Work Text:
The rebel base was quiet when Cassian arrived from his latest (and tiring) mission in the middle of the night. It was sucessful - they got the intel they were looking for and no major casualties happened - and he was fine except for a few bruises on his face and on his knuckles after fighting with some troopers.
He wanted to clean up and go to sleep but he needed to check on Jyn first because he knew he wouldn’t be able to rest before knowing if she was okay. He had many nightmares during the weeks he was away and it was always about losing her and being cut for any form of contact with anyone outside the mission made him terribly anxious.
When he was approaching her room, he suddenly thought it wasn’t a good idea to go there: it was too late and she was probably resting and he didn’t want to bother her. But even the idea of seeing Jyn looking grumpy and sleepy made him feel relieved - he just needed to see her because he missed her painfully (not that he would ever tell her that, at least not with this sincerity).
He arrived at the door of her room and knocked softly three times (as he always did, so she would know it was him) and waited for her to open it. After a few seconds with no answer, he decided to go to his own room as he thought she was probably asleep. However, when he had just turned his back he heard her sleepy voice saying his name.
“Cassian? What are you doing here?” She asked while rubbing her eyes softly, getting used to the cold light from the corridor contrasting with the deep darkness of her little room. He just looked at her and smiled, so happy to hear her voice again and his heart skipped a few beats with the sigh of her with her messy hair and wearing one of his shirts that she stole a while ago.
He got lost in his thoughts and forgot to say anything for a few moments (she really had this effect on him, of making him get lost on her eyes and forgetting everything around him except for her presence) when she spoke again. “Get in, this corridor is so damn freezing”.
She entered the room waiting for him to do the same and he stepped inside and closed the door. Once they were inside, she turned on her little lamplight - a little gift he made for her a while ago - and sounded so concerned when she saw his bloody hands and spoke again. “What the hell have you done, Cassian? You really can get yourself out of trouble, can you?”
He just smiled at her comment and replied with amusement “I’m happy to see you too, Jyn. And you are the one to talk about getting in trouble right? You have so much experience in this area”. His comment made her laugh softly and she opened one of her drawers looking for something while answering “You know I’m always happy to see you, but I also worry about the bad decisions you make when I’m not around”.
She finally found what she was looking for - a small medkit - and gestured to him to sit down in the bed after grabbing the little box and he followed suit. “Where did you get it?” he asked with curiosity and trying to lighten the mood.
“The medkit? Cinta gave it to me a while ago… she told me she always have some stuff with her because she have a stubborn one by her side who likes to get injured. Just like me.” Her words were soft but she still sounded concerned.
“I didn’t mean to worry you… it's nothing much, just a few scratches and bruises. I’ll survive, dear. And you're right, I tend to make better decisions when you are around”. Even if his tone was teasing, his words were true - they made a good team and she made him hope about something after this all was over - but he couldn't tell her right now.
She seemed to be a little less tense after his comments when she replied almost playfully “Yes, I know it, Major. Now give me your hand, let’s fix this mess you made”. He didn’t think much about this, just did what she asked. He had no idea when it was the last time someone took care of him like this, with such gentleness and not expecting anything back. He almost felt overwhelmed by the sensation of her small and callused hands cleaning his wounds with so much care, like he was someone she treasured.
“It may hurt a little, I’m sorry” she said so quietly, almost like a whisper, and he just nodded. She finished cleaning his knuckles and bandaged his wounds very carefully so as not to hurt him and said “Now let’s clean your face, shall we?”
They were sitting so close that he could see the brown shades in her beautiful green eyes and again he felt like nothing else mattered at the moment and like he could get lost on her gaze, just like I’m the day he first saw her. He mentally cursed himself for acting so clueless around her sometimes and just cleared his throat before saying “Yes, let’s do it”.
She adjusted herself on the bed so they were fully facing each other and grabbed one of the antiseptic wipes to clean the bruises on his face, just as carefully as she did with his hands. She cleaned the little wound just above his left eyebrow, then the one on his right cheek and stopped for a few moments after finally cleaning the one on his bottom lip that disappeared in his beard, as if she was unsure of it. She gently lifted his stubbled chin with two of her fingers to have a better look at the scratch and whipped it clean, even gentler than before, almost a ghost of a touch. If the lights of the room were a bit brighter, he would see Jyn’s cheeks getting a little redder at that moment and would have seen how her hands were trembling a little from being this close to him.
“All done” she said quickly, like she was embarrassed all of sudden. She got up to put the box back in her drawer and when she turned back to him, while he was still sitting on her bed, he grabbed her left hand and pressed a soft kiss on it. It caught them both by surprise but he tried to play it cool “Thank you so much, my savior” he tried to sound amused as to mask how he was really feeling at the moment. “How do you want me not to be in trouble if I’ll have you to take such good care of me?” he said before pressing another kiss to her hand.
She decided to match his playful tone and got closer to him before saying “You know very well that you don’t need to be hurt to have my attention, right? So please, stop being so reckless or the next time it happens you’ll leave this room with even more bruises than when you arrived”.
He just could laugh at her comment and quickly got on his feet, still holding her hand and added softly “Seriously, thank you Jyn, and I’m sorry for waking you up but I couldn’t sleep before knowing you were okay.” She didn’t answer right away, instead she got on her tip toes and kissed his non-bruised cheek before saying “I’m always glad to see you, Cassian, no matter what.”
He just smiled shyly at her before kissing her forehead and saying his goodbyes, wishing her a good night, feeling a little disappointed with himself for not saying everything he wanted to tell her. He arrived at his room feeling lighter and happier than he felt in weeks just for seeing her and for the reminder that as long as he had her in his life, they would always have a home in each other.
