Work Text:
Anne noticed something was off with her friend Marcy. She kept zoning off in class, and when she hung out with her and Sasha.
It wasn’t her usual zone out. No, she’d stare at her feet as she walked, hands tucked in her hoodie pocket, frowning and brooding or whatever.
Anne didn’t like it when her friends were upset about something.
So, she was going to ask Marcy what was wrong, and then she’d fix it, and Marcy could go back to being very chatty and (sometimes, occasionally, well, more so to Sasha than Ann) annoying as usual.
“So what’s going on, Marbles?” Anne asked.
“What are you talking about?”
“Well, you’ve been studying for thirty minutes, and haven’t once made a single observation on it.” Anne pointed out.
In fact, Marcy was more curious about the movie playing on Anne’s TV. Some sort of cheesy rom-com was playing.
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Marcy said, not taking her eyes off the TV.
“Okay.” Anne grabbed her notebook and plopped down on her bed, right beside Marcy. “Yeah, I’m not buying it.”
Marcy was ignoring her, though. She continued to stare at the couple who were now making out on the screen.
“Ugh,” Anne groaned. “I’ve seen this. She totally kissed the wrong guy. I mean, Dustin? He’s such a jerk! And Will was always so nice to her. I swear these movie makers are way too fed up with the bad boy and nice girl trope-”
“What’s kissing like?” Marcy blurted.
That shut Anne right up.
For about one minute. Then she had everything totally processed.
“Uh. What?” she asked, dumbly.
“Kissing,” Marcy said. She was fiddling with the drawstrings on her hoodie now. “I never kissed anyone.”
Anne bit back a sarcastic remark, and instead settled with, “oh uh. That’s what got you all weird lately?”
Marcy shrugged. “I’ve just been thinking about it.”
Anne smirked and leaned closer. “Oooh, why? Got a secret crush or something?” she said in a teasing tone.
Marcy flushed and looked away from Anne. “Uh, maybe?”
Anne squealed, “ooh, girl! You got to give me all the details-”
“Have you ever kissed anyone?” Marcy asked, cutting Anne off.
“Uh,” Anne’s stomach flipped. “Huh? Oh! Yeah totally, pfsh, I’ve kissed a ton of people. I’m a total expert.”
That made Marcy’s eyes light up, and she turned back to Anne, her hands clenched together. “Really?”
Anne knew where this was going, and it was making her feel all fuzzy and nervous. “Er, yeah, totally.”
“Okay, do you think you could, uh,” Marcy was back to looking shy, her face turning red. “Er.”
“I mean I could show you-” Anne began.
“Doyouthinkyoucouldshowme?” Marcy blurted out, her words all jumbled up together.
Anne felt the tip of her ears heat up. “Uhh,” she said intelligently, before her brain finally caught up. “Oh! I mean, ha, yeah. I can do that.”
“Really?” Marcy asked.
“Mhm,” Anne nodded. And then she kept nodding, awkwardly, for a long time.
Way to go, Anne, she thought bitterly.
“So uh, if you’re an expert, what do we do first?” Marcy asked. Then, she rambled on nervously, “I’ve seen lots of movies, and there’s so many settings or emotions with kissing, some of them are rather-”
Not sure what else to do, and not thinking about it either, Anne grabbed Marcy’s hoodie and tugged her close, kissing Marcy on the mouth.
Marcy squeaked.
Anne panicked.
She almost pulled away, but Marcy grabbed her face and kissed back. That was definitely the last thing Anne was expecting (even though Marcy wanted Anne to kiss her).
Anne had about a few seconds to relish how good it felt kissing Marcy when her friend pulled back. A flustered mess.
“Uh, so that was- I mean, by the expert’s standards, a good- kiss? First kiss? I,” Marcy was twiddling her thumbs, looking anywhere but at Anne.
Anne quickly caught her breath and tried to calm the butterflies that erupted in her stomach. “Uh, yeah, I’d say that was okay. Acceptable, you know. Good.”
“Oh, okay,” Marcy seemed to relax. “So uh,” she cleared her throat. “Do you think that um-”
“I definitely think we should test it again,” Anne said quickly. “You know, to make sure you got it right.”
“Oh,” Marcy breathed. “I mean, yeah! You’re definitely right, ha!”
Anne said, “then you can kiss your crush.”
Until she said it, Anne didn’t realize how much she didn’t want that to happen. She wanted her shy, nerdy, weird friend all to herself. Especially now that she knew what kissing her was like.
But Marcy leaned closer, her eyes bright and practically shining, and she whispered, “I just did,” before closing the space between them, successfully ending Anne’s thought process.
