The Three of Us

Summary:

Roy and Keeley are back together.

Jamie is happy for them, he really is. They're good together and more than anything he wants them to be happy. Doen't mean it doesn't hurt just a little bit.

As for Roy, he's finally getting out of his own way, going after what he wants. Things should be great and for the most part they are but he can't help feeling like there's something missing.

And Keeley, she doesn't regret gettig back with Roy per se, but she wishes she'd had a bit more time to figure everything out first, not least her recently resurfaced feelings for Jamie.

Set after s3e10. Exploring how the relationship between Roy Jamie and Keeley develops now that Roy and Keeley are back together, including lots of feelings, miscommunication, eventually some actually good communication and just a whole lot of love between the three of them.

Notes:

For people reading it for the first time now, this was planned and half written right after s3e10 so doesn’t include anything from the last two episodes.

Chapter Text

Jamie as it turns out is the second person to know about Roy and Keeley getting back together. He’s back from the international break and up at 4am training with Roy again. He’d spent pretty much the entire training session recounted every detail of his time at the England training centre and the time he got to spend on the pitch and Roy seemed genuinely interested. It was nice. Since Phoebe had called them best friends at Uncle’s Day he’d had a sort of renewed confidence in his and Roy’s relationship. As much as Sam and Dani had told him otherwise, he’d been half convinced Roy just tolerated his antics because that’s what was necessary to get him to his full potential and help the team do better, but it seemed by some miracle that Roy actually enjoyed his company.

They were now sitting on a bench eating the pastries they’d got for breakfast, Roy letting Jamie chose whatever he wanted disregarding his specially tailored diet, to celebrate Jamie’s first cap for England.

“Well I’ve been blabberin’ on about meself for the whole morning, you been up to anything exciting since Uncle’s Day?” Roy doesn’t say anything at first, pausing for a lot longer than Jamie would have thought for such a simple question.

“I told Keeley I still love her.” Of all the things Jamie had been expecting, it’s certainly not that. His heart jumps uncomfortably in his chest.

“Shit man, that’s huge. How’d she react?”

“Good, yeah. We’re… trying dating again.”

“That’s great man, I’m so happy for you both.” He really means it. Roy and Keeley were both brilliant and deserved to be with someone as brilliant as each other. Besides he’d always thought Roy was a fucking idiot for breaking up with Keeley (not that he’d say that to his face, both out of fear and desire not to be a dickhead), so he’s glad Roy finally got some sense back.

“Wait if you’re dating her then what the fuck are you doing up with me at 4am?” Roy looks almost offended at that.

“Don’t think that us dating is going to get you out of fucking training.” He stares Jamie down with the classic Roy Kent intensity. Jamie holds his arms up.

“Hey man I weren’t trying to get out of training. Just figured you’d rather be spending the time with your girlfriend than training me.” As he says it he feels his heart sink, like it had only just processed that the time he’d come to look forward to spending with Roy every day surely wouldn’t last long now that he was back into a relationship.

“I get plenty of fucking time to spend with Keeley in the evenings. Training is fucking continuing.” Roy’s tone leaves no room for argument and as stupid as he feels for it, Jamie is comforted by that, knowing that whatever his motivations, Roy isn’t just doing to drop him now that he has Keeley back.

Jamie manages to pry some more details out of Roy as they continued their breakfast. He feels a weird mix of both warmth and a little jealousy watching how a soft almost smile comes across Roy’s face as he speaks about Keeley. The jealousy is manageable though. He’d got over his jealousy with Keeley when she and Roy had been dating before and while his feelings for Roy were a bit newer (or perhaps maybe even older if you counted all the odd feelings in his stomach Jamie had when looking up at his Roy Kent poster when he was a kid), it’s not anything he can’t deal with. Roy and Keeley are two of his favourite people in the world and he’s going to try his damndest to do what he can to ensure they get the happiness they deserved.

“Phoebe wants to see you again.” The abrupt change of conversation startles Jamie out of his thoughts.

“Really? Well she’s fucking brilliant I’d love to hang out with her some more.” Jamie’s sure he’s imagining it but Roy’s face sure does look a lot like the soft smile he’d had talking about Keeley, except this time it’s directed at him. He’s probably thinking about Phoebe, Jamie just happens to be right in front of him.

“I’ll be picking her up after training on Thursday. You can join if you’d like.”

“I’d love to.”  Roy’s mouth twitches upwards and he nods before digging back into his pastry, and Jamie followed suit. He’d made a good choice for his celebration breakfast, these pastries are fucking delicious.

“Coach?” Jamie interrupts their silent eating. Roy grunts in response. “You and Keeley, is it a secret? Not that I’d go gossipin’ about you or anything, just don’t want to accidentally tell people if you don’t want to yet.” Roy looks thoughtful at that.

“Rebecca knows. Not going to go announcing it to the team while we’re still figuring things out.”

“’Course. Makes sense. Well I’d better run if I want time to shower at home before heading to training, so see ya soon.” He gives Roy what he hopes is a friendly squeeze on the shoulder. “Really happy for you man.” Roy nods and returns the gesture. Jamie supposes the whole conversation must have brought his feelings for Roy right to the surface because just the small touch feels like fire and his mind is entirely focused on the spot Roy’s hand had been the whole way back home.

Well he’s certainly fucked isn’t he.
