Chapter 1: The Morning Shift

Summary:

A look into a typical opening shift at Moonbills' Café and an unpleasant encounter with an unpleasant customer

Chapter Text

Saturday mornings should have been peaceful for most. That is, for those who decided to stay at home, having no job to get to and no places to be. That wasn't the case at Moonbills' Café. Although the shop was small, it was bustling with customers, trying to get their morning coffee for the day.

One customer would practically push her way to the front, glaring around at the others. The barista she was met with leaned on the counter as he slowly looked up at her. He pushed himself back up, his name, Yakko, gleaming on his name tag.

"Y'ello! What can I get for you?"

The customer scoffed, shaking her head. "You all should know my usual by now!" She huffed crossing her arms.

Yakko blinked a few times, resting his elbows on the table. "Could you just...give a little refresher on what it is?"

That only seemed to set the customer off even more. "Well, Tommy knows my order by heart! Can't you just get him instead?"

Yakko would drum his fingers on the counter, thinking. "Uuuuuhhh...Tommy...Tommy...?" He leaned, forward, calling out to his shift mate. "Hey, Lena! D'you know of a Tommy who works here?!"

The other barista, Lena, would lean back, shaking her head. Once Yakko got the message he'd turn back to the woman he was helping with a shrug.

"Sorry. Can't help you there."

"Unbelievable!" The customer shook her head, glancing away from the toon. "Can't you just tell him to come here! I see him all the time when I go."

Wheel's turned in the Warner's head as he opened his mouth to respond. "Does he happen to work at a different location?"

"And why does that matter?!"

"Because wherever he works sure as heck isn't this one." Yakko leaned out to see a line of impatient customers practically crammed through the doorway. "Now can you spare the whole 'getting the manager' spiel? You're not the only one in here."

While the customer was thrown off guard, she was able to let out another utterance. "I already said I wanted my usual!"

"Right, right. Your usual.' He muttered the words, pressing his palms to his forehead. "Would you settle for a latte by any chance?"

"Fine. Just make it without the milk!"

Yakko was so close to letting his head hit the counter.

"Coming right up!"

"WHAT IS THIS?!"

Not even ten minutes later, the customer would once again approach Yakko's space at the counter, quite literally sending another customer flying out of the way.

"Oh. It's you." The toon regarded the woman with a frown. "I was kinda in the middle of something."

"NO! YOU SCAMMED ME! SO YOU'RE GONNA REMAKE MY DRINK NOW!" The woman held up her cup, all that was in it was a single shot of espresso.

"Look, I only gave you what you wanted." Yakko shrugged, regarding the drink. "Frankly, arguing about it wasn't worth my time."

"AND ANOTHER THING!"

"Oh, whoop-dee-doo..."

"Why did you write Karen on my cup?! My name is not Karen!"

The toon just gave the woman a tired stare.

"This is outrageous! I DEMAND TO-"

"-speak with a manager?" Yakko tilted his head as he inquired. "I knew that was coming!"

The customer just let out a small shriek, mouth agape. "Just forget it! I would've never gotten this service of Tommy was getting my drink!"

"Uh huh, that's great."

"Until he gets back, you can kiss my service, AND MY TIP goodbye!" The customer would reach into a tip jar, pulling out the only 20 that had made its way in, much to Yakko's dismay.

"Hey! You didn't-!"

The woman was already walking out the door, cup still in hand.

"I guess she wanted that drink after all," the toon muttered to himself, before turning back to the newer customer who'd been shoved to the side. "So sorry about that. What did you say you wanted?"

The customer went through their order again, definitely seeming more understanding than the previous customer had been. Yakko quickly went to prepare the drink, passing Lena along the way.

"That was rough."

"Yeah, you're telling me." He looked at his co-worker as he grabbed a cup and started to fill it. "But at least it let that Tommy guy off the hook."

"But you still had to put up with her. Which means one more point for you." The duck smirked as she finished prepping the drink for her customer, sliding it onto the pick-up table.

"Who knows?" You may have to deal with someone else like her next." The toon mimicked his friend's smirk, grabbing out a pastry to go with the coffee drink and setting them both down. The customer thanked him, and dropped a big tip into the jar. "Hey, at least they were nicer."

"Maybe the rest of today's customers will be better than her too?" Lena went back to her station, still looking back. Seeing that no newcomers had entered the building, Yakko let out a long sigh, leaning against the counter.

"Yeah..." He may not have entirely believed it at the moment, but it was a nice thought nonetheless. "I hope so."
