Two Kindred Weirdos

Summary:

"Looking at the room next to ours, my eyes meet another girl’s. Her skin’s also tanned, has brown hair, and seems to be around my age. In terms of differences, we wore different outfits, our hairstyle was different, so was our ethnicity, and in general our art styles differed. We stare at each other for what seems like forever, and wave timidly, smiling but unsure whether to interact properly or not. Unfortunately, I hear my name being called, so I take my leave. Maybe we’ll get to know each other soon."

Welcome to our very first broadcast! In today's story that serves an introduction to the wonderful world of animation and Toontown, we follow the story of sister shows, Amphibia and The Owl House, how they began, their time filming and on the air, as well as the issues on and off set they faced, and how the stars of the show have created a bond that will last forever.

Prologue

Jamie: Ok, are you ready?

Anne: *Pauses,* Do you mean her or…?

Luz: No, I think they meant you. I mean, unless I go first, but-

Jamie: Well, you’re both talking right now, so?

Anne and Luz: Oh, sorry!

Jamie: Hehe, it’s fine. Just take your time and say when-

Anne and Luz: We’re ready!

Jamie: …well, alright then.

Ok, so pardon the bit of unprofessionalism going on right now, but that’s what you get when you start up a new show. You don’t know what’s gonna happen, I don’t know what’s gonna happen, it’s fun living in uncertainty when it’s not existentially dreadful. If you regularly tune into this station and expect our resident disc jockey to play the Top 40 songs of the week, you can catch them after our new program.

So what we have planned for our new show are stories, more specifically stories that focus on toons. Stories where toons tell their stories, where they’re front and center. Some stories will look into the world of the entertainment industry, others will look into the life of retirement. There will be tears of joy, and sadness, moments where you stop and think, and moments where you simply say, “Oh that’s nice”.

From public radio station KTUN-FM 109.0, it’s Your Radio Toontown. I’m your host and creator of our show, Jamie Thornton. If you’re reading the transcript for this episode, thank our co-creator and producer, Chiaki Forester Kaneda. Tonight’s program is a story about ‘Two Kindred Souls’, or weirdos as they like it.

This story will, at least I hope, give you, the listener, an introduction to our little big city and our residents. In this story, we’ll be talking you through the lives of not one, but two stars that have made some waves recently. It starts off with how they’re first sketched, their time filming their respective shows, and the challenges they faced.

It's a tale of love and betrayal, fame and power, government and corporate politics, and an ever-changing world. Plus there are plenty of fluffy moments to water down any angst to come. Originally we were thinking of just doing one of them, but seeing how much their journeys intertwine with one another, to interview just one would be a disservice to both. It's the story of Amphibia and The Owl House , told by our two special guests, Anne Boonchuy and Luz Noceda, and it only gets crazier from here, stay with us.

Luz: Wait, you were only gonna have one of us on air?

Jamie: Oh, well, I wasn’t sure who’d be available.

Anne: Hold on, so who was your first choice?

Jamie: Uh…

Luz: *Smug,* I’d choose your next words carefully.

Anne: Ha! Yeah, she’s not just speaking for me.

Jamie: … I sense I’ve made a mistake.

Notes:

Coming up, Act One: New Beginnings. We see the development of both series, and the state of Disney Television Animation before then, and how it all came together. That's all in a minute, when our program continues.
