Safe, Not Sound

Summary:

She noticed that his eyes were different.
The gold in them was always a little darker, never quite the amber that the rest of the Cullen family maintained.
It wasn’t something Jasper cared to discuss. He was more interested in the stray human that Carlisle let in, and why she knew more than she should.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Chapter Text

Lonely, lost little lamb

That no one understands

Seems to always

Hide at the edge of the room

“Jasper.”

She was bleeding. A slight abrasion of the top-most layer of skin. Not enough for rich, continuous blood flow, but just enough to persuade him to stop.

It was such a sweet aroma. It sharpened his senses, and beckoned him to come closer. Jasper narrowed his eyes as his vision locked onto the source. It was her hand, reddened with the faint stain of blood. Scraped palm and fingers.

“Jasper,” the voice insisted with a tug on his arm.

He shrugged the hand away, taking a step closer to the opening. The hiking trail paused in this section of the forest to give way to a gorgeous view of a waterfall. Picnic tables were scattered around, dripping wet from the recent splash of rain. Two young women sat at one of them, seemingly catching their breath. The one who was bleeding had her hand out, squinting at her injury.

Human saliva was antibacterial. Jasper knew he wanted her when she began licking her fingers.

He was already cataloging her scent and her voice. He was considering the liability posed by her friend when the hand returned to his shoulder, fingers like claws. “Let’s head up to the mountains.”

But he watched, tongue running over his teeth as the woman showed her hand to her friend. They exchanged words, and the woman began clenching and unclenching her hand into a fist.

“She’s increasing her blood flow,” Jasper murmured, watching closely. “Stupid.”

“We’re supposed to be hunting.”

His response was automatic. “I am hunting.”

Alice Cullen’s expression cooled momentarily, but then she gave him a smile he knew wasn’t genuine. “No, because we had a deal.” She began peeling away from his line of vision, and he resented her for the distraction. “You can only have one at a time.”

Jasper’s lips curled downward, an image of a young woman banging her fists raw on the cabin door flashed before him. “She won’t be dead for another month.”

Alice shrugged, skipping along further into the trees. “Kill her, and you can have this one.”

Simple.

A/N: I can't explore this side of Jasper in HIWYTSL, so I'm doing it here. You may not like this one. Mind the tags.
