Work Text:
I heard a glass shatter on the wall in the apartment above mine.At first I thought that I was dreaming. But then I heard the voice of a boy,and it sounded like he'd been crying. Now,I'm too worried to be sleeping.
So I took an elevator to the seventh floor, walked down the hall and then I knocked upon his door.He opened up,and I asked about the things I've been hearing.
He said,"I think your ears are playing tricks on you."His sweater was zipped up to his chin."Thanks for caring, sir. It's nice of you,but I have to go back in,"he paused."Wish I could tell you about the noise, but I didn't hear a thing."
He said,"It must have been the wind."
"Must have been the wind?"I echoed.
"Must have been the wind."He agreed.
It must have been the wind.
He said,"It must have been the wind."
"Must have been the wind?"I thought.
"Must have been the wind."His voice resounded.
It must have been the wind.
So I was layin' on the floor of my room, cold concrete on my back. No,I just couldn't shake the feeling.I didn't want to intrude because I knew that I didn't have all the facts, but I couldn't bear the thought of leaving him.
So I took the elevator to the seventh floor.Walked down the hall and then I knocked upon his door.He opened up,and I asked about the things I've been hearing.
He said,"I think your ears are playing tricks on you,"His sweater was zipped up to his chin."Thanks for caring, sir. It's nice of you,but I have to go back in."He paused."Wish I could tell you about the noise, but I didn't hear a thing."
He said,"It must have been the wind."
"Must have been the wind?"I echoed.
"Must have been the wind."He agreed.
It must have been the wind.
He said,"It must have been the wind."
"Must have been the wind?"I repeated.
"Must have been the wind."His voice carried through the back of my mind.
It must have been the wind.
I aim my boombox at the roof,I'm playing "Lean on Me",just so that he knows that he can lean on me.And when he hears the words,I hope he knows he'll be okay.
I aim my boombox at the roof,I'm playing "Lean on Me",just so that she knows that she can lean on me.And when he hears the words,I know exactly what I'll say.
I knock on his door again, this time unprompted by shattering glass. He opened up,and I say,"I promise I'm not playing tricks on you. You're always welcome to come in.You could stay here for an hour or two,if you ever need a friend."He tears up."We can talk about the noise when you're ready, but 'til then,I'll say it must have been the wind."
"Must have been the wind?"He echoes.
"Must have been the wind."I agree.
It must have been the wind.
"I'll say it must have been the wind."
"Must have been the wind?"he asks.
"Must have been the wind."I agree.
It must have been the wind.
I give him a burner phone with my contact information in it."Tell me when the wind is gone."I say before leaving.
A few days later,he texts me through the burner phone,"The wind is gone."No time is wasted.I took an elevator to the seventh floor, walked down the hall and then I knocked upon his door.He opened up,and I asked about the things that happened to him.He said,"I wish your ears were playing tricks on you,"His sweater no longer zipped up to his chin."Thanks for caring, sir. It's nice of you.So I'll tell you how it began."he paused."Wish I could've told you about the noise, but she would've heard everything."
He said,"Because it had not been the wind."
"Had not been the wind?"I echoed.
"Had not been the wind."He agreed
It had not been the wind.
He said,"Because it had not been the wind."
"Had not been the wind?"I echoed.
"Had not been the wind."His voice agreed.
It had not been the wind.
