Work Text:

Gojo conceals the fact that he suffers from an incurable illness from Utahime so as not to worry her. He wanted to call her and tell her how much he loved her, but as he waited for her to answer, he suddenly felt anxious.

His heart pounded against his rib cage. Hearing her voice was excruciatingly painful. He wanted to cry, but he bit his lower lip to keep the tears at bay. He planned to leave this woman in this world. He had no idea how painful it was, but he was exhausted. He does not want to be a burden to others, particularly her. It’s too difficult for him to say, “I love you so much.” He doesn’t want to trap Utahime in his love.

He will be leaving the world at any moment, so what’s the purpose of saying those words? Furthermore, hearing her cheerful voice made him think that right now was not the time to say it. While tears streamed down his cheeks, he happily listened to her stories.

His voice was shaky because of a lump in his throat, which worried her. He lied when she asked if he was okay. “Everything is fine, Hime; continue,” he said, biting his lower lip again to keep the sobs from escaping his mouth.

Gojo sighed as their conversation came to an end. “Are you tired, Satoru?” she inquired. He nodded, as if he thought she could see him. He bit his lower lip hard to stop his sobs again. It was too difficult for him, but he needed to do it. He must not ruin her day. That was the last thing he could think about before closing his eyes.

“Uhm…” The lump in his throat forced him to pause.

“What happened, Satoru?” she asked.

“Nothing. Uhh, Hime. I’m tired, very tired.” He said.

“Could I rest now?” He closes his eyes slowly, fighting for his life while waiting for her to respond.

“Sure!” “Good night, babe,” he said as tears streamed down his cheeks.

“Good night, my love.” He suddenly paused. “See you…” After saying those words, his strength, vision, and breath gradually faded, but Utahime had no idea it was the last good night she would hear from him before he died.
