Promise Me

Summary:

Katsuki breaks the only promise he made to Izuku since they were kids. Izuku has to deal with the after math

Work Text:

“Promise me, Kacchan. Promise that we’ll grow old together.”

I promise, Deku.

Izuku packs away the last of the dishes and tapes the box shut. Most of it fit into two boxes, anything glass had been shattered the week before and all that remained were well used pots and pans and novelty plastic cups from cons. The bedroom had been stripped of posters and merch from childhood already, the things that survived carefully wrapped up and sent to Inko for safe keeping in the meantime. All that was left to do was finish packing anything that couldn’t be replaced and grabbing his duffle bag of clothes for the week. The movers would be at the apartment by morning to grab everything and take it to the storage unit.

He takes one last look around the apartment he lived in for the last six years. Izuku sees all the memories that they’ve made together and his vision blurs. He leaves and heads to his car.

Deku couldn’t find him. He couldn’t find his partner or his sidekicks.

“KACCHAN! KACCHAN PLEASE, WHERE ARE YOU?”

The villains that had blown a skyscraper had been apprehended earlier that day and proheroes Deku and DynaMight had been called in for a rescue. They’d gotten separated after an hour and that’s when another villain had shown up.

His new apartment was small. An open room with a bar to separate the kitchen and a door for the bathroom and that was it. Nothing special and nothing roomy. It was cheap, by the agency, and with in walking distance of the cemetery. Izuku had been in the new apartment a month and all that was set up was his kitchen and his bed. No couch, no extra chairs for guests, and most of his clothes fit inside a laundry basket that he just dumped out onto his bed after washing. No posters on the walls, no shelves and empty spaces filled with figurines and merch, no hero attire minus his own hero costume and a single black, orange, and green hoodie hung on the back of the door.

The villain had come running from where Katsuki had been the last time Izuku saw him. It didn’t take long for him to subdue the weakened villain and hand him off to someone else and take off running. All thoughts of an injured Kacchan or worse flooded his mind. He sees the two sidekicks that his husband had taken on digging in the rubble frantically.

“DEKU!”

“Deku, hey man, snap out of it.” Kirishima was standing next to him. Izuku didn’t know when he had shown up at the cemetery, but it was nice to see someone who knew what he was going through. He squats down next to Izuku before sighing, “How long have you been out here?”

He shrugs his shoulders.

Kirishima fully sits down now, “Alright. Well, I’m assuming that you came out here right after leaving the building and its been four hours, meaning you haven’t eaten anything. And since you probably haven’t eaten anything, you probably haven’t gone home to shower either. Am I right?”

Izuku just turns his attention back to the grave and stares, not speaking.

Kirishima groans, “Don’t make me do this. Ku, please, get up or I’m dragging you back to my place.”

He shot a glare at the red head, silently daring him to try.

“Alright, you’ve only brought this on yourself, lets go.” He grabs Izuku’s wrist and twist so that the man is draped across his shoulders.

He doesn’t struggle. He’s tired. He’s so, so tired.

Kacchan, please. Please no.” Deku had finally reached where DynaMight had been buried under the rubble. He was barely conscience and covered in blood. “No, you promised me.”

“…ku? I’m sorry. I wanna grow old with you.” His voice is raspy and so, so quiet.

Deku holds his body up and presses his forehead to his husband’s, “I don’t wanna go alone, Kacchan, I want us to get wrinkles together,” a sob rips from Deku’s throat, “make fun of who has more.”

A bloodied hand rests on his cheek, “We’ll stay happy, always, Deku.”

It falls away.

Deku retires from hero work at the age of 30. Only a year after number one hero DynaMight dies in the line of action protecting civilians. Multiple people claim that Deku moved away from the city life and has been living alone since the tragedy. No one heard from the former hero in three months.

I won’t say goodbye, Kacchan. A part of me died with you that day and I miss you so much.”
