Chapter Text
Yunjin and Chaewon had been dating for a year. They had met a while ago but hadn’t got the chance to be close until they debuted again together they had hit it off immediately. Despite their busy schedules and peering eyes they had managed to make the relationship work. But now, things are starting to unravel.
Yunjin would like to think everything was fine between her and Chaewon, but she can’t because of the way Chaewon acts. She’s always touchy with Kazuha. Sneaking off with her too. Yunjin noticed at first she thought that maybe she had been overthinking it. Chaewon can hang out and touch whoever she wants. It’s gotten too far now she always looks flustered around Kazuha always coming back to the dorm hours later dance practice had ended with Kazuha with her clothes messy and her face flushed. Yunjin didn’t want to jump to conclusions but that’s just one thing that’s bearing on their relationship. Chaewon never puts in as much effort as she does for their dates even though there’s schedules, Yunjin still goes out of her way to do the best she can each time. They never have time alone either. Chaewon always claims she’s tired each and every single time. Recently she’s been getting distant in favor of Kazuha who Yunjin always sees with Chaewon, it’s starting to piss Yunjin off truly. So she confronts Chaewon in her room. She was lucky enough for Kazuha to not be there.
“ Do you need something yun?” Chaewon asks sweetly
“ Do you have something for Kazuha? “ Yunjin gets straight to the point
Chaewon looks at her incredulously “ What? No, why would I have something for her, yun?”
“Because you both seem very close these days coming home late from dance practice with your clothes way more messed up then they need to be, you always look flustered around her, it’s like you give all your time to her. Whenever I ask for your time I’m always met with an ‘I’m tired’” Yunjin states with a sigh
“Can I not just hang out with her? Plus you know how busy our schedules are. I can feel tired sometimes. “ Chaewon says with an annoyed huff
“Our schedules are always busy when it comes to me but not Kazuha?”
The tension rises with each word
“ We don’t always have to hang out, yunjin why are you being clingy?”
“Me? Clingy ?.. Chaewon we are literally in a relationship! I think I should be able to hang out alone with my girlfriend sometimes, right?” Yunjin finds herself getting more and more mad each time Chaewon opens her mouth to speak.
“ Well maybe I just want space. I don't want to be around you all the time. Can I not just hang out with the others? You act like you own me Yunjin like you’re the only one who can touch me or hang out with me.” Chaewon raises her voice and Yunjin is sure the others can probably hear them arguing but at the moment she doesn’t care.
“ Maybe just maybe Chaewon i want to spend time with my girlfriend. You do remember we are dating, right? Or did you forget that too, like the multiple date nights you’ve forgotten because you were with Kazuha.” Yunjins feeling her blood boil Chaewon is being crazy.
“Well maybe I don't want to spend time with you. You’re suffocating Yunjin. Just get out.” Chaewon says with a huff
“ How am I being suffocating? I just want you to pay attention to me, can’t you see that our relationship is crumbling?” Yunjin is giving up and at this point her voice lowers no longer screaming, she just wants chaewon to pay attention.
“Did you not hear me Yunjin? I said, "Get out.” Chaewon can taste the own venom on her tongue but she can’t take it back now
“Fine.” Yunjin pushes past Chaewon, walking out as she slams the door behind her. She notices the other members looking at her with a worried expression; she just turns the other way towards her room and slams her door shut.
Yunjin felt so angry that she could just..cry. That's all she wanted to do so she sat and cried for hours before hearing her door open. Yunjin found it crazy how someone who can make her the happiest person in the world can also make her the saddest.
Yunjin looked up only to see the cause of her tears. She got up quickly not wanting chaewon to see how much she had affected her. They both stood and looked at each other not knowing what to say. Chaewon grabbed Yunjins arm and pulled her in for a hug. She made sure to hold on tight so Yunjin couldn't break free.
“What’re you doing, Chaewon get off of me.” Anger quickly bubbling in yunjin
“I’m sorry yun. I didn't mean what I said, I was just in a bad mood.” Chaewon speaks calmly
“It took you hours to come here and apologize Chaewon . You're not sorry.”
“How can I prove I'm sorry Yun? I'll make it up to you, I swear.” Chaewon says pleading
“ How about you fix everything I was talking about? You need to pay attention to me and our relationship and you don't get to just say those things because you were in a bad mood.”
“ I’ll fix it, I promise Yun this won't happen again.” Chaewon says assuringly
This was the last of the promises that they got to break during their relationship. It was a constant cycle but this fight set yunjin straight although she gave in she really started thinking about their relationship contemplating if it was good for either of them they have good moments of course but the bad over powers them.
It had started with small arguments, disagreements over trivial things. But those small cracks had grown into chasms, and they were now on the verge of breaking up. It had been a month since that fight but Chaewon broke her promise again, going back to her old ways, going back to not paying attention. So on a free day they had in their schedule, Yunjin invited Chaewon out to a small cafe by the company. Surprisingly, Chaewon said yes. Yunjin was getting nervous and was starting to second guess herself but she knew she had to go through with it she wouldn’t let either of them continue to let this cycle go on.
The two of them sat in a cafe, sipping their drinks in silence. Yunjin kept stealing glances at Chaewon, trying to find the words to say what was on her mind. Finally, she took a deep breath and spoke.
"Chaewon...I think we need to talk."
Chaewon looked up from her drink, a hint of apprehension in her eyes.
"Okay," she said softly. "What's on your mind?"
Yunjin took another deep breath, trying to steady herself.
"I've been feeling like things aren't working between us lately," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "We've been fighting more and more, and...I don't know. I just don't think we're right for each other."
Chaewon's eyes widened in shock.
"What are you saying?" she asked, her voice shaking. "You want to break up?"
Yunjin nodded, tears starting to well up in her eyes.
"I'm sorry," she said, her voice cracking. "I just don't think we're good for each other anymore. This is the last thing I want Chaewon trust me but I don’t think we can fix this, we keep on going with this cycle making false promises. Everything is great for a month at best then the promise gets broken i can't.. We can't do this anymore, it'll only hurt more in the end."
Chaewon stared at her, her heart breaking. She had thought everything was fine between them, after the last fight that they were happy together. But now she could see that there had been something brewing beneath the surface, something that she had been blind to.
Yunjin swore she could hear Chaewon’s heartbreak making her want to take it all back and just hug her but she knew she couldn’t because this was for the best. Chaewon was damaging her although yunjin loved the push and pull of it all, she knew they couldn't go on like this.
"I...I don't know what to say," she stammered. "I don't want to break up. Can't we at least try to work things out? It could be different this time you don’t know we can't just give up."
Yunjin shook her head sadly.
"I don't think we can," she said. "I think it's better if we both move on."
They sat in silence for a few moments, both lost in their own thoughts. Finally, Chaewon spoke.
"I...I just want you to know that I'll always love you Yunjin," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Even if we're not together, I'll never forget what we had."
The moments they had together are flashing through Chaewon’s mind. All the secret touches all the late nights talking, laughing, kissing. The nights that were hard just crying together just being together like there was no one else around. Chaewon remembered all the good moments but not the bad ones, her mind shutting them out wanting things to continue to be perfect. She came to find out that nothing can be perfect. She began to remember the bad times, the screaming at each other, the tears, the broken promises. Chaewon regrets it all she wishes she could go back but it's far too late now.
There were too many thoughts going on in Chaewons head. She didn't want things to end with Yunjin; it couldn't be the end of them, right? There's so many things left undone but were they too naive for thinking they had a future in the first place? Chaewon could feel the color draining out of everything, her world becoming bleak with the sudden realization that she and Yunjin have broken up. She felt sick to her stomach as if her world was actively collapsing around her. She wishes that they wouldn’t throw everything away like this.
Yunjin nodded, tears streaming down her face. The moments they had also flooded through Yunjin’s mind. The arguments they had. It would always get so bad that one of them would end up crying or just leaving, ignoring each other, the broken promises, purposefully making each other jealous with the other members. That wasn’t fair to anyone. She also remembers the good times like how she and Chaewon had dressed up as the grinch and a decorated tree for the christmas live although she protested, Chaewon got her into that grinch costume. She remembers all the secrets they shared and the handful of dates they went on, the games they’d play. She’d seen the way Chaewon acted as if nothing was wrong. That's why it only hurt her more to break up with her.
"I'll always love you too," she said. "But I think it's time to say goodbye."
With that, they both stood up and embraced, holding onto each other tightly. It was the last time they would ever be together as a couple. They knew as soon as they let go it was truly over.
