Chapter Text
Jacaerys Velaryon was deemed heir to the Iron Throne mere minutes after being born. It made sense, he was Princess Rhaenyra's first-born.
Jalyssa Velaryon was born ten minutes after her twin brother. She should've been named heir to Driftmark, as is tradition. But Rhaenyra had other plans.
Rhaenyra Targaryen was never a dreamer. She was a dragonrider, deemed the youngest when she first mounted Syrax at age six. But just because she was never granted dreams in her childhood, didn't mean the gods wouldn't give her warnings of the future to come. Rhaenyra knew why a Targaryen must always sit the Iron Throne, Aegon's dream of a long night, of the end of the world of men. Her father passed down the prophecy after naming her heir, and she would do the same to her firstborn. Regardless of never having prophetic dreams, two months before giving birth, Rhaenyra had what could be described as a nightmare come to life.
She saw them, the dead being reanimated. She saw them kill everyone with no mercy. She also saw how they could only be killed by dragons, but the knew the world of men stood no chance. She was terrifed, she couldn't tell if it was dream her or just her own emotions, but she knew the end was near. They didn't have dragons, only three adolescents who tried their very best.
Rhaenyra was then shifted through different scenarios, nothing ever focusing but she knew these were the catalysts for the end of dragons. And the end of dragons would mean the end of the world as she knew it. Suddenly, everything stopped. She was surrounded by darkness, not being able to move.
"The house of the Dragon can not be taken down by outsiders," an ominous voice says, "only Dragons can defeat Dragons."
Rhaenyra tried to scream, to tell the voice to leave her alone, but its as if an outside force is making it impossible for her to do anything but breathe.
"With the fall of the house of the Dragon, the world follows suit. The world of men is in grave danger. Many people believe the Targaryen's and their dragons are a problem. We are merely saving them. No other house has our power, except one. I dreamt of this night. Our only other true ally are the Starks. Where the Starks go, the North will follow. You must establish allyship now, Rhaenyra. Lord Rickon Stark and his son Cregan are and will be your biggest allies in the coming years."
"What do you wish for me to do!?" Rhaenyra cries out, finally being able to do something else other than breathe.
"You are currently with babes, Rhaenyra Targaryen. Your first born will be a boy, your heir. It is your duty to guide him, tell him the song of ice and fire, tell him of Aegon's dream. He shall be raised as a good, noble and fierce king. Your second born, the babe's twin, will be a girl."
"Then she shall inherit Driftmark, as a second born to my husband, Laenor."
"No, this isn't her destiny. She is to be sent to the North, be housed by the Starks. This is a sacrifice you must make, Rhaenyra."
"A daughter?" Rhaenyra gasped. "I-I can't. You mustn't take her away from me, that is cruel!"
"As Targaryen's, it is our duty to guide the realm and keep it safe. With dragons, it is made possible. There was a reason Dany the Dreamer was the only one to be able to save her family from doom, and it is with her foreknowledge that we rule over the world of the Andals. It is with Aegon's Dream that we know that a Targaryen must always sit on the throne. No one knows of his Dream, except the Starks. Which is why it is your duty to send your babe to the North. She was born for this, Rhaenyra. It is a must."
Rhaenyra woke up crying. She didn't remember much of her dream, but she knew one thing clearly. She was already being departed with one of her children before they were even born.
In the next two months, the whole Keep was curious as to why sometimes the Princess of Dragonstone looked mournfully at her swollen stomach. Rhaenyra hadn't told anyone exactly what happened, she couldn't remember most of it herself, but a lot of people noticed the changes she had. She was more attentive in council meetings, even with the pains of pregnancy.
Everything made sense when Jacaerys and Jalyssa Velaryon were born.
