Work Text:

Reds of all shades streaked across the sky. A bloody haze blanketed the streets. The disappearance of the sun signaled a start to their night. It was finally time to feed. As they stepped off the porch of his home, he intertwined his hand with the man next to him. Hajime used his other hand to adjust his sunglasses to keep the last of the light from irritating his eyes. While his lover enjoyed basking in the colors of the sky at twilight, Hajime preferred the pitch black of the dead of night.

“Do you think we’ll get lucky tonight?” Yamaguchi questioned. His grip tightened as he gazed around the streets, an eager gleam in his eyes. Sometimes Hajime wondered how much Yamaguchi enjoyed the thrill of the chase. The pride that lit up those deep green eyes after a particularly hard catch, the satisfaction. It was one of the things that piqued his interest when they’d first met. The hunger to win more than the hunger to survive that he’d seen in other vampires he’d come across.

At this time of night, there were still many humans out. Bodies filtered in and out of buildings. Rambunctious laughter and excited voices. A greedy euphoria filled the air, one that the two vampires hoped to mirror by the end of the night.

“I don’t think we’ll have any issues,” Hajime grinned. He leaned over, licking along Yamaguchi’s bottom lip. He couldn’t wait until it tasted of blood. Yamaguchi’s lips parted on a gasp. He leaned in farther, only for Hajime to turn his head straight and continue to walk. Their interlocked fingers forced Yamaguchi forward. He squeezed them in retaliation.

“You’re such a tease,” he could feel Yamaguchi’s pout through his words.

“I seem to recall you just yesterday saying how much you enjoyed it.” Yamaguchi sputtered and Hajime would wager that his cheeks were bright pink, but he didn’t deny it.

They continued their walk through downtown. Sidestepping drunks and sticking to the shadows. Yamaguchi was leading them to the old park in the rundown area of the city. It was usually empty. Their favorite place to wait out their prey. His lover enjoyed swinging, reminiscent of a childhood he could barely remember. And Hajime enjoyed his company, content to just be by his side. He’d spent decades alone and never wanted to experience it again.

When he first turned, loneliness was nothing but a small speck in a sea of passion, revelry, and bloodlust. As the years passed on, it grew. It gnawed on every part of his being until he thought it would eat him alive. When he first met Yamaguchi he figured, much like his previous companions, he would just be a bandaid for his wound. Someone to stave off the worst of it for a period of time. Except the loneliness seemed to have all but disappeared. It was more than just the idea of having someone around. It was Yamaguchi himself. It was his endearing shyness and his stubborn determination. His undying loyalty. The unwavering confidence he had in Hajime. And the alluring green eyes helped. After all, green was his favorite color.

“What are you thinking about?”

“You.” Yamaguchi looked startled at the direct response. He really did enjoy teasing him. His expressions made every remark worth it. Hajime moved from his spot atop the picnic table and started towards the swings.

“Iwaizumi-” His palm cradled Yamaguchi’s cheek and made him pause. Pink dotted Hajime’s cheeks, drawing Yamaguchi’s attention. It wasn’t often that he’d seen his lover this nervous. The corners of Yamaguchi’s mouth turned up in delight. A peek of fang revealed from between parted lips. Hajime could feel his breath along his hand. The warmth contrasting with the chill of his lover’s cheek. Yamaguchi was a study in contrasts. A study that Hajime wanted to dedicate his immortal life to.

“I think we know each other well enough by now, wouldn’t you agree?” Yamaguchi nodded his head. He nuzzled deeper into the palm, turning his head to brush a kiss along it followed by the sharp prodding of a fang. Blood bloomed and a swipe of tongue chased it away.

“Why don’t you call me Hajime?”

“Hajime,” the breathless whisper left no room for a mistaken meaning.

“Tadashi,” it was so much more than just an exchange of names. It was a declaration. The step off of the edge of a cliff. The exhilaration of the free fall. And the trust that they’ll be there to catch the other at the bottom.

The faint sound of steps and laughter pierced through the otherwise quiet night. Tadashi broke his gaze and stood up from the swing.

“Forever,” Tadashi promised. His body pressed into Hajime’s for a moment and then, with a pure smile unmarred by their lifestyle, Tadashi was gone. Chasing after those unfortunate enough to catch their attention; greedy for the hunt. The moon was the only witness to Hajime’s dark grin in response before he took off after him. Forever.
