Tap, tap, tap, tap. That was the sound Yua-chan heard when people walked the halls, chatting and laughing and smiling. Bare feet stepping on carpets, on planks. Yua-chan would have made that sound, if only her feet weren’t padded with pink, squishy pads. Instead, the sound she made was one she couldn’t imitate.
Yua-chan usually heard the people walking and talking in the bright daylight, when the birds sang and flew around so noisily. But when it was dark, when the white shiny gems in the sky glowed their brightest, overshadowed by the luminescent moon, that was when Yua-chan moved. She would explore, and dance, and push books off shelves sometimes. After that, she’d go lie down with her owners.
Which is what she was doing now.
She had shifted herself into a comfortable spot, curled up beneath someone’s chin. Yua-chan knew who it was; the other human called her Touko. The people that arrived now and then called her Fukawa, but maybe it was a nickname. To Yua-chan, Touko was Touko. Her tail had slowed to a stop; her eyes were shut. But she could feel that soon, sleepy time was over.
At least for her owners.
Touko let out a long exhale, unknowingly breathing into Yua-chan. She didn’t mind the warm air in her fur, but maybe Touko would. Yua-chan could feel her human stirring, pressing her face deeper into her fur, until she raised her face. She turned her head in unison.
“Yua-chan..?” Muted pink eyes connected with bold blue and soft yellow. Touko looked at Yua-chan. Was she supposed to say something? Yua-chan didn’t know, so instead she tilted her head and sat up. She stared back at her human, who copied her actions. Then her hand came down on her head, scratching the nape of Yua-chan’s neck, eliciting contented purrs from her. “Morning, Yua-chan,”
Touko turned her head again, propping herself up against the backboard of the bed. The bedside clock read 7:30am. Yua-chan may have been a cat, but she still knew what the time meant. At this time, it would be a bit brighter outside. The walk-and-talk time for her humans was so close! That meant that Yua-chan would get fed soon! Subconsciously, she pawed at her arm, pupils dilating and eyes sparkling in anticipation.
“Mmm.. What’s the time..?” Both heads turned in the direction of the voice, shoulders relaxing as they saw who it was. Face down on the mattress, a mess beneath the blankets, was Yua-chan’s other human, Makoto. His ruffled hair made it clear.
Yua-chan looked up at Touko, feeling the oncoming exchange. Touko didn’t notice. Instead, she smiled at him, replying, “Time to wake up, Ma-kun.” She reached out her arm and scratched his head just like she did with Yua-chan, but rather than purring, he blushed and forced himself to sit up.
“Hey, Yua-chan. How are you doing?”
She wanted to say, ‘Just fine,’ but it came out as a high-pitched meow. Despite that, his smile only grew, like he understood. Yua-chan knew that he couldn’t understand what she said. However, he did understand how she said it.
“That’s good, isn’t it? Come on, let’s get you something to eat.” With that he flung his feet over the side of the bed, stretching as he stood upright. But before he made his way to the kitchen, he walked round to Touko. For a few seconds, they did nothing but stare at each other with soft, gentle eyes. Then, Makoto leaned down to give her a peck on the lips. Yua-chan was too small to see what Touko did, but she probably smiled.
She could hear them say, ‘Good morning,’ once more before they set off to start their days.
