Chapter Text
"Wait, remind me why we offered to host Thanksgiving?" Lena said, wiping sweat and hair from her brow.
"Do you mean Grateful to Our First Nations Day?"
"Huh?" Lena didn't pause her manic onion chopping.
"Never mind. Well, first of all, we offered because we have twice as much space as Sam and Alex. And second, if you've changed your mind we can cancel, it's really not a big deal."
"Grateful to First Nations Day is today, Kara. We can't cancel when people are supposed to show up here in less than 6 hours."
"There's where you're wrong, baby. We can cancel right now and come up with a new plan. Alex and Sam probably wouldn't mind hosting." Kara grinned and got a twinkle in her eye. "Or...I bet Bo Ling's Chop Suey Palace is open today."
Lena couldn't help but crack a smile at Kara's reference to A Christmas Story, which was one of the movies she'd put on Kara's must-see holiday movie list when they first met all those years ago. She couldn't help but giggle and slow her chopping as she remembered how clueless Kara seemed back then. Of course at that time Lena had no idea why she was so unfamiliar with holiday traditions, that it was literally her first Christmas on earth.
"Unfair, reminding me of what an adorable clueless nerd you used to be to distract me from my panic."
"I'm still an adorable clueless nerd, and we don't have to do this. I promise we can figure out something else. Maybe it wasn't a good idea given your...hormones." Kara said, moving in and sliding her arms around Lena from behind.
"No!" Lena said, sounding anxious. "No. I'm glad we're doing this, I just...I'm just feeling on edge. I want everything to be perfect."
"Everything is already perfect." Kara said, grabbing Lena's hand and turning her around. She carefully removed a large knife from Lena's hand and wrapped her arms around Lena's lower back to pull her close until her slightly swollen belly was pressed tightly against her own tight muscular abdominals.
"I see domestic bliss hasn't hurt your skills at disarming a villian..." Lena chuckled as she relaxed into the embrace.
"They don't call me Supergirl for nothing."
"Don't I know it..." Lena husked.
"Hmmm." Kara grinned against Lena's hair. "Maybe we can have a little time together before everyone arrives...That might help you relax."
"I'd like that." Lena sighed. "But we have a lot to do first."
"Why don't you go sit down for a bit? I'll have these onions done it a flash. Then you can tell me what else we need to do."
Kara pressed a light kiss to Lena's neck as her hands ran down Lena's sides. She was still getting used to the idea that Lena was pregnant, and the feeling of her abdomen swelling made her own heart swell and feel like it might burst with happiness. It was her second trimester and she wasn't really showing much. But Kara could feel the difference and she loved to sneak opportunities to reassure herself that it was real. Lena seemed to understand and would just smile knowingly.
"With Supergirl as my sous chef, what could go wrong?" She leaned away so she could look Kara in the eye.
Just as the words were out of Lena's mouth, Kara heard a dispatch over her coms.
"Supergirl. There is a warehouse fire down near the docks..."
"What? What is it?" Lena said, pushing Kara away gently. "I know that look. You're listening. But not to me."
"Sounds like it's nothing they can't handle. Pretty routine. I'll just call in..."
"No. No, just go. I don't need the worry that someone might burn alive because of me on my conscious. Besides, if you go the fire fighters will be out of harm's way sooner. And think of all those families whose loved ones are on call today. Who am I to ask Supergirl to chop onions instead of putting out a fire?"
"I can do both. I'll be back before you know it. And afterwards I'll call Director J'onnz and ask him to be on call for the rest of the day. He offered yesterday but, I didn't want to ask for a vacation from being Supergirl so soon after becoming Supergirl. I'm sorry, I should have..."
"Just go, baby. We'll figure it out once you're back."
Kara kissed her quickly, then turned to go. "I'll be back be back so fast, you won't even miss me." She turned and became a blur of motion and color. She was through the terrace door and gone in a blink of an eye.
"I always miss you." Lena sighed as she looked out at the empty terrace. She went back to work on the meal, but as time ticked on she couldn't help the worry niggling at the back of her mind. Clearly it wasn't a simple fire.
After two hours she broke down and called Alex. She hadn't been called in but was able to connect to one of her agent friends who was on duty that day. She called Lena back as soon as she had an update. The fire had started in a warehouse full of flammables which caused an explosion before Kara and the fire fighters could get it under control. Destruction from the fire caused a spill of a large oil reservoir, into the bay. Even after the fire was under control there was a massive clean up underway to try to limit damage to the water and wildlife.
"She's fine, Lena, I promise!" Alex said. "Nothing she can't handle, it's just taking time. Agent Cruz thinks she'll be back soon."
"Ugh, this is awful! I'm sorry for bothering you about it, it's just that...well, it was much easier when she was off saving the world in Kasnia. The not knowing details was a blessing, even though I didn't realize it at the time."
"Don't apologize, Lena. You have a right to be worried. And she's only been superheroing for a few weeks. She still has a lot to learn. It will get easier. For both of you."
"You really think so?"
"I do. Now why don't you take a break. Maybe get in that lovely jacuzzi you have. I'm sure she'll be back soon."
"Thanks, Alex."
"You can call me anytime. I know better than anyone how scary it can be to know she's in harm's way. I'm here for you, Lena."
"I can't tell you how much that means. Thank you."
"You're welcome. Now, how about that break? I'll call you if anything changes."
Lena hung up, but instead of relaxing she turned on the tv and began flipping through the many news channels until she found a local station that was covering the story. There she saw Kara in all her glory, rescuing people, putting out fires and generally saving the day.
Lena flopped down on a couch to continue watching. So many emotions were roaring through her - fear of Kara getting hurt, anger that she was there and Lena was alone preparing dinner, but underneath it all there was also a fierce pride at seeing Kara in action. On top of that she knew her hormones were raging and making everything she felt more extreme. And then came the flashes of doubt.
How can we bring a baby into our lives? She thought. Kara has only just started training to become Supergirl, they'd really only been together for a few months, not to mention they were suddenly living together. The pregnancy had caused them to skip many of the usual steps in a new relationship. Lena didn't doubt her feelings or love for Kara. But in the moment she was doubting almost everything else.
Lost in her thoughts she didn't hear the quiet thud of Kara's landing on the terrace. She jerked in surprise at the sound of sliding glass, then turned to see Kara walk in with a very sheepish expression. She looked quite singed around the edges and Lena leapt to her feet and ran to wrap her arms tight around her.
"Hey!" Kara held her. "Hey, I'm here. I'm fine."
"I'm sorry, I just. Got scared when you were gone so long. I'm not used to...well. I guess I better get used to it."
"No, I'm the one that's sorry. I've been so excited about my new job...I didn't think...This is a big day and I shouldn't have been on call."
"Damnit, Kara! Don't apologize for saving lives. Doing your job."
She shoved back against Kara and pounded her fists in frustration against the El symbol on her chest. Kara let her go so that Lena could move freely in her rage.
"Harder, Lena. You can hit me harder." Kara said gently she put her arms to her sides to give Lena a better access.
"Arrgh!" Lena screamed and pounded one more time before resting her fists against Kara's chest. A few moments after Lena stilled, Kara gripped one of her hands and pulled it to her lips to kiss her fingers.
"You can't hurt me, Lena. At least not physically."
Lena leaned her head against Kara's chest and sobbed quietly. Kara wrapped her arms around her again.
"I'm strong, Lena. Stronger than you can imagine. Nearly invincible. I know this is still new for you. But I can do this. I can be Supergirl." Kara kissed the side of her face. "I need to be Supergirl.
"I know. I know it! It's just, my hormones are making me so emotional. And I started to think about what it will be like...what it will be like to have a baby with a superhero. To have you flying all over they place, putting yourself in danger. And there's not a damn thing I can do to help."
"You can do everything to help me. You're everything I need, Lena. Being with you these last few months - I can't tell you what it means to me. You're support makes me strong. Please... I know we can make this work."
"Of course we can, Kara. I didn't mean... Baby, I'm sorry. Please don't think I have a problem with you being Supergirl. I know this is what you were meant to do. And I want to be with you and support you every step of the way. In anyway I can. I just need to...Listen, maybe I should rest. I was excited last night and I didn't sleep and then..."
"You've been slaving away in the kitchen all morning. But now you have a super-helper to speed things up. So you have time for a little nap."
Lena smiled her relief at the idea.
"Allow me, my lady." In a moment Kara had Lena in her arms and began carrying her gently to the bed room. She laid her on the bed with care and kissed her forehead.
"I'll go see about the status of the dinner and the kitchen. You get some rest."
Lena gripped Kara's hand to keep her from standing. "Stay, please."
"As you wish." Kara grinned and laid down on the bed next to her. Lena rolled over to lay her head on Kara's chest.
"I can do this, Kara. I can be Supergirl's girlfriend. I can support your dream, and be here for you. You don't have to worry about me..."
"I do worry about you, Lena. But I also know you can do it. You're the strongest person I know. No matter what your family, or the city, or the world hands you, you've dealt with it like the hero you are. With grace and brilliance." Kara leaned down to kiss the top of her head. "I'm so lucky to have you on my side."
"I'll always be on your side, Kara. Whatever it takes."
"I know. Now try to rest. You're heart is beating a mile a minute."
Lena ran her fingers across Kara's suit, sending chills down Kara's spine.
"This high tensile zirconium material is great for resisting fire and freezing temperatures. But it does create quite a barrier to your skin when I want to get to it." Lena complained.
"It's a good thing I designed this thing." She added with a smirk. "That means I can get into it quicker than anyone."
Lena reached behind her to release Kara's suit and then began to strip her of the taught fabric. "I want to feel you."
Kara slowly began to assist Lena in her efforts, first to remove the suit and then to undress Lena until the were nearly naked in each other's arms.
"I've thought of something that will distract me from my nerves of hosting Thanksgiving for your family." Lena said as she caressed Kara's breasts and smiled up at her.
"Oh really, Ms. Luthor?"
"Indeed." Lena continued to remove and slide Kara's suit until she was completely naked. "I need to take my mind off of things. Especially after that footage of you at the dock. You were so strong. So...beautiful. You were absolutely fantastic, Kara."
"Thank you, Lena. Just remember I'm here for you. Whatever you need. Whatever I can give you..."
"Is that true?" Lena asked as she continued to tease Kara's breasts.
Kara nodded frantically.
"I'm glad to hear it. Because I have something I need from you. Desperately."
"Anything, Lena." Now Kara's breath was coming erratically. "Name it."
"Are you sure? Even with your family coming in a couple of hours?"
"Of course. Anything."
"Well, what I need won't take that long. Especially not considering this..." Lena reached between Kara's legs to feel the tight bulge between her legs .
"Ahh!" Kara gasped in surprise at the feeling. "Are you sure, Lena?"
"One-hundred percent." Lena said clearly. "I want you to fuck me. Supergirl."
