Work Text:
It was a normal day where Kamala and Miles were studying for their tests, helping each other as they go. Normally, Sam would tag along to complete the trio, but since it was just studying, something Sam less than enjoys, they chose to not bother him. Miles was working on math as Kamala worked on science, admittedly her least favorite class. It just doesn’t make much sense to her, Sam even understands it better than her. (if it’s about space, that is) As Kamala reads the never-ending textbook, she starts to drift off, then accidentally hits her head on the desk.
“Owwww,” Kamala whines, shooting back and rubbing her forehead. Miles simply snickers, not looking away from the equation he’s currently working on. With people like Amadeus Riri or even Viv on the team, it’s sometimes hard to remember how smart Miles is. Sure, he doesn’t know how to build a mech, but he’s able to keep up all A’s in school while being a superhero, so that has to count for something. Kamala picks up her phone to put on music and notices a notification from her mom. Kamala opens up the phone just before it suddenly dies, she must have forgotten to change it last night. Kamala groans and turns toward Miles. “Can I use your phone to text my mom? Mine just died,”
Without even a second thought Miles picks it up and tosses it. “You remember the passcode right?”
“Duh,” Kamala simply responds, turning on the phone to notice a text notification. “Oh hey, Miles, you got a text from-” Kamala pauses, stunned with disbelief as she reads the nickname, “Prince <3” That disbelief quickly turns into excitement. “Miles” She taunts, elongation the last S. He looks to Kamala as she waves the phone in his face.
“Kamala, whatever you're trying to show me I can’t see since you're moving the phone so much” Miles deadpans. Kamala quickly yanks him closer so that he's leading out of his chair and shows him the text notification, Making his face go red from embarrassment.
“Are you dating them or are they just a crush?” Miles ignores the question and tries to grab his phone back, but Kamala simply moves it out of reach.
“Will you drop this conversation if I answer?”
“Maybe” you can hear to cheeky smile in her voice, Miles just sighs in defeat. He needs to stop making friends with such stubborn people
“I’m dating him,” Miles admits. Kamala looks slightly stunned, before realizing and quickly adding “Oh yea, forgot to mention I’m Bi, sorry” Kamala simply smiles and hugs him tighter. Before Miles realizes “Wait, did you think I put “Prince” on accident instead of “princess”?”
“I would never assume that of you” Kamala gasps, a slight hint of offense. “I assumed it was a guy, but for some reason it was surprising. Miles and Kamala laugh. Miles escapes Kamala’s grasp and is about to say something when Kamala asks the dreaded question, “So who is it?” Miles sighs and fidgets a bit.
“Kamala listen, you’re the first person I would tell but I can’t, we agreed to keep it private.” Kamala attempts to sway Miles with puppy dog eyes but gives up after a while.
“Alright, I’m sorry I’ll respect your privacy,”
“Thank you, K. Now text your mom, gosh.” Miles playfully pushes Kamala’s head to the side and turns back to his math.
After a few minutes, Kamala stands up and hands Miles back his phone after shoving the textbook back into her backpack. “Sorry I have to go, Thanks for the help!” Kamala states, waving goodbye as she speedwalks away. Miles waves goodbye and turns back to his work. Miles sighs and decides to finish for tonight and starts to pack up his things.
As Miles sits down on the subway he feels a vibration in his pocket. He pulls out his phone to see that “Prince <3” texted.
“Watcha up to? Can we call :)
“I’m assuming you were busy then, you free now?
“Hey dude! Sorry I didn’t respond earlier, on the subway atm”
“As soon as I’m home we can call <3”
“ :3 <3 <3”

Sam laughs at his own message. It’s so, so dumb, but he just guesses that’s love. It’s hard to tell though, maybe Sam was always this dumb. That wouldn’t surprise him, though looking back some of his actions were embarrassing, to say the least.
“What are you laughing at?” Kaelynn asks from behind him. Sam quickly hides his phone on his chest and slumps down. Kaelynn giggles and attempts to snatch Sam’s phone from behind the couch. This leads to Sam holding his phone high above Kaelynn as she tries to jump up and reach it. “Come onnnn, let me see” Kaelynn playfully whines.
“Kae no!” Sam attempts to push Kaelynn’s face down away from the phone, but she fights back, reaching one hand up to the phone and placing the other on Sam’s shoulder to gain some height.
“Why are you hiding it? Is it bad?”
“It- it’s not bad Kaelynn Is privacy ” Sam starts to struggle as Kaelynn attempts to climb him.
“Mooom Sam’s hiding something bad on his phone!” Kaelynn yells, sending Sam into distressed yelling mode. When their mother finally looks to see what the yelling was about, Sam is holding Kaelynn back as she attempts to grab his phone that was thrown onto the floor. She sighs and walks over to the phone as the two continue to argue. She bends down and picks it up, relieved it’s not shattered.
“Sam, please let go of your sister” Sam’s face drops as kaelynn’s forms into a grin.
“But-”
“Sam,” You can hear the exhaustion in her voice, so Sam reluctantly let go. “Thank you Sam, now Kaelynnn, head to your room.” Kaelynns face drops and tries to grab the phone, but she’s cut off by “No buts, get back to your room,” The tone is stern, both Sam and Kaelynn know better than to mess with their mom when she’s serious. Kaelynn Awkwardly smiles and quickly leaves as Sam starts walking to his room. “So, what was Kae talking about Sam?” Sam freezes, he can practically feel his spine crawl.
“She was just overreacting. I was texting someone and didn’t want her part of it,” Sam stumbles over his words, figuring out the best way to place it without it sounding bad or giving it away.
“Who were you texting?” Her tone is no longer serious but instead has a hint of interest. Sam silently mumbles under his breath and starts to fidget. “Come over to the couch,” Sam listens to his mother and sits down next to her and she hands back the phone to him. A stiff silence hangs in the air “So, is she a crush or girlfriend?” breaks the silence.
“Actually, their my, uh,” Sam tries to connect the words but just finds himself failing. Sam looks over to his mother who places her hand on his shoulder and gives him a warm smile. Sam smiles back and sighs, “ He’s my boyfriend.”
“I’m, so proud, of you Sam” She engulfs Sam in a hug. When the hug is released she ruffles Sam’s hair and smiles. Sam laughs, face slightly pink from embarrassment. “So, what's his name?”
“We promised to not tell anyone, he just, likes his privacy.” Sam laughs, shrugging. His mother simply sighs and leans back. Just as she was about to say something, Sam interrupts her, stating “Oh I can’t give you his real name but we have nicknames so I can tell you that,” His mother simply smiles and nods. “So he calls me “prince” and I call him “Knight” Sam receives an “aww” and a laugh in response. “I can explain it!” Sam quickly retorts, face red from embarrassment, causing her to laugh more. “Ok so he mentioned how he has to “protect me from doing stupid things” so I jokingly called him my knight, then he called me “his prince” and it, just, stuck,” Sam laughs after finishing his sentence. “Guess it’s still pretty cheesy.
“Love is like that Sam, but as long as you’re happy it doesn’t matter, does it?” Sam simply smiles
“Thanks, mom”

As Sam sits in his room reading a book for school when his phone goes off. Sam Closes the book and checks to see who was calling. As Sam read the name on the phone he smiled, “Knight <3” Sam quickly answers the call, dropping almost everything else.
“Hey Sam, sorry that I’m just now calling, I got busy”
“It’s alright dude, I actually got homework done” Sam starts walking back and fourth through his room and connected his phone to headphones so he can hear Miles better. “But, to make up for it you could take me on a date soon” Sam teases. Sam didn’t expect an actual response as they both agreed to keep their relationship to a minimal for a bit, just in case.
“Sure, what do would you like prince?” The tone had a hint of sass but is also genuine.
“Wait, really?” Sam is still processing Miles words as he speaks, now sitting on his bed
“I mean as long as you don’t expect a trip to paris, sure” Sam pauses, and then smiles, Miles agreed to take him on a date.
“I mean we can technically go to pa-”
“Don’t push it.” Sam laughs leading Miles to also laugh. “What do you think about in two weeks on a friday?” Sam can hear Mile searching something on his computer, it doesn’t surprise Sam that Miles already has a plan.
“Alright knighty. friday, two weeks from now.” Sam states, marking it on his calendar and sets reminders. It’s actually happening, Sam can’t believe it, yet it feels so real.
“Great, now that that’s taken care of, hows school going?” Sam groans in response, leading Miles to laugh. “Alright Sam, come on, I’ll help you through it.”
