Chapter Text

For somebody who works at MI6, Eve can be incredibly dumb.

In her defense, last time she just lost her phone, this time she has somehow also managed to steal someone elses.

2 hours earlier

Visiting her lawyer always leaves Eve with a double feeling. On the one hand she’s glad that everything going on with Niko is almost done, but on the other hand she’s sad that it’s had to happen this way.

Niko and she were happy once, but somewhere in between then and now something changed. They got in a rut, they started arguing more and started avoiding each other to avoid conflict. When they both agreed to get a divorce after one final big argument it came to no one’s surprise.

But what was supposed to be a clean simple divorce turned into a messy procedure that is still dragging on. Luckily she has the help of her amazing lawyer Carolyn Martens and it seems that the end is finally in sight.

Eve’s phone starts to ring just as she sits down on the toilet in the Martens head offices.

“Hey Bill.”

“Where are you?”

“On the loo.”

“Damn Eve, you don’t have to pick up the phone you know?”

“Oh shut up, you don’t mind.” Eve smirks to herself.

“You damn right I don’t. How did the meeting go?”

“Same as usual, he’s still doing everything to make this as hard as possible.”

“Prick.”

“Yeah well, we can’t all find perfect partners.”

“Promise me you’ll let me approve the next person you date.”

“Guess I’ll die an old maiden then.”

“Ha ha. You’re still good for dinner on friday? Keiko’s asking.”

“I would kill a child for your wife’s dinners, of course I’ll be there.”

“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that Eve, I’ll see you then.”

She puts her phone aside and looks in the mirror as she washes her hands.

This divorce hasn’t been kind on my night’s rest.

Eve notices the dark circles under her eyes. Promising herself to skip the wine and get an early night, she turns off the faucet. A tall blonde woman is hogging the hand dryer so Eve shakes the water off her hands, puts her phone in her bag and walks out the bathroom.

After taking the tube home, she’s walking up to her front door as she hears a dreaded voice speak out.

“Hello Eve! How are you? How’s Niko? Haven’t seen him in a while.”

“Oh hey Gemma.”

Eve tries her best not to grit her teeth.

“No, no, the divorce is still happening. I’m afraid you won’t see Niko here again.”

Although she has no specific reason for it, her neighbour Gemma’s presence always puts her on edge. The dumb remarks and sometimes blund racism don’t help.

“Don’t you want to come over for dinner tonight? It’s no good always being by yourself. I’ll make something Japanese especially for you, you’ll love it!”

Eve might really kill her.

“That’s very kind of you Gemma, but my friend is actually coming over tonight -”

“Oh she can come too!’

“- and she just went through a breakup herself so I think it would be a bit much for her” Eve scrambles for an excuse.

“Ah that’s too bad, another time then!”

“Yeah sure, I look forward to it” Eve flashes a forced smile and quickly turns the key in her lock.

Although the breakup was a blatant lie, the conversation did remind Eve that she had in fact agreed to a night out with Elena. Remembering her promise to get a sober early night's rest Eve decides she better text her to reschedule.

She picks up her bag and finds her phone, her thumbs automatically entering her lock code.

Try Again

She must be really tired, how hard can it be to enter the stupid code-

Try Again

“God dammit..” she mutters to herself. This time she enters the numbers slowly one by one.
As the dreaded message stares back at her

iPhone is disabled - try again in 1 minute

Eve realizes that the intricate gold plated phone case definitely isn’t hers.

“Fuck.”
