Work Text:
"Hey baby! How are you feeling today?" Kuroo and you call every night at about 7-ish since he's been gone.
"A little tired, but I've been pretty busy today and I got a lot done, so that's been nice."
"Good, I'm proud of you. I got quite a bit done today as well, but it all seems meaningless to me now knowing I don't get to see my wife afterwards."
"Aww!" The way Kuroo was never embarrassed to tell you his feelings made you feel loved. "Speaking of which, do you know how much longer it will be?" Though you had been in a good mood a moment ago hearing your husbands voice, you now tried to keep your misery out of your speech so he didn't notice.
"Ahh, well," He knew you were going to ask, but he really didn't want to answer. His boss kept prolonging his work, forever keeping him away from home. It's been a full month now. "He told me just an hour ago that it should be no longer than two weeks, which is better than what he told me yesterday, so that's looking up a little bit." His boss told him yesterday that it'd be three weeks, which he neglected to tell you. You guys talked for about ten more minutes before you both realized how tired you were, so you said your good byes.
"I can't stand not being with you tonight. Get good sleep, my love. Good night." You had stupidly hoped that once you hung up the call, you would turn around and he would be right there beside you on your bed, but of course he wasn't, so you went to sleep.
Or, at least, you tried to.
----- 8 hours later -----
It's no use trying to sleep. For the past 8 hours, you've just been laying in your bed, spiraling. You have been thinking about anything and everything, though your depression was actually rooted in missing your husband. You finally gave up on the idea of sleep and got up out of bed and made some coffee. It was a Friday night, so you thought it'd be alright if you pulled an all-nighter. You decided you would just rest tomorrow and it'd be alright.

He had his favorite music blasting in his ear as he exited the train. He was in a great mood despite how exhausted he was. It was 3 am and his wishful thinking payed off as your local supermarket still hadn't closed yet. He wanted to grab you flowers and your favorite cookies before he got home to you. With how long it's taking him to get home, he probably should've just gotten a hotel and see you the next morning, but he couldn't stand sleeping another night without you. He walked down the store aisle, a full bouquet of red roses in one hand and crappy frosted sugar cookies in the other.

You still aren't sure when he's getting home. On your last call he said no more than two weeks, but you're really on your last dregs without him. For the past month, your little routine of getting up and drinking coffee has been very helpful, but tonight it's doing nothing for your love sick heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was no longer than two weeks... according to your last call. But Kuroo's boss let him go shortly after overhearing his call between him and his wife. He thought that he both was a very loyal worker and a very loyal husband. He assigned all of Kuroo's work to a trainee who's been working for two months now and his boss thought he needed the challenge. Immediately after receiving this news, Kuroo ran back to his hotel, packed up, and was on his way back to you — where he belonged. It was 8 hours by train, but he didn't care. He rode straight through with only one break, which was his stop at the supermarket.
You were scrolling aimlessly through Netflix trying to find some crappy K-drama to distract yourself, when- oh crap. You heard someone at your front door, a metal clinking making your heart burst. Someone was actually trying to pick lock their way into your apartment. You wanted to freak out, but you kept calm and grabbed a bat that you keep in the house for protection. You stood by the door, ready to beat the ever-loving crap out of whoever opened the door when you heard a gentle "O h damn it..."
You knew that voice. You now realized you were about to beat the ever-loving crap out of your husband . You dropped the bat and ran to open the door. There stood Kuroo, leaning over trying to pick up his keys. He dropped them trying the unlock the door with his hands full.
“I thought you weren’t supposed to be home for another week?!” You said in a heightened tone, adrenaline still pumping from what first was fear but is now excitement.
“Surprise, baby.” He spoke tenderly, partly because it was 3 am and he was trying to be quiet, but almost entirely because of the way his heart skips a beat every time he looks at you. “I would’ve been home a bit sooner, but I stopped to grab your favorite cookies, so I hope you don’t min-” You threw yourself into his arms and he hugged you the best that he could, considering his hands were still full. “At least let me set my stuff down!” He said this through laughter, though you still heard every word.
“Wait, did you say cookies?” Your mind finally caught up with what he said a few moments ago
“Yes,” he said, his voice full of amusement, “now can I set them down and hug my wife?” You jumped up, turned around in his arms, grabbed the cookies and flowers, set them down on the coffee table, and ran back into his arms. He seemed entertained by your excitement.
“These are my favorite cookies, but they can wait.” You said, face smushed into his chest. He laughed a carefree laugh, though his eyes completely gave away just how overjoyed he was to have you in his embrace. You, of course, didn’t notice because your face was still smushed into his chest. You’re just happy he’s home. Your heart is full as all of your dread and unease leaves your system.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gosh, you’re beautiful. You’re the only thing on his mind right now. He finally realizes how dogs feel like when their owners come home and they’re bouncing and running around everywhere, unable to contain themselves. He seriously hopes you can’t feel the way he feels his heart beat out of his chest.
He pulls one of his arms away from you to grab his luggage which is still sitting just outside of the door. He pulled it inside and shuffled inside to close the door, you now standing in between his legs as you hadn’t moved at all. He looked down at you thinking that you are the only thing in the entire world that could ever make him feel so whole.
“Can I see your beautiful face, baby? I miss it.” You didn’t look up, still holding him tightly, not moving. He’s now worried, thinking he might’ve done something wrong. He rubbed his thumb in circles on your lower back where he’s been holding you.
“Are you ok?” He leaned back so he could maybe get a glimpse of you, maybe even causing you to look up at him, but instead you shove your face right back into him. Your body is very tense and he’s incredibly concerned. He’s wracking his mind trying to think of what could possibly be wrong. You seemed fine moments ago.
“Honey, are you mad at me? I know I was gone for a while, but I did everything I could to come back home. I finished my work as soon as possible the second it was assigned to me. I even, embarrassingly enough, sucked up to my boss hoping I could be let go early. I bought him lunch 5 or 6 times. I mean, you know it takes a lot to embarrass me, but baby it was kinda pathetic. I just really wanted to come back home to you and-” he both sighed in relief and tried to keep a smile off of his face as he shook his head at you. He finally realized you were playing with him. You started giggling at your stupid joke and at the idea of Kuroo sucking up to his boss like that.
“Oh you little,” he scooped you up and carried you to your shared bedroom and threw you onto the bed. He grinned listening to your screams of protest mixed with laughter. He took his tie off and threw it aside, eyes locked on you. You untangled yourself from the blankets and sat up on the bed, your eyes also focused on him. He sat down next to you on the bed, both of you smiling joyfully. You stared at him as though he were the moon and the stars; he stared at you as though a fire were lit up inside his heart.
“Kiss me, baby”
You both crashed into each other like waves against a lighthouse in a storm. You kissed with such strong desire so as to make up for lost time. He held you strongly, almost as if he was scared he was going to lose you again, one hand on your waist and the other around your neck. You threw your arms around him, desperate to be as close as possible to him, your hands both on his jawline and his neck. You made your way up to the nape of his neck, tugging on his hair, only making him want you more. After a moment, you both pulled away, gasping for air. Kuroo thought to himself that he’d rather suffocate than pull away from you, but he did reluctantly obey his survival instincts. Still breathing heavily, he grins, satisfied, and said to you
“How could we ever go so long without that?”
