Work Text:

They weren't together.

As much as people wanted to believe they were, they weren't. That was that. Miles Morales and Hobie Brown were just friends.

They both knew there were feelings there. Acting on those feelings was an entirely different story. Both boys were just too stubborn to be the first one to admit they wanted the other. It was a childish feud with no meaning because no one was standing in their way.

It started when they first met. They had a few mutual friends but seemed to avoid meeting each other until then. It was at one of Pavitr's huge parties, that everyone went to. Miles had been talking to Gwen when he showed up. He being Hobie Brown. It was love at first sight. Miles looked up at the boy, and was mesmerized by sharp cheekbones, full lips covered in black lipstick, and silver jewelry sticking out…everywhere. His eyes made their way further up, admiring the well taken care of wicks on his head, and as he was in his trance the boy spoke. 'Hey Gwendy, whose this?' Miles almost lost it right then and there. His voice was low and sent a chill up his spine. No to mention his accent. So yeah, Miles had it bad. And judging from the look in the other boy's eyes he wasn't the only one.

That night after they had been introduced it seemed like Hobie was stuck to his side. They talked and became familiar and they danced and they drank. Both had flushed cheeks by the end of the night despite their dark complexions. The party had begun to cool down and people were leaving. Miles was staying at Pavitr's that night so he stayed behind. When Hobie was finally turning to leave he gave Miles a kiss and walked out like it was nothing. What a night.

They didn't see each other much after that. Though Hobie was constantly on Miles' mind. They hadn't even exchanged numbers, and Miles was too afraid to ask Gwen in fear of her teasing him. He was content to just assume he wouldn't see the boy again, until he did. Miles was ready to go talk to him until he noticed something, or rather someone. It was a girl, and she was hanging off of Hobie's arm. Miles stopped, biting his lip and he made his decision. He walked over to the two of them. 'Hey Hobie!' The other boy seemed startled and Miles just smiled. 'I realized I didn't get your number the other night so thought I should ask.' They exchanged numbers but they didn't talk about what happened at the party. Miles didn't care, it wasn't like he owned Hobie, so he really didn't care.

He was so unbothered by their interactions that he started "seeing" someone else. Someone he plastered on his social media (with no face of course). He would post little things like his date's hand or a gift they had gotten him. It was petty, and for a second he thought it was useless. Until Hobie texted him about it.

'Who is that?' When Miles saw the text he couldn't help but laugh. It was silly the little game they were playing. This game of cat and mouse when they both knew they wanted the other.

'wouldn't you like to know :p'

They were at another Pavitr party, when it happened. Miles had sworn not to drink because it didn't end well last time. He was sitting on the couch watching the crowds of people bump into each other in an attempt to dance. It was hot and the music was loud, so loud. Miles was lost in his own world when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Looking up he saw a familiar pierced face. He smiled, and the other boy smiled back. Hobie was holding a drink, he was saying something that Miles couldn't understand over the music. All he noticed was the hand point in the direction of the hallway, the direction of the rooms. Miles nodded, taking the taller boy's hand and leading him to one of the bedrooms.

They talked for a while, just enjoying each other's company. Miles doesn't remember how they started making out. Maybe Hobie was staring at him with that look in his eyes, like he wanted to devour him. Or maybe Miles was glancing at his lips every so often. How they got there didn't matter, they just got there and God was it fantastic. Hobie tasted like chocolate and cigarettes and his lip ring sent a shiver down Miles' spine, he couldn't help but run his tongue over it.That night Miles found out Hobie had a tongue piercing.

After that party the two were inseparable. If one of them was there the other wasn't far behind. Then the rumors started. Everyone was so invested in what they were to each other, even their own friends. They were easy to ignore at first. It was just teenagers being teenagers. Though unconsciously both boys thought differently. And once again they were going their separate ways.

It was two months of sort of no contact. They hung out at friend events but they never really talked outside of them. It was never just them two hanging out, but they weren't avoiding each other. They weren't. It was just how things were going. And they were content with it, really. Except that wasn't how things were going. To the public eye that's how things were. They were hiding from everyone, including their friends. They would meet every weekend going to a place only they knew about. They never put a label on what they were, they just were and they left it at that.

So it shouldn't have been shocking, when he heard it. But it was, and it hurt. Miles had been eating in the cafeteria sitting at the group's usual table. The girls at the table next to them were talking pretty loud about their boyfriends and Miles was honestly tuning them out. Until he heard his name. Well not his name, but Hobie's. He froze trying his best to listen in to the conversation. 'We're not like officially together, but he did invite me over to his place and we, you know.' The girl ended with a giggle and the other girls followed suit. Miles pulled out his phone and texted Hobie:

'where are you?'

'why so serious babe? i'm omw to the cafeteria'

Miles put his phone back in his pocket, snatched his tray and made his way to the doors of the cafeteria. He stopped to throw his food away and just as he went to open the door Hobie stepped through them with a greeting on his lips. Miles simply grabbed his wrist and dragged him back out, he didn't care if he was causing a scene he was pissed. Which is how we got here.

They ended up in an empty classroom, Miles slamming the door shut.

"Is it true?" He was practically yelling. Confused, Hobie looked at him, raising a pierced eyebrow. If he wasn't so mad Miles would've thought it was hot.

"What?" Hobie intelligently responded. Miles could feel his eye twitch. What? That's all he had to say? Jesus fucking- Taking a breath Miles asked again.

"Is it true that you're taking what's her face back to your place? Because if it is, you could've just told me." Hobie still had a confused look on his face.

"Sorry I don't think I follow." Miles had never wanted to punch him in that gorgeous face until this moment.

"Oh my God! The girls in the cafeteria were talking about boyfriends and this one girl, who I don't know like at all, was saying that you took her to your place and I'm sure you know the rest." Hobie had the nerve to laugh. He was fucking laughing. Was this some sort of joke to him? "What's so funny?"

"You're jealous." Miles gave him an unimpressed look. Hobie put his hands on Miles' waist pulling him closer, close enough that he could bend down and kiss him. "I brought her to my place to work on a project. I think she's exaggerating what happened…a lot." He said with a smile.

"And I'm supposed to believe that?" Miles asked with a pointed look.

"You don’t have to, it's the truth though love." He shrugs. He leans down giving Miles a peck. "But remember what you said darling."

And Miles did remember what he said. They weren't together. He wishes they were though.
