Work Text:

Klaus was surprised he even managed to win a gold medal. He knew that he was good, but his mind had been on something, or someone else the entire way down the slope. It had only been days ago where he walked in on his now ex-girlfriend, Elsa, with the entire East German bobsled team. He could still hear their calls to go faster and pull left and right - but in her.

Elsa tore his heart in two and then stomped on it and spit on it a couple times. Klaus could have never imagined his love, his one, cheating on him.

Klaus had shrugged his way through the award ceremony, listened to his country's anthem as the gold medal was placed around his neck, and answered all the interview questions. As soon as that was over, he returned to his room, tears stinging his eyes as he closed the door. He'd won an amazing award. He should have been proud of himself. But all he felt was pity. His girlfriend cheated on him.

After an entire day of isolating in his room, his stomach was grumbling so much that he just had to go and get food. He sat at a table and watched all of the people around him. He felt so lonely. The only person he'd brought was Elsa, but now she was with the bobsled team.

"Can I sit here?" a voice asked from behind him. Klaus turned around and looked up at them.

"You can," he mumbled, turning back to his food, which he was only pushing around with his spoon.

The person sat down across from him. "Hey, you won the skiing gold, didn't you?" they asked, setting their food on the table.

Klaus nodded a bit. "Yes, that was me," he said, not looking this new person in the eyes.

They nodded too. "You were amazing," they said, with a hint of a smile in their voice.

Wait. Did Klaus recognize that voice? He looked up at the person again and instantly recognized them as the person who placed second in the skiing competition. "I think you were amazing too," he mumbled, feeling a little embarrassed at talking to someone who he'd competed so closely with.

"Oh, thanks," the new person said before taking a bite of their food.

The two kept glancing at each other but not saying anything as they ate in silence. Klaus couldn't help but admire them. They had this newer energy about them. Kind of like what he felt when he first met Elsa.

He sighed. It was too early to move on from Elsa. Of course, she had already moved on from him with at least 5 men. And this person was really attractive.

"So...uh...what was your name?" Klaus asked, looking at them with a small smile.

"Oh, I'm Y/n," Y/n said, smiling back at Klaus. They noticed his change in mood. "So, what have you been up to since your big win?" they asked.

Klaus shrugged. "I've just been resting in my room, I guess," he said, going back to mumbling. It was like a half-truth.

Y/n nodded. "I wish I was you. I've been running around watching my teammates in their events," they said, then sighed. "I love watching figure skating."

"I like anything besides the sledding," Klaus said, rolling his eyes. Stupid bobsled team.

Y/n smiled. "My ex is on one of the sledding teams," they said.

Klaus nodded. "Mine slept with the sledding team," he said, frowning.

Y/n frowned. "Oh. Well, how about we go watch the snowboarding, and then we go get a glass of wine and talk more?" Y/n asked, hoping the handsome skier would take them up on the offer.

Klaus smiled a bit. "Yeah, that sounds good to me," he said.

He really hoped this would go somewhere.
