Chapter Text
Only the Beginning
"This place is so out of the way," he commented to himself. The low buzz of the radio let him know he was completely out of range for it to pick up any signal. About ten minutes ago, the road changed from bumpy gravel to pavement. That wasn't what he expected when going to visit an asylum on an isolated island. Law assumed it'd be gravel the whole way or just dirt.
I guess this is the result of a remote asylum. Not much is known about it to the people from the mainland. It's all handled by the government and other people. Just greedy scum wanting to be known for advancements. Not the well-being of people.
As he drove forward, a large gate stood in his way. So, he came to a stop beside the guard booth. Though, no one was there. That puzzled him. "You would think someone would be out here. I mean, it's an asylum filled with dangerous people. Why wouldn't it be heavily guarded? But no one is out here. Something's wrong."
Turning his car off, Law sat back in his seat. He turned his attention to the badge attached to the visor above his head. Trafalgar Law. Exclusive journalist. Took me ages to be recognized as one. After I left my job as a doctor. This one is less stressful.
Then, his attention changed to the folder in his passenger seat. Law eyed it for a moment before picking it up. Taking a deep breath, he opened it to read the contents of the email he was sent by a friend that worked there. His worry grew as he read the words.
Law,
Some really fucked up shit is happening here. They're doing indescribably horrible things to the patients here. I know they're criminals and all. But this is just... inhumane. I fear for my own life at this point. They're making me fix the machines. I'm afraid of what will happen if I don't. Please, if you can, you need to get this place shut down. The people need to know what's happening here. This place needs to be exposed for its horrible practices and for the demonic experiments they're doing. I know they're going to track this email. So, if you don't hear from me by tomorrow, I'm either dead or worse... part of the experiments. Please, help-
And the email ended there. His friend hadn't even been able to finish typing his sentence before sending it. Law knew he sent it in a hurry at that point. But his words struck concern into his being. It raised so many questions. Though, he hoped they'd be answered with his investigation.
Replacing the paper back into the folder, he set it back down in the seat before picking up the camcorder. It was a newer model with night vision. Law had been able to buy it with the money he'd been making with his journalist job and the amount he saved up from his previous job.
Opening the camera, he checked the settings and to see how good the night vision was. Looking through it, he was able to see in the dark perfectly fine. In the distance, he swore he could see large vehicles parked outside the front doors of the asylum.
"Well, here we go." Law put it down before opening his jacket to place the camcorder inside for easy reach when he needed to film. Taking another deep breath, he opened his car door before exiting. The chill of the autumn air brought out a shiver. He hoped things would go well. There was no telling what would happen if he was caught.
Carefully, he made his way over to the side gate. Pushing at it, he was surprised to find it unlocked. What's going on? Wouldn't they have higher security than this? Anyone could just pull up and walk in. And the Donquixote cooperation is supposed to be a high-tech security-based company. That's why they partnered with Grandline Asylum. To keep the patients inside.
Slowly, he made his way toward the entrance. That's when he could make out what kind of vehicles were stationed out front. His eyes widened as he stopped to stare at them. It made no sense to him. Especially when there appeared to be a lack of security.
The vehicles outside were armored ones. The same ones the military used when in combat. That meant something serious was going down on the inside. Law was sure of it. And he needed to get in to see what it was. It could be what I'm looking for. If the military is involved, then shit really is getting bad in there.
Walking up to the door, he reached out and grabbed the handle. Turning it, he found that it was locked. Not ideal for him. But he could figure out another way inside. Law was well known for getting into places to get the best pictures for his reports. Though, breaking into an asylum would put him at a disadvantage if he was caught.
Still, he didn't let that deter him. Choosing to check the left side first, Law abandoned the front doors. Plus, going in through the front wasn't a good idea in the first place. He wasn't supposed to be there. So, it'd get him captured extremely easily if he went through there.
As he made it over to the gate at that side, he found a part that was bent up. As if someone had already tried to escape. But there was a problem with that. The island they were on was about a hundred miles from regular civilization. It'd been pure luck that an independent ferryman got him and his car across. Law paid him a lot.
But he would've seen someone leave if they had. Yet, he hadn't seen a single would since he arrived. Yet, that didn't stop him. Instead, he used that opening to get inside. Law crouched down and crawled through to get to the other side. The bent poles scraped across his clothed back a little. Though, he ignored it for now.
Once he was on the other side, Law stood up and dusted himself off. "That was a little difficult. But I'm through. Now, to figure out what's going on. I'm curious." He checked around to see if he could spot a good entrance.
To his right was a door with a light shining over it. Shrugging, he chose to check it. As he got closer to it, he stopped for a second. That... That sounded like footsteps on the other side. Maybe it's open. Could someone open it for me?
Getting to it, he grabbed the knob. But it wouldn't turn. It was either locked or jammed. Neither one was ideal. Law pushed to see if it would budge. But that was met with failure. A sigh left him as he left it. The footsteps were gone, and no one let him in. So, he had to find another way inside.
Backing off from that door, he went to check the windows to see if one would open. Law got used to breaking into places for the best scoops. So, finding a way inside wasn't that difficult. All he had to do was see if a window happened to be loose.
Stepping back, he looked the building up and down. There had to be at least forty or so rooms. It loomed over the entire area. It wasn't a surprise that it was hidden away on an isolated island. Though, that made it even more ominous.
Then, his eyes landed on what appeared to be a broken window on the second floor. "Bingo. That's my ticket inside," Law whispered to himself. Though, I have to climb. Guess it was a good idea to workout in my free time.
Walking up to the window on the first floor, he examined it to see if he could, indeed, crawl up to the other window. It seemed to be an easy way to get up. So, he took it. Law wasn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth. And he wanted to get inside.
Turning his head to the sky, clouds began to cover the full moon. The scent of rain filled the air. The weather promised rain that night. And he wanted to be indoors instead of getting drenched in a downpour. That wasn't ideal for him at the moment.
That's when he decided he needed to get inside. Placing his hands on the top of the window before him, he began his ascension to the second window. He made sure to only grab the parts of the wall that were sturdy enough to hold his weight.
This is not something I normally do. But I wasn't expecting to have to climb a wall to get inside here. Though, I wasn't expecting to go right through the front door, either. So, I guess this is better than not getting inside at all. Though, I'm worried about those military vehicles being here.
Continuing on his way, Law, finally, grabbed the ledge of the window. Then, he hauled himself up. It tired him out just to get inside. It'd been a while since he last had to climb inside a place for his job. But he knew it wouldn't be the last.
As soon as he rolled into the room, the light buzzed before cutting out completely. Law hadn't even been able to look around before it happened. But he took a breather for a second before whipping out his camcorder. He switched on the night vision.
Once he got it turned on, he brought the camera up to his face. His eyes widened when he saw the smears of dark liquid across a broken table, the walls, and what appeared to be a broken TV. The heavy scent of copper was in the air.
"Is... Is that bl-blood?" he questioned aloud to himself. The smell reminded him of his days as a surgeon. He shook his head to disperse those memories. It was all in the past. Now, he was a reporter for serious matters in the world.
Rising to his feet, he made his way to the door. A light shone from the cracked door. It would save him batteries to stay in the light as long as he could. Though, he had an inkling things weren't okay inside the asylum. Blood being smeared in the room was a dead giveaway.
Making his way out the door, he looked both ways down the hall. Not a single soul in sight. But there were objects strewn about the place. Law assumed the second floor was more of an office space than for holding patients. Papers were scattered across the floor, pots of plants were broken and knocked over, other wrecked and smashed objects littered the hall, and he could see a splintered door in the distance. That wasn't a good sign. A shiver of fear ran down his spine.
Slowly, he crept out of the room before tiptoeing down the hall. The silence was almost deafening. Law swore that if a sudden loud noise occurred, his eardrums would burst. Even his footsteps on the carpet were almost too loud.
As he went past doors, he checked them to see if they would open. Law made sure to be as quiet as possible. But most of them wouldn't open. They all seemed to be locked. He guessed there was a reason for that. Yet, he didn't like the implications it meant for him.
Then, he got to the end of the hall. But he was at a standstill. There were so many things piled up, blocking his path to the other side. That didn't help him at all. I need to get around this. But I don't see a way across or around. Damn. did I hit a dead end already?
Turning to the door beside him, he tried that one. To his utter surprise, it opened. That was new. But he didn't think much about it. Instead, he walked inside. The lights were out in there. So, he brought up his camera.
That's when he stopped in his tracks. I think I'm going to be sick. His eyes widened in horror as he stared at the situation before him. It was easily the worst scene he'd ever had the displeasure of viewing with his own eyes. Even worse than when he was a doctor.
Around the room were dismembered bodies. Blood, legs, arms, torsos, organs, other bodily fluids, and even heads lay about the room in random spots. But there was a pile in the corner. And a guy in military armor had two stakes driven through his torso, pinning him to the wall. No one could survive that. So, it was clear he was dead.
But he wasn't expecting to see such carnage in his life. Someone had hacked the people around him to bits. Yet, he pressed forward. Law made sure to step around the body parts as he made his way to the door on the other side. But the wet squelches of him stepping in blood and on some tissue made him cringe every time.
When he was a foot away from the military man, the guy gasped. Law screamed and almost fell backward into a pile of arms from the sudden action. The man gasped as he looked directly at him. He used night vision to see him.
"Y-You..." he started in a pained, hoarse voice. "You have... haah... to get... ugh... out of h-here." Law's eyes widened even more. "It's... It's not... haah... safe. L-Leave as... guh... soon as y-you... ngh... c-can."
As soon as he got that out, Law heard him give one last gasp before he went completely limp. He concluded that he finally gave out. That didn't bode well for him. It meant something horrible and downright dangerous was going on there. But he didn't think it would be that easy to escape. It was already a miracle he got in.
Choosing to listen to the dead man, Law swallowed the lump in his throat before heading for the door. His life wasn't worth it anymore. Not when specially trained people were being murdered as well. Law didn't sign up for that. If this was the situation, he was better off escaping.
As he pushed the door open, Law checked both sides again. On the other side of the area, he saw a large person enter a room. He paled at the thought of it being the person who tore apart the people in that room. His body shook with dread. The danger was real at that moment.
Carefully, he left the room. He made sure not to make any noise. Law didn't want to alert the person to his presence. I would only spell trouble for him. Plus, he wouldn't be able to fight the other based on how large they were. That wasn't a possibility. So, sneaking was the only solution.
But that was the only direction he could go in. The other way was a dead end. As he passed by the door that the other went in, Law kept his eyes on it. He didn't trust that the person wouldn't come bursting out. His heart pounded in his chest as he shuffled past it.
Once he was on the other side of the door, he checked the area for somewhere to go. There were other doors there. But there appeared to be stairs on the other side of some piled-up things. The good thing was that there was a part he could shimmy through. That was the only way to get to the stairs.
Looking back to the door, he decided it was a better option than garnering that person's attention by checking the other doors. If they were locked, it could give away that he was there. So, getting to the stairs sounded better.
Getting to the spot he could squeeze past, Law checked to see if it was sturdy enough. After, he started to shimmy past. His anxiety grew with each passing second. It was possible he would get hurt at any moment.
And it came true. As soon as he was halfway through the space, someone grabbed his arm. Law screamed as he was yanked toward them. They moved to hold him by the front of his shirt. He stared down at the person as they held him up.
The man was large and looked pissed. He began to hyperventilate as the guy glared at him. "Fucking animals," he growled at him. Law held onto the hands around his shirt. The other had dark skin, piercing yellow eyes, and long black hair.
Before he could study him anymore, the guy threw him. Law's back collided with the glass as he broke it and fell to the first floor. He yelped as it happened. But he couldn't stop himself from plummeting to the ground.
As he landed on the floor, a grunt was ripped out of him as his vision swam before him. He began to go in and out of it after hitting his head on the hard, laminated floor. So, he couldn't move that well. He couldn't even see properly.
One of the times he regained consciousness, he saw a person bending over him. He couldn't make out who he was. But he heard his voice. "I know who you are," they said. It was obvious it was a man. But he couldn't tell him anything. "Don't move too much. You're safe here. I'll move you to a better place. Don't push yourself. You'll be fine."
Even as the man said that, Law still struggled to stay awake. Though, it wasn't working. He was losing consciousness again. Again, he blacked out. Law hoped what he said was true. It would be worrying if he wasn't in a safe area. But he would have to see when he could stay awake longer than a few seconds. That would have to wait, though. What have I gotten myself into? was his last thought before he lost consciousness again.
This was an idea I had for a while. By the way, I need more pairings. All of them will be paired with Law. So, please, don't hesitate to give your opinion. All ideas are accepted. I will be adding those pairings to the list when they are suggested to me. I need about 32 more pairings. Also, more tags might be added as I think of more things. I love you all greatly and wish you a cracking day. Tatty-bye!
