. A rush of power flooded him and his quirk was back. Black whip snapped from his knuckles, wrapping around the hero in front of him and pulling him right into his bent knee.
Aizawa grunted at the impact. Izuku quickly pushed him to the ground, knee to his chest, panting heavily. Aizawa chuckled lightly, “You’ve come so far, problem child.”
“New record.” He smiled brightly as he straightened and held out his gloved hand, “Five minutes this time.”
“Showing off I take it.” Aizawa said, getting to his feet with the help of his hand. “We don’t know what quirk he came in contact with but somehow you may be the cure.”
“Damn, Midoriya.”
Izuku whipped his head around. He didn’t like it. He didn’t like that name coming from those lips. Katsuki licked his upper lip and smirked over at him.
“That was fucking impressive.” Izuku felt a wave of nauseousness swirl in his stomach. Katsuki... would never say those words to him. Not if he knew the past.
Would they really have been that close if he was never quirkless?
Would Katsuki have been by his side all this time if he was born with a quirk?
“Oi!” Katsuki took a step forward and he matched it with a step back. “Midoriya, you—”
“THAT’S NOT MY NAME!” He shouted. Using One for All at 100%, he bolted from Ground Beta and straight back to his dorm room. Blindly, he let his legs carry him the familiar path, into the dorms and up the stairs to his room. Black whip slammed the door shut behind him, flipping the lock as he fought tooth and nail to get his tight suit off.
His gloved fingers struggled with the zipper under his metal mask. His hands shook as his body trembled to stay afloat. He was drowning. The world was crashing down around him. Why him?! Why his Kachan!?
Kachan...
Izuku’s eyes fell on the black shirt that lay on his floor. That wasn’t just any black shirt... that was Katsuki’s favorite black shirt with the skull on the front. Dropping to his knees, he carefully scooped up the fabric, bringing it to his chest.
“I-I miss you...” He whispered, brokenly.
After a long moment, he stripped himself of his suit, leaving it on the floor and pulled Katsuki’s shirt over his head. “W-What... what if y-you never c-come back?”
“What the fuck was that?” Katsuki asked, mostly himself but someone decided to answer.
Shinso scowled furiously, “You fucking bastard!” Aizawa shook his head a little, the dark locks falling forward towards his scruffy chin.
“Shinso. That’s enough.”
“What!?” The purple haired teen whirled on the man, “How the hell can you say that!? Izuku is—”
“He’ll be fine.” Kirishima interrupted. The blonde stared at his friend with a questioning look but was ignored. “Bakubro, stay away from Mido, kay?”
What the flying fuck was going on?
“What did I do? I don’t even know the guy?!” He protested. Izuku had to be a new student or something! He... he never met him, right?
Aizawa cleared his throat, “We will be heading to the others and doing a few more drills before calling it a day.”
No matter what he did or said, the Troll Doll kept sneering at him. Mocking him. He even tried to use his quirk on him. All those looks pissed him off more and more. Once the day was over, he went to the locker room. Katsuki showered the sweat off his skin and dressed in a pair of sweats with a white shirt that said shirt on the front.
This is fucking stupid.
He’ll deal with that later, there was other matters to deal with, “Troll Doll.” Shinso lifted his head, fingers pausing as he pulled the laces on his shoes. “The fucking truth.”
“I don’t have to fucking tell you shit.”
Katsuki bared his teeth in a growl, “No. But you fucking will.” His lilac eyes narrowed at him with pure rage. “What the fuck is going on?”
Shinso scowled in defeat. “You got hit by some quirk and you forgot the person that means the most to you in this cruel world! Izuku Midoriya isn’t Midoriya to you. It’s been Zuku to Deku and back to Zuku! He’s your boyfriend! Future hero partner and the one you just put down a deposit on an apartment with!
“That guy...” Shinso sighed tiredly, all the fight slipping away, “You bullied him... because he didn’t have a quirk and I can’t speak for Izuku but you saying how good he is. It fucking hurt. Izuku wanted nothing more than to be standing beside you... the only thing that stopped that was him not getting a quirk.”
Katsuki stumbled back into the metal lockers like he’d been punched in the gut. He bullied...? He shook his head back and forth as the pain in his heart grew deeper and deeper until it reached his soul.
“Bakugo... he loves you more than anything. That must mean something.” His eyes lowered to the white shirt. “That’s his favorite shirt.” Shinso left the blonde in the locker room alone with nothing but his thoughts. Those thoughts were nothing but confusing.
Izuku was his... boyfriend.
Why the hell couldn’t he remember that?!
The nerd was fucking cute—hot—damn right sexy with that bubble butt and thick thighs to match... it was no surprise that that was his boyfriend. Izuku looked like the best of the best and he only wanted the best... but why the flying fuck would he bully him!?
None of it made sense.
Katsuki gently closed his locker, eyes never leaving his hand. Did these hands hurt him? Lifting his hand from the metal, he turned it palm up and swallowed thickly. A small glisten of sweat covered his palm ready to pop off an explosion.
How much have you fucked up, Katsuki?
How does Izuku love me?
How do I fix all this?
There was only one place to start and that was with Izuku.
Katsuki knew everyone’s dorm room but one door on the second floor. He didn’t know it because he forgot the fucking love of his life. Damn. How the hell did he get hit with some shitty quirk! Katsuki’s footsteps quickly changed to harsh stomps as he entered the dorm building and turn straight for the stairs.
A group of classmates instantly went silent as he passed through the common room, but he pushed forward up the stairs to Izuku’s room. Fucking gossip hour about how shitty he was... great. He lifted his hand to knock but his body froze.
A small heartbreaking sob came through the door and punched him in the heart.
You did this.
Katsuki flinched. Who the fucking was that?
You only cause pain to the one you love.
No... No, he didn’t. Izuku was happy.
You don’t deserve him.
He knew that! Izuku was pure sunshine while he was an asshole with anger issues.
You’re weak.
But... Izuku makes him stronger.
Katsuki dropped his fist to the wood. “Izuku... open the door please.”
He doesn’t want to see you.
He hates you.
He deserves more than you
“Izuku, please.” He whispered softly, “I-”
The door opened slowly until he was met with a single green eye filled with fresh tears as old tears stained his freckled cheeks. Izuku’s tussled curls were an absolute mess and his fingers itched to fix them. Like it was his job to fix them.
Katsuki opened his mouth, but Izuku beat him with a very important question. “W-Who am I...?” That was an amazing question.
“My... heart knows you. My brain is giving me mixed fucking signals...” Katsuki shifted on his feet, sighing, “You’re important and I’d like to fucking talk.”
Izuku shuffled back enough to let him slip into the room and closed the door behind him. “N-Nothing to talk about...”
“Troll Doll says otherwise.” Izuku tucked his chin to his chest. The curls created a shield for his eyes, but it didn’t hide the droplets of tears falling to the floor between them. “Izuku...”
Izuku shook his head a bit, “You...” He whispered wetly, “It’s not fair...”
“I know.”
“A-And you think I-I'm cool now cause I-I have a q-quirk.”
“No...”
The green eyes flew up to meet his, “T-That’s a lie, Kachan!” Something about that name changed everything. Katsuki stumbled back into the door, gripping the front of his borrowed shirt. Suddenly, it felt like he was watching a movie behind his eyes. Years of memories that he and Izuku, shared, lived and even cried through were slammed into his brain. “K-Kachan?”
This time... it was his turn to cry.
“I fucking made a wish...” He cried out, sliding down the wood of the door. Izuku quickly followed him. “I-I didn’t mean it! I just fucking was in my head—”
“C-Cause you still can’t a-accept that I-I forgave you?” Izuku finished for him. He always knew what was going on in his head. “W-What did you wish?”
Katsuki grimaced, pursing his lips for just a moment. “My niece... we watched a dumb movie where the girl gets into a crash and forgets her husband.”
“The Vow?” Izuku laughed wetly, “So, you wished to forget me?”
“No! Fuck no!” He shouted, “Fuck! I wished for a do over, not to fucking forget you. It must be that brat’s quirk cause after I muttered it, I couldn’t remember you. Hobo said something about you and I asked who in the fuck he was talking about.
“I wanted to start over with you and do it right—”
Izuku snorted loudly, “Kachan, we don’t play by the rules or do things the right way. We never have and for the love of All Might—I forgave you! I don’t want to have some do over where we... okay I didn’t like the bullying but I understand why.
“We’ve talked about this.” The nerd forced his way into his lap and nuzzled his nose into the crook of his neck, “I love you... I love our past, present and future.”
Katsuki sighed happily, wrapping his arms around his love and holding him tightly, “I couldn’t have been less of an asshole but whatever.”
“You’re my asshole, babe, it would be weird to have it any other way.”
Damn, he was right.
Sunshine and the asshole. Can’t have that any other way.
