The first time Blanc called to gauge interest in joining him on a case, Helen was grading a stack of book reports and had to politely decline.
The second time was after Miles Bron's lengthy trial with Blanc offering an interesting case involving a Fabergé egg.
The third time, she had already used her sick days.
The fourth time, she missed the call and told herself she would call back.
Five days later, she couldn't get a hold of Blanc and called Phillip.
"Hello Helen."
"Phillip! How are you and Blanc?"
Phillip's sudden, shaky sob started her first solo case.
