“You’ll find, Inspector Katou, that we don’t have to force you. After all, this is for a case, isn’t it?

-----

Haru finds himself dressing as a woman to help catch a notorious drug-smuggling leader. His night gets a little more interesting as the Kambe siblings struggle with both their feelings for him and his obliviousness to said feelings.

Notes:

I’m not sure how alike my work is to strawberrycitrus’s but I did read their fic to get characterizations for mine so u might see influences whoops

I write Kanbe as Kambe, because Server Mother said that it's pronounced that way (I'm inclined to trust her, as she wrote a thesis on about it!). This mess all came from the Daiharu Simp Server when a bunch of people all came up with the prompt and apparently I was crazy enough to write it out.

Huge shoutouts to tamagotchi mom and the #fic-disscussion channel, because y'all saved my ass when I was struggling. Honorable mention to the people who read my small WIP and liked it! I would die for all of you.

Finally, the biggest and loudest shoutout to my beta, meemee. This fic would literally be incomprehensible and all in present tense if not for her. You can find her at keyoftheheart here on ao3!! Check out her works.

Work Text:

“I can’t do this,” Haru replied, horrified, as he looked at the outfit. “I can’t, and you can’t force me to.” The outfit in question was held up by Suzue, who smirked over the hanger containing a shirt, shorts, and coat.

“You’ll find, Inspector Katou, that we don’t have to force you. After all, this is for a case, isn’t it? From what I’ve heard from my brother, your best trait is that you are relentless in the pursuit of justice.” She pushed the hanger into Haru’s chest, gently guiding him to the changing rooms of the Kambe manor. “You’ll find all the accessories on the lounge chair in the room.”

“But- I- I don’t think-,” Haru stuttered as the door slowly closes, courtesy of Suzue.

Change , Inspector Katou.”

Shuffling was heard behind the door, and both Suzue and Daisuke looked up, the latter having arrived shortly after Haru was uneventfully forced into the changing rooms. The door handle clicked and Haru poked his head out, surveying the land like a rabbit would, searching for predators. Or in Haru’s case, Kambes.

When Haru locked eyes with Daisuke, Haru’s shoulders visibly stiffen and hike up around his ears. “Kambe, I refuse to walk out of this room with your brother here.”

Daisuke looked back placidly. “You do have to come out in time for the party. If you’re this sensitive about me seeing you like this, I worry about your performance at the party.”

Haru flushed pink, face warm from the insult to his pride. He shoves open the door, ready to give his partner a piece of his mind because he can’t take that lying down‐

Suzue clapped in delight as Haru’s coat flapped from the force of the door. “You look great in that, Inspector Katou! I’m glad I had your measurements correct.” She dragged her eyes up and down the detective’s form, taking in the outfit she meticulously picked out and planned.

Haru wore a white crop top button-up, cut at the bottom like the end of a ribbon, with the middle higher up and the sides flaring out into points. The top had ruffles along with the buttons, tastefully obscuring them from view. Resting on Haru’s hips were black shorts, equipped with pockets, and a fancy belt (which probably cost more than Haru’s rent for an entire year). The fabric reaches to the tops of his thighs- of which were encased with black sheer tights, giving Haru’s legs a sinfully slim look. To top off the look, Haru’s shoulders were graced with an ungodly soft coat, with the lapels peaked and collar popped. All together, Haru looked like something out of a wet dream.

Daisuke’s eyes widened as his eyes roamed his work partner’s body. He felt stunned like someone hit him with a right hook and his ears were ringing. Daisuke prided himself on being unflappable, calm in the face of pressure, but he’d managed to find the one thing able to unmoor him; it’s standing in front of him, breathing fast from embarrassment, and looking delectable with the knee-high boots that hug Haru’s thighs just right -

Daisuke looked away.

Suzue, on the other hand, took another look. She noticed her brother’s distraction, but it hadn’t been a surprise for her. As soon as her older brother came home, talking frustratedly about some detective that refuses to be bought for some reason, he’s a police officer he can’t make a comfortable living wage- , Suzue knew her brother had stumbled his way into his first crush. She couldn’t help but root for him. However, letting your paramour-to-be fall off a bridge as a first impression was not exactly the best way to start a relationship.

While her brother struggled to reign in his libido, she admired the soft skin of Haru’s thighs and stomach, like an appetizer to a bigger meal up ahead. Not to say Haru’s without strength; due to the detective’s religious judo workouts, his stomach and legs were rippling with power, coiling and uncoiling with barely a thought. Suzue had always been a sucker for strong people, ones that could restrain and wrestle a person down with little effort, regardless of their body type. But she was an even bigger fan of strength hidden behind a veneer of frailness. She loved the feeling of betting for the underdog, only for the incredulous gasps of others to rush into her ears as the underdog raized the competition, proving that first impressions aren’t everything -

-but no matter.

Daisuke swallowed and gathered himself together, and briskly commanded Haru to follow him to the car waiting outside. Predictably, Haru bristled like a cat on a leash and refused to move.

Suzue sighed. “Come on, Haru , we have a party to attend.” She watched as Haru froze with the usage of his given name, but quickly righted himself, acting like the seasoned detective she never forgot he was. She hooked her arm through his and walked them both to the driveway, her crimson mermaid over-the-shoulder dress contrasting nicely with Haru’s monochromatic outfit. As the duo walked out the manor doors, the only sounds echoed in the night were the thrum of the car and two sets of clicking heels.

“This is humiliating, Kambe.”

“No, it’s far from that, Haru . Please remember we’re on a mission here, and no couple would ever use each other’s last names.”

The hotel they parked at was luxurious, almost to an unbearable degree. Speckled marble and dark lacquered wood ( probably designer wood, Haru thought a little hysterically. If it exists, this hotel definitely bought it ) surround a brightly lit entrance. There were bushes and shrubbery lining the walk to the door- because what’s richer than a long walk to a hotel door-  and a small smattering of stairs right before a person can enter the building proper.

The trio walked to the door, where they then showed their invitations to the doorman- Daisuke with one and Suzue with another, featuring Haru as Suzue’s plus 1. And girlfriend. Which was one wild discussion when Haru and Daisuke had received the case file. They were after Suda Tatsuo, a known leader of a drug-smuggling ring. The only way to catch him was to attend one of his parties; the man had tight security all other times of the year. The Kambes, probably through HEUSC, obtained two invites and decided that having Haru and Suzue pretend to be a lesbian couple increased their chances of getting Suda alone. The man had a certain, uh, preference in bed, and the MCPTF had collectively decided that they would throw Haru to the hell that is women’s clothing in order to get the man’s attention.

Which led to Haru, in heels (albeit tiny), arm-in-arm with Suzue in her sunset glory, all blazing reds and oranges when the chandelier lights hit her dress. Suzue had decided on heels that would put her even with Haru, refusing to be shorter. Daisuke was on Haru’s left, opposite of his sister, dressed to the nines in a suit that somehow managed to match his sister while maintaining his own individuality. Haru felt hopelessly outclassed, stuck between two gorgeous people. But Haru was a detective. He had a job to do, and damn him all to hell if he wouldn’t complete it.

The next few hours were spent mostly socializing, sipping dry champagne, and giggling at the right moments.

Suzue excused herself to the bathroom later that night, and Haru faced his first major hurdle of the night. Can I even go into the girls’ bathroom? Haru was tasked with watching over Suzue because Suda was famous for having bodyguards mingle with the guests, and if they felt Suzue was in any way a threat, she would be in deep trouble. So, they had to remain together to minimize the danger. The detective, in a truly brilliant act of indecisiveness, just hovered awkwardly near the entrance.

After a minute or so, the tap of men’s dress shoes echoed in the hallway and Haru automatically spun to meet the unknown person. They smelt like a bar after a big sports game; alcohol and cigarette smoke. Haru stepped back as the man stepped forward, like a bastardized version of a waltz. The man leant forward and rumbled, clearly in a voice meant to be seductive, but missing the mark by a mile, “Hey, baby. Anyone makin’ sure you’re not lonely tonight?” The man drawled.

Haru wasn’t sure if the man’s confidence was impressive or deeply misplaced.

Still, Haru faltered. He didn’t think he would get hit up so enthusiastically by another dude at a party like this.

Haru grimaced as he remembered his outfit. He wasn’t a dude. He was a girl, or at the very least, pretending to be one. Haru cleared his throat, nervous to continue a conversation where he was put so quickly on the back foot. “You do realize that that was an awful pickup line, right? If you’re trying to flirt, you’re doing an awful job. Show some originality at the very least.” Being rude was more comfortable than being nervous for Haru, and it showed.

While word vomiting, Haru did a visual sweep to determine if the man is dangerous. Finding little threat, he took another look over and mentally noted that his suit was rumpled- Daisuke wouldn’t be caught dead looking like that.

Haru blinked, startled that he was comparing the man in front of him- who still hasn’t introduced himself- to his partner. The detective squinted, upset that Daisuke was not only invading his work and friend group, but also his thoughts.

“-should’ve introduced myself sooner, haha. My name is Sugawara Toru, it’s nice to meet you. But do you know what would be nicer?” The man revealed to be Sugawara, leers.

Having someone throw themselves at Haru was new. Was it the outfit? Was it because he was all alone and he was the first girl Sugawara had seen? Either way, Haru wanted out of the conversation. He nervously glanced towards the bathroom and back to the man, mentally begging for Suzue to come back to save him.

Drying her hands, Suzue caught the last couple of seconds of dialogue between Haru and the auburn-haired man. Something flared deep in her gut, and Suzue strode out of the bathroom and possessively wrapped her arm around Haru’s waist, cupping her mission partner’s hip. She kissed him on the cheek and apologized for taking forever.

Haru flushed a little bit, but he knew his role so he playfully responded, “It’s alright. This man was just… keeping me company.” He winced at his awkward delivery, but managed to hide it by facing Suzue, who still hasn’t looked over at the man.

“I’m glad you found a friend while I was gone, sweetie,” when the youngest Kambe says sibling, her eyes sharply flicked over to Sugawara’s, “After all, we both you’re too pretty to be left alone without a guard to bat away suitors.”

Suzue finally turned to face the stocky man as she scrunched up her face and gave him a pitying look. “You arrived a little too late. Sorry, this babe’s mine .” The self-satisfying smirk that adorned her face was as terrifying as it was attractive, as she tugged her arm around his waist to make sure Sugawara knew he had no chance.

Haru burned a brilliant red, his brain rapidly losing all function. He couldn’t understand why she said that ( that he was hers . That he was hers ) but after a couple of seconds, his brain rebooted, and he shook himself mentally.  Suzue just said it to get the dude off their backs; that was that and nothing more. If in the future, Haru thought about the tight arm around his waist and the possessive tone and shivered in want, he dismissed it as being lonely and nothing more.

They left the man behind, but the one thing that stayed was Suzue’s arm around Haru’s waist- heavy and warm, her hand splayed on the open skin of his stomach, scoring hot against the air-cooled skin.

“Finally, Suda’s approaching us. I want to be done,” Haru commiserated. “Not that I don’t want to be in your company Suzue- I mean I do- but you, uh, yeah I’m tired, y’know-” He blustered, fumbling over his words.

Suzue gently shushed him, straightening in order to face Suda Tatsuo. She pulled a smile across her face and steadied herself as the drug ring leader finally arrived.

What followed was the most awkward conversation Haru has ever had the pleasure of being included in. Suda was clearly propositioning the duo, attempting to be sly and suave, but Haru hadn’t spent that many years on the force to be fooled by pretty words. And so with little effort, he saw straight through to Suda’s true intentions. Haru was once a member of the First Division for a reason, after all, and it wasn’t just because he had an unrelenting sense of justice.

Suzue talked the man into letting them discuss the possible threesome in a private room, pretending to be demure and submissive, acting nothing like the strong capable woman Haru knew she was. The Suzue that Haru knew was whip-smart and could thrash Suda in a debate in seconds. The Suzue he knew was like the sea- peaceful, but unstoppable and all-powerful; gorgeous in her power and heavenly in her calm. It was a little unnerving to see her like this, but Haru played his part and followed dutifully behind his fake-girlfriend.

They entered a dimly lit room, and the door clicked ominously in the silence, with only the muted sound of music coming from the ballroom a couple of doors down to accompany it. As soon as the door shut, the man walked forward and began to feel up Haru, hands roaming up and down his sides.

They’re cold, unlike Suzue’s , was Haru’s first thought, which was quickly followed by, I’d much rather have her touch me than him . He wondered how Daisuke’s touch would compare to his sister’s. I’d think they’d be a little chilly, like the taste of ice water after a run. Maybe like jumping in a pool on a hot day-

-maybe Daisuke was the moon to Suzue’s sea. Cold and distant, but still lighting the way for billions of people at night, to keep them safe. Haru snorted a little bit. He was clearly exhausted if he was spewing poetry about the Kambe siblings.

He quickly tuned back in when he felt the top button of his shirt pop up and a wet mouth attached to his clavicle, wet and sucking. He jerked his hands up to Suda’s shoulders instinctively, but quickly settled when he saw Suzue in front of them, watching them with… anger?  Haru didn’t know when or why (excluding the drug-smuggling ) Suzue’s opinion of the man dropped so dramatically to warrant a glare of that magnitude, but Haru was glad nonetheless to have the youngest Kambe on his side.

With a head nod from Haru and a brilliant display of teamwork and dexterity, Haru swept Suda’s feet out from under him and knocked him to his knees while Suzue grabbed the man’s arms and handcuffed them behind his back, rendering him immobile in seconds.

“Suda Tatsuo, you are under arrest for illegal drug trafficking and distribution, evading arrest, and money laundering. You have the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney, but anything you say or do can and will be used against you in a court of law.” Haru dragged the man up and out the door, and down into the lobby, containing the criminal’s struggles with minimal effort, looking every bit the experienced cop he was.

They frog marched him out the hotel doors, where a police car was waiting for them. As Haru watched as the perp was shoved into the police car, he had a grin on his face that screamed his pleasure with a job well done. The glow from the hotel door backlit the detective, silhouetting him in white. Combining Haru’s grin and the light, he looked angelic. Suzue looked at her partner and was only able to muster up one sentence: I want to keep him this happy forever.

Daisuke walked out of the ballroom as soon as HEUSC had pinged him that Suda had been caught. He’d been watching Haru all night, cataloging the men and women that had simpered at his partner, hoping to draw his attention. There had been an inexcusable amount of lecherous glances, with party-goers ogling his partner’s thighs or stomach. Daisuke had a responsibility to protect Haru from the dangers he couldn’t detect himself, so he ordered HEUSC to dig up and spread life-ruining rumors about them. Petty, some might say. But for Daisuke, it was his own brand of justice. After all, Haru was Daisuke’s , and no one had the right to look at him like that when he was already taken.

The jealousy simmered in his stomach all night long, shortening his temper. The fire roared to a blaze when he saw his partner get hit on by Suda, because what gave that worm the idea that he had the right to-

He took a deep breath, and let it go. This was for a mission. Haru would come running back to Daisuke like he always did. After all, who else complemented the detective as much as the billionaire did? Who else clicked with Haru like a puzzle? The answer was no one, and Daisuke was determined to keep it that way.

He quickly spotted his sister and his partner standing at the curb, chatting calmly, although Daisuke noticed that Haru looked exhausted. He drew closer and noticed the popped button and the purpling bruise on the long expanse of exposed collarbone and he snapped.

“Haru!” Daisuke snarled. “Were you not competent enough to stop one criminal?”

Hary whipped around, his smile quickly transforming into a scowl. “What the hell, Kambe? Your sister and I did perfectly.  Are you too blind to see the perp in the car, or are you just jealous that you didn’t get any attention tonight?

Oh, Master Kambe ! I’m so sorry you didn’t get to throw your money around,” Haru faux-simpered. “Get your head out of your ass, bastard.”

Daisuke stalked forward and pushed roughly on the hickey, watching how Haru’s face screwed with discomfort. “I’m talking about the hickey, Inspector Katou. What, did you have to whore yourself out to get a chance to catch him?” Daisuke knew he was acting out of line. That demeaning Haru for a hickey he had received doing his job was juvenile and petty, but the jealousy crawling up his throat choked him and prevented rational thought.

“You absolute bastard -” Haru bellowed before he cut himself off in surprise as Suzue, looking furious in her cardinal red dress, shoved her brother off.

She looked down on him, assisted by her heels, and said, her voice quivering with fury, “You’re just jealous that Suda marked him up before you did, right? Get over yourself. Haru is a fucking grown man, he can do what he chooses with his body.

“If he chooses you? Great. If he doesn’t? Then you’ll respect it.”

Suzue blew past her brother and got into the car waiting at the curb for the Kambe family and Haru, ready to drive back to the mansion to let the trio rest and recharge before Daisuke and Haru had to report to work. Haru looked at his partner to see how Daisuke reacted to getting chewed out so viciously and publicly. Daisuke was clearly collecting himself, but every so often he stole furious glances at Haru and his collarbones.

Haru wanted to feel bad for him, he really did, but the bastard had accused him of selling his body to catch a criminal, so Haru feels justified in reveling in Daisuke’s verbal smackdown. He did acknowledge that Daisuke somehow still looked impeccable after several hours of the party, whereas Haru was a bit rumpled. Well, Haru has time to feel bitter about that after he sleeps. He walked to the car but paused at the door and spoke, “I don’t know what crawled up your ass, but drop it. I would wait for your crisis to be over, but Suzue won’t leave without you and I really want to go to sleep. So buck up, you can deal with your little predicament later.”

Daisuke scoffed and followed, but only after waiting a minute and a half just to piss his partner off.  He wasn’t having a crisis. He was planning how to kill Suda for touching what’s his- and how to make it look like an accident.

“HEUSC,” Daisuke mutters, “What’s Japan’s jail time for murder?”

Hopefully it was to your liking! This was my first fan fiction, but I hope it was good at the very least hahaha
