Work Text:
I glanced down at my phone again, checking the time. Only one minute had passed since I had checked before and still no text from Kageyama.
I fought the urge to slam it down in frustration. It wasn’t the phone’s fault that my boyfriend was late for our date. Again. For the second time in a row.
I gently placed the phone on the couch cushion beside me and pulled my knees up to my chest. I inhaled a deep breath, trying to calm myself. He always had a good reason. Not to mention Karasuno was going to nationals, which meant that their practices were going to be much longer and more intense.
I stared at my toes that I had painted for our date, silently wondering if maybe I wasn’t being fair to him. He had been up front with me about his time being divided and that volleyball was going to come first right now.
Point of fact, I had asked him out, not the other way around. Although, he did admit that he liked me and had thought about asking me out but decided against it because of his commitment to volleyball.
I sighed. I had agreed to be patient, that I understood and that I was ok with volleyball being his priority as long as we got to be together as much as we could. We had only dated for a month and in that month we’ve only gone out on three dates. He had been late for the last two.
I glanced back at my phone, biting my lip. He could at least text saying that he couldn’t come, right? That wasn’t being unreasonable. Was it? Unless, something had come up or his phone died, or even-
I shook my head, stopping my train of thought. I didn’t need to go down that line of thinking. He would text when he could. Me sitting here, staring and worrying wasn’t going to magically make him appear.
I swiped my phone off the couch, jumping up quickly. May as well go and change out of my cute outfit into something comfy. It was looking more and more like a canceled date. I felt a stab of disappointment at the thought. I really liked Kageyama. He was sullen, arrogant, and definitely a perfectionist when it came to volleyball, but he was also insightful, caring in his own way and very sweet.
He was trying to chase his dreams of playing volleyball professionally and here I was sulking because I wasn’t getting the attention from him that I wanted. If I really liked him, I would be supporting him in his dreams, right? Not acting childish because of one canceled date. Although, he definitely could have sent a text. That was not asking for too much. Maybe I could talk to him about that the next time I saw him.
My mind made up and feeling better about things, I was almost to my bedroom door when I heard the doorbell ring. The sound stopped me in my tracks. My first thought was that Kageyama had come over anyway, making my heart flutter wildly in my chest. I immediately rushed to the door and swung it open only to have something soft and velvety thrust into my face. The smell of flowers was overwhelming as I quickly stepped back to see a bouquet of pink roses in front of me.
“Here. For you.” Kageyama’s voice reached me through the haze of surprise and I slowly reached out to take them from him.
“Wha-whe-huh?” I stumbled over my words, my gaze shifting from the roses to Kageyama’s scowl back to the roses.
It took me a moment to realize that Kageyama was blushing fiercely, doing his best to not look at me. I swallowed back a nervous chuckle, not wanting to make him even more uncomfortable.
“You got these for me? Is that why you’re umm…late?” I asked him, hesitantly, even as my heart was melting at the sweetness of it all.
If anything, his blush only deepened, making his scowl all the more adorable, but he gave a quick nod.
I felt my own face heat up, “Do you want to come in?” I stepped aside, giving him room to maneuver around me.
He glanced at me, his gaze searching my face before his scowl softened a little and he made his way through the door.
I took a moment to smell the roses before looking at Kageyama who was in turn watching me. I felt my blush return but I gave him a small smile, “Thank you for the roses. They’re lovely.”
He looked away quickly before he scratched the back of his head, “You’re welcome.”
“Here, why don’t you go sit down and I’ll find a vase or something to put these in,” I gestured towards the open doorway to the sofa behind him. After making sure he was ok, I quickly went into the kitchen and found something to hold the bouquet before I went and sat down on the couch with him.
We stared at each other awkwardly in silence for a few minutes.
“So…you bought flowers for me?” I asked him, trying to break the tension that seemed to fill the air. Something was off but I wasn’t sure what.
“Yes.”
I waited to see if he would be anymore forthcoming but when he remained silent, I realized I was going to have to keep the conversation going.
“May I ask why? Not that I don’t love them! They’re gorgeous, but umm…it was definitely a surprise…” I let my voice trail off. Kageyama was blushing again and I really wasn’t sure why.
“My teammates said that since I was late I needed to apologize to you,” he admitted, not looking at me and instead staring at his shoes.
That explained his embarrassment, somewhat. Kageyama was very awkward when it came to social etiquette, but still, there seemed to be something else on his mind.
“Oh. Uhh…ok. Can I also ask why I didn’t get a text?”
He looked over at me, his blush turning a shade darker, “My phone died.”
“Ah…Well, thank you for the flowers. I really do love them,” I gave him a shy smile, feeling my heart flutter. He gave me a smile in return then immediately looked away again. I could feel the awkwardness return so I cleared my throat and asked, “Well, since you’re here, do you wanna watch a movie or something? I know it’s late so you probably can’t stay long, but I mean, if you can stay for a little while, I’d like that.” I wanted to ask if something else was wrong, but I really wasn’t sure how.
He seemed to think about my request very seriously before finally saying, “I’d like to stay for a bit.”
I held back a chuckle at how serious he was being, “Ok, so uh…any requests for a movie?”
He shook his head so I decided to put on my favorite. After getting everything settled, I sat back down on the couch much closer to Kageyama than I had been previously. I cautiously watched him out of the corner of my eye to see if he was uncomfortable but when he made no move, I relaxed.
“Have you seen this before?”
“No.”
“Great! It’s my favorite!”
I immediately turned my attention back to the screen, but I was still trying to sneakily watch him out of the corner of my eye. He seemed to be thinking very hard about something, then he glanced over at me. I jerked my attention to the television, hoping that he didn’t notice me watching him. After a moment, I felt something brush against the back of my head and settle on my shoulder. I gave a slight jerky movement forward in surprise before I saw that it was Kageyama’s hand.
I relaxed back but felt my cheeks burn as it clicked that he was trying to snuggle with me on the couch while we watched the movie. Is this something else that his teammates told him about? Was that why he was uncomfortable? I turned quickly to look at him and saw that he was sporting a matching blush on his own cheeks.
I swallowed, nervously, about to ask him before deciding against it and instead I leaned closer to him, gently pressing up against his side. I felt him stiffen beside me, then he also relaxed and pulled me closer until there was no gap between us.
“Is this ok?” he asked me.
I looked up at him, knowing that I was still blushing and nodded, then quickly said, “Are you ok with this?” I really didn’t want him to be uncomfortable either.
He gave me a confused look, probably because he was the one who initiated the contact. Then he said, “Yes, you’re soft and warm and I don’t want you to move.”
That definitely had my cheeks burning hotter, so I averted my gaze back to the movie, not really seeing it at all. My heart was thumping so loudly in my chest I hoped that Kageyama couldn’t hear it.
After a few minutes, I was finally able to calm my racing heart and enjoy our close contact. I was starting to focus back on the movie when I felt him move beside me. I turned my face up towards him to ask if he was ok when I realized that his face was extremely close and before I knew it I felt his lips press against my own. It lasted for only a second but it felt like time had completely slowed down.
Kageyama’s eyes flew open at the contact and he pulled back quickly, blushing. I just stared up at him, bewildered.
His mouth opened and closed a few times before he said, “I, uh, I was trying to-” his blush deepened, “Ki-kiss you on the cheek. They told me that girls like that.” He started pulling his arm from around me when I grabbed his hand and held it in place. He stared down at me, frozen.
“Your…your teammates told you?”
He nodded quickly.
“I-I liked it,” I told him softly, the stinging in my face increasing. I watched his eyes widen in surprise, then a small smile formed.
He relaxed back onto the couch, his arm that was around me pulling me snug against him again before he said simply, “I did too.”
