Painful Consequences

Summary:

Book 2 AU: Varrick learns his actions have bigger consequences then he could've ever imagined.

Chapter 2: Kuvira pays for her crimes post Ruins of the Empire.

Notes:

Authors notes: I don’t own Legend of Korra, if I did, the LoK comics would’ve been different and the show would’ve had more episodes per season. All I own are my original characters who are in this story, Mr Yao and Cain Sato.

This is a story idea I came up with after a long conversation with my cousin while we had lunch together a few weeks ago, about some problems he had with Legend of Korra. He had made some good point about how Varrick never properly answered for his crimes in Book 2 and that he needed to answer for them. After watching the show Moonknight an idea came to me.

Warning Varrick fans, read at your own risk.

Well, that’s enough of an author’s notes. On with the fanfic.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Chapter 1 Varrick pays for his sins

Chapter Text

Republic City Prison

Iknik Blackstone Varrick had great plans and all of them had unraveled around him quickly.

He had wanted to escalate the Water Tribe Civil War, getting the United Republic involved, steal Future Industries from Asami Sato to make money and get rid of a business rival. All of it went wrong and now Varrick was locked up in Republic City prison and not even in the cell he had built for him, by the company who made the prison.

It was argued at his hearing that allowing the man who tried to kidnap the President of the United Republic to be in a cell, living in luxury would show that the justice system was corrupt, so Varrick was put in an ordinary cell, with cell mates from the Northern Water Tribe who brutally attacking the man who planned to give the rebels in the South with weapons in the civil war and now he was in a wheelchair with a broken leg and bruised ribs.

He was without Zhu-li who was locked up in a women’s prison and without the means to escape, Varrick was trapped in this prison with no way out.

Suddenly Varrick was pulled out of his thoughts of what went wrong, when a guard grabbed the wheelchair from behind, pulling Varrick away from his lunch in the mess hall saying “You have a visitor.”

The guard pushed Varrick out of the mess hall and whistled a tune as he led down a hallway. It was then Varrick saw this guard wasn’t taking him to the visitor’s area, as he led Varrick right past it and ignored it when Varrick pointed this out to the guard, who he assumed must be a new guy who only just started and got lost.

It was then he saw the bodies of two dead prison guards on the floor with slit throats near a back entrance. Varrick for the first time in many years was now terrified as the still whistling guard led him outside to a waiting Limo Satomobile that was all gold.

Varrick was shoved inside the limo landing on the backseats, as the whistling guard, shut the door behind him and kicked the wheelchair away before going back inside the prison, his job was done.

The limo sped off as soon as Varrick was inside. Varrick looked up and saw another man inside the limo sitting in a chair facing him, the who was pale skinned with golden eyes wore a red suit jacket and had an expensive pocket watch in his hands and looked at Varrick with a smile saying “Ah, Mr Varrick. It’s nice to meet you. I am Mr Kwan Yao. I am the head of the Triple Threat Triads and known as Red Flame, I came all the way here from the Fire Nation for one reason to meet you, face to face.”

Varrick confused at this said “I thought Lightning Bolt Zolt was the leader of the Triple Threats?”

Mr Yao laughed and explained “He is just middle management here in the United Republic. I’m the true power behind the Triple Threats. Now you Varrick have made things very difficult for me and my organization. You hired some of my men here in Republic City, to bomb the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Centre while that peaceful protest of the North’s invasion of the South was going on, endangering innocent lives in the process. That got my organization back home branded a terrorist organization!”

Varrick backed up at the man’s outburst as a fireball lit in his hands, that was blood red, before the flame was put out, as Mr Yao composed himself before he continued “Next you hired my men to steal shipments from young Asami Sato, all so you could steal her company from her and you framed the crimes of my men on a police officer, after first trying to bribe him and imply threats against his brother and Asami Sato for refusing the offer. Getting him locked up in prison.”

Mr Yao looked at Varrick with anger and explained “That has brought a lot of heat of my men here in Republic City and then having my men help in a kidnap plot against the President. Worst of all. You did all of this, using my men in your schemes without asking my permission. If you want to use my men, or go after police with my men. You need my permission first. There are rules you know; you can’t have crime without law and order.”

Varrick looking out the window of the limo and seeing that they were well outside Republic City now asked with fear “So what are you going to do, kill me and dump my body for the birds?”

Mr Yao laughed before saying “No. You are so short sighted that you have no ideas who you have pissed off with your recent actions in Republic City.”

Mr Yao knocked on the window three times, the limo began to stop in the desert as he said to the confused Varrick “Meet my friend. Cain Sato. Asami Sato’s uncle from her mother’s side of the family.”

The window blocking a look at the driver was lowered as a man who with pale skin, green eyes, with a scarred face turned around and looked at Varrick with pure rage, before getting a dagger and saying “Today’s the day you die.”

Varrick started to beg for his life, but that was cut short, as the man smiled as he threw 3 daggers one after the other at Varrick, all at his heart killing him instantly.

Cain Sato looked at Mr Yao and said with a smile “Good work.”

Cain got out from the driver’s seat as Yao also got out of the limo and took off the jacket he was wearing, as Cain did the same.

Cain Sato put back on his red jacket and got back his family pocket watch, as his driver Yao put back on his jacket and black cap saying with big smile “I should’ve been in theatre. We fooled him just fine.”

Cain metal bent the daggers he had into liquid and put them into a container he kept in the limo, before wiping off the make-up that his scars were, best work money can buy.

Varrick’s body was dumped out of the limo and left for the vultures, as Cain Sato was driven back to Republic City and to his waiting boat to get him back home to the Fire Nation, before his niece learned he had been in the city.

He didn’t want her to know what he just done. Once word got out Varrick escaped prison, if she had seen him. He knew that Asami would put the pieces together and figure out what happened. She was very smart, just like her mother.

Cain Sato remembered when his niece was born, he held the newborn baby girl in his arms, smiling at her and at her parents, seeing his brother-in-law Hiroshi so happy and his sister Yasuko overjoyed with emotion at seeing her daughter.

Cain vowed then and there that he would protect her, if anyone harmed Asami Sato, they’d answer to him like Varrick just did with his life.

There were painful consequences for crossing the Sato family. People needed to learn that lesson. Like those who killed his sister, that was the first time Cain took on the alias of Red Flame though his employees, he used money to learn who killed his sister and killed them, making sure the criminal underworld knew of Red Flame and to fear it. Becoming a feared name among the criminals and a mystery to law enforcement.

Varrick’s assistant Zhu-Li who was a willing accomplice to Varrick’s many crimes also paid for her actions, she was stabbed to death in the women’s prison by Triads who did it on the orders of Mr Red Flame and also had them pass on a message to their gangs, Avatar Korra and her friends, especially Asami Sato were off limits on pain of death, by order of Mr Red Flame.

Cain Sato would ensure his niece was protected, from the shadows and get payback on anyone who harmed her.
