Chapter Text
The music was blaring, but the drink in your hand was making it seem more like a dull thud. It was a party, obviously, a party thrown by the kids of Class A to be exact. You were surprised that these kinds of things were allowed by the school, but you figured it was to let the kids from the classes feel like real teenagers in spite of the things you all went through as first years. Though could you really exclude yourselves from that demographic just yet? It was the night before the first day of Second-Year classes, everyone had just moved back into the dorms after summer vacation, and just about no one wanted to show up sober for the first day. You weren’t a heavy drinker, in fact the drink in your hand was only your second, but some people were going all out. You winced at a crash coming from the living room area of the Class A common room, yourself being situated in the kitchen. You noticed someone else hanging around, looking about as calm as one could be in this environment. You recognized him from last year's sports festival and a few inter-class training sessions. He was standing by the counters across the kitchen space, not really near anyone but close enough to join conversations if he so chose. You decided, fuck it, worse case scenario you said something embarrassing and you downed a few more drinks as to not remember in the morning.
“Hey,” you started, walking over and leaning against the counter next to him.
“Sup.” A simple response, you over-analyzed.
As if the universe decided to give you a free talking point, a song you happened to love came on. It was a rock song, definitely the right mood for a rager. You swayed along to the loud beats and sang the words quietly.
“You know this band?” He raised an eyebrow. It was a pretty underground band, they mostly did rock and what could be classified as “emo” music.
“Why? Don’t you?” You responded cheekily. “Kidding, they’re one of my favorites, you?”
“Same, I didn't really think many other people knew about them.”
“Most don’t, matter of fact who’s playing this?” You glanced behind you and into the living room, seeing your red-headed friend next to the speakers holding his phone.
“Yeah Kirishima!” You called your approval for his song choice. He gave you his signature grin before another classmate of yours, an ash blonde with a short temper, grabbed him by his shoulders and smashed his lips onto his.
“Damn, go Kirishima.” You repeated, quieter and with more humor this time.
A chuckle brought your attention back to the guy next to you and you smiled as you held your hand out to him.
“Y/n L/n.” You said.
He took your hand, grinning, he replied. “Hitoshi Shinso.” You knew his name, and you were pretty sure he knew yours, but to hell with it.
“So you’re in 1- I mean 2-B now? You must’ve gotten moved up, as far as I know it was just those two classes invited because of ‘shared trauma from the hero course’.” You put air quotes over your words after what a certain electric blonde you knew had said during his proposal for this party.
“2-A actually. At the end of last year the teachers reviewed the footage and decided to move me up.” Saying he beamed with pride would be an overstatement, but for a mostly mellow guy it was pretty close.
You grinned, glad for him. “Well then, I look forward to seeing you in class.” You lifted your drink in a toast manner, he did the same with the spiked energy drink and you both tipped them back.
“One thing though, if you’re in our class why didn’t I see you when we were unpacking and catching up?” You referred to a few hours before the party currently happening around the two of you.
“I made Denki carry most of my stuff up ‘cause he’s my roommate, besides him I don’t really know people from class that well so I thought it’d be awkward.” He rubbed the back of his neck.
He was talking about another new aspect of U.A.'s dorm system, roommates. It was made to be more of a way to discourage sneaking out (not that anyone had been stupid enough to try that yet) and make it harder for people to be kidnapped from their dorms (once again, hasn’t happened yet, but enough parents expressed concern for U.A. to implement it). Your roommate was the one and only Mina Ashido, who you were pretty sure was on the dance floor at the moment.
You hummed in response. “Well you’ll have to hang out with all of us at some point, we’d all made speculations as to why none of us saw Mineta. I had bet that he wasn’t stupid enough to show his ugly face after what he pulled at the graduation party.” You grit your teeth but, realizing that not many people from your class, let alone the other ones, had heard what happened, you changed the subject. “But now I’ll have to move my money onto him being replaced before everyone else sees you.”
He smiled with curiosity still festering at the mention of last year's graduation party and Mineta, but he sensed your discomfort and moved on.
“You’d use prior knowledge at the expense of others to get more money?” He asked sarcastically, taking a sip of his drink to hide his smirk.
“Duh, I may be a Hero-in-training, but that doesn’t make me a saint.” You teased, sipping your own drink.
“I wouldn’t accuse you of being one.” He replied, mischief apparent in his eyes,
“What’s that look for?”
He shrugged. “Depends.”
You giggled, but decided you should probably make a distinction before the conversation floated elsewhere and he got the wrong idea, though he didn’t seem like the type.
“I’m not really into hookups, so if that’s all this is going to amount to I may as well let you down now.” You leaned against the counter and avoided eye contact.
“Me neither, but, out of curiosity, why approach me in this specific setting? Isn’t this usually where people decide to do that kind of thing?” He quirked an eyebrow.
“You seem interesting, it may have been the alcohol.” You joked.
He feigned a pained expression. “And here I thought you were really into me.”
“You sound so disappointed at the idea that I may not be.” You teased, swirling the drink in your cup.
“Maybe I am.”
“You’ve known me for maybe 5 minutes now, and it sounds like you’re flirting with me.”
“Like I said, maybe I am.”
You were surprised at his bluntness, he was so straightforward it was shocking, in a good way.
“Y/nnnnn~,” a familiar voice ruined the moment, you looked over to see one of your closest friends since being at U.A.
“What’s up Mina?” You questioned as she made her way over to you on slightly shaky legs.
“Kiri keeps telling me to ask you to bring me to our room.” She whined, “ I told him I’m fine *hic* but Bakugou’s teasing me about being a lightweight.” She sobbed and hiccuped.
You smiled fondly at the girl's antics, rolled your eyes with no real malice and replied, “Alright well I’ll take you up then, right now you couldn’t make it up those stairs without breaking something.” She whined in protest but didn’t outright disagree. “Just give me a second.”
You opened one of the kitchen drawers to find sticky notes, note pads, pens, pencils, and markers. You grabbed a sticky note and a writing utensil before scribbling down your message, handing it to Shinso, grabbing Mina’s arm to support her, waving over your shoulder at him, and helping her towards the dorm stairs.
Shinso’s P.O.V.
Once you’d left from sight Shinso glanced down at the paper you’d given him.
In case you want to talk more :)
XXX-XXX-XXXX
He smiled to himself before taking out his phone and making a contact for you, he figured he’d probably have to figure out a non-creepy way to ask for a contact picture, but that could wait. In the notes he added the name of the song by the band you both knew and a vague description of what you looked like in case Denki somehow convinced him to play a drinking game again.
“Hey! ‘Toshi!” Speak of the devil and they shall appear.
“Hey Denki,” He glanced over at the blond that he’d gotten particularly close with over summer break.
“Met Y/n, have you?” He wiggled his eyebrows and pointed his drink in the direction you’d just disappeared to.
Shinso rolled his eyes and walked towards his friend. “C’mon let’s go socialize, or whatever people do at these things.”
“GASP, you’re volunteering to socialize! Unheard of! Is avoiding the topic really that important to you?”
Shinso rolled his eyes yet again, and figured this would be a very long night.
Meanwhile, back with Y/n and Mina:
“Okay, now just lean against me for support- no Mina I didn’t mean fall on top of me. C’mon get up, why did you still have a drink? Wasn’t this entire situation because you can't hold your liquor? Apparently you took that too literally as you just spilled your drink all over yourself. Fantastic. No, I won’t carry you upstairs so don’t ask.”
As you can probably tell, you were having a blast trying to get Mina up to your room. Eventually, after five-minutes-too-long of torture trying to get Mina to work with you so you could both get upstairs, she pointed out the elevator. You screamed internally and decided to blame your lack of common sense on not being here in months and previously consumed alcohol.
Once in the elevator, you pressed the 2nd floor button and waited to leave the ground floor. There were eleven dorms in total, with the ground floor being the common room/kitchen, the 1st floor having five dorms, and the 2nd having six. With twenty-one classmates someone was going to have to live alone, and to everyone’s surprise Tsu volunteered, on the condition that she could have extra heaters so she “didn’t have to worry about going into hibernation in the winter.” Good for her, using the opportunity to her advantage.
You were brought out of your spaced out state by Mina singing quietly to the music in the elevator, that U.A. thought was necessary for some reason.
“Oh, I wanna dance with somebody~!” She quickly went from quiet singing and tapping her foot to the beat, to grabbing your hand and spinning you while basically putting on a musical performance.
“I wanna feel the heat with somebody~!”
You were both laughing wildly when the elevator doors opened, you weren’t surprised that even though she could barely walk without losing her balance, she could most certainly dance.
“I wanna know what love is~”
“Wrong song, Mina.” You laughed as you kicked open the door to your shared room.
“I want you to show me~!” She completely ignored you as her voice cracked on the last note. She flopped onto her bed and started dramatically snoring.
“Uh, absolutely not.” You switched on the lights, causing her to whine and cover her already closed eyes. “You are changing out of that dress, you spilled your drink all over it and trust me you’ll regret it in the morning if you don’t.”
Instead of listening to you- or even acknowledging you, she chose to change the topic.
“Who’s that guy you were talking to?” She asked as you began shuffling around, double checking you’d unpacked everything where you wanted it. “I mean I know who he is, but who is he to you?” She teased.
“Nice try at a subject change, but not only did I just meet him tonight, so there’s nothing interesting to tell, but I’m also not going to fall for your attempts at getting out of changing.”
She sighed out a ‘Fine.’ and grabbed a change of clothes for her party outfit of a knee length strapless neon-pink dress with black zebra print on it, and a sparkly belt, along with her black converse. You
grabbed some pajamas and went into the bathroom to change, wash your face, and brush your teeth. Once you were done, Mina danced past you to do the same, already re-full of energy and humming to a song she’d probably just made up.
You climbed under your covers, trusting Mina to get the lights, and drifted off, a mix of nervousness and excitement for what tomorrow would hold fighting against the sleep that desperately wanted to take over your body. Eventually the sleep succeeded as Mina turned off the lights and got into her own bed. Even half asleep, you were looking forward to tomorrow, and just maybe a part of that was seeing Shinso again.
