Work Text:
Stepping into the weathervane, Xavier lowered his umbrella and set it down with the others by the door. Shaking himself slightly, he went up to the counter acknowledging Tyler with a glance. “The regular?” the older asked him. He nodded mutely, and slid away from the loud coffee making machines, dropping a few bills in the tip jar once Tyler turned.
Sitting down at his usual booth in the back, he thought about how the rain always got him down. When he and Bianca were dating, it was when her siren power was at its fullest, and he always felt uneasy even if he believed she'd never use them on him. And now it was valentines day, and he found himself alone yet again.
He thought back to Wednesday, her reluctant smile, though it looked more like a cringe, when he was with her and Enid this morning. Enid had been incredibly excited for their first valentine's day together, she had made them matching bracelets and had the whole day planned. Xavier pulled out his sketchbook and sighed. He was happy for them, he was, but there wasn't anything quite like seeing all the happy couples bustling about. It wasn't just at school, it was all around town too. He drew his pencil out and started doodling a couple across the cafe.
As he was adding the last touch of a halo and wings to one and horns to the other, he felt a presence above him. His head shot up reflexively and he got ready to bark at the person about personal space when he saw it was Tyler. He relaxed some, but not much, and stared at him. “Uhm, here's your order” Xavier looked at the tray being placed down, “This isn't what I-” he stopped, his voice dying in his throat as he looked at what was brought to him. It was his usual, but there was an extra plate. It had a heart-shaped rasberry scone on it. With a startle he realized under the plate just peeking out there was a napkin with a phone number on it.
Disbelief shook him, had Tyler meant to give this to him? Would he go this far with a joke after claiming how much he'd changed after all this time? As he looked up at him and saw the brilliant pink that seemed to engulf his face his questions seemed to float right out of his head, no longer mattering. He felt the blood rushing to his cheeks, and looked back down. His drawing of the couple looked back at him, now they were fully facing him and both the angel and the demon gave him a thumbs up.
He looked back up at Tyler and saw him looking at the book. Xavier quickly slammed it shut, startling him. “I- Sorry, I can't control it yet.” if he didn't know any better he'd say Tyler looked smitten, or at the very least more embarrassed.
Keeping eye contact, Xavier let out a soft sigh, “Are you sure you want to do this?” Tyler somehow got redder as he said “I was hoping we could maybe get dinner first-” Xavier couldn't contain his slight smile, “but yes. I'd like to get to know you better than just your coffee order.”
Xavier looked away smiling more brightly now, and as he looked back he joked, “Did it take you all day to come up with that one?”
Tyler grinned, “Sorta, yeah. I get off at-” “4, I know,” Xavier looked sheepish as he cut him off. “I only know that because I'm here a lot, don't look into it too much” he spoke firmly, but the shine in his eyes showed Tyler how much this meant to him. Still, he nodded at him goodbye, a line had been forming at the counter.
As Xavier picked up his coffee and pencil, and started drawing a specific barista, he couldn't help but think, I guess the rain isn't so bad.
