I smoothed down the lines in my dress for the millionth time. I had checked and double-checked my appearance countless times before I left my house. I knew I looked nice, maybe even pretty, but I was still anxious.
I wanted to make a good impression on him. Him, being Sugawara, who had asked me to be his date for this dance the school was having. We had gone on a couple of dates before this, but this felt like something special. Maybe because I got to really dress up for the occasion.
I looked down the road, searching for Suga’s familiar gray hair but I only saw other students as they passed by on their way to the school. We had agreed to meet at the front of the school beforehand and it didn’t seem like a big deal until I decided to come early to wait. My feet were starting to ache slightly in my heels and I shifted my weight a bit, hoping to dispel the feeling.
I bit my lip as another couple passed by, giggling with each other. I knew they weren’t paying me the least bit of attention but, I still felt awkward just standing here.
I looked up as I heard footsteps approaching and gave a big sigh as I saw Suga walking towards me. I smiled as he drew closer, my relief palpable and I watched as he smiled in return, his eyes lighting up.
“Hey! I hope you weren’t waiting long,” he called out.
I shook my head, letting my gaze travel his form, taking in his appearance. He looked even more handsome decked out in a light gray tux that complemented his hair.
I blushed as he came to a stop in front of me, his own gaze lingering on my appearance.
“You look…stunning.”
I lowered my eyes, trying not to look too pleased with the compliment.
“You look rather dashing yourself.”
He grinned and I noticed that he had one arm hidden behind his back. I looked up at him with a raised eyebrow.
“I got you something.” He slowly pulled his arm in front of him, showing me a single red rose in his hand.
“Oh,” I breathed out, slowly reaching for it. I stopped partway from taking it, glancing back up into his face to be certain.
He gave me such a warm look, that I felt my heart melt and I closed my fingers around the stem. I brought it closer to my face to inhale the scent, giving Suga a bashful look from under my lashes.
“You didn’t have to do this. Thank you.”
“I most certainly did, if only to see you with that look on your face.”
I blinked at him in surprise then looked away quickly, focusing back on the rose. Suga always knew exactly what to say to fluster me to the point of being speechless. Probably because he was absolutely sincere with what he said.
The clearing of his throat had me looking back at him, “So, I know you probably want to go in but would you walk with me a bit first?”
I tilted my head at him, “Sure, but can I ask why?”
His grin was mischievous, “I don’t want to share you just yet, to be honest.”
“Suga!” I spluttered out, pleased and shocked all at once.
He laughed, “It’s true. Once we walk in there, you’re going to be the center of attention.” He gave me another warm look, “And I want you to myself for a little while longer.”
I twirled the rose in my fingers, staring at its petals, trying to hide the blush that was rising up my cheeks. “Ok,” I answered softly, “But, uh, where are we going?”
He cupped my elbow, gently ushering me alongside him, “Come on, I’ll show you.”
It didn’t take long and I recognized the area outside one of the gyms. He guided me towards a bench and we sat down gingerly, trying not to ruin our nice clothes. I placed the rose beside me and let out a quiet sigh as I let my feet rest for a few moments. I hadn’t worn extremely high heels, but after standing in place for a bit, they did ache a little.
“What’s wrong?”
“Huh?”
“You sighed. You ok?”
“Oh! You heard that?” I looked down at my feet, “It’s nothing. Just my feet, that’s all.”
I glanced back up at him with a small smile only to find that he was looking at me with concern.
“What do you mean? Are you hurting? Can I help?” His words tumbled out quickly and he turned towards me, inching closer on the bench.
I threw my hands up, waving them around in front of me, “No! No! My feet ache a little, that’s all! Promise! I’m ok.” I gave him what I hoped was my most reassuring smile.
“Alright, if you’re sure.” His eyebrows were still furrowed in concern.
I touched his arm, gently, “Thank you, but I promise it’s ok. Heels just make your feet ache if you stand in them for too long. Or at least, that’s what they do to me.” I shrugged.
“So you were waiting for me for a while?”
I chuckled a little, he was really concerned, “I promise, Suga, that I was not waiting for you for that long. I just haven’t worn heels in a while, so my feet aren’t used to standing in them for any length of time.”
When his eyebrows smoothed out a bit, I gave him a grin, “It’s the price to look good.”
He finally returned my smile, “Well, I can honestly say that it was worth it. But, you know, you look beautiful even without dressing up.”
I felt the sting of a blush on my cheeks and I looked away, “Thank you.”
“Hey,” he placed his hand on my chin and turned my face back towards him.
I felt my eyebrows creep up a bit.
“What-”
“Why do you look away when I tell you how gorgeous you are?”
Suga was looking at me with such affection that I felt my mouth go dry. It took a moment for the question to register in my brain and I swallowed. His eyes traveled down from my own to my lips and back again, making my heart thump wildly in my chest. I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out.
“Do you not believe me?”
I went to shake my head no, but his hand kept my head still. I licked my suddenly dry lips, his eyes tracking the movement, “No, I-I believe it when you tell me.”
“Then why look away?”
His fingers were warm on my face and it was getting harder to focus on what he was asking me when we both kept leaning closer to each other.
“It’s embarrassing, I guess,” I responded softly.
I felt his other hand grasp mine in his, lacing our fingers together, “Embarrassing? Why? Because it’s true?”
He was much closer now, his breath puffing out over my face with each question. I glanced down at his lips and slowly looked back up into his eyes. There was such warmth and affection it made my heart ache at the tenderness of it.
He groaned lightly, “I’m trying not to kiss you senseless right now.”
I sucked in my breath sharply, my eyes widening at his directness, even as a warmth spread through me.
He gave a low chuckle at my reaction, “ I guess I shouldn’t say things like that, huh?”
He pulled our joined hands up towards his face, turning mine over to place a light kiss in the center of my palm. It sent tingles down my whole arm and I risked a glance into his eyes only to find that he was watching me intently.
“Or maybe…” I said slowly, my voice husky, “You should act on it, instead.”
His expression went from shocked to happy to something else in the blink of an eye. I desperately hoped that something else was the exact same thing I was feeling in this moment because I really wanted him to kiss me.
He leaned forward slowly and it felt like the whole world was holding its breath right along with me as I did the same.
I closed my eyes, his breath ghosting along my lips as we moved ever closer until finally, I felt the touch of his lips. I felt the hand that had been holding my face in place move to the back of my neck, pulling me closer as our kiss intensified. I placed a hand on his chest to brace myself as I leaned closer, opening my mouth for him. Our tongues collided and I gripped the front of his shirt as I let the kiss sweep me away. I nipped his lower lip, eliciting a pleased noise from him as he pressed his lips back to mine again. I wasn’t aware of how long we had been kissing when he pulled away slowly, giving me small fleeting kisses as we both returned to reality.
When I finally opened my eyes again, it was to find Suga watching me, a small smile on his face. I felt the blush even as I watched his smile become a grin at my reaction. I groaned and buried my face in his chest.
“You just like to embarrass me, don’t you?” I mumbled against him.
I felt as he chuckled and said, “I won’t deny that I love the way you look when you’re embarrassed, because you look adorable, but I just like looking at you.”
My heart melted again, “Why?”
“Why do I like looking at you?”
I nodded, still buried in his chest.
He gently pulled me away from him so that we were face to face, “Because I love watching all the expressions you make. How you have a dimple on your cheek when you smile, or how your eyes crinkle when you laugh. Or even your nose scrunching up when you get upset. It’s amazing to me that someone like you likes me back.”
I stared at him, shocked. It was the sweetest thing anyone had ever said to me.
He laughed, “I love that face too.” He got a mischievous glint in his eyes, “Makes me want to kiss you again.”
“Suga!”
He laughed again, squeezing me to him. “I’ll wait for now. I guess we had better go inside or I’ll be tempted to keep you out here to myself for the whole night.”
Somehow, that didn’t sound like a bad idea to me.
