“Hikari,” says Takeru, “do you believe in soulmates?”
They are lying on their backs in the park, watching sunlight dappling through the trees. The wind blows, dispersing the fragrance of early summer.
“I think soulmates exist,” Hikari replies, “but I don’t think there’s only one person out there for us. If so, what are the odds that we would find them in our lifetimes?” She shifts to her side. Their eyes meet. “What do you think?”
He smiles. “I mostly agree with you,” he says, and nudges his hand a little closer to hers.
He thinks, mine is right here.
