He's In Love

Summary:

This boy used to be a faraway dream for him. What started as admiration turned into affection and then happiness. Yunho couldn’t believe they started out as strangers to neighbours, and now he has him in his arms.

Sometimes, the stories do write itself.

Yunho had everything since he was a child. He’s got loving parents, few but good friends, good education and many hobbies his parents were happy to support. Despite how much he receives, he tries to be as giving as possible. Yunho doesn’t play naïve though. No matter how many people surrounds him, not many of them has ever gotten close; physically nor emotionally.

So when someone did, Yunho was left wondering who Song Mingi was.

Notes:

After 5 (embarrassing) months, IT’S DONE! First off, I AM SO SORRY FOR MAKING YOU WAIT. It was a terrible mistake of mine to publish ‘He’s a Sweetheart’ and promise a part 2 a few weeks before I was about to be bombarded by school work.

Sorry again.

I tried to make this into an independent fic but it was really impossible so if you haven't yet, I encourage you to read He's a Sweetheart first. Yunho's POV was heavily contextual and I tried to fill in certain gaps and I don't know if I succeeded, so please be kind to me.

DISCLAIMER: This fic is not meant to be taken seriously nor does it intend to bring any harm to anyone. This is in no way representing Ateez or the members in anyway.

LASTLY, HAPPY COMEBACK! GO CHECK OUT GUERRILLA

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The first time Yunho saw Mingi, was during the opening ceremony; standing at the back of the line, near the entrance. His hair was fiery red and shorter compared to his grey and longer hair now. Yunho didn’t actually remember him until they had their first class together in General Mathematics. Mingi didn’t particularly stand out but he didn’t fade at the background either. He was just a normal college freshman like any other.

Mingi has this endearing personality about him that had professors become fond of him, often happy with his participation and class inputs. It didn’t help that he was also a good student, attentive at questions, cooperative, and knows when to ask for clarifications. Yunho honestly thought nothing of it. Mingi wasn’t the only favored student. There are a lot more in their class that was smarter and better than him.

Mingi didn’t stand out. He was just a normal college student.

Mingi wasn’t anyone special.

That was what Yunho believed… until it wasn’t.

Yunho didn’t know where that reserved kid in class had gone. All he saw that day was a genius in the court. Mingi’s presence had been loud and intense. He was one of the taller players but his weight didn’t seem to drag his movements at all. He was quick to move and even quicker to think. Every cheer and yell that came from his mouth had Yunho turning, eyes wide and heart pounding, drawn. Yunho watched the group of first years try scoring a single point, paying special attention to how well Mingi blocked the opposing spikers and shut them down. That rally was the longest among the batch solely because Mingi had been good at leading his fellow blockers and prevented the gap from increasing since their spikers couldn’t get pass the senior blockers.

Yunho can feel the tension and frustration filling the air and yet, as he watched Mingi, he realized Mingi wasn’t even remotely upset. Every time the opponent scores, he just pouts and then moves on. Yunho was confused. Mingi had been nothing but encouraging to his fellow first years despite the playful jeers. He gave them tips for openings and easy to remember hand signals to keep them focused and coordinated. What really caught Yunho off guard however, was when there was a loud smack that resounded in the court, the ball bouncing from the floor up to the wall and then continued to roll away when it lost its momentum.

For a moment, there was stunned silence.

The first thing they heard was Mingi’s yell and within a split second, the spiker who scored was getting smothered and congratulated like he won the biggest contest there was. It was one point. Just one point, but it seemed to have boost the team morale. Mingi was the loudest about it. That was probably the first time Yunho had seen him smile so big, showing his uneven teeth and boxy smile; a tall giant bouncing on his feet out of excitement and joy for an achievement he didn’t even do himself.

They lost, of course. What can a newly formed group do against a more coordinated and experienced team? It was a devastating 4-15 score and yet Mingi looked at the score board with pride and squeezed his teammates’ shoulder and pat their backs. He was out of breath and covered in sweat. His arms were red from taking all the hit, knees scraped and covered in bruises and yet- and yet he smiled the brightest and stood proud as if he won. That was when Yunho thought that Mingi was the coolest person he’s ever seen.

As if feeling eyes on him, Mingi turned to his direction and their eyes met. Yunho remembered feeling nervous that very moment, especially when Mingi stared at him in wonder before looking away when he got called.

He remembered the relief.

He remembered the curiosity.

Yunho was called by then, to prepare for his own tryouts in the basketball team. He remembered how hard he played that day, so hard that his body and muscles ached by the next day. He couldn’t help it though. Watching the volleyball team play riled him up a little and made him want to show off, trying to convince himself that he was only doing it to show he was capable and not to impress a certain someone who decided to stay and watch-

“How do I look?”

Yunho looks over, a smile already forming on his face. Mingi was waiting for him eagerly, his cheeks lightly squished by the thick and fluffy pink scarf around his neck. He grinned and gave a little pose, cupping both his cheeks, tilting his head aside and fluttering his eyes playfully.

“Do I look cute?” he asked with a cutesy pout.

Yunho chuckled and shook his head. He walked over to the other man and fixed his askew glasses, pinching his cheek just because he couldn’t resist. “There. Looks even better.” Mingi beams at him, his crooked bunny teeth peeking between his lips and Yunho could only sigh, heart warm and melting.

Mingi took off the scarf and hang it back on the rack. “Do you think Hongjoong will love it?” he asked, staring at Yunho over his shoulder.

“Definitely,” Yunho grinned, smiling even more when Mingi shared a devious smirk at him.

They continued to walk around the department store, picking gag gifts for their friend’s upcoming birthday. Frankly, this is not how Yunho imagined he would spend his Saturday now that he doesn’t have to worry about games and practice. Basketball season was finally over and winter break will start in about a month or so. From his last game, Yunho obtained an ankle injury and was placed in bed rest for three days before he can attend classes again. During those days, Mingi took care of him; helped him ice his ankle, remind him to take his medicines, and even walked him to classes just to make sure he doesn’t push himself.

Two weeks later, he was finally and completely healed. In order to celebrate, the first thing he did was ask Mingi out on a date. It was also his way of thanking the younger man for looking out for him. So, here they are in COEX Starfield Mall- their date turning into shopping spree of finding Hongjoong a good birthday gift. Yunho didn’t mind though. Mingi kind of looked excited to pick a gift for their grumpy senior friend.

“What do you think?” Yunho asked as he held up a book towards the younger man.

“For Hongjoong?” He asked, and Yunho nodded.

He turned the book towards him again, a pout on his lips as he read the cover. It was a book about reformed clothing and modern fashion; perfect for the Fashion and Design major senior. Yunho doesn’t really know much about fashion but Hongjoong loves it and it passionate about his work. Though frankly speaking, he isn’t exactly sure if he should buy more books or art materials for him. He expressed his concern to Mingi, who eyed his apprehensive state.

Mingi pursed his lips and hummed, eyes going around the brightly lit and spacious library as he contemplated. Yunho followed his gaze and eyed the 13-meter high bookshelf at the very heart of the mall, an array of various print media lined in every shelf. Yunho wasn’t one to read books, but heck, even he is amazed by the 50,000 books displayed in this very library. No wonder Mingi loved to spend his past time here whenever he can.

“What do you think is more useful to him?” Mingi asked, snapping Yunho out of his stupor.

Yunho pursed his lips and hummed thoughtfully. “Well, he likes to read but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have any more room for his books.” He immediately recalled the elder’s messy desk filled with cut up fabric, rumpled papers, and hastily stacked books.

He also remembered how he complained about the weight of his books when he moved out of the dorms and into a new apartment he rented with his roommate, which happened to be Seonghwa- Mingi’s senior friend from the Interior Design department.

“Then I think a sketchbook and charcoal pencils would be good.” Mingi then continued reading through the book he was holding, his features relaxed. He chuckled and peered at Yunho over his gray fringes before going back to his book. “I’m sure he would want an outlet for his inspirations and ideas. An endless amount of paper will probably help him get through it,” he casually said and flipped on another page.

Yunho fell mum afterwards, too drunk on admiration to even make a move. His eyes trailed from Mingi’s messy grey hair, all rumpled and some fringes falling over his eyes framed by his thin gold glasses. His gaze was cast down, soft and tension free, finger busy running over the print on the paper and unaware of the eyes on him. Yunho swallowed thickly when his attention zeroed on Mingi’s lips, thin and a little chapped and dry, tinge with lines of red from all the nibbling it received. It looked sore… and Yunho may have been 25% the reason of that… or maybe 50%… or maybe even more.

He can’t be blamed though. Mingi’s lips are very addicting to bite into and although he gets the receiving end of endless complaints and grumbles, it was very worth it. It’s always worth it.

They continued to roam around for a bit more, jumping from store to stores and spending hefty time by the food stalls at the center square. It was nearing closing time and the stalls tend to give food discount they couldn’t just pass up.

In the end, Mingi bought a bucket hat for Hongjoong. Yunho, on the other hand, bought two sketchpads and a set of charcoal pencils, just as Mingi suggested. It was late at night when they decided it was time to go home. Their stomachs were full, feet a tad bit sore and exhausted. Mingi was already drowsy during the car ride.

“See you tomorrow,” Mingi muttered roughly, the ghost of his lips barely lingering against Yunho’s as a smile crept to his mouth. “Don’t stay up late again.”

“Thanks for making time for me today,” Yunho murmured, smile never leaving his face as he stared down at the man in his arms. “And for helping me pick a gift for hyung,” he nudged the paper bag hanging off his wrist.

Mingi hummed playfully and pursed his lips. “I had fun,” he giggled and tightened his hold around Yunho’s neck. “Thank you.”

Yunho chuckled but opting to press their lips together again. He can feel Mingi’s smile against his lips, arms loosely hanging on his shoulder, nimble fingers playing with the hairs tickling his nape. When they pulled away, Mingi smiled coyly at him before opening the door and pushing him inside.

“Goodnight, Yunho~,” Mingi grinned, wiggling his fingers as he waved him goodbye.

Yunho watched him walk backwards, never taking his eyes off of him until his back met his door. “Dream of me?” the blonde pleaded playfully as Mingi blindly unlocked his door. The way Mingi rolled his eyes had him cackling.

Mingi blew him a kiss before closing the door. Yunho was a little dopey when we finally entered his unit. His shoes were listlessly thrown to the side, the gifts he bought were left on the living room couch, and he had yet to change when he flopped on his bed. Today was yet another successful date. They finally got to spend some quality time together and Yunho was just so happy that Mingi had a good time. Maybe next time he can even make it better.

Yunho didn’t know how much time had passed but he blinked awake when his phone vibrated and Mingi’s name popped from his notification. His chest squeeze fondly, heart nearly melting at the sight of Mingi lying on his bed, thin-framed glasses perched on his nose as he pouted at the camera. Yunho saved the picture, going through his settings and changing the wallpaper of his chatbox. What was once a selfie of Mingi with a peace sign, was replaced by his adorably sleepy self.

Yunho sent a puppy gif hugging a big heart and Mingi reciprocated with a flying kiss. When he didn’t receive another message for five minutes, Yunho concluded that Mingi did finally sleep. He sighed in content and dropped his phone next to his head, fingers entwining over his stomach. Yunho stared at his bare ceiling in complete silence, calmness washing over him in the uneventful night. Sleep wouldn’t come to him anytime soon and the urge to open his computer and play was strong but he held it. Mingi asked him not to stay up, so he won’t.

Monday had been a normal day for Yunho. They discussed their internship next year and he met up with his research buddies to plan their proposal. It was a bit stressful, but not tiring just yet. Classes just ended and Yunho quietly strolled towards the gym. He bounded down the stairs, idly whistling a tune and greeting those who waved at him. Even though basketball season was over, that doesn’t mean that practice ended. Though, this honestly feels more like training camp preparations rather than practice itself. Yunho knows more than anyone else how rigorous it could be and just the very memory of the ‘Hell Weeks’ he went through had him feeling so thankful he didn’t have to participate anymore. He’s likely going to help their coaches supervise.

Unless, of course, he’s magically removed from the roaster and had to work his ass off again to pass.

“You guys are early today,” he greeted as soon as he entered the gym, nodding when the female manager waved at him. “Nervous?”

“A little,” she replied weakly, ducking her head down before she excused herself.

Yunho watch her sprint, smiling when she tried taking a peek towards him only to look away again when their eyes met. The senior shook his head and looked over to the first years and second years stretching in their respective spaces. His chest tightened at the very thought that some of them may finally join him in the court when the season starts again next year- even if it’s just for a few games.

Unfortunately, Yunho’s team did not manage to advance to the finals and only placed 3rd overall. Even though they ranked a place higher compared to last year, this season was supposedly Yunho’s last chance to take his team to the finals before he’ll retire next year.

Even worse, during the semi-final 3rd quarter, he got injured pretty badly and was unable to finish the match. It happened when he went for an alley-hoop and the rival center lost his form mid-air, tackling them both to the ground. One of the rival players lost balance when he landed and stepped on Yunho’s ankle. The player also elbowed their center’s nose and caused it to bleed. Yunho definitely remembered screaming loudly before he passed out due to shock.

Of course, it had been purely an accident. Both players even apologized to him profusely after he woke up in the infirmary, Mingi’s hand gripping his own under the blanket while they listened to their apology. He should’ve been sent to the hospital but Yunho insisted on staying until the end. They won the game but lost to next one. Soobin, their substitute center, did well to defend the ring but unfortunately they still lost with a score of 105-113.

It was regrettable and Yunho wallowed for quite a bit about it. The only thing that pushed him through it was the fact Mingi took care of him and kept him company while he healed both physically and emotionally. His teammates also wished him well and even sent pictures of their celebration for placing 3rd. They tried to visit Yunho but he refused them, a little too depressed for their company and forced positivity. He only feels a tad bit better every time Mingi visits his unit, bringing take out and helped him care for his injury. Sometimes, when he wasn’t too tired from working, they would watch a movie on his laptop until they were ready to turn in for the night. Mingi would help him bathe and then tuck him to bed. Thanks to the side-effects of the meds, Yunho fell asleep easily.

Even though that had been a weeks ago, Yunho can still feel a tinge of disappointment at their lost. It’ll probably take a bit more time to get over it but he was determined to use what time he had left to help nurture and strengthen the next team. His job as a captain wasn’t over yet. They have a set of promising players this year and Yunho is looking forward to watching them grow.

Yunho went to change into his plain white sleeveless shirt and basketball shorts. While he was tying his shoes, he felt a vibration beside him and found a notification popping on his screen. A smile broke out of his face when he saw Mingi’s name, telling him he was on his way to work and wishing him good luck in practice. Yunho replied a quick ‘be careful’ and ‘see you’ before putting it back in his bag and stuffing it in his locker. That giddy feeling in his chest didn’t settle down even when he stepped into the court, the sound of squeaky shoes and bouncing balls echoing in the entire room.

“Everything doing good, Soobin?”

“Ah- yes, captain,” Soobin answered, a little out of breath. He clutched the ball close to his chest and then swiftly passed it towards Yeonjun who was quick to do a hook.

“The first years are about to finish their warm-ups,” Yeonjun swooped in, passing the ball to Yunho. “Coach wants you to be referee on the first and second quarter then I’ll take over.” The vice-captain relayed before launching forward and attempted to steal the ball Yunho was mindlessly dribbling. “Damn it.”

“Nice try,” Yunho chuckled, dribbling the ball between his legs. Yeonjun immediately went defense, spreading his arms and legs.

Their shoes squeak on the floor, steps fast and agile as they both dance around each other. Yunho blocked Yeonjun with one arm and faced the ball away from him as he surged forward, a grin on his face when his vice-captain was caught off-guard at the sudden aggressive offense. Yeonjun blinked in surprise, form breaking as he hastily tried to back away without taking his eyes off the captain. When Yunho attempted to pass his left, he immediately followed only to belatedly realize it was a feint, Yunho smiling at him as he ducked to the right and ran pass him. Yeonjun lost his balance and ended up on his ass, a deep and petulant pout on his lips as he heard Yunho dunk the ball.

“What’s gotten you to show off?”

Yunho couldn’t help but chuckle as he helped Yeonjun to his feet, narrowly avoiding an indignant punch aimed at his shoulder. “What? You started it,” he retorted.

“I was expecting a man-to-man play like we always do, not for you to go for it like a bull,” Yeonjun grumbled as he accepted the hand.

Yunho was about to give him another retort when they heard the sharp shrill of a whistle. No sooner, a line was formed before their coach. Yunho and Yeonjun took their time strolling to the front and stood beside the older man, overlooking the young faces drenched in sweat and exhaustion.

“We’re going by odd-even numbers,” coach bellowed. “Odd number, you’re on red. Even, green.” Yunho silently scooped the vest piled on the stage behind them and handed the green colors to Yeonjun, and they began distributing them.  “Second string, you’ll play against the third string on the other half of the court. First years, you’ll be handled by these two,” he jabbed his thumb towards the captain and vice-captain. “We’re doing a full quarter so pace yourself properly. Am I clear?”

“Yes, coach!”

“Jeong Yunho, take over,” the older man ordered before rounding the 2nd and 3rd string towards the other half of the court.

“Which one’s your bet?” Yeonjun asked as they watched the first years huddle together, likely to decide for a team captain and first batch of players. “Red has Heesung. He’s pretty good at leading, good sense and remarkable player too.”

“I agree,” Yunho nodded but the pinch between his eyebrows had Yeonjun waiting for the rest of that sentence. “But he still has to work on his team play. He’s a good player and he knows it but he lacks patience. He’ll likely start scoring on his own if his team doesn’t do well.”

“Green is probably going to choose Jaewon,” Yeonjun muttered. “He was the captain of his high school team, right?”

Yunho hummed. He was quiet familiar with Song Jaewon. After all, it was him who recruited the kid a year ago. He has some good charm; definitely a sweet talker and an optimistic mind- level headed too. Though, in Yunho’s opinion, he’s too lax. There’s nothing wrong with having that personality but leading a group who’s not familiar with such approach is probably not going to end well for them. He told Yeonjun just as much and his vice-captain could only purse his lips; neither agreeing nor disagreeing.

After their hurdle, Yunho moved to the center of the court, whistle hanging around his neck and ball clutched at one hand. Both teams stood in line before him and Yunho made sure nothing was amiss; no loose shoelace, no extra tension aside from game jitters, and possible hidden injuries.

“Alright, remember to have a sense of sportsmanship and be careful not to injure each other,” he muttered as he prepared for a toss. As soon as the whistle blew, the two closest players jumped up and it was Heesung who tapped it first. No surprise there. From then on, the game immediately began.

The first quarter came in a blur, the pacing fast and frantic. The red team took the lead with 12-9. Yunho was impressed by their individual skills but their team work was absolute shit just as he predicted. Each of them were trying to show off and it is very apparent with how they signal each other. Yunho feels bad for their appointed point guard. Fortunately the lad doesn’t pay much attention for their pettiness and continued to do what he was appointed to do.

The green team though, Yunho has to commend them for the good defense. Yunho suspects it’s because of Joo Changuk. He’s seen his screens before and quick reflexes. The boy is also blessed with good spatial awareness and as a center, defense is definitely his specialty. So far, the tension has only risen and thickened, and it’s honestly starting to make Yunho tense for the 2nd quarter. He has a feeling that he’ll be using his whistle a lot more.

He was once again, correct.

Yunho could only deadpan as he blew the whistle 30 seconds into the game, five fingers held up and eyes glaring towards one of the green players when they lowly cursed before him. Of course, the junior was quick to apologize but Yunho can still feel the frustrations rolling off him. Another thing Yunho noticed was how out of breath they already are, mostly the red team considering how aggressive they were since the first quarter. Yunho worries they’ll wear themselves out before they can even switch players. Fortunately, most of his calls were just because of dribble and court violations. No one got injured and both teams seem to finally have caught their pacing, which was a huge relief for him.

One minute before the quarter ends, Yunho was ready to signal for Yeonjun to get ready when he caught a familiar face poking out from the entrance, curious eyes roaming around until they landed on him, a big grin breaking out of that beautiful face. Yunho felt his breath stutter and he blew the whistle on accident, causing some of the players to freeze as well as the other spectators to look over.

“My mistake,” Yunho chuckled sheepishly. “I choked on my saliva. Carry on.”

Yunho did not need to look at the mirror to check if his ears were red, he can tell just by the heat creeping to his face. From his peripheral, he saw Yeonjun welcome Mingi inside and have him watch from the stage along with the rest of the members. They conversed animatedly and from where he was, Yunho couldn’t really get a grasp of what they were talking about.

As soon as the clock hits zero, Yunho blew the whistle, signaling the start of the halftime. He pat the backs of those who passed him and yelled out a reminder to re-hydrate themselves, then he waved for the free members to do a quick mop on the floor. When all was set and done, he jogged towards Mingi, chest already tight with anticipation and glee. When the youner noticed him coming closer, he waved, fingers barely peeking from his sweater paws.

“Hey, what are you doing here? It’s not that late, right?” Yunho’s brows furrowed and he looked up to the Clerestory windows. Sure enough, there’s still streaks of sunset across the nearly dark blue sky. If he were to estimate the time, it would be roughly 6:30 in the evening. That’s about two and a half more hours before Mingi’s shift ends at the tutor center.

“Ah,” Mingi gaped playfully. “We might’ve had a bit of a problem that caused early dismissal,” he then pointedly stared at his current state and that’s when Yunho noticed the bottom of his pants were soaked as well as his shoulder area. Looking closely, it seems like Mingi’s hair is also damp along with the rest of his clothes.

“Wait, what happened?”

“The floor above us had a maintenance and whatever happened probably triggered the sprinklers,” he gestured at himself. “We had to clean everything up and tried to salvage as much materials as we can. We couldn’t really get any work done with everything wet so we just closed early while our manager called someone over to fix it.”

“You should’ve changed at least,” Yunho reprimanded gently. “It’s getting colder now, you’ll get sick if you stay wet like that.”

“Eh, it’s troublesome going back home,” he whined. “Plus, I thought I’d save time by just coming here and wait for you.” he whispered timidly.

As much as Yunho was happy that Mingi wants to see him just as much, he really couldn’t allow him to stay like that, especially when he started shivering despite his outmost effort not making it obvious. Yunho sighed and shook his head. He looked over his vice-captain and found him talking to the first years, likely giving a feedback of his observations and helping them strategize. No one seemed to pay them any mind so Yunho tugged Mingi’s sleeve.

“That won’t do. Come on, follow me.”

Mingi silently obliged and they made their way towards the locker rooms. The room was empty when they got in and this time, Yunho held Mingi’s hand as he pulled him towards his locker. Yunho punched the code and gave Mingi a shirt and another pair of shorts. He also pulled out a pair of black Nike slippers and let it flop on the floor.

“Change into this,” he said, nudging the clothing firmly when Mingi continued to gape at him.

“Wait, what about you?” he said, hesitant.

“I really didn’t move around much and I’m not that sweaty so I’m fine,” he explained as he took out a small towel and flopped it over Mingi’s damp hair, ruffling them together and ignoring the way the other man whined. “You, on the other hand, is already shivering so get changed before you really catch a cold.”

“Alright already!” Mingi exclaimed in annoyance and pushed him away, glasses askew as he tried to glare at Yunho.

He then turned around and began pulling his sweater off, wiping the excess dampness clinging to his body. Yunho averted his eyes, opting to take Mingi’s damp sweater and slipping it in a hanger. When he heard Mingi unbuckle his belt, this time Yunho completely turned around. It’s nothing he haven’t seen before but of course that isn’t a reason for him to openly ogle like a pervert. There’s a time and place for that. Plus, he didn’t want problems while he was still in practice.

“What are you guys even doing today?” he heard Mingi asked, along with the rustling of fabric.

“We thought we’ll let the first years and other players have their fun today.”

“How considerate of you,” Mingi chuckled sarcastically.

Before Yunho could retort, he felt something cold wound around his neck and when he looked over his shoulder, he found Mingi’s chin perched there, bright eyes peering at him with mirth. “What?” Yunho chuckled. He pulled Mingi’s arms around his neck and played with his slightly damp hands.

“I’m cold,” Mingi whined and snuggled deeper in his warmth.

Yunho tried not to shiver at the press of cold lips against his neck, followed by warm breath fanning over his skin. Yunho took a deep breath. He hang Mingi’s damp clothes in his locker and now with his hands free, he turned around and wrapped them around Mingi’s lithe waist, earning himself a low grunt when he squeezed the man closer.

“That’s what you get for being stubborn,” he jested, fingers wrapping around his wrist and locking Mingi in his arms.

“Aren’t you needed outside?” Mingi pointed, changing the subject.

“It’s actually Yeonjun’s turn to be referee so I’m pretty much free now until coach calls me over…” Yunho suddenly grins. “…which is unlikely since he’s also preoccupied with the other game.”

Mingi’s eyes narrowed incredulously. “What’s in that pretty head of yours?”

Yunho’s head fell back as a laugh bubbled from his throat. “What else? Of course, this.” Mingi didn’t get a chance to question any further when he felt lips against his own.

Truthfully, Yunho was a bit unsure if his bold advances would be reciprocated but the way Mingi melted against him thwarted those worries away. Mingi’s arms around his neck loosened and barely hang on his shoulder, lips lax and eyes falling shut as he savored the kiss. Yunho tried not to get ahead of himself. As much as he wanted to press Mingi against his locker, this was clearly not the perfect place for that. One hand remained on Mingi’s hip while the other cupped his heating cheek, thumb caressing his face.

When they pulled away, Mingi was once again pouting at him.

“Sorry,” Yunho chuckled. With his thumb, he wiped away the wetness glistening on Mingi’s pink lips. “I didn’t get a chance to do that this morning.”

“If you don’t stop stealing kisses, I’ll have to start charging you,” Mingi threatened, brows furrowed and a finger pointed at him. “Have mercy on my weak heart here, Jeong Yunho.”

Yunho laughs lowly and cooed at the way Mingi tried to push him away only to grunt when the hold around his waist tightened. “Of course,” Yunho nudged their cheeks together and pressed a tender kiss to his forehead. “Come on, let’s go. I’m sure they’ll start wondering where we are.”

Mingi nodded and fixed himself. He borrowed Yunho’s combed and tried to right his messy hair and wiped the remaining droplets tickling his nape. Yunho took the opportunity to dehydrate himself, finishing the rest of his water and sighing as his dry throat eased. From the corner of his eyes, he noticed how the shirt looked a little big on Mingi- which was honestly a surprise.

They are about the same height and share the same physique, heck Mingi had worn his clothes a few times before as well. But it is now when Yunho is starting to notice some changes. It’s probably because Mingi doesn’t work out as much as he did before that he’s starting to lose some of his muscles. The way the younger man tightened the drawstrings of the shorts seems to add more proof to Yunho’s assumption.

“Ready?” the blonde asked just as Mingi finished tying the string.

“Yeah.”

They exited the room without much haste. Mingi was silent during their short walk and was content to play with Yunho’s pinky as they lazily swung their hands. Yunho couldn’t help smile at him, fingers itching to fix the unruly spikes on his hair but finding it just was cute to look at. When they got back to the court, there was only about six minutes left on the clock.

“Huh, seems like the court two is going for an overtime.” Mingi muttered, eyes directed to where the senior players were.

Yunho looks over and his brows shot up in wonder. The score was pretty tight, with the second string leading by a mere three points. On the other court, Yeonjun also seemed to look stress about the run and gun between the two teams.

“I remember how… ah… egoistic I was when I was a first year,” Mingi chuckled, a nostalgic smile on his face.

“Egoistic? You?” Yunho echoed in disbelief. “Wait, really?”

Mingi looks over his shoulder, mirth and mischief dancing in his eyes. “Is that so hard to believe?” They walked over the stage, Mingi hopping back to sit over the edge and Yunho making sure he doesn’t slip.

“I’ve always thought you were a team player. I’ve never even seen you get frustrated even during a bad rally.”

Mingi chuckled and brought his knees up to his chest. “Just because I prioritize my team doesn’t mean I’m not selfish,” Mingi said as he rest his elbows on his knees and watched Yunho jump next to him. “I want to win, too but I always tell myself that volleyball is a team sport. Blaming my teammates won’t really do anything but sour our chemistry. I can take my team to victory but I can’t win by myself. That makes a difference.”

Yunho felt his throat clogged up. He looked down on his hands and was quite surprised to see them shake. He closed them into fist and let them rest on his lap. Yunho never told anyone and probably never admitted this to himself as well, but Mingi played a big role in the change of his character and morale. Yunho likely didn’t notice it himself until this very moment, watching Mingi entertain himself with the game before him, eyes smoldering yet warm like that of tea brewing by the fire pit.

Of course, Yunho knew winning wasn’t everything. He also valued his team but like Mingi, he was selfish as well. Yunho has the drive to aim for victory, always. He told himself that each game could be his last and that very thought always pushed him to go over his limits simply because he refused to half-ass a play. It was pride more than anything. And, it always resulted to him wearing himself out and getting benched early.

After each game, Yunho would stay behind and practice to the point he’d find himself lying on the floor, drench in sweat and ready to pass out. It was ironic though, because Mingi would be in the same situation as him. When they used to share the same court, Yunho observed Mingi a lot, even without meaning to. The difference between them was that Mingi didn’t make it to the first string. He wasn’t even benched. Mingi watched from the bleachers until half-way through the season when the 4th years retired. Despite that, he never slacked in practice and he certainly never used it as a reason to be discouraged.

Yunho, the oblivious idiot that he was, could only stare in silence as Mingi practiced his spikes across the court, the net was the only thing between them. Despite being in the same room, Yunho felt like there was a wide gap between them; deep and hallow crevice separating their worlds. Yunho lost count how many times he had watched Mingi’s back, fading in the distance until he can no longer see him, longing to reach out and meet his eyes again just like the first time. He lost count how many times he wished they could be in the same world. And he had, for the first time in his life, gave up wanting to sate his curiosity for the man.

Mingi remained a mystery to him.

They never talked much. They simply let the noise of the balls fill the silence. When Mingi was announced as a benched blocker, he didn’t cry. He jumped in happiness and hugged his fellow first years. Yunho wanted to cheer and congratulate him, yet the unsettling anxiousness prevented him from approach the man. When night came, when they were clearing the balls away and wiping the floor, when Yunho passed the volleyball team’s locker room, he heard muted sniffles. As he peaked by the door, he found Mingi’s red hair over his eyes, hands hastily wiping his tears, lips trapped between his teeth as he silenced himself.

Yunho learned to be grateful that day. Basketball is a team sport but not everyone can step into the court. Not everyone can share the victory after a long and tiring game. Sometimes, people can only enjoy the glory from afar, longing to feel the same heat and adrenaline as the others who play on the court. Not everyone can get their hard work repaid- although, they are some who can.

That day was a buried secret in Yunho’s heart.

“-ho?”

He will never tell anyone of it, not even Mingi.

 “Yunho?”

“Hm? Yes?” dazedly, he turned to the man next to him.

“The game’s over,” Mingi said, worry in his eyes. “Your coach is calling you over.”

At that, Yunho’s attention snapped to the center of the court where his coach was impatiently waiting for him. When he saw Yunho’s eyes on them, he waved him over with a stomp of his foot. Flustered, the blonde jumped down the stage and sprinted towards them, throwing a hasty apology over his shoulder. Mingi simply smiled and waved at him, a grimace on his face. Yunho ducked down in his embarrassment as he fell into the line.

“Bye, Captain!” some first years yelled as they sprinted away.

Yunho looks over as he set the lock in place. “What did coach say about overexerting yourselves?” he scolded but the smile on his face remained. He tugged on the chain once more and nodded when the lock didn’t budge. “Let’s go?” Yunho turned to Mingi who was scrolling through his phone. “You haven’t had dinner yet, right?”

“No,” Mingi shook his head. Yunho was about to ask him where they should go but Mingi beat him to it. “I don’t feel like eating take out tonight though,” he muttered.

“Hm? Then, what do you want?” Yunho asked, confused yet patient.

Mingi suddenly grins albeit wary. “It’s still early. How about I cook for us?”

Cook? Mingi can cook?

That’s how Yunho found himself looking over the onions in the vegetable section of the supermarket. Mingi was a few meters away from him, inspecting a carrot on one hand and a potato on another. At some point on their way to the market, Mingi expressed that he was freezing again and that’s how he ended up wearing Yunho’s varsity jacket- yes, the one with his name embroidered at the back. Yunho isn’t exactly sure how to check the quality of produce but Mingi said it’s all good if it doesn’t feel rotten or bruised. Yunho also isn't sure what he meant by that but so long as it doesn’t have any damage, it’s all good… right?

“Is it that stressful to pick one onion?”

Yunho jolted and looked over his shoulder, Mingi eyeing him in amusement. “Sorry. I’ve never really cooked before so I don’t know how to tell if it’s good or not.”

“Here,” he pointed at one particular onion. “The black spots on the bottom is one way to tell it’s going to mold soon. If you squeeze it like this and it’s squishy, then close to rotting. Here.” Mingi then drops one on his hand. “If it’s firm and smooth on the outside, then it’s likely fresh.” He puts the onion in the basket and gets another one.

Yunho gapes and silently watched him get the onions weighed and priced. It’s just onion but that was somehow fascinating to know. They went around for a bit longer because it seemed like Mingi decided to go full-out with grocery shopping and went to buy more ingredients than what they necessarily needed for tonight. At some point they had to replace the hand basket with a cart with the amount of things Mingi picked off the shelves.

“Uh, Mingi? Are we having a feast tonight?” Yunho questioned warily as he eyed the big bottle of soy sauce and gochujang Mingi just put in their cart.

“What?” Mingi glanced at him incredulously when Yunho pointed the items. “Ah, sorry. It’s just that it’s been so long since I did groceries other than just snacks and personal hygiene,” he looks away and Yunho swore he saw his ears go red. “Actually, it’s been a while since I cooked too… especially for someone else.”

Yunho felt himself get shy and maybe a little flattered. He watched Mingi fiddle with the bag of what seemed to be sugar in his hands before the other man shook himself to whatever reverie he was in and placed it in the cart. Yunho fell silent after that, far too flustered to say anything lest he wanted to make a fool of himself and say more mortifying things.

“Which reminds me, do you have anything in mind that you want to eat? I’ll try to make it if I can,” Mingi asked.

“It’s okay. I can eat anything so just do what you want,” Yunho assured him with a smile. “I’m sure I’ll like it anyway.”

Yunho took great delight when Mingi threw a pout at him, this time confirming that he is indeed blushing. “Meat it is then,” he grumbled with that deep voice of his.

They went to the frozen section next and Mingi was happy to know they had a discount today. Yunho watched him pick off two packs of each three different cuts and then a dozen eggs. Fortunately, they nearly had everything they needed for the kitchen. Their last stop was to get their personal needs. Yunho, as expected, ran to buy more bath essentials, some muscle reliever packets and a bag of hot packs. He didn’t forget about his weekly stack of unhealthy junk food and canned drinks, which by the way, Mingi glared at him into submission and he was left with little choice but to take half of what he usually buys.

“Don’t sulk,” Mingi giggled and nudged his pinky with his own. “I’m not telling you to stop eating them, okay? It’s just you need to stop drinking those energy drinks late at night.”

Yunho resisted the urge to tell him that he did so, since a month ago. Though, he kept quiet and let Mingi explain himself. Yunho found it endearing more than anything else and hearing Mingi worry about him like this made his heart thump erratically with fondness. Mingi paused mid-way his ranting when Yunho suddenly pat his head.

“I know,” Yunho sang lowly. “I’m not upset. Thank you for worrying about me~.”

Mingi’s looked down. He peered at Yunho shyly, lips between his teeth. “You’re making me want to kiss you right now.” He grumbled, flustered.

Yunho laughed and ruffled his hair playfully. “Then let’s go home. I can’t wait for dinner.”

They made their way to the register. It was fortunate that the line wasn’t that long and they went through it no problem. However, half-way through their items, Mingi suddenly gasped. “Yunho, we forgot the ramyeon. Can you run and get it? Please?”

Something about him making a cute face for the request tipped Yunho off but before he could question it, Mingi was already pushing him away, saying something about not wanting to hold up the line. Yunho complied and sprinted all the way to the other end of the store, quickly snatching one bag of Shin Ramyeon and another random noodle brand. When Yunho got back, he finally understood why Mingi made him leave close to paying.

“Thanks,” the younger beamed and snatched the bag off his hands. The cashier quickly scanned it and stuffed it in the last bag. Yunho could only watched as Mingi paid for their last purchase.

He didn’t want Yunho to pay so he sent him off so he could do it. That sneaky vixen.

“Let’s go,” Mingi said and took the bags off the counter.

When they exited the store, the temperature dropped even more and they were left with no choice but to hastily sprint back to Yunho’s car. During the ride back, Mingi busied himself searching through recipes in Naver while Yunho tried to assure him not to stress over it, and even teased him they could just have ramyeon and eggs for dinner if it doesn’t end well. He got hit on the shoulder for that, but at least Mingi looked cute glaring at him.

The journey back was interesting to say the least.

When they arrived at the complex, it was silently decided that dinner was in Yunho’s unit tonight. Yunho hauled the bags on his kitchen counter while Mingi went around pulling out pans and pots. Standing up, Yunho finally felt the pull on his muscles, groaning as his shoulders and back ached.

“You should go shower.” Mingi walked up to him and massaged his nape, concern written all over his features. “You didn’t play today but you did move around.”

Yunho chortled and shook his head. “It’s fine. I can manage.” He straightened up and rotated his shoulders to relief some of the tension. “What do you need help with?”

Mingi rolled his eyes and pulled him towards the bathroom. “Just go take a bath, seriously. You still stink, you know.”

“I do?” Skeptical, Yunho raised one arm up and sniffed his armpit, making Mingi cringe at him in disgust.

“Just go already!” Mingi exclaimed and pushed him in his room. “Seriously. When you’re done, then you can help me… probably.”

“Are you sure?” Yunho lingered by his door, watching Mingi shrug off his jacket and drop it on a chair. That shouldn’t be attractive, but somehow it is. Huh.

“I’m not gonna burn down your kitchen, if that’s what you’re worried about,” Mingi chuckled as he began taking out the things from the bags and separated them into sections all the while looking at Yunho in amusement.

“Alright. Just call if you need anything.”

“Sure, hero.”

Yunho felt his cheeks heat up at the new nickname. He decided that was enough mortification in one night and finally shut the bathroom. He made sure to be quick though, scrubbing himself down but sighing as the tension left his body along with the steam of the hot shower. He tried very hard not to let his mind venture somewhere beyond innocent. He needed to calm down.

“It’s just dinner. Nothing special. Nothing out of character. You’ve done with before, Jeong Yunho.”

Yunho finally shut the water off and stepped out of the shower. He wiped down his fogged mirror and realized he stayed longer than he should have with the amount of pink tinting his cheeks and skin. He reached for his towel and pat himself dry then wrapped it around his waist. Afterwards, he did his skin care routine and slapped some muscle relievers on his calf and shoulders. When he exited the bathroom, his apartment was already smelling with Korean spice and seasoned meat.

“Oh, it smells so good,” he sighed as he ruffled his wet hair with a smaller towel.

“Thanks,” Mingi replied from the kitchen.

Yunho paused, the hand drying his hair remained motionless over his head. He watched as Mingi moved around in his kitchen like it was his own. This time he was wearing a green floral apron that Yunho was sure he doesn’t own. Mingi must’ve went back to his apartment to get his. Something about the set up seemed… intimate. Here Mingi was, cooking for them, wearing Yunho’s clothes and moving around his kitchen with so much familiarity, it hurts. It almost felt so domestic that Yunho wants to wake up to this every morning and go home to every night. Is it selfish to want to see this every day? Too early?

Yunho approached the cook, arms immediately wrapping around his lithe waist. “What are you making?” he whispered against Mingi’s ear, giggling when the man in his arms pressed himself further against him and made room for Yunho’s lips on his neck.

“Bulgogi.” Yunho drew back when something stopped before his lips, only to see it was a piece of meat. It smelled so good and his stomach immediately complained, prompting a laugh from Mingi. “How does it taste?” he asked as he stirred the pot.

“It’s good,” Yunho whined, his mouth salivating even more as flavor hit his tongue. It was so rich and a little sweet, the meat was still slightly tough at the center but it was really savory and juicy.

Mingi went to taste another piece of the beef, humming to himself in approval. “Just a bit more,” he muttered then opened a pot, which Yunho recognized to be Kimchi jjiggae. Mingi went to taste a spoonful of the broth and nodded. Despite Yunho literally clinging to him, he effortlessly reached for the tofu and began slicing it into cubes, sliding it inside the pot and stirring it slowly. “Get change. You still have to help me with the pajeon.”

Yunho kissed his cheek one more time before removing himself. On his way to his room, he microwaved three bowls of rice and made sure to remind Mingi of it in case he takes longer to get ready. Yunho finally exited his room wearing worn out sweatpants and solely his head through the shirt hole, the rest of the fabric bunched around his neck and shoulders.

“Okay, what should I do?” Yunho asked as he made his place next to Mingi.

Mingi side-glanced him bemusedly. His sharp eyes assessed Yunho from head to toe, stopping pointedly at his very much exposed abdomen. Yunho’s breath hitched when a finger pressed at the center of his stomach, between the ridges of his abs. Yunho watched with baited breath as the finger nail trailed upwards, barely scratching over the skin. The touch felt hot, nearly searing that if he were to look down he’d see a red line burning onto his flesh. White noise suddenly filled his ears and muted his surroundings, eyes intently watching as the limb stopped at his sternum. At the back of his mind, he wondered if Mingi can feel his heart beating even from that distance.

“How about you wear your clothes properly,” Mingi playfully sneered and jabbed his finger at Yunho’s sternum, literally punching the breath out his lungs. He tugged the strings of Yunho’s sweatpants, pulling him close as well and tied it string tightly, causing Yunho to gasp. “What are you doing walking about half-naked in a kitchen.” He then shoved a jar of Kimchi on Yunho’s chest along with bundles of scallions. “I don’t want you complaining about popping oil if it burns you later just because you want to go all macho-dancer on me.”

“Macho danc- Mingi!” Yunho protested with a laugh, watching as the other man turned away sharply and continued to stir the bulgogi rather aggressively.

“Get me a plate,” he demanded with a pout.

Yunho’s smile grew bigger as he noticed the red tinting on Mingi’s cheek and ears. Using one hand, he opened the cabinet above him and pulled out a deep dish plate then slid it towards Mingi who dumped the entire bulgogi inside. Yunho licked his lips, teeth barely stopping the stupid grin that was about to form on his face.

“You think I’m macho?” he asked suavely, hip leaning against the counter as he gave Mingi an easy smile.

“Oh my god, just cut the vegetables already!”

Yunho jumped at the sudden outburst of Mingi slamming the knife down, glaring at Yunho quite bashfully. His grin didn’t fall as he threw the kimchi and scallions down, scrambling to find a bowl and his kitchen scissors. The elder peered at the man next to him, secretly smiling as he began to cut the scallions in the bowl. It was quiet for the most part. Mingi would murmur him instructions, more often stealing glances when he thought Yunho wasn’t looking.

It was peace.

It was probably the most peaceful between them. They worked around each other as though they’ve done it all the time. Maybe they played around with the flour or wiped the egg slimes on each other’s face and clothes, and forcibly fed each other chilies and raw scallions- but it was fun. And it was peace. Even with the playful banter, even with the indignant protest and shoves, Yunho didn’t lose his smile. Every time Mingi laughed and grinned at him, he felt his heart melt more and more as time passed by. He was happy.

They ate dinner while watching some cheesy chick-flick movie Yeosang recommended just to have Mingi give a bad review about it because apparently, it was a good movie according to Wooyoung. Dinner was fantastic and it gave Yunho warmth for every bite they shared. It’s been such a long time since he had homemade food. The only time he can, would be during a holiday when he can go home or if his parents visit him and his mom carries piles and piles of banchan to keep in his refrigerator for at least a week (it doesn’t actually last a week. Yunho kept eating it because he got homesick).

“Then, if I can, I’ll try to cook for you,” Mingi muttered timidly, fiddling with his chopstick. “Just tell me, I’ll see what I can do.”

If Yunho felt his eyes burn, no one needed to know. If his throat clogged up and his tongue got tied, no one needed to know. If he felt more than adoration and gratitude towards Mingi for his words and affection, then Yunho wished he could openly tell him.

But he swallowed it all and smiled. “Really? Thank you!”

If Mingi’s smile was enough reward, then Yunho wished he can do more to coax it out of him. For now, he is content. In this very room, with just the two them, enjoying a warm meal and laughing about corny characters in a film, Mingi leaning on his shoulder, holding his hand, kissing his cheek- this is happiness. This is Yunho’s peace.

Hongjoong’s birthday was unexpectedly celebrated a few days early.

Yunho felt a vibration from his pocket. He looked over to Mingi who was busy cooking something up from his kitchen, his playlist booming from the Bluetooth speaker resting on the table. Savory and spicy aroma wafted in the room, the sound of sizzling accompanied the beat Mingi was dancing to. Yunho felt his stomach rumble in hunger as he pulled his phone out, his brows shooting up in wonder as he saw Hongjoong’s name blinking from the screen.

오전  11:45  Yunho, are you free this Saturday?

 ??? 오전  11:45

I think so? 오전  11:45

Why? 오전  11:46

오전  11:46  Let’s go out. My treat.

오전  11:46  You, Sannie, Me

오전  11:46 Jongho too

오전  11:47  if San can convince him.

Yunho was perplexed even more. Hongjoong barely has time for his own hobbies. His hyung has always been a workaholic and a big ball of stress with poor time-management. For him to ask them out like this makes Yunho think that it might be something important to him. So he checks the calendar, brows furrowing at the date. Saturday, November 3rd.

Where to ? 오전  11:49

오전  11:51  Aurora Lights

That’s how Yunho found himself staring at the bright neon gold cursive sign of Club Aurora Lights in the district of Itaewon. The entrance was pretty unassuming; black gate tucked at the side alley with one bouncer standing as a guard. There was no line, which makes sense since it’s very exclusive and for booking only. It was so Hongjoong to place a reservation in one of Itaewon’s upscale gay night club.

“Are we in the right place?” San asked warily as they looked around the empty and dark parking lot.

“Yes,” Yunho answered. He unbuckled his seatbelt and exited his car, Jongho and San following after him. “Now, come on. He’s already waiting inside.”

San whined but complied. In his hands was a box of cake they picked up on their way. As it turns out, Hongjoong kind of caught up with their plan with surprising him on his birthday. Although the elder didn’t want to celebrate his birthday like that, he also didn’t want to spoil their fun. Unfortunately, on the day of his birthday, he had to fly to Italy to attend a fashion gala. It was an all-expense program offered by the company he was an intern of and Hongjoong was very fortunate that his application got accepted. That’s why to celebrate, they got together early in the week.

Yunho took the lead. He can feel San clutching at the back of his shirt with Jongho likely walking at the end. The bouncer asked for their reservation and Yunho simply said Hongjoong’s name, waiting patiently as the man scanned through the list. When they were cleared, they ducked inside. The alley was dim and narrow, probably enough for two people to walk side by side. There was only one light and it was at the very end of the path, right by another steel door.

Yunho knocked on the twice and it opened with a squeak. The once silent alleyway was immediately filled with echoes of beats coming from the inside. Yunho wasn’t one for clubbing. He much prefers drinking soju at home with his friends or go wild in the arcade. The only time he lets himself get smashed with alcohol would be during frat parties. Mingi was the complete opposite though, not by choice at least. From what he heard, Wooyoung would drag him and Yeosang to bar and club hopping once every two weeks if Mingi had no upcoming games or if exam season was still away.

The interior of the club was as luxurious as its reputation. The walls was padded with black velvet and the ceilings lined with crystal light chandeliers. There were a few people mingling at the hallways, small drinks at hand and whispering towards each other. They took a flight of stairs, the hall once more dimming and lit by thin baby blue neon lights lining each step and the handles.

As soon as they were out of the hallways, they were immediately bombarded by the night life of the club. The music was even louder, vibrations could be felt even from the soles of their feet and walls. The lights were bright, flashing and zooming all over the walls and the sea of bodies by the pit. The scent of citrus freshener was prominent with an underlying stench of alcohol and sweat.

“Over there.” Jongho pointed on the upper floor and sure enough, they found Hongjoong lounging on the couch, already nursing of what seemed to be brandy. The elder spotted them and waved them over.

“Hyung! Happy birthday!” San chimed over the music as he presented the box of cake to Hongjoong.

Hongjoong chuckled and shook his head. “It’s not yet my birthday, San.”

“Yes, but you won’t hear a personal greeting from us when the day comes!” San protested. He placed the box on the table and slid next to the elder. Jongho sat on the opposite side but he slid around the U couch until he reached Hongjoong’s side and clung to his arm.

“Happy birthday, hyungie~” Jongho sang in that annoying baby talk of his, making Hongjoong grimace and try to move away but Jongho just clung tighter and even rubbed his cheek on Hongjoong’s shoulder.

“Ahh, get him off!” Hongjoong yelled and wriggled away.

“No!” San pouted and wrapped his arms around the elder’s opposite arm the same way Jongho did. “Take all our love, hyung! You’re not allowed to reject our affection.”

“If you keep this up, I’m taking back my offer and you’ll pay for yourselves!” Hongjoong threatened but it seemed to fall on deaf ears as the two youngest continued to smother him. “Yunho, please do something.”

“They just miss you,” Yunho chuckled and leaned his chin on his palm. “It’s been a while since we hang out like this and you’ll be leaving again this weekend.”

“Yeah, for like, 4 days?” Hongjoong grumbled with a roll of his eyes.

“And it’s the holidays again after!” San added. “You’re always busy these days. You didn’t even get to celebrate Chuseok and Jongho’s birthday with us when you promised us you would!”

“Jongho, what’s your excuse?” Hongjoong sighed.

“You told me you’ll buy me a new pair of shoes if we win the regionals. We did and until now, my shoes is not yet delivered at my doorstep.”

“Ah.”

Yunho didn’t know what was funnier; the way Hongjoong slumped in resignation or the way Jongho said his demand so casually while still cuddling the elder’s arm. Yunho watched them argue amongst themselves, his heart light and content despite the loud environment. He may not say it aloud but he did miss having Hongjoong around. The older would always treat them lunch when he can or even give them advice when the pressure of academics got to them. Jongho especially relied on him even if the younger would never admit it. He was Jongho’s previous captain, after all.

“Help yourselves,” Hongjoong gestured absently towards the bar below. San was happy to take the offer and made his way down, Jongho following after him. “Nothing for you?” the older asked.

Yunho shook his head with a smile as he reached to open the cake. “I’m driving later so no alcohol. Maybe I’ll get a cherry coke later though.” He carefully took out the cake the then flipped the box to it use as a podium. He felt around his pocket for the lighter they bought and placed it on the table, ready for later. “How are you, hyung?”

Hongjoong took a swig of his brandy and then shrugged. “Okay. It’s been busy and I feel like my seniors are stretching me thin but I’m happy. I’m learning a lot in my field and I guess, I’m heading in the right direction.”

Yunho chuckled. “I’m glad to hear that.”

“How about you?” Hongjoong glanced at him. “You injured your ankle last time, right? How are you doing? Sorry I didn’t get to visit you.”

Yunho felt his chest hallow briefly before the feeling dissipated. He slumped back on the couch with his lips pressed firmly. “It’s okay,” Yunho waved dismissively. “I was only bedridden for three days. It wasn’t really that serious. I did receive the fruit basket you sent, so thank you.” He sighed and was about to mess with his hair before recalling San took a whole hour styling it. “We lost the game big time though, and we were so close, too.”

“You took them farther than last year, that’s something you should be proud of,” Hongjoong consoled with a gentle smile. “If they’re smart and if they value your hard work, they will use this loss as their motivation to make it to the finals next season.” His eyes fluttered close, lips kissing the rim of the glass as he finished his drink. “It’s not over until it’s over, Yunho. You’re still their captain until you retire,” he chuckled. “I guess even then you’re responsibilities are not yet over.”

Yunho followed Hongjoong’s gaze all the way down to the bar where San and Jongho waited for their drinks. He fell into deep thought after that. Moments like this, he wished he had a glass of tequila to bask in. He had told himself a loss is not the end- heck, he said the same thing to his team after the game. He suffered defeat before too, but he figured it felt heavier now because of his role as a captain. Once, he laid awake at night wondering if the outcome would be different if he didn’t get injured.

When he told Mingi about it, he ended up getting smacked at the thigh of for it.

“You make it sound like your team is nothing with you.” He chided. Yunho remembered yowling in pain when Mingi squeezed the ice pack around his ankle. “Don’t let your ego talk for you. If you’re blaming yourself when you didn’t even play, imagine how your teammates were faring. Soobin probably blamed himself the most. He took your role, after all.”

“You’re a good player, Yunho.” Mingi eased the pressure around his injury, a melancholic smile on his face. “It’s okay to be disappointed and hurt. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be but basketball is a team sport. You win as a team. You lose as a team.” His strong fingers gently massaged the sole of Yunho’s foot, gently kneading and rolling the muscle underneath his hold. “But right now, you’re just giving yourself unnecessary burden.”

Yunho flinched at the cold touch on his cheeks, eyes meeting Mingi’s softer gaze. “You did so well, Yunho. I’m proud of you.” His eyes fluttered close as a tender kiss pressed against his forehead.

If Yunho leaned closer and hid in Mingi’s neck, silently letting the tears of disappointment and defeat cascade down his cheeks, no one but them needed to know.

“Are you going to order, sir?” a waiter suddenly asked.

Hongjoong shook his head. “Not yet, we’re still waiting for someone. You can come ba-”

“There they are. Hongjoong!”

Yunho reeled towards the call. Surprise colored his features when Wooyoung suddenly came bounding in, throwing himself towards the elder who grunted in pain. Wooyoung smacked a wet and loud kiss on Hongjoong’s cheeks, causing him to scream in distress. Yeosang came after, pulling Wooyoung away by the scruff of his neck. Seonghwa followed, smiling that pained smile of his as he consoled Hongjoong. Wait, if they’re here, that also means…

“You guys, what are yo-“ Yunho didn’t get to finish before he stuttered, words suddenly caught in his throat. “Mingi?” he called, breathless.

Mingi turned at the call of his name and his eyes widen when their gazes met. Yunho knows he’s quite smitten with the man and he lost count the number of time he called Mingi beautiful and gorgeous, but he really can’t help himself when the truth is presented to him. Even with the dim light and distance, he can still make out the small details of Mingi’s appearance. Yunho can’t stop staring and he felt like his heart was ready to burst out of his chest.

Mingi got his hair styled, parted and swept back, strands of hair falling over his eyes. Upon closer look, his lids were dusted with peach eyeshadow, eyes lined with thin eyeliner. His lips were tinted pink, shining with a bit of lip gloss, making it even more plump and tantalizing. Yunho can already feel his jaw ache with how hard he was biting his lip, wishing it was Mingi’s instead. His gaze fell down when Mingi suddenly wrapped an arm around his abdomen area and that’s when Yunho finally noticed his get up for the night.

Mingi wore a crop top vest, hugging his already lithe waist and exposing a bit of stomach even with the barest movement. The neckline was low and open, enough to give a peek on his sternum and pale chest. If ogled at the right angle, Mingi’s nipples could probably be seen. Yunho swallowed thickly, his gaze moving up and meeting Mingi’s bashful and still surprised eyes.

“You might as well just eat him here.”

Yunho jerked in surprise at the whisper to his ear, a deadpan look in his eyes as he San cackled. Yunho groaned and shoved him away. He rubbed his ear, mortified to feel the heat creeping there. San smirked only to yelp in pain when Wooyoung suddenly sat on his lap.

“Serves you right,” Yunho mouthed towards his best friend, snickering when he got a glare in return.

Yunho folded his legs to make way for Yeosang, Seonghwa, Jongho to sit at the center of the booth. Seonghwa ended up next to Hongjoong, Yeosang with Jongho, and despite the extra space, Wooyoung refused to get off San’s lap and San seems to have no problem with it. Mingi, on the other hand, sat next to Yunho, a tall glass of cherry mojito on his hands.

“Everyone’s here so we’ll just order,” Hongjoong let the waiter know.

They ended up ordering a plate of fruits, a pajeon, shredded squid, golbaengi muchim, dubu kimchi and Yeosang personal favorite, fried chicken. Yunho also added two cans of cherry coke. After that, everyone seemed to settle. Wooyoung especially chatted with Hongjoong while Yeosang occupied both Jongho and Seonghwa. Yunho can already feel goosebumps rise at his nape as his cloth arm made contact with Mingi’s bare skin.

“I didn’t know you’d be here,” Yunho said, unmindful of his tone. Aside from the loud music pumping in the air, it’ll be even more suspicious if they whispered among themselves.

“Neither did I,” Mingi answered. He stared down at his drink, lazily swirling it with his straw before leaning down and taking a sip. “When Seonghwa said we’re going out, I didn’t expect clubbing, much less celebrate Hongjoong’s birthday. Wooyoung was excited actually.”

Yunho did tell Mingi about his plans with Hongjoong since Saturdays are usually where they go out on dates or simply hang out. Yunho, of course, was a little down to miss a date night with Mingi but at the same time, he was excited to see his hyung again. He didn’t have to feel too bad about leaving Mingi alone for one night because the younger man did tell him that Seonghwa also asked them out, coincidentally on the same Saturday night. Mingi sent Yunho his regards and wishes for Hongjoong and even asked Yunho to pass on his gift for the elder- only for them to end up in the same get together.

“You look good,” Yunho said, his lips meeting the rim of the canned drink. “Like really good.” He can feel the heat rise to face as he glanced at Mingi, who was set on finishing half of his mojito, refusing to meet his eyes.

“Thanks, you don’t look so bad yourself,” Mingi all but purr, biting the plastic straw playfully. “You should thank Wooyoung for this though,” he jerked his chin to the younger man who was busy cackling with San, leaning his entire weight on the elder and fiddling with the hand pressed against his stomach. “I didn’t plan coming here looking like this. I don’t even know how he scavenged this from my closet- I don’t even remember having this!” he gestured at his vest. “It’s really cold outside, too.”

“You came here with just that?” Yunho questioned incredulously. It was a miracle Mingi made it all the way here without freezing.

“No, Seonghwa noticed I was basically shaking to my very bones the moment we got out of the apartment and lent me his jacket,” his sharp eyes then narrowed towards Yeosang. “But for whatever reason, Yeosang wanted me rid of it so here I am now, still freezing.”

“I think I still have my cardigan in the car, should I get it?”

“Yes, please,” Mingi all but beg.

Yunho was about to stand up but their food arrived just in time. Seonghwa then lit up the two birthday cakes and the singing of an offkey ‘Happy birthday’ immediately began. Hongjoong was too mortified to do anything but clap his hands timidly. He blew out the black forest cake that Seonghwa presented first and then the strawberry shortcake that Wooyoung nearly shoved on his face if San hadn’t stop him.

“We spent money on that, don’t waste food,” San berated before urging Wooyoung to present it properly.

Wooyoung grumbled something under his breath but he froze when San lightly slapped his thigh. The younger man rolled his eyes before doing as he told. When Hongjoong finally blew out both candles, they all yelled ‘happy birthday’ and took turns trying to smear icing on the older’s face.

“Stop it!” Hongjoong growled as he tried to dodge Seonghwa, groaning in annoyance when he failed. “I don’t have an extra shirt!”

“Don’t worry about it,” Seonghwa playfully scoffed and smeared a long line of icing on across Hongjoong’s cheek. “It’s not like you do your own laundry anyways,” he grumbled.

“Open the booze!” Wooyoung cheered as he clambered for the case of beer. He snatched the Swiss knife San handed to him and flicked the bottle opener out.

The low hiss and pop of bottles filled their table as they yelled out a cheers, Yunho using his can of cherry coke for the toast and Mingi with the remains of his cherry mojito. Somehow, that was their cue to let the party begin. Jongho helped himself with the shredded squid and pajeon while he and Yeosang discussed the updates about his team.

“I heard rumors from the 3rd years that coach plans to change me into the center midfielder,” Jongho said.

“That’s a great!” Seonghwa cheered eagerly, a faint dusk of pink on his cheeks.

“Yeah,” Hongjoong slurred, already tipsy from one bottle alone. Yunho watched him lean his head against Seonghwa’s shoulder and accepted the Shine Muscat the oldest fed him. “Congratulations. It’s going to be a lot more tiring for you though,” he pointed at the youngest.

“It was your position before they changed you into the goalie, right?” Seonghwa asked and chuckled when Hongjoong blindly swatted the hand massaging his scalp. Despite the harsh act, Seonghwa’s smile and gaze only softened. Huh.

“Hmm,” Hongjoong hummed.

“Our baby youngest is really going out there dominating the field,” Wooyoung cooed teasingly. Yunho was certain that if he can reach across the table, he’d be squishing Jongho’s cheeks by now.

“Who knows, maybe next year you’ll be the next captain,” Mingi mused, chin resting on his palm as he stared at their youngest. “Reminds me of a certain prodigy,” he added knowingly, throwing a look towards Yunho.

Yunho met his gaze steadily, his own chest pinching at the proud spark in Mingi’s eyes. Yunho used to hate hearing that word: Prodigy. He heard the hearsays about him before, both the good and the bad. Being a competitive player, who’s really good at his field of sport no less, there will those who admires him and those who resents him. Often times, Yunho drowns out both. People will only value him if he meets their expectations; may those expectations be positive or negative.

Those who resent him will envy him, belittle him in their minds, and ruin his name with whispers behind their hands. Those who admire him will put him on a pedestal, shower him with gold and treat him like he’s untouchable; only to fall disappointed when he acts further or less from what they imagined him to be. Regardless of the differences of these people, they share the same thing; they only see his success but never his hard work. They gave him the title of ‘Prodigy’ as though he was gifted by the finest of talents. They all love and hate the ‘idea’ of him, and Yunho… he hated it. It suffocated him for a long time until he decided it simply isn’t worth the ear anymore.

But Mingi though- Mingi sees his hard work. Mingi saw his hard work. Mingi had seen him practice until his bones gave out, had witnessed him burn himself down until all was left were his tears, and watched him struggle with the burdens resting on his shoulders. Mingi admires him but more than that, Mingi respects him. And Yunho couldn’t ask for more.

Of course, the feeling was mutual. In more ways than one.

The night progressed on significantly well. Wooyoung and San made their way down to the dance pit, dragging a fairly giggly Yeosang and pouty Jongho to join their shenanigans. Yunho worries for them considering the amount of beer they had in their system. He was hoping that San’s stomach didn’t get overwhelmed, otherwise the car ride back home is going to be interesting. Mingi was hanging by the bar, helping himself with a glass of tequila and a can of sprite. All the complaints about the temperature seems to have finally flown over his head, alcohol likely heating up his body with the way he tried to fan himself and press the cold can against his neck. Yunho felt shivers run all over his body at the sight and it took all of his will power to look away lest he wants some uninvited reaction to make itself known in public. Which would be quite mortifying.

He turned to the oldest pair and found them sitting close to each other, Seonghwa resting on Hongjoong’s collarbones while the younger man murmuring something on his hair and prompting a dopey smile out of him. Yunho wanted to avert his eyes. They look a little… intimate. He felt like he was intruding their space despite how open the two of them seemed to be. He couldn’t see it because of the table and how the pair sat, but he was certain their hands were joined and rested on Seonghwa’s lap. He wasn’t sure if their closeness was due to the alcohol or because they were just tired- Yunho frankly didn’t mind but it does make him wonder if they are more than just what they try to present themselves as.

“You look a little lonely.”

His attention turned to the new voice, gaze assessing the newcomer who smiled rather playfully at him. The man was slim, blonde hair highlighted with blue, eyes sharp but bright, and lips pulled into a pout. Yunho raised an eyebrow at him.

“Not really,” Yunho shrugged and finished the rest of coke. “All my friends are having the time of their lives down there,” he tilted his head down the dance floor, fringes falling over their eyes. “And as you can see, those two over there are a little stuck in their own world. I’m alone but I’m certainly not lonely.”

“Well, I could keep you company,” the stranger said, his voice dipping low as he tried to meet Yunho’s eyes.

Yunho had to applaud his confidence but it’s not really his personality to play around with strangers, especially when he’s already seeing someone. It’s better to nip at the bud before this guy gets other ideas and think they’re playing a game of cat and mouse.

Yunho slouched on his seat, his legs unintentionally spreading wide. He can see the stranger eye the movement, staring unabashedly at his crotch. Yeah, no, definitely shameless to the boot. “Thanks for the offer, but sorry to say I’m not interested,” he smiled, not feeling apologetic at all.

“Oh?” the stranger tips his head aside and stepped closer. “What’s your excuse?” he muttered lowly.

Yunho chuckled lightly and shook his head. He glanced over at his eldest friend and found them both staring, features somber and free of the tipsiness they both succumbed to a while ago, waiting to interfere if it came to it. But really, there’s nothing to worry about. “There’s no excuse. I’m really just not interested.”

“Hmm? Are you perhaps seeing someone already?” the man asked coyly, quirking an eyebrow as though Yunho was pulling bullshit on him.

Yunho is not yet on the point where he is annoyed. If anything, seeing the desperation on the guy was quite amusing. He’s not cruel to toy with people like this but sometimes, there’s this sick part of himself that simply enjoy seeing them act like they can best him when they can’t. “And if I am, what are you gonna do?”

The stranger bit his lips and started to rock on his feet, fluttering his lashes on Yunho and began talking in that sweet and forced soft tone. “Well, what they don’t see, they don’t know.” Definitely no on this one.  Yunho heard the distinct sound of Hongjoong scoffing but he remained quiet after that. Yunho can almost see the older roll his eyes in exasperation. “I’m sure I can do better.”

“Oh? I’m sure you also deserve someone better than a guy willing to cheat on their partner just for one fuck, am I right?”

Yunho felt his blood run cold and he immediately straightened. His attention reeled behind the stranger where Mingi stood, a tall glass of Mint Julep on one hand and a bottle of water on the other. Mingi shouldered pass the stranger, completely ignoring the glare thrown at his way as he lightly kicked Yunho’s foot to make way for him back in the couch.

“Have a little self-respect,” Mingi continued as he placed his glass on the table and made an attempt to open the bottle, only to groan when it refused to budge so he tapped Yunho’s chest with it. Understanding what was asked of him, Yunho opened the bottle with one twist and gave it back to him. Mingi took one big gulp and wiped the corner of his mouth, grumbling as he continued to speak. “Also, when someone tells you they’re not interested, you gotta respect that.”

“Excuse me, but who the fuck are you?” the stranger scowled.

“Me?” Mingi pointed at himself, eyes wide in mock surprise at being addressed. He didn’t elaborate further though. He simply wrapped his arms around Yunho’s arm and pressed himself firmly against him, all the while not breaking eye contact with the stranger.

The stranger looked between them, realization dawning on his features. Shock morphed into indignation and he looked so offended, Yunho had to wonder what for. He was firm with his rejection and didn’t entertain the flirting. He tried to recall if he said something that might have stirred their short exchange but nothing came to mind.

“You? You don’t look that much,” the guy scoffed.

That- Yunho cannot ignore. The amused smile on his face morphed into irritation, his jaw tensing as he directed a smothering glare towards him. The stranger flinched in surprise, eye wide and mouth agape. Good. He needs to learn his place and take a rejection when he hears one. This guy can’t hold a candle against Mingi, at all. He lost before he can even compete and Yunho wants to say every sharp filth stuck in his tongue to make sure this guy drills it in his head to never insult Mingi again.

Yunho’s exasperation dissipated when he felt a squeeze on his bicep. It took time before he could level down his glare, slowly directing his attention back to the man next to him. Honestly, he should’ve known better than to worry about Mingi because as soon as he turned to him, what he saw only took his breath away. Mingi’s eyes was directly looking at the man; nothing about his features showed anger nor hurt. If anything, he looked equal parts indifferent and deadpan, his makeup only served to intensify his expression.

The longer Mingi mutely stared, the more unsettled their unwanted guest became. Four pair of displeased eyes on him was enough to have him storming off, huffing as he stomped away to where his friends seemed to be. Yunho made sure he got the message across, keeping his eyes on them until Hongjoong spoke.

“So, you and Mingi?”

Their attention shifted back to the eldest pair and found them back in their comfortable position, except this time Hongjoong was resting on Seonghwa’s shoulders, eyes fluttered close as he waited patiently for an answer. Yunho turned to Mingi who shrugged before he snuggled on his shoulder.

“Yeah,” Yunho muttered, patting Mingi’s head.

“How long?” this time, it was Seonghwa who asked, voice gentle and eyes warm.

Mingi hummed thoughtfully, squeezing Yunho’s arm once more. “About three months now, I think.”

“Do they know?” There was no judgment in the eldest’s tone, just curiosity and maybe a little eagerness.

“No,” Yunho replied. His attention moved to his hand where Mingi slowly entwine their fingers, his grip secure. “Only San.”

Hongjoong nodded knowingly but said nothing further. Truth to be told, their friends- well, Mingi’s friends for that matter- are still not aware of the nature of their relationship. Three months in, and neither of them had said anything yet. It was something they never got around to discuss and everything seems to go well regardless. They didn’t have to sneak around, they literally live across each other. Their passing interactions in campus can be deemed normal among friends. If Yunho started to join their circle frequently, no one seemed to mind.

San knows because he had walked in on them weeks ago. He knows where Yunho hides his extra key and he sometimes comes over without prior notice. He came at an unfortunate time when Mingi was completely perched on his lap, Yunho’s tongue deep inside his mouth. Yunho almost winced at the ghost pain of Mingi’s teeth biting him when he scrambled away.

Their relationship wasn’t a secret per se. At least that’s what Yunho believes. Mingi doesn’t shy away from him when they’re in public and he seemed comfortable getting pampered with small gestures like letting their pinkies touched or getting kissed in secret corners. He was sure that if asked, neither of them would deny each other. They just aren’t completely ready to let the others in especially when they’re not… official yet. They’re not dating but they are exclusive. Yunho knows they’re both aware of how they feel for each other but considering how they came to be in the first place, a little bit of space and boundary was needed. In fact, they hadn’t even kissed until that day San caught them.

“Come on, let’s dance,” Mingi urged out of blue, already standing up and pulling Yunho back on his legs. “All you did was sit all night. Move a little, will you?” he grumbled.

“Uh- wait,” Yunho looked over to the remaining pair and found Seonghwa waving them away like an exasperated mother waiting to rid of her children.

“We’ll be fine,” Hongjoong slurred with a listless flick of his hand. “You kids enjoy yourselves. More cake for me and Seonghwa.”

Yunho’s attention lingered before Mingi tugged him again and they found themselves in a corner of the dance floor, away from the sea of bodies moving against each other. The music was a lot mellow now compared to hype hip-hop pumping earlier in the evening. Soft, almost lo-fi beats accompanied the Andante melody of the piano, the sweet chilling chimes of Tubular bells flowed after. Yunho found his hands gripping Mingi’s waist, their foreheads pressed together and Mingi’s arms loosely hanging on his shoulders.

“You’re warmer than before,” Yunho murmured, ducking down to kiss his partner’s neck.

Mingi hummed and tilted his head. He smelled strongly of alcohol and sweat, which is no surprise to Yunho. He mentally counted Mingi’s consumption for the night and his list included his first round of mojito, two bottles of beer, a shot of tequila and Mint Julep. Yunho wondered how is he not falling over yet but then again, he does remember that Mingi’s tolerance is nearly on par with his. He recalled the last time he had seen Mingi this smash and that was the first night they slept together.

He can almost hear that sweet yet deep moan coming from his red-bitten lips, feel the heat from his body as Yunho pulled him close. They moved in desperate tandem, skin slicked of sweat and muscles aching. Yunho remembered the white hot pleasure surging in his veins as he met Mingi’s dazed eyes, cheeks flushed and hair clinging to his forehead. Mingi looked like a sin in his bed; a beautiful temptation perfectly laid out for him.

Yunho shook the thoughts away. It’s not helping his situation when he is already trailing kisses all over Mingi’s neck and collarbones. The skin underneath his lips was nearly searing, Mingi’s pulse throbbing and almost audible for his ears. His grip around the younger’s waist tightened and the arms around his shoulders pulled him close. Yunho took a deep breath to collect himself, scenting the subtle punch of Mingi’s perfume. He forced himself to pull away and simply lean on the other man’s shoulder, swaying their bodies along the sensual beat of the music.

They stayed like that for a long time, murmuring stories in each other’s ears and keeping in their own bubble. Yunho was content despite how fast his heart beat in his chest. The hand massaging his nape felt soothing yet firm. It kept him grounded as words were whispered to his ears, kisses pressing against his cheek once in a while. They didn’t know how much time had passed but Wooyoung found them like that, calling their name softly but loud enough to catch their attention.

“Hongjoong said it’s time to go home,” Wooyoung said. “He’s already processing the payment and told me to gather everyone.”

Yunho pulled away from Mingi’s neck and checked the time. It was nearly 2 am. Yunho nodded and straightened himself but he kept one arm around Mingi’s waist. “Let’s go.”

Everyone was already out in the parking lot by the time Hongjoong and Seonghwa exited the gate. Yeosang was leaning against Jongho, whining about something and pouting at their youngest. San was hanging off Wooyoung’s shoulder while Mingi leaned against his car, finally sporting the cardigan Yunho promised him earlier.

“Hyung, it’s really okay,” Yunho insisted.

“We live on the opposite direction and it’s late. We’ll just take a taxi,” Seonghwa protested, phone already out and ready to call the service.

“I’d feel better knowing you’re safe,” Yunho said, voice softening as he met Seonghwa and Hongjoong’s eyes. “Seriously, it’s no trouble at all. Please?”

Seonghwa and Hongjoong exchanged wary glances but they eventually conceded. Mingi ended up on the front seat as not to disturb him when everyone gets dropped off later. It would be difficult later so no one was seated at the 3rd row seats. Wooyoung ended up on Yeosang’s lap while San was on Jongho’s. Hongjoong and Seonghwa sat next to the others and were already dozing off by the time Yunho pulled out of the parking lot. He hopes that no officer was going to pull them aside later considering two of his passengers were not on seatbelts.

Hongjoong and Seonghwa’s apartment was located in Gangnam and that was an extra 20 minutes away from the dorms. Yunho watched the duo enter the unit and only drove off when he saw them enter the elevator. Fortunately, Yeosang and Wooyoung’s dorm was literally just next to San’s and Jongho’s. Wooyoung was fine assisting Yeosang on his own since he was little sober and he also didn’t want to trouble Yunho with sneaking around since it was already pass dorm curfew. On the other hand, Yunho had to carry San on his back because he doesn’t trust neither Choi cousins to make it back to their rooms safely. They went around the backdoor, Jongho assuring him that the lock was broken and with a little bit of jiggling, the door opened with a soft click.

Luckily, Jongho’s room was in the first floor and the furthest from the reception table where the dorm director was. Jongho has a single room so they decided to let San crash there to make sure they don’t get caught. Yunho couldn’t risk using the door again so he sneaked out of the window and jogged back to his car. Honestly, it would’ve been easier if they spend the night at Yunho’s unit but it was the first Sunday of the month and it’s usually allotted for dorm inspection day.

Yunho sighed heavily as he shut the door from the driver’s seat, causing Mingi to stir. “Sorry,” Yunho murmured and leaned over to brush his hair off his forehead. “We’re almost home.”

The drive to their apartment was quiet save for Mingi’s tired snores. Yunho had to support him as they took the elevator because it seemed like the nap during the drive only made him drowsier rather than sober him up. When they made it to his door, Yunho crouched down to slide out the key that Mingi strategically hid under the space of the door.

“Do you want a bath?” Yunho asked as he turned on the lights.

Mingi was leaning against the wall, eyes closed as he nodded. “Yes, please.”

Yunho smiled softly at the sight. He dragged Mingi in the bathroom and sat him on the toilet while he prepared a warm bath for him. When he deemed everything to be ready, he helped the other man strip, unbuttoning his vest and letting himself be used as a support while Mingi took off his painfully tight leather pants. Yunho didn’t mind getting wet as he helped Mingi wash his hair, allowing him to doze off in the water while Yunho massaged his scalp in hopes of easing the headache he was likely going through. After showering, Mingi brushed his teeth while Yunho dried his hair with a hair dryer.

By the time they were done, Mingi all but collapsed on his bed, groaning in protest when Yunho tried to right his position. “You’re gonna end up with a sore neck in the morning,” Yunho chided softly.

“Mmhm,” Mingi groggily nod.

Yunho chuckled as he stood up. He pulled Mingi’s comforter up and checked the heater to make sure it’s in the right setting. Fortunately, Mingi is the type not to get sick when he’s drunk but just in case, Yunho placed a bin beside the bed and used old newspaper as makeshift mats. When all is set and done, he went to the kitchen to get some aspirin and water. He went through the cabinets looking for a tall glass and a saucer, humming a soft tune. A triumph grin curled on his lips as he found one.

Just as he walked to the fridge to fetch a bottle of water, he found a book and small notebook by the counter. Yunho was about to close and put it away, thinking it was just one of Mingi’s review notes, however, he paused when he realized it was a cookbook. Intrigued, Yunho carefully skimmed through the words, his eyes widening at the familiar recipes he saw.

Popcorn chicken, that was what Mingi made last Wednesday while they watched a movie. Tofu stew, Mandu soup, Bossam, pumpkin pancakes- the list goes on. These were the dishes Mingi made for him ever since he started to cook for them both. Yunho turned his attention to the notebook and found them to be hand-written recipes with little scribbles at the margins. Some of them were recipes for the side dishes and others were recipes Mingi likely conjured up on his own judging from the feedbacks on the margin.

“That idiot…” Yunho can’t help but smile, his chest swelling with affection as he turned towards the bedroom where Mingi was probably sleeping. “And here I thought I was down so bad.”

Yunho walked to Mingi’s room, lips pressed together as he caught sight of the man’s sleeping form. He placed the glass on the nightstand and covered it with saucer before kneeling by the bed. Against his better judgment, Yunho brushed away the locks falling over Mingi’s eyes, his finger trailing the soft mounds of Mingi’s cheek and pausing just at the corner of his lips. Yunho swallows dryly.

He feels so much for this man. So, so so much that not even words can ever describe it. Mingi had been a good change in his life and Yunho was so happy when he decided to give them a chance. Their relationship improved immensely and despite the lack of affection in public, Yunho was content. The subtly touches, the reserved smiles, the private moments they shared; they were enough and equally too much. The pressure in his chest was more than welcome every time he sees Mingi. Yunho didn’t even know where it began but he was certain, he didn’t want to see it end.

Yunho leaned his forehead against Mingi, eyes falling shut as he tried to channel every emotion surging in him. His breath came out shaky in every exhale, eyes burning for unknown reasons and lips trembling. He wanted to say more. He wanted to show more to this man and wished he can see himself the way Yunho sees him.

Yunho is so so lucky. He wants this feeling to last longer.

With a shaky breath, Yunho said, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He jerked in surprise when he felt a hand squeezed his own, attention turning towards the man and found their eyes meeting. Mingi blinked at him, gaze bright yet tired, a gentle smile on his lips as he whispered, “Thank you.”

Yunho watched as Mingi slowly got up on his elbow and leaned up to press their lips together. The scent and taste of mint assaulted Yunho’s senses but it all fell inadequate at the feel of Mingi’s soft lips. Yunho allowed his eyes to fall shut, savoring the gentle yet silent exchange. They did nothing more than that, just allowing the contact to linger before they pulled away and stared at each other’s eyes. Yunho could only chuckle before he leaned once more and pecked Mingi’s supple lips.

“Sleep, it’s already late,” he muttered lowly, heart heavy as he helped Mingi lay down once more.

Yunho leaned closer and kissed the crown on his head, lips tingling at the contact. When he pulled away, Mingi was already fast asleep, his grip on Yunho’s hand loosening until it fell listlessly over the bed. The elder clicked his tongue in fond exasperation before he carefully fixed Mingi’s position again and pulled the blanket over him. He lingered by the door, taking his time admiring every detail that was Mingi; from his parted lips, calm breathing, thin lashes and relaxed features.

Yunho exited the apartment quietly.

Morning came in a rush. Yunho blew out a breath, giggling when the steam dissipated with the wind. The weather was cool but there are a certain number of people jogging in the park and walking their dogs. Bright eyes gaped at the now bare trees, pavements filled with scattered dried leave varying from orange, red, and faded green. Autumn was close to ending and winter was very much letting itself known with the bitter cold wind brushing against his cheeks. Yunho paused when a golden retriever sniffed at his legs and then climbed up on him, ignoring the mortified protest of its owner. Yunho assured the lady it was fine and even gave the dog a pat.

Muted footsteps lowly echoed in the empty hallway of their floor. Yunho checked the time on his phone, lips pursed at the hour, 8:09 am. His steps paused at the door before him, giddy as he unlocked the door and welcomed himself. Inside the apartment was quiet and empty, no indication of its owner waking. He went straight to the kitchen and deposited the plastic bag before strolling towards the bedroom. Slowly, the door opened with a creek and Yunho felt his heart melt, a smile immediately on his face.

Mingi laid face down on his bed, his shirt rumpled and discarded on the floor, the blanket kicked off and barely hanging on the edge of the bed. He must’ve felt hot in the middle of his slumber. The glass was already empty and the aspirin was ripped open. Yunho kneeled by the bed, the newspaper crippling under his movement. He tenderly ran his fingers through Mingi’s soft locks, causing the man to stir.

Yunho let out a surprise grunt, narrowly dodging the hand that suddenly swatted towards his way. “What the…”

“unhoooooo…” Mingi moaned, almost in pain. “-ead… hurts…”

“What?” Yunho queried and leaned closer. Mingi groaned and let his other hand flop on his head, causing the blonde to wince at the impact. Yunho set aside the unused bin and swept the newspapers away. “Does your head hurt?”

“Mmhmm,” the younger whined pitifully. His hand blindly reached for something until it landed on Yunho’s lap.

Amused, Yunho let himself be searched, chuckling when Mingi’s hand climbed up from his torso and lightly smacked his face. “Ow,” his giggles muffled by the wandering hand.

Mingi then pat his neck and shoulders, seemingly found his destination and let his hand trail down the elder’s arm until they reached his fingers. Yunho tried to will his heartbeat down and pressed his lips together to stop himself from smiling as Mingi entwined their fingers and gripped him tight. He returned the gesture whole-heartedly and caressed the younger man’s knuckle.

“Do you feel better?” he asked, endeared.

“A little,” came Mingi’s muffled reply.

Yunho could only shake his head, mirth dancing in his eyes. He squeezed Mingi’s hand and brought them to his lips, delighted to hear the surprise noise coming from the other man. Yunho maneuvered his position; biting his lips as he arranged himself from kneeling by the bed to leaning his back against it, folding his legs until he sat cross-legged. He turned to the side and was greeted by a turf of Mingi’s hair. Chuckling, he kissed a spot there before sighing in relief and letting his head fall unto the bed, blank eyes staring at the blank ceiling.

The physical stress of sleeping as late as 3 am and waking up as early as 6 am finally got to Yunho. He welcomed the silence filling his ears, tension gradually easing from his wound up body. The warmth of Mingi’s hand provided a bit of comfort in his unsteady mind and kept him grounded, and away from his thoughts. He was so exhausted- in every aspect of that word.  Yunho allowed his eyes to slip close, the sound of Mingi’s breaths gently lulling him.

Seconds ticked by before a gentle snore was heard.

Yunho realized he fell asleep only when he felt himself being shook awake.

“Yunho, wake up,” told by the groggy and raspy voice. “Yunho, your neck.”

“Hm?”

“Yunho,” Mingi croaked again, coughing at the side from the dryness of his throat. “Climb up the… b-bed… if you wanna… sleep…”

“What?” Yunho forced his eyes to open, blearily searching the dim room. He jerked in surprise at the sudden contact of something pricked his nape, relaxing when it was just Mingi’s hair. “What time is it?”

“Dunno,” Mingi grunted.

Yunho inhaled deeply through his nose and pat his pockets looking for his phone. When he found it, he checked for the time, groaning at the brightness that assaulted his unfocused eyes. It was already pass eleven and Yunho’s hunger immediately made itself known, the rumbling of his stomach echoing in the silent room. Heat climbed to his cheeks, amplifying when he heard Mingi’s giggles.

“Are you up now?” Yunho wiggled their tangled fingers and grimaced at the numbness. Mingi hummed in response. Yunho looked over his shoulder, squinting his eyes to try and make out Mingi’s form. He blinked in surprise when he felt something press at the corner of his mouth, narrowly missing his lips. His shock melted into amusement. “Were you trying to kiss me?” he jested.

“No.” Mingi denied, blindly bumping his head against Yunho’s chin.

Yunho stood up, groaning at the way his joints and spine pop. He tugged Mingi’s hand and coaxed him to get up. “Come on. It’s already noon. You haven’t eaten yet.” When Mingi didn’t even answer, Yunho groaned and untangled their hands. With burning determination combined with hunger, Yunho flipped him over, ignoring the protests as he reached for both hands and pulled Mingi up. “Mingi, come on. I’m hungry.”

“Noooo,” Mingi wailed, letting himself dangle. “I don’t wanna cook.”

“I bought samgyetang and bean sprouts,” Yunho urged. “I also have a hangover reliever for you.”

Mingi promptly stopped protesting and before Yunho knew it, he was falling over, barely catching himself as he fell on the bed. He grunted when arms looped around his neck and tugged him down. “Mi-“

“Have I ever told you you’re the best?” Mingi murmured, sighing as he rubbed his forehead against Yunho’s neck.

“Hmm, not yet,” Yunho grinned. “But you can start now.”

Mingi only hummed and kissed his neck. They stayed like that for a while, Yunho pressing his lips together to stop himself from whimpering at the soreness of holding his own weight. Eventually, they did get up. Yunho threw Mingi’s discarded t-shirt to his face before running to the kitchen and began heating up the packed samgyetang and the bean sprouts. Mingi took it upon himself to look for a drink, whining when he couldn’t open it because apparently, his limbs are noodles and he was suffering from a splitting headache.

When everything was ready, Yunho poured the dish in a big bowl and pulled apart the chicken. Mingi barely touched the chicken and preferred drinking up the soup, rubbing his stomach once in a while and forcing himself to swallow in every gulp. He also nipped at the bean sprouts one at a time while Yunho took bundles and gobbled up his chicken.

They spent the rest of the afternoon holed up in Mingi’s apartment, nursing the hangover he was going through. They both got calls from their friends, Jongho mostly cursing San for moving too much the night before and resulting for a sleepless night for the younger. Yeosang powered through the morning to clean up their dorm while Wooyoung spent puking his guts out in the toilet. Unsurprisingly, their eldest friends were silent and unresponsive.

Yunho figured out why, when he and Mingi dropped by to their apartment to deliver Hongjoong’s forgotten gifts. Let’s say they never scrambled out of the door so fast in their entire lives, hands over their eyes and ears red while a boxer-clad Hongjoong went after them with Seonghwa’s lint roller.

Despite the chaos between their friendships, it felt natural. By next week, they once again packed themselves in Yunho’s car to send Hongjoong off to the airport. He and Mingi pointedly shut their mouths when the eldest duo started a playful banter, pushing each other and denying they’ll miss the other having around. Yunho could tell it was just their way of masking the longing, especially when it seemed like they’re delaying the inevitable yet temporary farewell.

On the way back, Seonghwa was fine and even played with Wooyoung and San. But when they finally got back to his apartment, he paused by the door as if he was expecting someone to follow after him only to realize, there was no one there. The disappointment on the elder’s face was quick but it didn’t go unnoticed to Yunho’s eyes. He and Mingi had only been seeing each other for three months but Yunho knows he’s already attached. He can’t imagine not seeing Mingi even for just a day.

Well, he finally understood what Seonghwa felt when winter break finally came.

Yunho was bored out of his mind. Okay, not really. It’s more like he has something in his mind. Specifically, a certain someone who just sent him a selca while he was bundled up in a puffy beige scarf and a padded coat, pink earmuffs covering his ears, nose bright red, and hooded hair covered with a dust of white snow. Seoul is already coated with a thin layer of cold white sheets while the streets of Gwangju is barren of anything but bitter cold breeze.

On the brighter side, the streets are shining with colorful and gentle glows of Christmas lights, food stalls covering each pavement and the scent of buttery baked goods and hot chocolate filled every street. Yunho is finally home with his family after missing every holiday last year because of club activities. The only thing Yunho is truly sad about is the fact this was his first Christmas with Mingi, and they’re regions apart and not celebrating together.

Facetime is just making him sadder. Mingi looked cute covered in big sweaters and Yunho desperately wants him in his arms and kiss his cheeks and neck repeatedly until he can’t stop giggling. Does the petty whining make him childish? Yes, very much so, admittedly. But does he care enough to save his dignity and hold it in? No, not at all.

“Yunho, it’s just a few days. Seriously, you lasted years not talking to him!” San told him, brows furrowed together and pouting. His screen glitched for a moment and then pixilated when the internet connection was stretched thin. “It’s Christmas eve! Call him on midnight!”

“But what if he’s with his family?” Yunho whined in protest, rolling over his stomach and pulling a pillow under his arms. “I don’t want to interrupt him.” I don’t want to seem clingy.

“Why am I putting up with this…” San moaned in misery.

“San- wait he’s calling!” Yunho exclaimed, shooting up in excitement.

“Bye!” San quipped and blew raspberry at him before cutting off the call.

Yunho was far too thrilled to bid his best friend farewell before his was quickly answering the call, grin too wide to be just happiness. “Mingi! Ah- Mingi, hey,” he pressed his lips together and tried to contain the excitement in his voice. “What made you call?”

“Wait, lemme switch to vide- there.” There was shuffling on the other side and an echo of a honking car heard from a distance.

Yunho stared at the screen, his confusion melting into glee when Mingi’s face appeared, colorful lights reflecting on his skin and clothes. His head was covered by a beanie, his smile just as blinding as the Christmas lights twinkling behind him. Mingi raised the phone higher and a giant Christmas tree was angled for Yunho to see. The younger man was waving a gloved hand at the screen, lips pressed together and letting his little dimple pop.

“I just wanted you to see this, hehe,” Mingi said and showed the entire Christmas tree lit by gold lights and decorated with big balls and sparkling garlands. The streets were lined with star lanterns connected by string lights, brightening up the entire town square. “It’s really beautiful, isn’t it?”

“Yeah… it is,” Yunho nodded, breathless. Mingi looked so cute and endearing, cheeks pink and breath fogging as he giggled. He spun around and pointed the bazaar filling the streets. “What are you doing out there?” Yunho laid back down on his pillow, mesmerized at the way the younger man grinned at him.

“Oh! Ah, my brother forgot to pick up the cake so Mom made me get it,” Mingi answered. He bent down and then showed a plain white box on the screen. “Thankfully, the shop owner is a family friend and waited for me. I was on my home and passed by the bazaar, and I thought- you know, I should show you.”

“Thank you,” Yunho smiled. “It’s really beautiful, Mingi.”

“Oh, you’re welcome.” Mingi fixed the camera again and began walking. “So, how are you over there?”

Yunho giggled and rolled on his back before he switched his camera and pointed it to the window where the streets were empty except for the decorative lanterns and hanging lights. “As you can see, it’s not as busy here,” he switched the camera back to himself and smiled when Mingi beamed at him. “Mom is finishing up dinner and she really kicked me out when I tried to help.”

“She probably didn’t want you to burn anything and waste food,” the younger snickered.

Yunho clenched a fist over his heart, feigning hurt as he curled to himself. “That is so mean! I know how to make bulgogi now, you know!”

“Stirring it only doesn’t count!” Mingi rebutted.

“Mingi~” Yunho whined and let himself flop back down on the bed. “Make fun of me like this, see if I get you anything when I get back.”

Mingi stuck his tongue out playfully. “That’s a lie. You’ll still get me something whether I’ll stop or not.”

Yunho narrowed his eyes. He got me there, damn it. He was brought back to attention when the crunching of the snow stopped, the busy murmuring of the streets no longer audible and he found himself turning to Mingi’s gentle gaze; all the colorful lights was replaced by the warm orange glow of the lantern on the empty street.

“Mingi?” He called softly.

“I know I won’t get the chance later so I’ll just say it now. Merry Christmas, Yunho.”

The excitement in Yunho’s chest immediately turned into something warm and toasty. It was that exact feeling when blowing the steam of a hot chocolate after staying out in the cold for too long. The warmth spreading all over his body and releasing all the tension pulling him taut. Yunho found himself lying limply on the bed, his eyes tracing every detail of Mingi’s features; his shining yet tender gaze, the gentle and fond smile on his red, chapped lips, his flushed cheeks, the little bits of snow dusting his lashes- everything. It felt like Yunho hadn’t seen him for so long, yet the sight of him was familiar.

“Merry Christmas, Mingi.” Yunho murmured. “I wish I could celebrate with you.”

“Me too,” Mingi chuckled. “Next time, for sure.”

Next time. They have a next time. The thought of it alone lifted Yunho’s spirit. He wants that. He wants to be with Mingi far longer than a next time.

“Next time,” Yunho repeated, nodding.

“I’m outside my house now,” Mingi said as he looked over to the direction of his home. “I gotta go. See you?”

Yunho laughed lowly. “Yeah. See you, Mingi.”

It took a while for the younger to hang up, but when he did, Yunho let out a breath. He lowered his phone until it met his lips, eyes shut as he murmured, ‘I miss you.’- wishing he had the courage to say it.

Yunho spent the remaining days finally out of his room and away from video games. Mingi said he had never been to Gwanju before so Yunho took it upon himself to give him a virtual tour, sending him pictures of famous tourist spots in his hometown. He took Mingi to his elementary school and then showed him the park where he used to play. Mingi said he wanted to see Yunho’s baby pictures because of it. Honestly, Yunho wasn’t sure if the humiliation of his childhood was worth the image of Mingi cooing at him.

After Christmas, came Seollal. Mingi sent a picture of him wearing his baby pink jeogori, a hairpin on his faded grey hair that says 공주님. Yunho may have accidentally burned his hand when he hastily poured the rice cakes in boiling water, some of it splattering on his hand. After hissing in pain, his mom once again kicked him out of the kitchen for not paying attention. Yunho didn’t feel too bad though cause he ended up getting more pictures from Mingi after that.

And before they knew it, winter break finally ended.

Yunho was idly rocking on his soles, lips pressed together as he waited for the train to arrive. San said they were close to the platform so Yunho patiently stood by, enjoying a hot cup of t latte. He was actually supposed to pick San up from Namhae and drive them back to Seoul. Unfortunately, his brother drove his car through a blizzard a few nights ago and ended up breaking down in the middle of the road, further damaging the batteries. It was supposed to be picked up tomorrow but Yunho didn’t want to risk getting stuck in the traffic jam since most students will likely travel back to Seoul for the continuation of the semester. Like any responsible older brother, he made his younger brother promise to drive it back to him tomorrow since it was his fault it got damaged in the first place.

“Yunho-yaaaaaaaaaaah~”

Yunho barely caught his balance as San literally hurled himself in his arms. His best friend was giggling and rubbing their cheeks together, clinging tighter and feign purring. Yunho had to grit his teeth and forced himself not to drop to his knees when San bit his shoulder, for no apparent reason.

“I missed you… too,” Yunho stammered and tried to pry him off, hissing when his shoulder throbbed in pain. At least his padded jacket cushioned the bite but it still hurt.

“Did you empty an entire store or something?” San deadpanned as they walked, eyes trained on the big paper bags in his hand. Inside was a variety of snacks and preserved dried fruits he bought at the souvenir shop outside the station. His mom also packed him containers of leftovers and side dishes.

He handed one bag to San; the pink one with a My Melody character waving at the center. “Mom packed some puffed rice and sweet rice cakes for you. There’s also some kimchi and other side dishes, too.”

San’s eyes lit up in joy and he took no time snatching the bag from Yunho. “Wah, your mom is the best!” Then he slid his backpack to his front and rummaged inside. “Mom made marinated crab and abalone. Dad also put roasted chestnuts and dried persimmons in there. He prepared it himself!” he proclaimed proudly and handed Yunho four sealed containers which he put in one of the bags.

They looked over as their bus finally arrived. Both of them sat at the back as to not disturb other passenger since they have the last stop in Seoul. San showed him pictures of their family activities and was proud to relay that he helped make kimchi with his sister and mother. He even showed Yunho a picture of himself holding a cabbage, kimchi sauce smeared across his cheek and eyebrow.

Yunho, on the other hand, told him their trip to the hot springs and was disappointed to say he forgot to buy some steamed eggs for them to snack on. San pouted but immediately perked up when Yunho remembered he packed some dragon egg sandwich, which they ate at the first rest stop. The closer they were to the city, the thicker the snow became. San finally took out his beanie and pulled it down until it covered his ears. Yunho was halfway to wrapping a scarf around his neck when he felt his phone vibrate.

오후  04:26 Hey, did you guys leave already?

Yup! We’re actually half-way. 오후  04:26

Jeonju! 오후  04:27

Miss me already? 오후  04:27

오후  04:27 You wish! LOL

오후 04:27 You ought to be careful though.

Hmm? 오후  04:28

Why? What’s wrong? 오후  04:28

오후  04:28  There was a blizzard last night.

오후  04:28   Some roads are probably still blocked.

오후  04:28   Also, it’s going to rain later

오후  04:29   maybe around the same time you’ll enter Seoul.

Ah, that can’t be good.

“Sannie?” Yunho called, eyes still on his phone.

“Hmm?” San hummed and turned to him, wide eyed and curious.

“Do you have an umbrella?” the elder asked as he went to Naver and checked the weather forecast.

“Uh, yeah. Mom didn’t want me to leave without bringing one. Why?”

Yunho opted to show him the weather report rather than answer. It was going to rain approximately in 2 hours, just about the same estimation they’ll cross Seoul. Honestly, the rain itself wasn’t a problem. It was the fact it was going to rain at this temperature, -5°. There’s a really high chance that ice will form down the road and it might delay their travel since the risk of accidents were a lot higher.

Times like this, Yunho wished he had his car. They could’ve saved at least half an hour by using the high way.

“Oh? Looks like someone’s worried,” San murmured, eyes fleeting towards Yunho, a smirk already on his lips.

Yunho turned the screen back to him, reading Mingi’s message from the notification bar.

민기: just be careful... 오후  04:33

민기: I haven’t see…  오후  04:33

Yunho certainly hoped that the red on his ears was because of the cold and not because of how flustered and shy he felt. He ignored San’s teasing hums and tapped the chatbox open.

[민기]

오후  04:33  just be careful, okay?

오후  04:33  I haven’t seen you in a long time and I don’t want it with you in the hospital or something.

오후  04:33   text me when you get close.

오후  04:33  Send my regards to Sannie, too.

Will do. 오후  04:33

See you later. 오후  04:33

“Are you that happy with just a text?”

Yunho jumped at the sudden inquiry, turning to his best friend whose jesting was replaced by something akin to fondness.

“You should really see the look on your face.”

His face? Yunho tapped his cheeks and checked his hand in case some sort of dirt was smudged on his skin. All he felt was heat, skin tight and his cheek bones aching. “What?”

San rolled his eyes. “You get all soft-eyed and smiley,” he grimaced. “It’s weird seeing you this happy.”

Yunho’s brows shot up, a pout forming on his lips. “Is that a problem?”

“Not really,” San waved towards his phone. “It’s just that… you’re not like this with other people. And I mean, like a big difference. Your face really says it all.”

“Well, other people are not my friends,” Yunho retorted.

“Well, so was Mingi,” San pointed. “Yunho, you have this passive-aggressive nature when you’re with anyone, and when you’re with us you’re like a bear-puppy retriever especially with Hongjoong.” San pursed his lips as he spared a glance at the side, hesitant. “But when you’re with Mingi, it’s just a whole different side of you- even way before you two got close. It suddenly reminded me of how hooked you were when we were just freshmen.”

Freshman. Nearly three years ago. Yunho blinked, mind blank. He can barely remember how he was when he was a first year. He likely doesn’t even realize his own actions, so he clearly has no idea what San was referring to. The confusion must’ve been apparent on his face because San groaned and rolled his eyes in exasperation.

“How was I… before?” Yunho ended up asking.

San pressed his lips together and gestured towards him as if that answered everything. “I don’t know if you noticed but… Mingi was all you talked about after you saw him play,” he took a deep breath. “Yunho, you never missed a single game after he became officially part of their lineup. Even if you ended up watching halfway, you’d still go.”

Well, that was true. The memory was immediately pulled out his mind. After classes, he’d go watch every practice game when he can. Heck, even after his own games, he’d come running to the location just to watch Mingi’s match, usually dragging San with him, much to the younger’s chagrin and amusement. There was nothing wrong with it though… right? Yunho just liked seeing him play and he was especially proud that Mingi’s hard work finally paid off- it honestly had nothing to do with the fact he was happy to see Mingi happy after he elusively cried in the locker room.

Apparently, San wasn’t done. “When you got paired in lab, you were gushing about how smart and patient he was,” he then made this ridiculous expression of cupping his cheeks and fluttering his eyes. “You wouldn’t stop talking about how he taught you how to solve the Pythagorean Theorem and helped you with your floor plan and blueprint draft.”

“Okay, but-“

“Not to mention, how disappointed you were when he retired early.” San then threw a petulant glare towards him. “You were down so bad, you probably couldn’t even tell. You looked so lost every time you see him.” San sighed heavily and squeezed his thigh in comfort. “I felt so bad for you, you know? Especially when you stopped trying.”

“I tried to get close to you even after that but the opportunity never came. I tried to talk to you at the court but I can’t tell you the things I wanted to say. Eventually… I just… you know… let it go.”

Has he always been like that? Oh, Yunho has been so clueless.

He had watched Mingi from afar, slowly gaining confidence and breaking out of his shell especially when Jung Wooyoung and Kang Yeosang started coming in the picture. Mingi’s reserved personality was still there but his confidence began to surface bit by bit, and Yunho wasn’t sure whether he liked his shy smile more or his playful smirk. Yunho, despite himself, tried to approach him as well. He tried to tell Mingi how well he played and how interesting it was to watch him on court but every time he tried to come close, Yunho just shut down. It’s like he couldn’t even take one step forward no matter how much he wanted to run.

“Just say hi?” San had told him after Yunho expressed his struggle and confusion.

Just say hi, he says. If it was that easy Yunho could’ve said it multiple times by then, but he hasn’t. Nothing about Mingi was intimidating, like at all. He was a tall man with fierce eyes and a deep husky voice but his whole demeanor was just the opposite of his appearance. Cute, that was the first thing that crossed Yunho’s mind when one day Mingi entered the classroom clad in a big grey knitted sweater with the sleeves covering his entire hand, glasses changed from thick black borders to thin-golden frame, red hair dyed into brown and falling over his eyes.

They remained silent for the rest of the ride. San eventually fell asleep on Yunho’s shoulder. Yunho, on the other hand, fell in his own thoughts. Now that the memory was triggered, all he could do was recall those days. When they crossed the borders of Seoul, a drizzle of rain began to fall.

Will do. 오후  04:33

See you later. 오후  04:33

We just entered Mapo-gu오후  06:51

I’ll be home오후  06:54

오후  06:54 I’ll be here.

Suddenly, it just hit him hard. A heavy and overwhelming feeling settled in his chest. There were no words to describe that sensation. All he could do was bear it, hand clenching his chest as he let it burden him. The rain poured harder, droplets cascading down the window and blurring the twilight streets of Seoul. He watched the orange setting sun pass the horizon, dark blue and pink fading in the sky. Yunho couldn’t help himself, tracing familiar syllables on the steam coated glass.

“I never told you but I’ve always got that feeling when you two suddenly got close again.” San paused by the entrance of the bus, umbrella already at hand. “When I caught you guys, did you ever wonder why I wasn’t as surprise as I should be?” he pursed his lips together and glanced at Yunho, who waited patiently for him to continue. “Yunho,” San called tightly. “I don’t want to get ahead of you but… what you felt for him- what you feel for him… has been very apparent from the beginning.”

“San-“

“I’m your friend, okay?” he said softly, ducking his head in mortification when the driver called them out for stalling. “I don’t mind hearing you gushing over him.” He opened his umbrella and finally got down the bus, waiving at Yunho when the door began to close. “Hopefully, I can finally tease you for having a boyfriend.

Yunho bit his lips to stop himself from smiling. “Why are you acting like you’re so cool? We’ll see each other tomorrow.”

San only stuck his tongue out and waved at him while the bus drove away. Yunho watched him fondly, sighing to himself as he thought about San’s words. The rain had yet to yield but his stop was just at the next block. He didn’t have an umbrella with him and he hoped that he can run fast enough without getting too soaked or slip on the pavement. As soon as he exited the bus, Yunho sprinted towards the waiting shed, shaking the droplets on his hair and shivering at the cold.

The apartment complex was just a good 30 seconds run from the bus stop but Yunho couldn’t help but lament on the thin layer of ice and snow coating the pathway. He stared longingly at the inviting entrance of the complex, already feeling the warm and toasty heater on his skin. He was actually doing a good job at talking himself into making a break for it.

“Yup. Just do it,” he told himself. He took a deep breath and tightened his grip on the bag on his hand. He rocked on his feet, ignoring the water seeping in his shoes. Just as he was gearing up to run, Yunho found himself nearly falling back when something caught his elbow. “Wha…”

“Do you want your skull to break open or something?”

Yunho froze. He could only stare in disbelief as a black umbrella went over his head, the hand around his elbow loosening and looping itself in his arm. He turned to his side, eyes widening even more when he was greeted by Mingi’s disappointed pout.

“What are you doing here?” Yunho asked as he stood properly and took his time looking over the other man. He frowned in concern. Mingi was wearing a white hoodie under his open white padded jacket but below he was only wearing shorts and slippers. “Why did you go out wearing only that? Do you want to freeze?”

Mingi passed the umbrella to him and Yunho took it without a pause, only to yelp when he got slapped on the chest before the umbrella was taken away from him and Mingi began to urge him to walk.

“I just went to buy chocolate milk and ramyeon from the convenience store.” He jerked his chin across the street where a 7 Eleven was and showed the plastic bag in his hand. “I just happened to see you when I got out.”

Yunho assessed him once again. His bare legs were wet and likely numb from the cold, a deep flush was across his face, also likely from the cold, and his hair was somewhat damp. Yeah, Yunho wasn’t buying that. He didn’t just so happen to be there just as Yunho arrived. Mingi hates the cold. He’s not gonna go out wearing measly clothes just to buy snacks from the convenience store across the street when he can make a tasty soup even with whatever he has in his fridge. The thought amuses Yunho.

He trailed his hand down until they reached Mingi’s, flinching as his warm skin touched Mingi’s colder hands. He tangled their fingers together, resisting the urge to bring them to his lips and blow some warmth on them. The lobby welcomed them out of the cold. In the privacy of the elevator, Yunho took his time rubbing some friction to warm Mingi’s red and numb hands, much to the younger’s annoyance and amusement. Mingi’s hair smelled of his menthol shampoo with a hint of watery snow and earthy rain.

“Oh, I missed you!” Yunho cooed and nuzzled his cheek on against Mingi’s.

Mingi rolled his eyes but welcomed him nonetheless. “It hasn’t been that long and we’ve been calling each other nearly every day.”

“Hm, don’t care. Nothing beats the real thing,” Yunho protested against his shoulder as he draped himself on Mingi. “Missed you so much,” he muttered once more, his cold lips trailing towards Mingi’s exposed nape.

Yunho took great delight when he felt the younger shiver but before he could call him out on it, the doors finally opened and Mingi all but dragged him to their rooms. Mingi made a move to go back to his unit but Yunho yanked him inside his own. If he can, he’d throw him over his shoulder just to make sure he doesn’t run away- not that Mingi would. If anything, he’s quite compliant being dragged around.

“Yunho?” Mingi asked, uncertain. He ran his fingers through the elder’s hair and pat his head. Yunho didn’t answer and just hugged him tighter. “You should change or you’ll get sick.” When he got no reply, Mingi groaned. “Yunho, I’m wet.”

“Just a bit more,” Yunho protested.

Mingi chuckled and rolled his eyes. He waddled towards the kitchen and placed the plastic bag there. He also reached out and took the paper bags from Yunho’s hands. The elder briefly broke off in order to shrug off his bag and drop it on the floor, before he was plastering himself back to Mingi. They stood at the kitchen in silence. At some point, they swayed as though there was music playing only for them to hear. Mingi rested his hand over the arm around his waist. He leaned back on Yunho’s shoulder and let his eyes fall shut.

Yunho’s breath felt loud in his ears. The room felt so cold and no matter how much he tried to burrow himself in Mingi’s heat, it’s not working. He needs more. Yunho rested his cheek and Mingi’s shoulder and took his time admiring his features from the angle. Feeling his gaze, Mingi turned and their eyes met. Yunho’s eyes zeroed to his dry and pale lips. They looked kind of cold and lonely in his eyes. Swallowing thickly, Yunho’s locked eyes with Mingi again and found he was just as drawn.

Yunho found himself tilting Mingi’s head and before he knew it, his eyes were falling shut, lips pressed against his own. Mingi faced him without the kiss breaking apart, wrapping his arms around Yunho’s neck and pulling him close. Mingi’s lips were cold and rough, and just as desperate. He was breathing heavily, moving his lips fast and unwilling to break away.

Yunho can feel his fingers through his hair and grunted when Mingi tugged them. Yunho nipped at his bottom lip in retaliation, only to lick them as an apology. The air felt so stuffy and thick as they breathe against each other’s lips. Yunho felt himself sweating in his layers so he slid his coat off and let it pool on the floor. He sucked on Mingi’s bottom lip, prying them open and prodded his tongue between the seams of his lips. A moan rumbled from his throat when Mingi suddenly sucked on it.

“Shit… Mingi,” Yunho grunted as they broke apart. He cupped Mingi’s cheeks and pulled him back again, pressing his tongue deeper in the younger’s mouth and licking the roof of his mouth, swallowing the weak moans he lets out.

Yunho’s chest felt so tight and his lungs burn, throat dry. It’s so hot. Mingi reciprocated with the same fervor, if not more; tugging Yunho’s hair, pressing their chest together and chasing Yunho’s lips. They had yet to let up despite the lack of air in their lungs. Hands wondered, groping and just feeling each other in flesh. Yunho got a little too brave and let his hands travel below Mingi’s shirt, feeling his heating skin and gripping his waist.

Breaking apart felt like surfacing from deep waters, so close to drowning and fainting from the lack of air. They panted against each other lips, eyes glazed and cheeks flushed. Mingi’s eyes fluttered close and he nuzzled into the warmth of Yunho’s hand, tilting his head down to kiss his palm. Yunho’s heartbeat was palpitating and erratic. He caressed Mingi’s heating cheek tenderly. The younger’s lips were bright red and lined with Yunho’s teeth marks, shining with spit.

“Will you stay?” Yunho asked gruffly.

“Do you want me to?” Mingi asked back, rough yet layered with desperation. He placed a hand over Yunho’s and squeezed, as if willing him to read his mind and know the right answer.

Yunho didn’t have to think twice, though. He was resolute. “I want to,” he answered and brought their lips together again, tilting Mingi’s head to meet him. “Stay with me… tonight.” He bit the younger’s lip, the surprised moan shooting straight to his gradually filling arousal. “I want you close to me.”

“Okay,” Mingi exhaled. “I’ll stay.”

Mingi is beautiful. Yunho couldn’t be fault for getting drawn to someone as pure and amazing as him. Everything about him was perfect. From the way his lips parted, to his bright eyes, shy smile- everything. Yunho tilted his head aside and kissed his neck, feeling his pulse under his lips. He can feel every twitch and heave under his fingers.

It’s so hot. Yunho felt like suffocating. He sucked at the other’s sweaty neck, unmindful of the salty tang hitting his tastebuds. He took his time marking up Mingi’s neck, kissing his skin and biting them until dents formed. He trailed his hands from his flexing stomach, feeling the dip of his soft abs and muscles. The elder’s lips moved lower, leaving short kisses and kitten licks on his way down and only lingered when he reached Mingi’s beating chest. Mingi grunted as he writhe against the bed, legs tightening around Yunho’s waist and fingers mussing up his own grey hair.

Yunho can’t see it but he can feel the heat reaching his face. There was already a sheen of sweat coating Mingi’s body, his eyes bright with unshed tears. His already bruised lips trapped between his teeth and hair sticking to his forehead. Yunho gathered him in his arms and kissed his temple. His heart clenched tightly when Mingi whimpered. Yunho ground their arousal, moaning low and airy at the friction.

He couldn’t wait anymore. It’s been too long.

Yunho got up and reached for his nightstand, pulling out a bottle of lube and dropping it by Mingi’s head. He rummaged further only to click his tongue in frustration. “Fuck, I don’t have a condom.”

Kinda forgot that he doesn’t actually keep a stash of it. Never had, never will… well, maybe he should start from now on.

Mingi scoffed as he reached for the bottle and flicked it open with his thumb. “It’s not like we haven’t done this before.” He poured lube into his hand and warmed it up before stroking his own aching cock, sighing at the sensation. “You’re very generous, aren’t you?” he quirked an eyebrow towards the nearly empty bottle.

Yunho protested petulantly. “You have no idea about the things I think about when it’s just me and my hand.” He bat Mingi’s hand and replaced it with his own, squeezing the base of his dick and flicking the tip. A devious smile curved at his lips when he felt Mingi’s thighs tremble.

“Oh, please, do let me know,” Mingi retorted sarcastically, his breath hitching as Yunho increased the pace. “I… I’m so curious- hah…”

Instead of retorting, Yunho gripped his chin and kissed him. His grip around Mingi tightened as he continued to pump his cock, the wet sound and sensation going straight to his own aching dick. Their tongue mingled and licked each other. Yunho shuddered as Mingi began to suck, tentative and shy at first but when Yunho bit him, he sucked harder and pulled the elder down until their sweaty chest met. Yunho moaned and accidentally bit Mingi’s tongue, breaking them apart.

“Fuck... hah… sorr- shit…” Yunho’s head fell back in pleasure when he felt a hand around him.

Mingi eyed his cock with unfocused eyes, trailing his fingers on the protruding veins and squeezed the underside of the tip by making a ring with his thumb and pointer. The younger man slowly sat up until he was straddled on Yunho’s lap, then he gently coaxed Yunho to lie down.

“You know, it’s been a while since I’ve done this,” Mingi muttered and peered at him with a knowing glance.

“Done what?” Yunho grunted and bucked his hips along Mingi’s pumping, lips falling open in bliss.

“Put a cock in my mouth,” Mingi answered without a beat. He playfully slapped Yunho’s thigh before letting go, opting to slowly grind against Yunho’s abdomen. He sighed at the hands gripping his waist. “Wanna try?” he tilted his head and stuck his tongue out.

Yunho groaned and smacked his head against the pillows, half-thankful for the cushion. “Yes, please,” he whined, only to moan when a weight settled on his heavy cock, grinding slow yet smoothly.

Mingi grinned. “Not shy anymore?”

“It would be stupid to refuse an offer like that,” Yunho grumbled. “C’mere,” he pouted and pulled Mingi down until their lips met.

“Eager?” Mingi muttered against their mouths.

“You have no idea,” Yunho rolled his eyes, attention shifting as Mingi slid lower until he was on his stomach between Yunho’s legs. “If I didn’t feel so guilty jerking off thinking about you, my dick would probably be useless by now.”

Mingi paused, eyes fleeting back to Yunho’s in surprise. “You think about me?”

Yunho’s eyes melted at the apparent disbelief and shyness on his features. “More often than you can imagine,” he admitted, thumb tenderly caressing the flush across his cheeks. “I think about you when I wake up, before I sleep. Heck, seeing my high scores in exams makes me think of you,” he ran his fingers through Mingi’s hair, a fond smile on his lips. “You’re in my mind a lot more than you think you are. Sometimes it drives me crazy… but more often than not, I don’t question it. Wanna know why?”

“Why?”

“Because thinking about you makes me happy.”

Yunho didn’t know it was possible, but the flush on Mingi’s cheeks just darkened even more and his lips began to tremble. The mortification just continued to eat the younger man and he ended up resting his on Yunho’s thigh, a pout on his lips.

“Don’t say cheesy stuff when I’m about to give you a blowjob. Now, I’m embarrassed.” He slapped Yunho’s thigh this time.

Yunho could only shake his head and chuckle. He pulled Mingi back on top of him and pressed their lips together in a playful kiss. Then, he switched their position, smiling down at the younger’s petulance. Yunho reached for the lube once more and poured it over his fingers. He mischievously peered at Mingi as he tapped his right thigh. Getting the message, Mingi brought his right leg over Yunho’s shoulder, jerking in surprise when teeth nipped the inside of his thighs. His poor lips bruised and red from all the abuse of his teeth as Yunho lapped on the forming mark.

Yunho continued to nibble and mark up Mingi’s legs, their gazes never breaking even when Yunho’s fingers began to breach Mingi’s hole. It was tight and dry, even with the lube. Yunho wasn’t deterred, however. If there’s one thing he was known for, it was his patience. Plus, watching Mingi get worked up on his fingers alone was more than satisfying. Especially when Yunho started to twist and crook his fingers. It was a long prep since it’s been so long for both of them. Yunho needed to calm down. The last thing he wanted was to make this hurt. Mingi admitted to touching and stretching himself but he doesn’t do it as often and he could only use two fingers at most before his wrist decides to protest.

No worries, Yunho can make up for it.

Yunho slipped a third and continued to prod that little bump that had Mingi shaking and pulling the sheets. Their mingling breaths sounded deafening. Yunho felt so dizzy from the sweat, nerves oversensitive despite the lack of touch. It felt as though he can feel every sweat dripping from his forehead and back, every bits of oxygen entering his lungs. He trembled.

Aah…” Mingi sighed as his arced off the bed, hips rolling into the fingers stretching him open.

“Good?” Yunho asked gruffly, pushing deeper and wiggling with what little room he has.

Mingi grits his teeth, head lightly hitting against the pillows. Hash pants left his lips, chest heaving and flushed red. Mingi continued to silently writhe, refusing to let any noise leave him. His mouth fell open and eyes shut. His cock bobbed weakly, precum dripping from the tip and smearing his stomach.

“Yunho…?” Mingi whimpered and suddenly reached his hand, gripping his wrist until his nails dug through the skin. “I’m gonna come.”

Yunho leaned down and pressed a kiss on his trembling lips. Despite not doing anything, Yunho felt breathless. His own neglected dick finally grinding down against Mingi’s, prompting a moan from them. Yunho hissed at the sting, his mouth clamping down on the younger’s throat and stretching the skin with his teeth. He pulled his fingers out and reached for the lube again, pouring the rest over his cock and shivering at the sudden cold. He gently lowered Mingi’s leg from his shoulder and wrapped them both around his waist as he finally sheathed his cock in the younger’s tight heat.

“Slowly… please,” Mingi sobbed, forcing his body to relax.

Yunho could only grunt and fist the sheets. As soon as he was fully in, he let out the breath he was holding, chest heaving and unfocused eyes staring at the ceiling. It was so tight and so hot. Mingi’s grip on his hand tightened and somehow, the pain only added to the stimulation. Yunho fell forward, mouth immediately sucking on the other man’s chest, tongue lapping on his nipples like an animal dying to have flesh in its mouth. Yunho sucked carefully, knowing it was going to sting afterwards. He nipped on those little buds while his hips rolled shallowly.

“Yunho…!” Mingi keened and pressed himself firmly on Yunho’s eager mouth. He tried to meet Yunho’s meek thrust but he was pinned to the bed, unable to move and placed to take what was given to him.

Yunho suddenly broke away and sat up. He eyed Mingi down like a predator consumed by hunger. In spite of his rash actions, he gently pried Mingi’s hand off his own but he didn’t even bother to mutter an apology when he suddenly gripped his thighs and dragged him until their hips met, and Yunho was buried deep inside. Mingi’s eyes flew open and he nearly sat up on the bed in surprise, had Yunho not pin his hips down and spread his legs further.

Mingi’s expression twisted and a heavy hand suddenly smacked Yunho’s bare shoulder. “I told- ah… hah!- s-lowly…” his fingers tugged and twisted his grey hair, ears red and thin tears gleaming from his eyes.

Yunho can feel himself shake and there’s this white noise filling his ears as Mingi clamped down on him. He peppered the other’s neck with fleeting kisses, tongue lapping on his sweaty and bruised skin. Yunho rest his head on his shoulder as he continued to thrust, groaning low and rough at the friction. He can hear Mingi’s heartbeat over his harsh breathing, hands roaming along his back and legs pulling him close.

God, was it addicting. Every breath he takes hurts, his lungs closing up and constricting in his chest. Mingi frantically whimpered, thrashing on the bed as Yunho pushed deeper and kept his thrust shallow, making sure to stimulate the younger’s prostrate. He nosed on Mingi’s neck, inhaling the musk oozing him from him. His tongue darted out, nibbling lightly and forming faint bruises he can count and admire for later. He moved up when he felt his hair getting tugged, a surprise noise rumbling from his throat as lips met his.

Mingi surely returned the favour, pushing his tongue in and sucking Yunho’s. His legs tightened around Yunho’s hips, fingers delicately holding his head up as they kissed. His chest heaved rapidly, audible pants and gasped escaping from his parted and shiny lips. Yunho could barely keep himself in check. He wanted nothing more than move; fuck Mingi stupid, rip more pleasurable noise from him, make him come over and over again until he passes out and they do it again.

He wanted nothing more but make a mess out of him; wreck him.

Grip tight, he brought Mingi’s legs back to his shoulders once more and clutched those thighs close to his chest. The first pull had them both shaking, tentative and careful only to push back in speedily. They were both already drench in sweat, the room stuffy and heavy. Mingi’s hands flew over his head, twitching every now and then as Yunho continued to thrust inside him. He moaned loud and long, whimpered weakly or sob. Yunho didn’t know which he liked best.

Mingi looked so alluring under him; he had been ever since Yunho first had him. Seeing him so open and willing like this just lit the fire pooling in his belly. He couldn’t help but moan at the tight squeeze, jostling Mingi’s pliant body with his thrust. He lowered those legs and then gathered the man in his arms, holding him tight as he buried his cock deep in his body, growling at the pinpricks of nails raking down his back. It’s going to be a nasty split on the skin but Yunho could barely give a thought about it, savouring the extra sensation mixing with his pleasure.

“Hah… hah… Y-yunho…hng- ah!” Mingi moaned and nuzzled on his shoulder, damp breath hitting Yunho’s heating skin.

He lightly nipped on the younger’s Adam’s apple and sucked a harsh bruise near his pulse point. Mingi wailed on his shoulder, body trembling and clinging so hard. He grabbed Mingi’s waist and pinned them down on the mattress, his partner crying out and tried to arch away from him. But Yunho was persistent and very, very cruel at times.

“Stay,” he grunted gruffly just as he pistoned his hips hard, a resounding smack following after.

Mingi sobbed and nodded mindlessly.

Yunho, despite his rough movements, tenderly wiped the tears streaming down the younger’s flushed cheeks. He kissed his sweat matted forehead then the slope of his sharp nose until he reached his bruised lips. Mingi whined and pulled him closer, Yunho grunting at the sudden show of strength, his thrust faltering for a moment. He abruptly pulled out and kissed Mingi as a consolation.

“Hands and knees,” he rasped, chest heaving hard. He can feel sweat dripping from his temple down to his chin and he resisted the urge to wipe them away, keeping his eyes on the other man who seemed to register Yunho’s words.

His back was burning and his arms were nearly numb from their place under Mingi but he paid no mind to them, watching with heated eyes as the younger finally obeyed and turned on his stomach, albeit sluggishly. His breath hitched and he can feel his dick twitch at the sight. Yunho swallowed thickly, a poor attempt to soothe his dry throat. He splayed his hand over the wide expanse of the younger’s unmarked back, eyes narrowing at the heat radiating from his skin and nearly burning his hand. Fuck, he’s so gorgeous.

Yunho’s eyes fleeted lower, eyeing the redness at the mounds of Mingi’s ass and the thin sheen of lube coating his thighs. He thumbed the puffy rim, playing with the wet entrance. He glanced at his partner, noticing his tense shoulders and lack of vocal response. Yunho clicked his tongue.

“Mingi,” he called, voice firm. Mingi tensedl. “Don’t bite your lip.” He couldn’t see, but he could tell. “Let me hear you,” he pressed his thumb in Mingi’s ass, humming in appreciation when the finger slipped easily.

Mingi whimpered weakly, clenching the sheets under his hands.

Yunho rut his cock between the cracks, holding Mingi’s waist as a leverage. He moaned deep in his throat, the head catching at the rim but never slipping. Mingi was shaking but he didn’t beg. Yunho had no problem with that. He reached further up and took one pillow, slipping it under Mingi who easily dropped his weight on the soft cushion. Yunho lead his cock and pressed slowly, savouring each drag of the tight heat engulfing him. He watched Mingi take him in, his rim stretching and ass swallowing Yunho’s girth. He groaned at the sight, the thought of simply ramming in was too pleasing in his head.

Deep breaths, Jeong Yunho. Deep breaths. You’re getting way too excited.

When his pelvis made contact with Mingi’s ass, they both a sighed in relief. Yunho’s thrust were shallow, barely moving but stimulating the younger man’s prostate. He pressed his thumbs on the perineum, groaning in pleasure when he was squeezed. Mingi was letting out soft sighs and weak moans, barely staying in conscious from the amount of stimulus his sensitive body received. It was a miracle he hadn’t come yet. He burrowed deeper in the covers, inhaling the comforting scent of floral detergent on the fabric. His eyes fluttered close, body loosening only to let out a sharp yelp as he was suddenly yanked up and Yunho was pressing deep inside.

“Ahh!” he screamed into the pillow, Yunho’s bare chest plastered on his back. “Y-yunho… Yunho!”

“How… do you- feel?” Yunho asked, voice hoarse and throat dry. His head fell back at the tightness clinging around him. “Fuck,” he moaned, long and drawn out.

“C-close… so close…” Mingi sighed and trembled on the sheets. “Keep going.”

Mingi’s moans grew loud and raw from all the noises he’s been letting out. Yunho crept a hand under his chest and pinched his nipple, nearly causing the younger’s knees to buckle. There was just too much, too much for him to handle. Mingi been going in and out of awareness for some time now but the sudden assault of pleasure all over his body forcibly dragged him out of his headspace, barely sinking him back in and keeping him afloat.

Mingi felt so tired but he didn’t want it to end just as much. His cock was begging for release; rubbing insistently against the pillow, arms and shoulders sore from carrying his weight. At the back of his mind, he can feel bruises forming on his knees. Yunho wouldn’t let up, fucking him nearly through the bed if it wasn’t for the pillow keeping him up.

“That’s it, take it,” Yunho grunted against his ear, his thrusts becoming powerful, enough to jostle his body and punching gasped out of his mouth. “You’re so pretty like this,” he suckled on the skin on Mingi’s nape. “Want you to see yourself. Want you to see me wreck you over and over.”

“Please…” he begged, weakly grasping the hand on his chest. “Please, please, I want to come.”

It’s so good, it’s just so good. Despite how little Yunho heed to his words, he doesn’t seem to disregard Mingi’s carnal needs; never letting up his touches and spewing sugar compliments to his ears. He makes sure Mingi receives just as much as he takes. His voice sounded rough to his ears but his touch was gentle, savouring. It’s as if he wanted to map every inch of Mingi’s body and engrave it to memory.

“Shit- ah, shit. Don’t just tighten up like that,” Yunho cursed. “Ah, I’m gonna come.” His hand on Mingi’s chest slid down and then both of his arms were around the younger man’s waist. “Fuck, Mingi- I’m gonna come.”

“Please, do it,” Mingi cried. “Please, I can’t take it a-anymore… please. S’too much.”

Yunho’s thrusts faltered and his throat tightened, body seizing as his gaze fell on the younger man. Mingi was looking at him over his shoulder, fingers gripping his ashen locks all rumpled and messy, lips glistening, eyes teary and cheeks glowing a healthy shade of red up to the tips of his ears. He looked so close to breaking and something alluring was shining in his eyes.

Temptation.

What an addicting thing it was. Mingi was the very embodiment of Yunho’s temptation. He felt an animalistic urge clawing at him; just keep going, take take take take everything from this man. It reminded him of six months ago, the second time he had taken Mingi. He remembered the unadulterated need to have him; make him feel good in every way possible and swallow his pleasured cries. This time, it felt different. Stronger, more intense- desperate. He felt his chest constrict, overwhelmed both physically and emotionally.

Fiery heat brewed in his belly, his own noises mixing with Mingi’s pleas. He couldn’t take it anymore. Wordlessly, he grabbed Mingi’s leaking cock and jerked according to his thrust. The moan he let out was so satisfying. Yunho groaned and pistoned his hips harder, feeling his abdomen coil tighter and tighter, restricting his airways and had him gasping desperately. It was so wet and so deliciously good. Strings of broken moans escaped from their lips. Yunho can feel his legs tremble, cock heavy and ready for release. He was so close.

“Mingi,” he moaned as buried his cock deep inside, letting out a deep grunt before he abruptly pulled out and came all over Mingi’s ass and thighs. Mingi soon followed, moving his hips to chase his orgasm, body taut and lips parted into a silent cry. “Mingi,” Yunho called softly, breathless and shaky.

Mingi barely hummed in return. His arms gave up on him, letting him drop on the bed with his ass still up. Audible breaths filled the room, white noise filling their ears. Mingi couldn’t focus on Yunho anymore, body screaming at him to stay still and savour the afterglow of their coupling. He barely reacted when Yunho gently turn him on his back. Butterfly kisses rained on his face, a warm yet clammy hand cupping his cheeks and praises flooding his ears.

Yunho collapsed beside him, boneless and practically in bliss. He pulled Mingi’s shaking form next to him, cradling his head and pressing a kiss on his damp temple. Yunho himself trembled at the contact, body hot and so sensitive, he can almost feel goosebumps rise despite how tight his skin felt.

“You’re so incredible,” Yunho murmured against his neck. Mingi only whimpered and scooted closer, nuzzling on Yunho’s neck and peppering them with kisses. “Amazing…”

“I’m so tired…” Mingi whined weakly, muffled by the skin against his lips.

Yunho laughed lowly and bump his cheek on Mingi’s hair. “Did I go too hard?” he flinched at the weak smack on his chest. “Guess I did. Bath?”

“Later,” Mingi grumbled. He swung his leg across Yunho’s body and curled next to him. “Missed you.”

Yunho’s gaze softened. “Me too.” You have no idea.

They basked in each other’s presence for a bit more, their soft breaths mingling and filling the silent room. Mingi kept tracing formless shapes on his chest, his nail lightly scraping his skin and leaving faint pink marks. Yunho didn’t mind. He simply stared at the ceiling blankly and gently massaged Mingi’s sweaty scalp and hips. Now that his mind was out of haze and longing, the realization that Mingi was in his arms finally dawned on him. The relentlessness he felt while he was away settled down, replaced by affection and calm.

“Mingi?” Yunho’s voice was soft and low, barely audible yet somehow, Mingi still heard him.

“Hmm?”

“We haven’t made this official, have we?”

The finger on his chest paused. He felt Mingi shift only to burrow closer to his side.

“No,” he murmured. “I guess not.”

A hand settled on his chest, where his heart was. Yunho placed his hand over Mingi’s and squeezed it gently.

“Should we?” Yunho asked and tried to peer down on him, but he only saw Mingi’s faded grey hair. “Can we officially date? I…” he hesitates. “I want… I want to be your boyfriend…”

Mingi finally meet his gaze, lips formed into a small pout. “Took you long enough.”

What

Yunho blinked at him dumbly.

Mingi only rolled his eyes and went back nuzzling on his chest. “You’re the only one who wanted to be all romantic and chivalrous, and waited around.” He then sighed and melted in Yunho’s arms. “Though, I guess watching you try to woo me was a teensy bit worth it.”

“What?” Yunho quipped.

“What I mean is,” Mingi started and leaned up on his elbows, eyes cast down to stare at Yunho’s confuse gaze. “Yes, Yunho. Yes, I’d like you to be my boyfriend. Yes, I am totally into officially dating you.  Yes. Did I make myself clear?”

“Yes.” Yunho nodded, breathless. “Yes, totally. I’d like that.”

“Good,” Mingi nodded, smug. He then went back down and plastered himself on Yunho’s side. “Now, that’s clear, help me up. I feel sticky and I want to sleep.”

Yunho was pretty sure it’s still early but he was high up in his mind to truly process even something as mundane as time. He helped Mingi up and they both sprinted towards the bathroom, hissing and grumbling as they padded through the cold floor. Yunho completely forgot to turn on the heater, no wonder it was freezing in his room. They both savoured the steamy hot shower and maybe got a little carried away with the kissing that resulted into Mingi falling on his knees and having Yunho in his mouth, just as he promised earlier.

Needless to say, they both got out with shaky legs and Yunho barely remembered to turn on the heater and sluggishly change the sheets before they collapsed on the bed, boneless and exhausted.

When morning came, Yunho felt the younger man stir next to him. The heater was doing its magic but some of the chill still crept into the room and seep into his bones. He pulled the blankets tighter around him, alongside Mingi who only grunted in return. He felt so comfortable and toasty, almost falling back to sleep until he was disturbed again when Mingi finally decided to get up. He tried not to react when he felt the familiar sensation of Mingi’s lips pressing against his forehead, lingering for a short while before he got off the bed.

Yunho, of course, remained motionless, far too cosy and warm to leave his little nest of blankets. Mingi’s footsteps lightly padded in the room and the door squeaked open as he exited. From a distance, Yunho heard the tell-tale whirring of his coffee machine coming to life and the almost restrained noise of his pans bumping into each other. Oh, he forgot to set aside what he brought last night. Oh well, the weather was too cold to spoil it anyway… probably.

Sooner, the serene silence was filled by rhythmic beats and hype up melodies, Mingi’s playlist beginning its first song of the day. Yunho didn’t know what time it was but he was just so comfortable, he was ready to go back to sleep again. He was actually half-way to falling asleep when he heard the door open… which was strange since he was sure Mingi was making breakfast in his kitchen and it’s never a habit for him to leave in unattended.

“Yunho-yah.”

All the grogginess instantly flew out his mind and Yunho found himself springing up, eyes wide and heart palpitating. That voice sounded familiar… like really, really familiar.

“Oh? Who are you?” the woman’s voice was surprised yet gentle and full of wonder. “Did we get the wrong room?” she asked.

“Oh… uhmm…” Mingi stammered.

Yunho decided to spare him. He got off the bed, leisurely stretching his sore muscles before making his way out of the room. Three pairs of eyes turned to him, two out of curiosity and one out of panic. Mingi’s lips were trembling, frantic as he stammered out possible excuses bubbling in his mind. Yunho’s gaze trailed from his stricken expression to his rumplered hair, falling down on his bruised lips and narrowing at the sight of dark marks filling his neck. Yunho’s attention also fleeted to his exposed legs, swallowing thickly at the red bruises visible on his knees. A sudden cough brought him out of his perverted thoughts, smiling sheepishly as he met questioning yet scolding eyes.

“Yunho? Who is this?” she gestured towards Mingi.

Yunho, despite himself, made his way behind Mingi and wrapped his arms around his lithe waist, pointedly ignoring his stutters as he rest his chin on the younger’s shoulder. Mingi smells of his body wash and floral cotton detergent, filling Yunho with warmth and comfort. So soft and endearing that Yunho can’t help but smile.

He was certain now. All those years of staring at him from a far; those months of being by his side; touching him, hugging him, kissing him... That fluttering feeling in his chest when Mingi smiles, urge to make him laugh and happy- Yunho understands now. He thought he had forgotten, turns out he just supressed it under the pretence of giving up camaraderie. Somehow, it doesn’t feel like a surprising revelation to him. It’s like, it’s always been there, just waiting to be accepted and embraced. Silent, but there.

“Mingi, this is my mom and younger brother,” Yunho murmured against his neck.

“Oh my god,” Mingi gaped under his breath. “Hi, good morning.”

There’s no doubt about it.

Yunho squeezed him gently before levelling his mom’s gaze. “Mom, Gunho. This is Mingi, my boyfriend.”

Yunho knows now. He’s in love.

Notes:

I struggled a lot with this fic. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be as well-received as the first one. This actually reached 39k. I had to re-write this at least 3 times and around 11k words were deleted because I wasn’t satisfied. On top of Yunho’s POV, I also had to insert his backstory so this is a lot longer. Even by then, I wasn’t also sure if the information were relevant or not. I wanted to include his past w Mingi and add more date time for them but it just really got too long, I had to remove the idea. Their friends were also supposed to have a lot of screentime here. Like 50% of the time they were actually here and I’m kind of disappointed I couldn’t go through it. I had to properly pace myself. I contemplated dividing it into 2 parts, but then again, you guys would just switch to the ‘Entire work’ function so I just threw the idea away lol (I know cuz I do it too) . Point is, this did not go the way I wanted to and I was even hesitant to publish this.

Anyways, sorry for the rant. I hope you like.

By the way, what is your maximum word count for a one-shot that is tolerable for you to read? By that I mean, is 25k overwhelming that it might as well be a mini multi-chapter or you can read a one-shot even if it’s like 30-50k or something? Let me know.
