Work Text:
Izuku didn't want to admit that he was nervous about meeting with Ochako and Tenya. It wasn't going to be anything bad. They were his friends . So what if Ochako had been jumpy when she told him to meet them after class or refused to explain what was going on? Who cares that Tenya had just determinedly set his jaw and curtly told Izuku to wait when he tried to wheedle information out of him? What did it matter that neither of his best friends would meet his eye all day? They were friends .
But that didn't stop Izuku's heart from pounding heavily in his chest as he approached the library. As expected, Ochako and Tenya were already waiting for him at the table they always used. He found himself hovering at the door and watching them for a moment. Ochako suddenly clapped her hands over her mouth to quiet her giggling as Tenya just frowned in confusion, and Izuku felt a smile curling over his lips. His heart squeezed painfully and he found himself thinking that he'd miss this before he shook the thought away. They were friends.
"Deku-kun, there you are," Ochako beamed as he approached. He gave her a little smile as he took his customary place. "Tenya and I have something for you!"
Tenya made a slightly disgruntled noise, but nodded and smiled. "Generally this is done with a bit more ceremony, but I'll admit I'm too eager to wait as well."
Ochako thrust her hands forward and unclipped them to reveal a metal circle a little smaller than her palm. It was mostly pink with a navy blue center and two dots along the edge. Tenya did the same, showing a silver chevron with two sets of five holes on either side. "Ta-da!"
Izuku furrowed his brow and looked between them. "Um, what are they?"
Ochako's smile dimmed a bit, but she didn't look any less happy. Instead of the blinding joy of before, it had softened into something gentler. "It's something we made in class," she explained, running her finger along the edge of it. "This week we had a guest come in. She's a mage and she taught us a very special skill we can use to help Keyblade bearers. From the moment she told us about it, I knew I wanted to make one for you."
So it's something to do with my Keyblade . Izuku reached forward to take the pink circle, but hesitated just before he touched it. Ochako gave hin an encouraging nod and pushed her hands a bit forward. Izuku picked it up, and for the first time noticed the length of sturdy chain and the clip attached to it. He held it up in front of his face, giving it a thorough look over before everything clicked into place. His eyes widened and his breath hitched. He looked wildly between his two friends. "Is this- Are these-"
"They're Keychains," Tenya confirmed as Izuku shakily took his Keychain as well.
"They, um, they might not work," Ochako said hesitantly, suddenly seeming a lot shyer than she had moments before. "It's a process that requires a lot of work and practice. Uwabami said that ours looked good, but there's no real guarantee."
"It's also heavily dependent on the bonds between the wielder and the person giving it to them," Tenya said seriously. "Even a perfectly made Keychain won't work if it's not gifted by a friend."
"Then I'm positive these will work," Izuku said firmly clutching the Keychains to his chest. "There's no way they can't if they came from you two!"
Ochako's cheeks bloomed pink, and her smile crinkled her eyes. "I sure hope they do!"
"Let's find out!"
"Not in here," Tenya hissed, grabbing Izuku's wrist before he could summon Deku. One look from the librarian was more than enough to back him up.
"R-Right! Let's go outside."
As soon as they stepped foot out of the building, Izuku had summoned his Keyblade and was reaching for the Keychain Ochako had made, but she grabbed his arm with a yelp. "Wait! Do Tenya's first!" she said, flushing bright red.
Izuku raised an eyebrow at her, but looked to Tenya for confirmation. At his nod, Izuku clipped the Keychain on. There was a bright Flash of light, and when Izuku blinked the spots out of his vision he almost squeaked. "Oh my god," he grinned, swinging his new Keyblade from side to side. "This is amazing. " The new Keyblade was much longer than Deku, a pair gleaming silver pipes made up the blade while a shape similar to Tenya's helmet served as the hilt. It also felt somehow lighter and stronger than Deku, and cut through the air quicker.
"Uwabami did say that this Keyblade might not be well-suited for magic," Tenya warned, but he was still beaming with pride.
"Okay, do mine now," Ochako chimed in, back to her earlier giddiness. Izuku did as she said and when the light cleared, she squealed. "It worked!"
This time the Keyblade was about as long as Deku, but in return Izuku could practically feel the influx of magic flowing through his veins. He let out a shaky breath and lifted the Keyblade above his head to perform an easy down swing. But something weird happened, and Izuku found himself floating through the air in a gentle backflip. With both his feet on the ground, he gave Ochako a wild look. "What was that ?"
Ochako grinned sheepishly and scratched her cheek. "Um, sometimes the Keychains give wielders abilities based on the person who made them."
Izuku blinked for a moment then grinned. "That's amazing. I wonder if Tenya's would make me faster."
"There's only one way to find out."
Izuku felt his heart skip a beat as he looked between his two friends who were looking at him with matching knowing looks. "Let's go train."
